A solid eight race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday, and while there are no feature races, the depth looks okay post the Summer Carnival. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:48) Yellowglen Maiden 1100m
Very ordinary maiden to kick off the day. Going with 8 Amaya (Bet Now: $3.00) but I wouldn’t say confidence levels are high. Daughter of Oratorio who resumes after a two run prep in the Winter to kick off her career where didn’t really fire at all. But, she did trial up well at Belmont last week and Pike, who rode in the trial, sticks.
5 Princess Zelda (Bet Now: $2.50) has the best form of the raced brigade. She has had seven career outings and has placed both runs this prep, the latest at Bunbury when second to the very impressive How To Fly. That form does read well for this. I think back up to 1100m will also suit so she’s right in the game.
4 Tokyo Lad (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Husson Lightning gelding on debut for the Jesse Byrne yard. This horse has trialled all the way back to May 2016 so has clearly had issues, but his three trials this prep have been okay without being great. But okay is good enough to be competitive here because it’s a race with no depth.
Race 2. (16:28) Crown Towers Handicap (71+) 2100m
Keen on 4 Jackpot Prince (Bet Now: $3.20). Adam Durrant trained stayer who resumed over the mile here on New Nears Day and was a real eye catcher late in the piece behind Woodsville. He has a stack of upside and I think he will love the rise to 2100m. If he’s close enough on the turn, I think his class and staying prowess will come to the fore.
2 Gunnago (Bet Now: $4.60) is the interesting runner. On ability he’s probably the best horse in the race but is having his first crack beyond 2000m. Ran over 1800m here last Saturday and worked home well when third to Cruachan. Personally, would like to see him on speed because I don’t think he can come from behind and win.
8 Toppa Dawozza (Bet Now: $16.00) drops miles in grade after contesting the Perth Cup last time. He started bolters odds and ran accordingly when finishing down the track behind Material Man. Run prior at this level was quite good. He is a bludger, but he should get a soft run and is always a must for multiples.
Race 3. (17:08) Heineken 3 Handicap (1MW) 2100m
8 Kia Ora Star (Bet Now: $12.00) for me. Michael Lane trains this four year old who will love the step up in trip I feel. He ran over 2000m at Pinjarra a fortnight ago and just got a mile back off them but you had to like the way he finished off in restricted room behind No Say In It. He has plenty of room to improve and 2100m on the big track looks ideal.
2 At The Ready (Bet Now: $4.50) is four weeks between runs for the Adam Durrant team after resuming over the mile here and if you were on, sorry to remind you. He would have gone close to winning but just had no luck at all in the straight and went to the line under a hold. Up to 2100m is perfect and Pike is on.
7 Scooner (Bet Now: $8.50) is a bludger but he goes in multiples. Ran over the Pinjarra mile two weeks back and just got a mile out of his ground but was doing his best work late behind Missile Launch. He will be suited up to 2100m and his best efforts since coming to WA have been when Brad Parnham steers.
Race 4. (17:43) Tabtouch Plate 1500m
He’s hit and miss, but I’ll bank on Pike getting the best out of the well bred 5 State Prosecutor (Bet Now: $8.00). He resumed in a Class One at Bunbury a tick over three weeks back and worked home well late behind Light The Fuse even though he was a hard odds on pop. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, mainly due to Pike steering.
2 Lucky Roar (Bet Now: $9.00) is a daughter of So Secret with a fair bit of promise. She ran over the Pinjarra mile a fortnight back and with some assistance from a lovely ride from Jason Brown, the filly dived through, got the gap and toughed it out best to score. Draws awkwardly but the blinkers go on first time to sharpen her up.
7 Burning Pride (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Blackfriars filly first up for the Ken Adams team. She made a good impression in her first prep during the Winter, winning on debut before placing in a strong 2YO race at Belmont. First up at 1500m is never easy, but she did look to trial well recently at Belmont. Definite market watch.
Race 5. (18:20) Ascot Autumn Handicap (72+) 1500m
7 Taxadermy (Bet Now: $7.00) looks one of the better bets on the program. Lindsey Smith trains this seven year old, who was a real drifter in betting when resuming at Bunbury last Wednesday but despite the drift, he was far too classy for his rivals. Goes even better second up and gets really good weight relief. Keen.
2 Senso (Bet Now: $7.00) is absolutely flying this prep for the Paul Jordan team. He ran over 1400m at Pinjarra two weeks ago and worked home with real purpose from near last to run a close up fourth to Red Publisher. If he is able to sit closer in the run from the good draw, he’ll be a definite threat for sure.
1 Settler’s Creek (Bet Now: $9.00) finished down the track in the Red Publisher race but I think you have to forgive him for that run. He was wide no cover for the trip then was forced even wider on the turn. Then he got tightened near the line, so he would have finished closer, but not win. If he gets cover, he can bounce back.
Race 6. (19:00) Vale Phyllis Morris Handicap (1MW) 1200m
9 Fraternize (Bet Now: $3.50) on top for me. Team Pearce trains this galloper, who had good market support when resuming here three weeks back where he attempted to lead all the way and he gave a really good kick but just couldn’t quite see it out when third to Disco Riffic. Now he has the run under the belt, he’ll be stronger.
10 Klondike Kenny (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Kendel Star that is racing in career best form at the moment for the Brett Pope team. He ran over 1200m at Pinjarra a fortnight ago and I thought his run in defeat was enormous. Got back and wide in a slowly run affair yet still attacked the line to run second to Pinball Wizard. Right in this for sure.
Keep an eye on 4 Gangbuster (Bet Now: $11.00), a handy stayer that resumes for the Trevor Andrews yard. He hasn’t raced since mid July when finishing near last behind Danehills Daughter. Comes here with no trials under the belt but can sprint well fresh, so I’d keep a close eye on the market and see what it does.
Race 7. (19:35) Glenroy Chaff Handicap (66+) 1100m
11 Shackleton (Bet Now: $3.60) looks one of the more interesting runners on the program. Former Waterhouse/Bott galloper that was gelded and now is with Chris Gangemi, where he has won two for two, both coming here over 1000m and 1100m respectively. Toughest test to date, but gets really good weight relief and a soft draw.
3 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $13.00) is on the seven day back up for the Parnham yard after racing here last Saturday where he had the box seat sit throughout and tried hard when fourth to Helms Gate. I think there is less depth here to what he faced last Saturday. Fitter now, just needs to overcome the sticky gate.
1 The Celt (Bet Now: $27.00) is a handy galloper for Vaughn Sigley who resumed down the straight at Pinjarra in what was a very messy affair. He had outside rail and looked to be going okay but just couldn’t sprint. Much better suited around the bend and has a really good second up record. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 8. (20:15) Tabtouch Handicap (1MW) 1600m
4 My Grace (Bet Now: $6.00) for me in the get out. If you were on this mare last Wednesday at Bunbury…oh dear. Hard to say if she would have won, but she would have gone close with clear air. Just blocked for the entire straight when bolting. Pike on, drawn out…hopefully he can end the day right for punters.
10 The Rake (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Duporth who is racing so well at the moment for Brett Pope. Thought there was a touch of dominance about his win last Wednesday over the 1700m at Bunbury, rounding them up from last and winning with a bit in hand. Toughest test to date, but I think he can measure up.
5 Checkers (Bet Now: $15.00) is on the seven day back up for the Parnham team . Ran over 1400m here last Saturday where he got back off the speed but worked home strongly late behind Oliver’s Travels, and probably should have finished closer had he not wanted to lay in. If he does everything right, I think he’s in the game for sure.
