Eight races will be run and won on the Parks track at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:56) 36° South Handicap 1000m
The first starters are unknown, so by default it’s 3 Inzaghi (Bet Now: $1.80) on top for Anthony Freedman, who has had two career outings, the latest at Sale when on speed and sticking on well in defeat behind a handy one I think in Done By Me. Bit of guessing work (great for SA racing I know), with the first starters but this girl looks to have ability and should be winning.
1 Dalasan (Bet Now: $3.30) is a son of Dalakhani for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable that is on debut. This colt hasn’t been seen in public re trials, and the breeding suggests he’ll need further, but always on guard with this stable with their youngsters because every now and then they can produce a handy juvenile so I’d watch the market with him and see what it does.
2 Magic Phantom (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Magic Albert who is on debut for the Jon O’Connor stable. The dam Matignon won a few races up in Queensland and was a handy mare. Another youngster that hasn’t been seen at the trials, but another that stable that are very astute with their babies and the breeding suggests he will be built for speed. Interesting to see if he measures up.
Race 2. (14:31) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (70) 1000m
If 2 Schilldora (Bet Now: $1.55) is right, she should be too good for this lot. The Jolly camp trains this filly, who won her first starts in the Spring in impressive fashion before racing down the straight at Flemington on Oaks Day where she ran a ripping fourth to Bleu Roche. Resumes without a trial but if she’s anywhere near right, her class and brilliance should get her home.
3 First Diamond (Bet Now: $4.20) looks suited back to 1000m on the fresh side. This filly is three weeks between runs since racing down the straight at Flemington over 1200m where she was outclassed behind Bold Arial. I think 1000m and back to this level looks ideal for her. Just want to see a market push for her before diving in if you like her in this race.
4 Metro Tramp (Bet Now: $4.40) is a nippy filly who should set the speed and give her all. Ran over 1100m at Gawler (Metro) last time where she attempted to lead all the way and tried hard but was no match for No Ties, running second, beaten comfortably but beat the rest comfortably. Bit more depth here, but 1000m back on the Parks track helps her. Outside winning chance if she gets things to suit.
Race 3. (15:06) Adelaide Cup March 11 Handicap (70) 1250m
Confident that 6 Vietti (Bet Now: $1.85) can make it three on the bounce for Tony McEvoy. Toyed with them to break the maiden two back at Gawler (Metro) before racing on the course proper two weeks ago where she was on speed again and her turn of foot came to the fore late in an impressive win. Bit harder here, but she’s in a winning frame of mind and I think she can continue her winning ways.
4 Everyday Lady (Bet Now: $2.90) is on the seven day turnaround for Will Clarken after racing over 1000m here last Saturday where she was back in trip and for mine just found them a tad sharp, but she was far from disgraced when a narrow second to Crown Fontein, a horse who I have time for. Up to 1250m, fitter, with upside, she certainly appeals to beat the fav. Just where she gets to from the gate is the unknown.
3 Miss Cuoco (Bet Now: $18.00) saves her best for Gawler but despite that I’m including her. Ran a few weeks back in an easier race at that track where she was off the pace and tried hard but was no match for the dominance of the in form Tiara Star. Has had the break between runs and can run well on the fresh side, so I think she’s a definite danger.
Race 4. (15:41) Schweppes Maiden Plate 1250m
6 La Vita (Bet Now: $3.40) is a daughter of Akeed Mofeed for Stuart Gower who is also knocking on the door to break the maiden status. Ran over 1100m at Gawler last time where she tried hard, was given every chance by Jordsjo, but just found Lakhani Rose far too good. Little query at 1250m I think but off last start, I think she’ll be okay and the form around her reads well.
7 Miss Brixton (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Tony McEvoy trained filly on debut. This girl has had two trials in readiness for her debut, the latest coming a couple of weeks back at Strathalbyn where she was near the speed and despite being under riding, she held on and beat So We Are, who bolted up on Wednesday, so the form reads well. Just want to see what the market does.
2 Lucky Break (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Team Jolly trained son of Akeed Mofeed on debut. This three year old gelding has only had one public trial in readiness for his first start, which came on the course proper here behind Stolen Away, who won impressively last Saturday, so the trial reads alright for this maiden, which doesn’t appear overly strong. Interesting to see what he does.
Race 5. (16:21) Medallion Homes Handicap (86) 1000m
Fresh/1000m looks a decent setup for 6 Musical Query (Bet Now: $3.00) to run well. Mick Minervini trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since December 22 when running a close up second over 1050m on the course proper behind Quiddick. Seems to be a mare who races best on the fresh side and is a winner on the Parks track. Down in the weights, she’ll do me here.
2 Barood (Bet Now: $3.40) is an absolute beauty for the Sue Murphy team who rarely runs a bad race. Ran over 1050m on the course proper a fortnight ago where he got the good run near the speed and the fav Zalmona got out of his comfort zone, which won the race for Barood. Creeping up in the weights now relative to the rivals, but he tries his heart out and has to be respected.
4 Stragun (Bet Now: $4.00) is a handy sprinter who runs a usual honest race each time he steps out. Just finds it hard to win on a consistent basis. He won well first up before going to Gawler (Metro) where he was hard in the market but was most disappointing when running fourth, beating one runner home. He’s better than that, so I have to give him another chance.
Race 6. (17:01) Table & Chair Co Handicap (70) 1950m
5 Lynch Mob (Bet Now: $2.20) looks ready to tackle Saturday grade for Tony McEvoy. He ran over 2000m last Wednesday on the course proper where he looked in a bit of trouble but Caserta got clear air on him and once he asked for the effort, he put them away relatively easy and was most impressive. If he can bring that run here, he’ll take some beating I’m sure.
1 Charossa (Bet Now: $2.60) is a beauty for Gordon Richards and he comes here in winning form after sitting on speed over the mile on the course proper a fortnight ago and just proving too good. Steps up in trip for the first time in his career but he has the right racing pattern for this track and should be in it for a long way. Last little bit may be the test.
2 Polar Vortex (Bet Now: $5.00) is a real model of consistency for Travis Doudle who got a well deserved win on the board over 1700m at Gawler last time where he was given a 12/10 steer from Toeroek where he saved ground wherever possible and it was clearly the ride that won the race. 1950m is the query with him, but he’s a tough bugger and gives his all each time.
Race 7. (17:41) John Senior Frankhuisen 83rd Birthday Handicap (64) 1550m
Siding with the Tony McEvoy trained 10 Light The Waves (Bet Now: $3.70). This mare trialled up on a couple of occasions prior to resuming at Gawler on December 28 where she just got a mile out of her ground but was warming to the task late when third to Zagato Star. She’s got that Diamond Tycoon feel where she gets back, runs on, catches the eye…problem is Diamond Tycoon didn’t win. Hoping this girl can turn the tide.
4 Cannot Be Serios (Bet Now: $4.00) looks to be going okay for Michael Hickmott and he strikes a winnable race here. Has finished runner up at his past two, the latest over the mile on the course proper when beaten narrowly by Charossa in a close go to the line. Depth here not as strong, draws well and I think the 1550m here is a better set up than the mile on the bigger track.
8 PIanissimo (Bet Now: $5.00) is a huge market/yard watch. Formerly with Richard Litt in Sydney but makes his SA debut for Grant Young and we see it so often that this stable can improve a busted horse from interstate. That is what this horse was when racing in NSW, running okay in town but not really threatening. 1550m first up for the new stable tells me he’s ready to go.
Race 8. (18:20) TAB Handicap (64) 1250m
3 Winning Partner (Bet Now: $1.55) should be winning this. Quality three year old gelding for the Tony McEvoy team who resumes and kicks off a potential Australian Guineas campaign. Had two runs as a gelding in the Spring, winning impressively on Bendigo Cup Day first up in a maiden before a good second in the Eureka Stockade at Ballarat. Recent jumpout was encouraging and does have class/quality on his side.
8 Zagato Star (Bet Now: $6.00) looks a threat. Ryan Balfour trains this mare, who is on the seven day back up after racing over 1200m on the course proper last Saturday where she sat back near last in a slowly run affair and couldn’t dash quick enough when the sprint went on but was still game in defeat when fourth to Kabini. This looks more to her liking and is one of the hardest to beat.
6 Valliano (Bet Now: $12.00) is on the seven day back up after racing over 1400m here last Saturday where he was a little unlucky early on in the straight but when he got clear, he didn’t really quicken at all and was most disappointing. Blinkers are off, back in trip, on the quick turnaround…it would be a shock if he won, but I think with the soft gate, he can fill a trifecta/first four spot.
