A ripping program has been assembled for Coffs Harbour this Thursday where it is Coffs Harbour Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:25) Ooh Media Maiden Plate 1300m
Landed with 2 San Marco (Bet Now: $4.60) in a pretty strong maiden. This gelding is hard fit and ready to go for this 1300m assignment after racing in a 1200m maiden during the Grafton Carnival where he got off the pace and chased hard down the straight but just missed out on picking up Usurp. Races as if the 1300m will suit and looks the one for me.
8 Meccabah (Bet Now: $2.25) is such an interesting runner. Former UK galloper making his Australian debut for Matty Dunn with Bowman steering, so clearly looks to be intent to win first up. Best form came over further when overseas but she looked forward in a Deagon trial to the eye and looks to get a good run in transit.
3 Ultimate Eagle (Bet Now: $46.00) started $201 in the Big Maiden during the Grafton Carnival but despite being completely unwanted, I thought he worked home well enough behind Usurp. Draw makes things tough, but if he can get three wide and a drag up into the race, he could add value to exotics if that scenario unfolds.
Race 2. (13:00) All Way Party Hire Handicap (58) 1000m
There is a couple of horses here I put in the blackbook that I think would target this Carnival and indeed this race and they are here. The first of which I’ll be backing is 12 No Qualm (Bet Now: $21.00). Warrwn Gavenlock trains him here and he resumed over 1100m during the Grafton Carnival where he just looked a bit big in condition and ran accordingly but he finished off quite well despite lacking fitness. If it was a wet track, I’d be more keen on him going close, but even on dry ground, he’ll run well.
The other horse I’ll be backing is 9 Plectrum (Bet Now: $9.50), who is second up for another local trainer in Paul Smith. He had a gut as big as mine when resuming at this track/distance and that just told late. He got the inside split, was there to dash and win, but just ran out of puff. He’ll come right on from that and I’d be shocked if he didn’t measure up.
4 Gripped (Bet Now: $13.00) is the very interesting runner. This bloke was formerly trained with Wayne Wilkes but is now with Brett Dodson and resumes on the home track on the big day. Just smells of a horse wound up to win first up. His form when with Wilkes reads much better than most of these. 1000m is short of his best, but he’s got class.
Race 3. (13:35) The Blinkan Missit 800m
As you’d expect, they will go crazy in front here. Hopefully 4 Gunnaza (Bet Now: $6.00) can have last say on them. He won the prelude to this race last time out where he was well backed and got a similar run to what he’ll get here. Parked off the brutal tempo and had last crack at them. Hopefully won’t be far away from the gate and be strong late.
3 Just A Bullet (Bet Now: $2.90) would be a near moral had he drawn better, but with a stack of speed inside, he will have to work for it. He didn’t have to work too hard to win the Kirby during the Grafton Carnival, controlling things beautifully in front and kicking clear late. He’ll look the winner at some stage…just concerned he’ll spend a lot of petrol tickets outside a hot speed.
8 Always Sacred (Bet Now: $21.00) has had two runs for the Maryan Brosman team and has been quite good each start, running second both times. Second to Oradonna first up at the Sunny Coast, beaten seven lengths, before racing at this track/distance and flashing home behind Gunnaza. Sitting back with cover and launching looks his go, which is ideal for this race.
Race 4. (14:15) Schweppes Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
Back Me: Tough meeting, but 3 Loose Goose (Bet Now: $2.35) does look the good thing. Matty Dunn trains this mare, who resumed over 1000m during the Grafton Carnival where she had the suck run near the speed, presented, loomed, looked the winner but was bloused late by Patriot. Up to 1200m, good second up record, Bowman on…very likeable.
12 Ambitious Prince (Bet Now: $11.00) has had a couple of runs this time in for Warren Gavenlock and looks ready to rock and roll third up from a spell. Resumed with a narrow second at Taree behind So Shy before going to Ballina where he was good but no match for the impressive Supernormal. 1400m would have been lovely, but a strong 1200m will be no huge issue.
15 Guided (Bet Now: $34.00) could be the big improver. He’s third up from a spell and is trained on the track by Brett Dodson. Eye catching resumption at Taree behind Blinkin Awesome before going to Grafton where he again got back in the run but finished off strongly to run fourth to dominant winner Pajados. Back up to 1200m will really suit.
Race 5. (14:50) Ken Howard Cup 2000m
He’s an old nemesis of mine but I reckon Brett Bellamy has 14 Star Fest (Bet Now: $14.00) going really well at the moment. Ran in the Sawtell Cup last time out and I liked the way he finished his race off from the back when a close up third to Eight Below. He’s racing as if the 2000m will suit, home track and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
Marcus Wilson has 3 Meteorologist (Bet Now: $7.50) flying this prep. Resumed with a narrow second to Future Event over 1400m at the Gold Coast prior to racing in the Sawtell Cup over 1500m here when catching teh eye late behind Eight Below. Up to 2000m looks perfect and if he can overcome the gate, he’s right in the game.
10 Light Motion (Bet Now: $26.00) can be a bit of a bludger at times but Shane Everson has the veteran in near career best form. Really good effort two back over the Grafton mile behind Cantillate before backing up a week later over 1700m there and being pipped late by Lope de Lope. Yet to fire a shot in four runs at Coffs, but hasn’t been going better.
Race 6. (15:25) Daniel Baker Sprint 1200m
I reckon 14 Under The Thumb (Bet Now: $7.00) could be a sleeper at odds. Sue Grills trains this gelding, who is first up here. He hasn’t raced since bolting up in a preview of a Championship Qualfier at Scone and getting rewards for a very good prep, which saw him get within a lip of beating Victorem. Can sprint well fresh and that form does read well.
13 Still Undaunted (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Duporth for Brett Cavanough who has been going quite well this time in. He ran during the Grafton Carnival in the John Carlton when working home well to run second to the above average galloper King Lear in a race that smashed the track record. He’s got a very good winning strike rate and a hard 1200m is no issue.
9 Red Letter Day (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Ben Hull trained veteran who comes back to 1200m after contesting the Maclean Cup last time at Grafton on trial for the Grafton Cup and while he ran on, he didn’t run on well enough behind Zamex to warrant a start at the mile. Fast run 1200m will suit and he can blouse these with luck in running.
Race 7. (16:05) Coffs Harbour Cup 1600m
To say 12 Zamex (Bet Now: $4.40) is well placed would be an understatement. Just looks the winner barring bad luck. Matty Dunn trains this four year old, who comes here off the back of a dominant win in the Maclean Cup during the Grafton Carnival just under three weeks back, bolting up from off the pace under Jake Hull. Looks well placed up to the mile and there should be good speed.
5 Cogliere (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Marc Quinn trained four year old who comes here off a last start win during the Grafton Carnival. He was hard in the market in the South Grafton Cup and under a lovely steer from Matty McGuren, the son of Pluck showed good fight in the straight to get the job done. He’ll love a truly run mile and is a winner here.
11 Glitra (Bet Now: $14.00) has had two runs for the Hulbert team and gee I think he’s gone well each time he has stepped out. Resumed over 1400m at the Sunny Coast when on speed and fighting on well when third to the in form Bluebrook before a solid third over the Doomben mile behind the talented Pressway. Ran well in this race last year when John Sprague had him. Looks to be going better this time around.
Race 8. (16:45) Merv Mercer Mile (Class 2) 1600m
Hard to back anything with confidence here. 8 Falsified (Bet Now: $19.00) is going in near career best form at the moment for Peter Cheers. Surged hard to win two back over 1350m at Cessnock before racing over 1300m at Taree where she just missed on picking up I’ll Take Money. She’s racing as if she’ll appreciate the mile so happy to give her the nod.
1 Evopex (Bet Now: $2.15) was an absolute pest when racing in Victoria but in two runs for Jim Jarvis, he’s been quite good. Eye catching resumption at Grafton behind recent Doomben winner Looks Like Elvis prior to racing over 1400m here where he was well backed and under Matty McGuren, the gelding finished best. Up to the mile no issue, trained here, upside…very likeable. Just a shame about the gate.
7 Ask The Price (Bet Now: $91.00) could be one to include in wider exotics. He resumed at Lismore where the market said he’d need the run and that’s how it panned out behind My Boy Louie. He’ll improve up to the mile, speed should be genuine, trained here and if they do indeed go hard in front, he’ll be strong late.
