The Belmont Winter Carnival continues this Saturday where it is Belmont Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:43) Go Racing For Free Before The Footy Plate 1300m
I think with more upside in the locker, 3 Cryptic Wonder (Bet Now: $1.65) is the way to go. Debuted over 1200m here two weeks ago where he landed in the box seat under Pike and from there it was a relatively painless watch, getting into the clear at the top of the straight and winning impressively without really being fully extended. More upside and up to 1300m, he’ll do me.
2 No Apology (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Simon Miller trained youngster who comes through the Cryptic Wonder race from two weeks back and I thought his effort in defeat was good. Gave the winner 2kg and was off the bit on the turn, but he kept finding and got within a half length of the winner. Looks to have come back well this time in and should run another honest race.
7 Rocky Path (Bet Now: $7.00) hasn’t been too bad in her career to date for the Vaughn Sigley team, racing five times and placing on four occasions, the latest coming last Saturday when back and closing off strongly to place behind Mia Dolce. Up in trip I like and did place on a bog on debut on Good Friday, so wet track no issue and is a definite knockout chance.
Race 2. (15:23) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (76+) 1200m
4 Battle Storm (Bet Now: $1.40) looks the way to go. Exciting prospect for Adam Durrant who is 5/5 to start his career, his latest win coming over 1000m here two weeks ago against three rivals where Pike was always in control of the race and he won impressively, with his late splits again being some of the best of the meeting. See no reason to jump off or look elsewhere.
The market will be the guide here because there are some nice types in this race, one of which is 1 Belter (Bet Now: $7.50), a speed demon for Sean Casey that is first up, having not raced since leading and tiring late in the Pinjarra Classic behind Vital Silver, with that horse beating Galaxy Star recently, so that form reads so well and his trial win was very sharp to the eye.
5 Multiverse (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Gary Crispin trained gelding who is in ripping form at the moment. Five weeks between runs since scoring an impressive win over this track/distance in a race where the form has been decent, with a couple of winners to come out of it. Wet track no issue, draws an inside gate and does have a lethal record at this track/distance.
Race 3. (16:03) Glenroy Chaff Handicap (70+) 1000m
7 Danny George (Bet Now: $5.00) has returned in great order for the Brett Pope stable. Loved the way he attacked the line to win first up down the Pinjarra straight before racing at this track/distance a fortnight ago where he again had the suck run behind the speed before angling clear and finishing hard late to nab Night Voyage on the peg. Harder here, but he’s flying, down in the weights…why not be with him.
2 Night Voyage (Bet Now: $3.30) was completely unwanted in betting when resuming over this track/distance two weeks ago but despite that, he got the good just off the speed, loomed large and hit the front, looking home, but was nabbed near the peg by Danny George. Massive tick for this horse is Pike being booked and now with the run under the belt, he’ll take some beating.
I wouldn’t drop off 5 How To Fly (Bet Now: $10.00) just yet. Adam Durrant trains this mare and I want to be forgiving of her two runs back from a break. Just got too far back first up behind Battle Storm before racing in the Danny George race when four wide no cover for the trip. Her trial leading into her resumption was very sharp so with better luck, keen to see how she goes.
Race 4. (16:39) Belmont Classic 2200m
4 Mystery Miss (Bet Now: $1.18) is a Team Williams trained filly who was an outstanding winner of the Belmont Guineas, which made her a near unbackable fav in the Belmont Oaks two weeks ago but if you took the shorts, you were never concerned as Pike made all the right moves on her and she was just too classy for her rivals. Looks a talented type that could measure up during the Carnival so keen to see how she goes.
3 Rivalry George (Bet Now: $8.00) is still a maiden for Brett Pope but he’s racing well and a maiden is his soon. Not sure it’s here, but I thought his effort in the Aquanita behind True Attraction was a beauty. Got held up for a few strides at a crucial stage and while it wouldn’t have changed the result, he should have finished a bit closer. If the Bob Peters runners are off their, he’s the one to beat them.
5 Cockatiel (Bet Now: $12.00) comes through the Belmont Oaks for Stephen Miller and I thought her run was very good. Got held up for a few strides when having something to offer and should have finished closer to Mystery Miss but in saying that, was well held. Doubt she turns the tables, but that’s the A1 form for this and that should ensure she runs top three.
Race 5. (17:15) Quayclean Handicap (1MW) 2000m
Keen to see 13 Zaratite (Bet Now: $2.15) in town for the Williams camp. He ran at Pinjarra last Thursday where he looked in a tricky spot on the turn but Brodie Kirby rode him an absolute treat, biding his time before getting clear air late and the horse did the rest, finishing over the top. Reckon he wants a bit further, but looks a decent prospect and confident he can measure up.
7 Celtic Court (Bet Now: $11.00) looks like he will eat up 2000m for Brett Pope. He ran over the mile here three weeks ago where he settled just off the speed before angling into the clear under Pike and the gelding dashed clear late despite laying in, recording an impressive win. Harder here and unknown at the trip, but looks to have good ability and racing as if 2000m will suit.
8 Dealing (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Trade Fair who resumed over 1500m last Thursday at Pinjarra when wide no cover on speed for the trip but despite that, he loomed large to win in the straight. Just condition gave out late after that trip. If he’s taken no harm from that outing, the set up here looks ideal and is a clear winning chance. Just how he’s recovered is the unknown.
Race 6. (17:50) Amelia Park Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Think the talented four year old 7 Moet De Vega (Bet Now: $5.00) can resume a winner. Sean Casey trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since December 22 when a close up fifth at Ascot behind the above average and then in form Neurological. Is a good horse on the fresh and looks ready to go first up if his Lark Hill trial win is any guide. Happy to be in his corner here.
Want to be very forgiving of 2 Father Knick (Bet Now: $5.50) and his failure behind Spirit And Fire from a fortnight back. He was forced to sit three wide early, doing work, before eventually slotting, but by the time that happened, the sprint went on and he couldn’t match it with them late in a total forgive run. He’s better than that, so giving him another chance.
12 Klondike Kenny (Bet Now: $51.00) is a son of Kendel Star for Brett Pope who had trialled up okay prior to resuming at this track/distance last Wednesday where he got back in the run before peeling wide and presenting to do something positive, but he didn’t go on with it behind Lord Ludlow. Has a good second up record so an improved showing wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 7. (18:25) Crown Perth Handicap (76+) 1400m
I think 4 Neurological (Bet Now: $1.95) is the way to go here for Martin Allan. Resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago when back in the run and making ground late behind the in form Stageman, who won again last Saturday to frank the form. Good lead is that Pike is booked to steer, has solid second up stats and though a query at 1400m, he does have a touch of class.
2 War God (Bet Now: $5.00) has been pretty good at his past couple for Neville Parnham. Gave them a galloping lesson over this track/distance two back before racing under the same set up and trying hard on speed, but tiring late when fourth to Nikitas. Proven weight carrier and looks to find the lead, where he will roll and give them something to chase. Hard to beat.
I think a firmer track will help 8 Jetoomy (Bet Now: $41.00). He comes through the Nikitas race from two weeks ago over 1300m here where he tried hard from off the pace but couldn’t really properly let down on the shifty track. He gets on top of the ground this time around and draws to get a good run just off a potentially genuine speed. Knockout chance for sure.
Race 8. (19:00) Back Pike Drink What You Like Handicap (64+) 1400m
I think David Harrison might have figured out the key to 15 Snowchino (Bet Now: $5.50) and that is keeping her to 1400m. Just found the mile a stretch two back, so he stepped the filly back to this track/distance last Wednesday and it resulted in a dominant win from off the pace. She’s always showed talent but has mixed her form. Hopefully she can go on with it now.
13 Resistance (Bet Now: $8.00) is going well for Fred Kersley but she’s struggling to get a win next to her name. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where she got back in the run like she usually does and like she usually does as well, finished off well in an eye catching fifth to Moschard. Been a year since she has won, so I couldn’t back her to win, but concede she’s a chance here.
5 Reveille (Bet Now: $10.00) is an Adam Durrant trained mare that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since February 2 at Ascot when down the track behind Crystal Valley, who was flying at the time. Reveille was found to be lame post race, so a clear excuse there. Been given a good break and her two trials in readiness for her return have been quite pleasing, so keen to see how she goes fresh.
