The Sunshine Coast will host a bumper nine race card this Saturday for O’Shea Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:42) Stanley River Thoroughbreds Plate (Class 6) 1000m
12 Spending To Win (Bet Now: $2.00) looks the obvious. Continual placegetter who continues to run well without winning. He comes through the Ortensia during the Scone Carnival where he ran a beauty I thought behind To Excess. This is a considerable drop in depth for him and looks the one to beat here.
14 Rebel Miss (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Matty Smith trained filly who doesn’t win out of turn but she certainly has the ability and class to go close. She ran at Rosehill last time out where she was close up behind Epidemic in a race which had depth to it. Should get back and look to launch late. Just whether or not she has the desire.
8 Frequendly (Bet Now: $35.00) is a daughter of Sequalo that resumes for the Les Ross team. This girl certainly has the ability to go close and winning here with the right run in transit. Resumes with no trials but has a pretty good fresh record and if they go hard in front, look for her to launch late against this lot.
Race 2. (13:17) UBET Handicap 1000m
5 Miss Exfactor (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. She is a short course specialist so the 1000m here looks ideal. Looked a good thing first up over 900m at the Gold Coast and despite a market drift, her class got her home late and she was far too good. 1200m is probably a stretch at this level so keeping her to the short course is a big tick.
8 Envy Of All (Bet Now: $5.50) is a quality filly for Kris Lees who resumed in the Denise’s Joy during the Scone Carnival where she got back in the run but closed off strongly late when fourth to In Good Time. She is a swimmer so the rain affected track is perfect for her and the Lloyd/Lees combo, when they do combine, is lethal.
2 Bring It Home Pop (Bet Now: $5.50) is a very talented son of Rothesay that resumes for Darryl Hansen. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Summer Carnival where he contested a couple of lead ups to the Magic Millions Guineas, finishing down the track behind Whypeeo and Pierata. Resumes with no trials but has class on his side.
Race 3. (13:57) The Phoenix 1600m
2 Sokudo (Bet Now: $2.35) is a Team Snowden trained youngster who comes here off just a maiden win but the maiden win at Newcastle was outstanding to the eye. Gee he let down with a lovely finish when asked for the effort and he put them away quite quickly. Up to the mile a big tick and is bred to handle a track with give in it.
1 Grim Reaper (Bet Now: $7.00) looks a nice gelding for the O’Dea team who ran over 1400m here last time out where he got a mile back in the run but gee he let down hard late to burst through and win impressively against a field which had depth to it. He races as if the mile will suit and for mine is a definite threat.
9 Miss Louisiana (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy looking filly for Anthony Freedman who hasn’t raced for a month since closing off strongly from the back to run fourth to Bronski Beat at Bendigo. Comes here off the back of a nice trial a couple of weeks back at the Gold Coast and I think the mile will be no issue for her.
Race 4. (14:37) Oxlade Stakes 1200m
Normal luck and I think 8 Granny Red Shoes (Bet Now: $3.40) wins. Her run in the Bill Carter was enormous I thought, sitting three and four wide throughout. She had every right to drop off but she kept finding the line and in the end it took a potential Group l horse in Eawase to get past her. First up win over 1000m here was electric, she’ll do me.
1 Only Wanna Sing (Bet Now: $7.50) could be the sharp improver. He’s taken on the better two year old races during the Carnival and has ran okay but but hasn’t quite measured up behind Mishani Hustler and Zousain respectively. Drops a fair bit in depth here I think, draws an inside gate and Browne steers. Question mark on that scenario after yesterday’s deeds, but I’ll include.
12 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $15.00) rises a bit in depth but there was a bit to like about her win at Grafton last time out against the older horses in a maiden, finishing off with real purpose late out wide to finish off hard and beat Almas, who came out and won on Monday, so the form has been franked and 1200m here looks ideal.
Race 5. (15:17) PJ O'Shea Stakes 2200m
7 Egg Tart (Bet Now: $2.00 FAT ODDS) should be winning this. The Doomben Cup was the first since the Oaks last year that she had been stepped out to the 2000m and the result was a narrow loss to stablemate Comin’ Through. She should eat up 2200m here and the track should have give in it. You’d think only bad luck beats her.
5 Tradesman (Bet Now: $7.00 FAT ODDS) was a horse I really liked in the Doomben Cup but he let me down badly. Seemingly had a good run just off the pace but when it came to the crunch time, he folded and was most disappointing. He did cop pressure outside him down the side in the race which he may have resented. Better placed here.
4 Megablast (Bet Now: $14.00 FAT ODDS), if we happen to get a genuinely wet track, comes right into play I feel. He lacks the class/brilliance of some of these, but is a pure wet tracker and will stay a tough 10+ furlongs. Bolted up fresh at Pukekohe before going to the Chairmans where I thought he was good late behind Anton En Avant. His best chance will be if we get a heavy surface.
Race 6. (15:57) Lightning Handicap 1000m
7 Tumbler (Bet Now: $2.80) is a high quality mare who is first up for the Barry Lockwood team. She has had her injury troubles but when she is right, she is certainly Stakes class. Hasn’t raced for around 10 months. Won brilliantly at this track/distance first up before placing at Doomben. Been given a good spell and her trial a couple of weeks back was very good.
4 Snoopy (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Chris Munce trained gelding who has been kept on the fresh side since racing in the Bat Out Of Hell at the Gold Coast where he got back and worked home strongly late behind the heavily backed Guard Of Honour. His best efforts do come when produced fresh and looks well placed.
11 Nicof (Bet Now: $61.00) is an absolute beauty for the Neil Osborne team. He can rattle off a very slick late split if he gets conditions to suit so I’m respecting him. He ran during the Scone Carnival and got a mile back in the run but worked home nicely late behind Akasaki. The pace will be on, he’ll get back and launch late.
Race 7. (16:40) Moreton Cup 1200m
He’s been up a while but really like 6 Handsome Thief (Bet Now: $5.00) against this lot. This bloke comes through the Goodwood at Morphettville where he was back and wide yet did an excellent job I thought to get as close as he did behind Santa Ana Lane. Big track, 1200m, give in the track…ticks all the boxes for me.
3 Calanda (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented son of Snitzel that resumes for the Snowden camp. He can be hit and miss but when the stable target a race, they rarely leave empty handed and I reckon this has been a target race first up. Good fresh horse and has been tuned up with a couple of really nice trials in Sydney.
1 Aide Memoire (Bet Now: $10.00) is a quality mare for Kris Lees who has to be seriously respected here. Her Autumn prep, without luck, but was very good in some high quality races. The key to her is finding a wet track and she gets it here. 1200m is short of her best, but the trial back home was very good. Big watch.
Race 8. (17:15) Helen Coughlan Stakes 1200m
18 Epidemic (Bet Now: $7.50) clearly on top for me. This girl is two for two this time in for Godolphin and James Cummings, both wins coming at Rosehill. Looked in a bit of trouble last time out but once she knuckled down, gee she finished off with purpose and got the win narrowly but impressively. Should get a sweet run from the gate and rates highly.
13 Crystal Fountain (Bet Now: $7.00) is an Anthony Freedman trained mare who was kept very safe in betting last time out in the Bright Shadow at Doomben where she had the good sit off the pace and tried hard but clearly no match for the impressive Secret Trail. If she gets cover, she should go close.
10 Conchita (Bet Now: $15.00) is a big watch. Paul Perry trains this filly, who can be really hit and miss at times but I think you have to believe what you saw last time out at Canterbury. She absolutely bolted in under Collett and looked like a world beater. Can she translate it here? Time will tell but I’m respecting her.
Race 9. (17:50) Spear Chief Handicap 1400m
If he can get away from the inside, I think at $15+, 17 Belfyer (Bet Now: $14.00) is a great each way play in the get out. Very good two back in the Tamworth Cup behind Plucky Girl before going to Rosehill where he should have finished closer but didn’t have luck behind Missile Coda. On the minimum and handles all conditions…just hoping gate one isn’t a negative.
9 Dreams Aplenty (Bet Now: $12.00) probably isn’t a WFA horse so being saved from last week looks ideal. Tough, tough win four weeks back in the Gold Coast Cup. Did it from the front and was there to be beaten but found. 1400m looks his pet trip so I suspect he will roll along on speed and give a great sight at odds for sure.
I reckon 7 Someday (Bet Now: $67.00) is a very interesting runner. Desleigh Forster trains this nine year old gelding, who is first up since February where he raced like a tired horse at Ipswich (Metro). Normally needs a run or two to find his best, but can sprint well fresh and his recent trial looked good to the eye.
