2/4/2018 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Sandown

Eight races will be run and won at Sandown on Monday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

I’ll take the punt that 11 Valeria Messalina (Bet Now: $2.80) is ready to go. Resumes for Richard Laming after a two run prep in the Spring to kick off the career where she showed good promise. Recent jump out at Cranbourne was good to the eye, she draws well…I think she’s short enough, but I’ll side with her, just.

7 Silence The Stars (Bet Now: $2.30) has been excellent in two runs back from a break for the Deanne Taylor team. Resumed with a gutsy second to Dixie Preacher at the Bool before going to Bendigo where he had no luck when full of momentum behind Lady Cartier. Good lead for mine that the stable finds Williams.

Doubt she wins but for multiples I’d include 10 Rosamond (Bet Now: $15.00) for the Brian Gentle team. This girl hasn’t raced for around three weeks since running a close up fifth on her home track at Bendigo behind Inwood, beaten just under three lengths. Gets the barrier blanket on because she can be a rogue in the gates. Had plenty of chances but trifectas/first fours I’d chuck her in.

Siding with 3 Box On Collins (Bet Now: $6.50). Trialled up enormous prior to resuming on the Parks track in Adelaide where he was dreadful I thought behind Ancient Echoes after seemingly having every chance in the run. Market support that day was very strong and interesting to note the tongue tie goes on, which may explain the flop. If he’s right, he goes close.

11 Sunquest (Bet Now: $4.00) is definitely in the conversation when it comes to the best maiden in Australia, but he just cannot put them away. Thought he was home last time out at Geelong but couldn’t withstand the finishing burst of Spring Choice, who came out and won the Mornington Guineas, so that form reads well, his overall form reads well…just needs to win.

15 Sporty (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Team Hawkes trained filly with a with a couple of solid runs in NSW under the belt who makes her Victorian debut. Last start was over 1400m at Newcastle where she tried hard but just died on the run late when third to Red Currant. Gets the Winkers and Visor on first time and she looks to map super.

Couple of horses I want to back here. First one is 6 Don’t Take No (Bet Now: $5.00), who looks a lovely type for the Andrew Payne team. Produced a lovely finale to break the maiden tag at Benalla before racing over 1300m here where she really should have won but just had no luck at all behind Uptown Lily. Give her normal luck and she’ll go very close.

11 Second Marriage (Bet Now: $4.50) is a John Price trained filly who has come back in outstanding order this prep. Both runs have come at Pakenham, resuming with a luckless third before getting the luck and spanking her rivals over 1200m, breaking the track record. On that run, she’ll have no issue with 1400m. Rates highly and is the other horse I want to be backing.

1 Miss Damita (Bet Now: $10.00) is a daughter of Ocean Park for the Mick Price team who was kept quite safe in betting when debuting over 1400m at Echuca and she absolutely bolted in under Michael Walker, running good time relative to the meeting and doing it with a bit in hand to the eye. Near double figures, I could easily make a case for her.

I think now she has that winning feeling again, I’ll side with 2 Angelic Spirit (Bet Now: $4.80). Just overdid it first up at Flemington behind Scarecrow and needed a confidence boost so she went to Ballarat and with some help from Michael Walker, the filly dashed away and was dominant. Think she can go on with it now.

3 Herecomesmybaby (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Richard Laming trained mare who has shown good promise in her short career to date. First two career outings came at Bendigo where she won on debut before placing behind Inwood. She then went to Pakenahm and was confidently ridden by Olly to score. Hard 1500m looks ideal for her and Olly sticks.

1 Almalita (Bet Now: $13.00) is a handy daughter of Al Maher that resumes for the Waterhouse/Bott team. This mare had a pretty solid Spring prep, most of which was at staying trips where she ran well for the most part, pretty much thereabouts throughout. Recent jump out was quite encouraging and she can sprint well fresh.

Want to be with 8 Toorak Cowboy (Bet Now: $4.20). Pat Carey trains this gelding, who was hard in the market at Mornington last time out but just got too far back in a slowly run affair, won by Brahmos, who was in the right spot at the right time. Better suited on bigger tracks too I feel so coming to Sandown, a track he has won at before, should suit.

13 Patricia Anne (Bet Now: $7.00) is the big unknown here. Staying mare from NZ that makes her Australian debut for the Anthony Freedman team. She’ll be at her best when she gets to 2000m+, but she has shown enough in jump outs to suggest she is above average, and her NZ form does read well for a race of this class.

3 Tigidig Tigidig (Bet Now: $11.00) is an absolute beauty for the Vincent Malady. Much maligned as a non winner but he has won six races and placed a further 17 times so you can’t begrudge his consistency. Lovely ride from Jamie Mott got the gelding home last time at Ballarat. Was a bunched finish and the depth looked suspect, but he is proven in town and looks to get a lovely run just off the pace.

2 That Rings A Bell (Bet Now: $4.80) is a talented daughter of So You Think that resumes for the Danny O’Brien team. This mare showed good promise in the Spring but ended the prep like a tired horse on Oaks Day behind Linguist. Goes very well fresh, Olly rides first up and her recent Flemington jump out was very good.

10 Super Snob (Bet Now: $8.00) can be a bit hit and miss at times, but we know that when she is on, he has a really decent motor on her. Ran over the short course at Echuca last week where she looked the winner for the most part when she loomed up but just found one better in Pravro. Should get a lovely run and gets the claim for Caserta.

11 Coral Coast (Bet Now: $14.00) is the real unknown here. Former Stuart Webb trained filly now with Anthony Freedman. She has only won the one race but did contest some quality races in the Spring, placing in a Gloaming behind Ace High. 1300m is short of her best, but she certainly has enough quality to figure somewhere.

The $10 for 13 William Thomas (Bet Now: $4.20) was outstanding so no surprise to see him firm to the price he is now. He is a high quality animal for the John Price team who had a two run Spring prep to kick off the career. Scored a huge win on debut at Ararat before going to Flemington on Cup Day and placing behind Prezado. Recent jump out at Cranbourne over 1000m was outstanding and he looks ready to go.

8 Esperance (Bet Now: $2.30) is the big unknown here. James Cummings trains this three year old gelding, who is first up here after a mixed Spring prep where he showed good promise early on in the campaign but the form tailed away a touch in the end where he contested better races. Looks to have come back well…short enough in the market.

1 Raja Ampat (Bet Now: $31.00) is a former Queenslander making his Victorian debut for the John Moloney team. Some will see that the Queensland form is an unknown, but a recent run is easy to tie in for Victorian punters via Time To Torque, who has run well in Melbourne before. Look for this horse to get back and charge home.

17 Woulda Thought So (Bet Now: $5.50) on top for me in the get out. Hayes/Dabernig train this gelding, who resumed under the lights at Pakenham where he was wide throughout, and back in a slowly run affair, but worked home really well late in the piece behind Mastering. Looks to be good speed here, so he’ll get his chance to run on.

5 Lakhoni (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Michael Moroney trained three year old who looks loaded with talent. Crunched in betting when resuming at Bendigo and despite looking in a bit of trouble on the turn, he finished best and looked great on the line. Horror draw to overcome, but I’ll leave that with the gun apprentice Fred Kersley.

If we get a really firm track here, on speed may well be the place to be and a horse like 12 Stringer Bell (Bet Now: $15.00) could give a great sight. Just had to do a bit too much work to find the lead last time out at Bendigo and felt the pinch late to run fourth. Should find the front here and he gets in well with the claim for Ethan Brown.
