The best of the best that is Winx kicks off her crack at a third straight Cox Plate this Saturday in the Warwick Stakes (1400m) and the $250,000 Group ll contest highlights a brilliant nine event program. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) 2GB Silver Shadow Stakes 1200m
2 Formality (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained filly that is first up here after a very good Autumn campaign. Placed in the Blue Diamond before struggling to pick her feet up in the Slipper. Then was freshened and ran in the Percy Sykes where she beat all bar Shoals. Outstanding Cranbourne trial win last week over Tulip and Catchy. Looks one of the hardest to beat.
5 Alizee (Bet Now: $2.50) is a hyped filly for Godolphin and James Cummings who will probably start favourite here and due to the small field, she is an obvious threat. Fresh win at Warwick Farm was very good given she did look big in condition and had plenty of room for improvement. This will tell us if she is a contender or pretender.
3 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $2.60) is the big watch for mine. She is a very good filly for Bjorn Baker who is two for two and was immediately tipped out after bolting in over the 1000m here in June. Looks to have come back sensationally based on the two trials and she has a turn of foot, no matter what conditions.
Race 2. (12:40) Randwick Mayors Cup (89) 2400m
1 Sayed (💰$1.80 ODDS BOOST OFFER💰) is one of the form benchmark stayers in Sydney at the moment and despite the weight, he is clearly the one to beat. He was given a peach by McEvoy when racing over this track/distance a fortnight back and from the 600m onwards, it was painless. He spanked them. Not sure he’ll spank them again, but I think he’ll win again.
6 More Moet (Bet Now: $6.00) is the fresh blood and has really good winning form next to his name. Drew clear late to win impressively two back at Kembla Grange before going to Warwick Farm where he looked in bit of trouble getting clear air but once he found it he savaged the line and got the win. Harder here, but I think he can measure up.
4 Vassal (Bet Now: $8.00) is a costly conveyance for punters and Chris Waller but he does try hard and the small field will help. He just got too far back in the race won by Sayed here two weeks ago and was left out the back while those in front dashed. Beaten soundly, but the run was good. Multiples contender.
Race 3. (13:15) Harvey Norman TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1600m
Giving the nod to 1 Gid Up Strop (Bet Now: $13.00). Former talented Queenslander that is now with the Joseph/Jones team at Canberra and looks well placed here. He ran over the 1400m at the Sapphire Coast last time out and worked home with real purpose late to run fourth to the above average No Pushover. Randwick mile looks ideal and he should be hard fit.
14 Arrestar (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Matty Dunn trained three year old who does have some really good form next to his name so it’ll be no surprise to see him popular in betting. Given a peach by Jim Byrne to win last time out over the Doomben mile, beating home Lady Lark, who does have blacktype form. 1600m should be no issue here.
9 Kingia (Bet Now: $41.00) is a talented mare for the Peter Morgan yard who has been nominated for the Highway a couple of times but finally runs here off the back of an eye catching fifth to Willy White Socks at Narrandera, closing off well in a slowly run affair. That horse has since run well twice so the form stacks up okay and I think she’ll be suited up in trip.
Race 4. (13:50) Broccolini Handicap (90) 1400m
10 Francesco (Bet Now: $9.00) is a six year old trained by Mark Newnham who looks hard to beat after racing at this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought he was really good in defeat. Race shape didn’t appear to be ideal and he couldn’t really get into his work like he wants to but he was still game behind King Darci. Confident he can go close here.
2 Comin’ Through (Bet Now: $3.60) is the clear watch. Serious Group l horse resuming for Chris Waller after a mixed Autumn prep. They prepped him as if he was a Derby horse but I think we now know he is a pure miler and that is where his best efforts have come. Been great in two trials and he does have the clear class/quality factor over these.
7 More To Gain (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented galloper for the Turner/Poletti stable that was well backed when resuming over 1350m at Rosehill three weeks back and he loomed large to win but his condition just gave out late when fourth to Most Exalted. Would love him at a mile on a wet track, but 1400m here on a firm surface should be okay.
Race 5. (14:25) Alpha Flight Services Up And Coming Stakes 1300m
Siding with 6 Calculated. (Bet Now: $2.70). Classy youngster for Chris Waller who hasn’t raced for five weeks since running over 1400m at Rosehill where it looked no betting 300m but he couldn’t put away Siege Of Quebec who was too tough. That horse ran well in the Rosebud last week so that form stands up big time for this, an inferior race.
1 Trapeze Artist (Bet Now: $7.00) is a smart Snitzel colt that resumes for the Gerald Ryan yard. This boy wasn’t really an A-Grader in the Autumn, though he did win the Black Opal impressively. Ran well in the Slipper before a brave third in the Sires. He has looked very good in two trials leading in and did bolt up on debut.
7 Dracarys (Bet Now: $9.00) is a smart customer for Team Snowden who resumed here a few weeks back where he was an alarming drifter in betting, suggesting he might need the run, yet he looked to travel sweetly in the run and cruised to the front, only to be nabbed late by the race fit stablemate Assimilate. Should come on from that and rates highly, and he did trial last week.
Race 6. (15:00) Bob Ingham Warwick Stakes 1400m
7 Winx (💰 $2.00 ODDS BOOST OFFER 💰)…what more needs to be said? The best in the world, looks to have come back well. She hasn’t improved I’d say from last campaign. If anything, I’d say maybe slightly inferior to what she produced. The first trial, yep, outstanding. The second trial she was niggled at the entire straight and eventually won it. The trial win was just fair…but fair for Winx is brilliant for others. Sit back and enjoy the continuation of history.
8 Foxplay (Bet Now: $18.00) probably runs third to Winx and Egg Tart as the best mare Australian racing has to offer. She is a star who confirmed it during the Championships with a brilliant finish to claim the Coolmore Legacy against the older horses, a real feather in the cap for any younger galloper. She’s looked the part in two trials and flies fresh.
I really liked the resumption of 6 Harper’s Choice (Bet Now: $26.00) in the Missile. 1200m was clearly short of his best and looked big in condition. Was never going to threaten those in front, but he did close off nicely. He has the run under the belt, he loves Randwick, up to 1400m ideal…I think he is a great place bet.
Race 7. (15:40) Sydney Markets Toy Show Quality 1300m
5 Rocket Commander (Bet Now: $12.00) had her first run for the Hayes/Dabernig team at Caulfield three weeks back over 1200m and I thought her effort was very good in defeat. It turned into a real sit/sprint, which this horse doesn’t like, but I loved her final 100m and through the line. Proven blacktype performer in Sydney, she can threaten here for sure.
The way the race shapes, I think 4 Sweet Redemption (Bet Now: $5.50) comes right into play. Waterhouse/Bott trained mare first up since racing liked a tired horse in the Dark Jewel behind Daysee Doom. Wouldn’t say she has trialled like a star, but she looks the leader and will give a great sight for sure.
7 Imposing Lass (Bet Now: $4.60) is a quality mare that resumes for the Bjorn Baker yard. She has been given a really good prep since the Summer where she ended the campaign with a Belle Of The Turf win at Gosford. I’m sure whatever she does here she will improve on, but she has a touch of quality and her recent trial was quite encouraging.
Race 8. (16:20) Suttons Show County Quality 1200m
4 Spectroscope (Bet Now: $4.80) is the pick for me here in a cracking race. High quality import for Godolphin and James Cummings having his second run down under. His four runs in the Autumn was highlighted by a superb win in the Doncaster Prelude. His trials leading in have been great and he does seem to be a fresh horse. The only negative is that his overall form from the Autumn doesn’t read great.
7 Omei Sword, (Bet Now: $2.20) on potential, is one of the best in Australia but she has just been plagued by injury/bad luck throughout her career. Had the two runs in the Autumn. First up run in the Surround was unbelievable then didn’t pull up 100% after the Coolmore. Two trials, especially the one on Monday, was first class. Clear and obvious threat.
3 Burning Passion (Bet Now: $10.00) was a ripping horse for the Cummings team, but is now with Mark Newnham. He came of age last time in, ending his stint with Cummings with a win in the Healy before a fifth to Slightly Sweet in the Winter Challenge. Looked to trial up well last week and he proved last time in he doesn’t need a wet track to perform.
Race 9. (17:00) Primo Handicap (84) 1000m
10 Clipper (Bet Now: $3.90) on top for me. Quality mare for Matty Dale who is four weeks between runs since racing over 1100m here where she tried very hard on speed but couldn’t quite reel in the nippy Memes. Back to 1000m off a slight freshen up looks perfect, thin race and the claim for Adkins is a big tick.
Looks to be really good speed in the race and that should clearly suit the Team Snowden mare 6 Gibraltar Girl (Bet Now: $4.20). She did a really good job fresh last prep in the PJ Bell behind Diddums before dropping back to benchmark grade and beating Tessera before having no luck during the Scone Carnival. Trials have been good and she will be charging late if they go hard, which they should.
5 Pro Consul (Bet Now: $17.00) is a veteran that has been quite good this time in for the Greg Hickman. He comes through the Sangiovese race here a fortnight back where he did a really good job from the back in a race dominated by those nearer the tempo when a close up sixth, beaten just over a length. If he gets luck from the gate, he’s in this.
