Nine races will be run and won at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:00) Laughing Jack Wines 2YO Plate 1000m
5 Emconi Star (Bet Now: $3.30) is an Equiano filly having her first start for the Hayes/Dabernig team. This girl has had two jump outs for her first start, the latest being last Friday where she wanted to a bit wrong on the turns hence the lugging bit going on, but responded and looked to move quite well. Has the rail to guide her and has the claim for young Kersley.
1 Sebrakate (Bet Now: $1.95) was somewhat unwanted in betting in the small field when debuting here a fortnight back on the Parks track but despite that, he showed a lovely turn of foot from off the pace and got the job done. Think the depth here is a bit stronger, but he does have the race experience on his side.
4 Power Scheme (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained son of Fiorente having his first start. He trialled a couple of weeks back at Tatura behind Zorro Macho and looked to move quite well despite being well beaten. Jamie Kah takes the steer and I think he’ll get the sit off Emconi Star and have last look.
Race 2. (13:35) UBET Maiden Plate 1050m
3 Euroglider (Bet Now: $4.80) for me. Michael Hickmott trains this gelding, who debuted in a Gawler 2YO late last year and was far from disgraced behind an above average type in the ill fated Chicago Typewriter. Had a long time off but to my eye was very good in a recent trial on the Parks track last week behind Papalet.
13 Pam’s Journey (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Good Journey filly for the Francis/Kent team who has been quite good in two career outings. Solid enough on debut behind Bayou before going to Gawler where she led and just felt the pinch late behind Symphonette. Back to 1050m, she has the speed to lead and give a great sight.
2 Equimoore (Bet Now: $31.00) is a son of Equiano resuming for the Ricky Moore team. This bloke contested a couple of Gawler maidens in the early part of the Winter and while he didn’t win, he wasn’t too bad I thought. Trialled well last week, albeit the time was nothing flash. Doubt he wins, but he can add value to exotics.
Race 3. (14:10) Oktoberfest By Barossa Fine Foods Maiden Plate 1200m
I’ll take a chance on 13 Havana Heat (Bet Now: $3.00), formerly with Lloyd Kennewell but is now with Will Clarken. This bloke showed good promise as a two year old despite not winning, running a couple of rippers behind Tequila Time, the best two year old in SA last season. Now with Clarken, and I thought his trial behind Orbost was outstanding.
6 Fighting Dragon (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Fighting Sun colt for the Hayes/Dabernig team who was unwanted in betting when debuting in what looked a solid maiden at the Valley and I thought he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Kaplumpich, a maiden which had depth. Back to this level, he’s very likeable.
Tony McEvoy had a couple of runners nominated for this race but goes with the sole representative in 14 Rebel Romance (Bet Now: $10.00), a Rebel Raider filly having her first start. She’s had a stack of trials dating back nearly 12 months but looks to have ability based on what I’ve seen. Interesting to see what the market does.
Race 4. (14:45) AAMI Youngcare Grants Handicap (82) 2600m
It looks a good race for 1 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $4.80) but you can’t be confident given he hasn’t won for a long time. He comes through the Ansett Classic at Mornington where he was outclassed but far from disgraced for mine behind stablemate Haripour. This looks his right level and the 2600m should be no issue. Keen on him but do I want to charge in with my coin? Have to wait for the odds.
6 Tropical Lightning (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Travis Doudle trained galloper who is racing quite well at the moment without winning. Attempted to lead all the way over 2250m a fortnight ago on the Parks track and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it out when third to Johnny Vinko. Distance a query, but he tries hard.
2 Bling Dynasty (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Paul Preusker trained stayer who comes through the Ansett Classic and that level is probably just a bridge too far for him but he stuck on okay in defeat behind Haripour. Stable has had a really good run recently when bringing horses to Adelaide and this horse finds a very winnable race here.
Race 5. (15:25) Darley Handicap (75) 2035m
I reckon 3 Crafty Devil (Bet Now: $2.80) is ticking over quite nicely for Darren Weir. She ran over 2000m at Caulfield last time in the Inglis Cup where she got well back off the pace but finished off strongly late in the piece when a close up fifth to stablemate Bondeiger. Just a bit tricky here for her but on form she’s likeable.
I think 4 Aagas (Bet Now: $3.50) can only run well here. He was a month between runs when racing over the mile here last Saturday and you could make a very strong case that he should have won. Just had no luck when looking for a run but when he got clear, he savaged the line when third to Ruomaza. Up to 2000m straight away is ideal and has upside.
7 Ambishop (Bet Now: $81.00) is a mare who could add some value to exotics. Ran over 2100m at Gawler last time where I thought it was a lovely steer from Finnegan that got the four year old mare home. She remains on and gets a soft draw. Should get an economical run near the inside and be strong at the end.
Race 6. (16:05) Rebel Raider Series Final 1200m
Just has to tick the 1200m box and I think 1 Gytrash (Bet Now: $2.70) will be winning. Gordon Richards trains this promising three year old, who hasn’t raced since running a narrow second to Blue Diamond winner Written By at Caulfield. Been given a little freshen up and went super to my eye in a recent trial here.
6 Bayou (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of Sepoy for the Jolly camp who finally broke through for the maiden win last time out over 1100m here, showing good sustained speed throughout to lead all the way. That was four weeks ago, but has been kept up to the mark with a solid trial here recently behind the talented Orbost.
4 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Gordon Richards trained son of Bradbury’s Luck who had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1250m on the Parks track a fortnight back and a few punters were keen on his chances, and he won accordingly under a lovely steer just off the pace from Anna Jordsjo. More depth here, but I like the way he goes about it.
Race 7. (16:50) Hit107 Handicap (70) 1200m
Will Clarken has 4 Columbia (Bet Now: $3.30) flying. Most unlucky in the first run for the new stable four weeks back behind Fill The Flute after getting badly held up in the straight. Been freshened up and his trial last Thursday was outstanding. Solid 1200m tempo, he’ll get back and launch. Really keen on his chances.
I think you’ll get a guide here as to whether or not 8 Fleeting Feeling (Bet Now: $3.50) is a contender or pretender. She’s promised a fair bit in her career, but to date has only won the two races, a Cranbourne maiden and a 64 at Balaklava. Most disappointing last time but on her best form, she’s certainly up to beating these and perhaps getting back onto the bigger track will help.
5 Bwuva (Bet Now: $9.00) was solid enough here two back behind Fill The Flute before going to Gawler where he had the 1/1 sit and looked to be going well but just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Prickles. Becoming a hard horse to follow and trust but when he’s at his best, he’s certainly capable of beating these.
Race 8. (17:26) So Brave Breast Cancer Awareness Handicap (70) 1050m
Can see them going hard here, and I think 9 Scottish Rogue (Bet Now: $2.50) should get the lovely sit off the pace and have last look. Handy three year old for Tony McEvoy that resumes after a pretty strong 2YO season, which ended at Flemington behind Good ‘N’ Fast in the Taj Rossi Final. Recent jump out was good and does have a touch of quality.
1 Big Effort (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Sharon Hayes trained gelding that resumes. He’s a massive horse that’s pretty much all legs but he definitely has ability. Has to lump the 61kg but being a big horse, he should be okay with that and did trial well behind Nodoubtaboutit, who bolted up a couple of weeks back.
2 Zalmona (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Peter Blanch trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment and has to be respected here. He hasn’t raced for five weeks since being outclassed on the Parks track behind Heptagon. Back to 70 grade, looked sharp in a recent trial and is better suited on the course proper.
Race 9. (18:05) MJS Floorcoverings Handicap (64) 1600m
Keen to see what 11 Valley Of Light (Bet Now: $2.80) does here. Former UK stayer who had made her Australian debut for Will Clarken in a Strathalbyn maiden and for the most part it looked as if it would be a tough watch but she got clear and once she did, she exploded and won well. Harder here, but been kept up to the mark via a nice trial and bigger track should suit.
7 Chapal (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Tony McEvoy trained gelding who resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since late May at Gawler when running a solid second to More Than Fabulous, who at the time was going quite well. Fresh at 1600m is an ask but has been tuned up for the return with a couple of solid trials and overall, I don’t think this race is strong.
2 Silent Command (Bet Now: $9.50) could be an improver at odds. Nick Smart trains this gelding, who is third up here, so he should just about be ready to show his best. Ran over the mile at the Valley last time and wasn’t beaten far behind a handy galloper in Bad Wolf. Horror draw, but if he overcomes it, he’s in the game.
