Adam Page gives his tips for Melbourne Cup day including his Big 6 selections, be sure to add his tips to your mutliples.
Trainer Gillian Heinrich has had a big opinion of Military Grace for a while now. She declared
it a good thing to me last month when it was due to race but the meeting was washed out. Wet track is a
worry but I’ll trust Gillian’s judgement. She showed good pace in her latest trial win at the Gold Coast and
from barrier 13 Rodd will have the filly near the speed on the best part of the track. $10 with TAB Sportsbet
is good enough for me.
Ipioga ran a good race first up after a long spell. Travelled well in the run but condition gave out
late. She’ll be much better for that run and she is Group placed. She is talented enough to win this, whether
if she needs this run remains to be seen but the $21 is juicy and there appears to be good speed in the race
for her to charge home on her home track.
Zauberin will win a good race one day. He looks like a horse that will have to be followed for
the Cup next year. Stormed home in the Bendigo Cup behind Dream Pedlar. He’ll appreciate the bigger
surroundings of Flemington and he is on the limit with 53kg. Barrier 21 won’t be an issue as he likes to be
ridden cold so Shinn will angle him across and put him to sleep. If he gains a start, he’ll prove hard to beat.
Plenty to like about Flying Tessie’s first up effort at Caulfield when screaming home from
the tail and going down in a blanket finish. She’ll drift back from barrier 11 and Nash will have her in a
threatening position getting a trial, either behind Dollops or Jersey Lily. She has the talent to win this race
and showed that last campaign when racing well during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. $26 is massive overs.
Cyndiana Star had really good form last preparation. She was competitive against horses like
Soul, Breitling, Royal Bender and General Truce. Looked very slick in a recent Newcastle barrier trial and
we know she handles the tough assignment which is racing down the Flemington straight course. She’ll be
leading, and leading clearly. She is unbeaten first up and may prove too nippy here at $31. This race kicks
off the Big 6 with $207 000 and $425 000 jackpots for NSW and Victorian punters respectively.
Marvellous Miss really struggled behind Zubbaya at Moonee Valley but that can be put down to
a classy race and that the tight circuit didn’t suit her. She is a handy filly on her day and this race isn’t strong
nine of the acceptors racing in ordinary country Victorian races last start. Hall will have her in a plum spot
from barrier five and the track should have dried out by then to a Dead 5 which she’ll relish.
The stats are against So You Think. Only two horses have completed the Mackinnon-
Melbourne Cup double- Let’s Elope and Rogan Josh. Only Pharlap (1930) and Rising Fast (1954) have
done the Cox Plate-Mackinnon-Melbourne Cup treble. If So You Think was to win on Tuesday, he can be
mentioned in the same breath as Pharlap. However, he has to run 3200m and I don’t think he can. If he
does, he’ll win by 10 lengths, but I’d rather back a horse that is proven at the distance and that horse is
Shocking. All of his runs this time have been very good, especially the Caulfield Cup where he should have
won and won easily. People are dismissing him after his run on Saturday, but he had the best sectionals
in the race except So You Think. The weight rise is a slight concern, the barrier won’t matter and he loves
Flemington and his preparation has been perfect leading up to this.
Very keen here on Hidden Wonder. Won the Belle of the Turf at Gosford in awesome style.
Ran a blinder in the Epsom and that form has been franked with Sacred Choice bolting in on Saturday. Kris
Lees doesn’t send them to Sydney, let alone Melbourne if he doesn’t think they can run a big race and I am
expecting her to go close to winning against a weak field.
Perturbo couldn’t match the brilliance of Hay List in the Gilgai last start. Surprised many with a
win at Moonee Valley prior to the Flemington run after coming from well back. He likes to be ridden back and
there is plenty of speed in this race so Benny Melham will give this horse every chance to swoop here at the
end of the race.
Punter’s should end the day with a winner here in Launay. Ran a cracking race first up behind
boom Queenslander Faster Son. He has won second up and can handle the wet. A very good horse at his
best and from barrier five, McEvoy will have the horse in a lovely position, ready to pounce. He looks the
goods in what looks to be an open race.
