One of the real sleeping giants of Victorian racing is the stand alone program at Bendigo and once again the card is a beauty, highlighted by the $150,000 Listed Golden Mile (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:25) : All Seasons Hotel Handicap (90) 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Henwood (Best Odds: $4.80) hasn’t really set the world on fire in two runs back from a break, the latest over 1400m at Flemington at Listed Level behind Red Bomber. He is getting fitter now and does look the leader. If he finds his best form, he’d go awfully close here.
Big Danger: 4 Rock Forthe Ladies (Best Odds: $3.50) resumed over 1200m at Ladbrokes Park and let down strongly to get the job done nicely and impressively. Suited up in trip, fitter, stable rider aboard and just has enormous upside.
Roughie: 3 Royal Rapture (Best Odds: $8.00) resumed over 1200m at Morphettville a couple of weeks back and closed off alright late in the piece behind another Victorian galloper, Charles In Charge. He has a really good second up record and can be a winning threat here.
Race Two (13:00) : TROA Handicap (78) 1300m:
Back Me: 11 Azeema (Best Odds: $2.70) is a handy type that resumes for Mick Price. This daughter of Fastnet Rock hasn’t raced since June when racing over the mile at Flemington in a race where the form has really held up. Trial and jump outs have been very encouraging and is only carrying 52.5kg.
Big Danger: 12 Fidel Astro (Best Odds: $9.00) has been given a month freshen up since racing over 1400m at Racing.com Park when a close up second to in form type Anare. Has plenty of upside and gets the services of Nick Hall, and his riding pattern will suit this horse.
Roughie: 5 Stylish Miss (Best Odds: $13.00) resumed over 1200m at Ladbrokes Park and sat wide most of the way yet kept finding the line behind Rock Forthe Ladies, who is a leading chance in the first, so by racetime here, you’ll know how strong the form reference is.
Race Three (13:35) : Mittys Sprint (70) 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Mystic Moon (Best Odds: $6.00) is two from two this time in for Peter Moody. She got the job done well first up at Mornington before racing over 1100m here and kicked on very strongly to win narrowly but impressively. Back to 1000m. Gets 2kg off from that last start win, draws well and Meech remains, so the filly ticks plenty of boxes.
Big Danger: 3 Ragazzao Del Corsa (Best Odds: $4.00) is clearly the best horse in the race. This horse was taking ground off Japonisme in the Coolmore Stud before running well in several subsequent outings. Recent Flemington jump out was very good and despite a wide gate, he is a definite leading contender.
Roughie: 8 The Big Dance (Best Odds: $9.00) won at this meeting last year, winning the Gold Rush. She hasn’t really fired a shot since then, but she does return to the scene of the crime, draws well and is so well weighted after the claim for Ben Thompson.
Race Four (14:10) : AgVantage VOBIS Gold Rush 1000m:
Back Me: 1 Valliano (Best Odds: $4.60) was an impressive first up winner of the Inglis Premier (1200m) before going to the Blue Diamond (1200m) where he was simply outclassed behind Extreme Choice. This looks his right level and it’s interesting to note that the blinkers go on for the first time, so that might sharpen him up.
Big Danger: 6 Creativity (Best Odds: $4.40) resumed down the straight at Flemington and stuck to the task very gamely behind Selenia, and the form out of that race was franked last Saturday. Mallyon remains on, she draws well and this race in previous years has been dominated by those up on speed.
Roughie: 8 Launched (Best Odds: $31.00) debuted here on Feb 23 and wasn’t too bad in a hot maiden when fifth to Meridian Star before going to Ballarat when running third to Heptagon. Hard fit now and draws well in what looks to be a really thin two year old race.
Race Five (14:50) : Jayco Better Loosen Up Trophy 2400m:
Back Me: 9 Waxing (Best Odds: $8.50) ran over 2500m at the Valley last time out where he had to make a long searching run from about the 900m mark and loomed to win on the turn but just died on the run and was nailed right on the peg by Last Wish, who was ok in the Adelaide Cup on Monday. Gate one here and does drop 5kg in weight from that outing.
Big Danger: 6 Lucky Lucky Lucky (Best Odds: $8.50) ran in the Lord Reims (2600m) at Morphettville last time out and was alright but was simply no match for Signoff, who would have bolted up in the Adelaide Cup had he not been scratched. This horse hasn’t won for some time, but is close and this isn’t the strongest race.
Roughie: 2 Black Jag (Best Odds: $13.00) comes through the Roy Higgins (2600m) where he was an absolute pest on speed as he usually is and he fought on so well to run third to Real Love, who did run well in the Adelaide Cup. That is the stronger form reference, looks the leader and should take some beating.
Race Six (15:30) : Catanach’s Jewellers Gold Bracelet 1400m:
Back Me: Really keen here on 2 Hijack Hussy (Best Odds: $4.00). This former Queensland mare had her first run for Darren Weir down the straight at Flemington a couple of weeks back and closed off hard late to run third to Miss Seton Sands. Given her record, she is very well weighted. The only negative is that Rawiller jumps off to ride the stablemate Atlantis Dream.
Big Danger: 7 Our Harmony (Best Odds: $10.00) has been given a month freshen up since running a game second at Moonee Valley behind Celeritas. Trialled last week at Cranbourne and looked to do it very nicely. Gets gate one and Regan Bayliss jumps back aboard.
Roughie: 3 Nadeem Lass (Best Odds: $26.00) is here to defend her title after winning this race last year. Admittedly she isn’t going as well leading in here as she was last year, but admittedly, she contested easier races last year. Not sure she can win, but she is a must for exotics.
Race Seven (16:10) : Bet365 Golden Mile 1600m:
Back Me: 7 General Groove (Best Odds: $3.70) ran last time at Flemington where he ran a luckless fifth to Red Bomber in a bunched finish. Normally that’s a worry, but all horses in that bunch ran well. He is clearly knocking on the door to win and he strikes a winnable race here.
Big Danger: 1 Big Memory (Best Odds: $5.00) ran in that Red Bomber race and though he finished eighth of ten, the effort was very good considering he was first up. He is the clear class runner and will take some beating with some luck from the tricky gate.
Roughie: 5 Bondeiger (Best Odds: $17.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for Danny O’Brien. His best is over further, but recent jump outs have been quite encouraging and I like the fact he resumes at 1600m, an indication perhaps he might be forward enough to run well fresh.
Race Eight (16:50) : Rich Enuff at Woodside Park Bendigo Guineas 1400m:
Back Me: 1 Odyssey Moon (Best Odds: $7.00) resumed in the Zeditave three weeks back where he was wide no cover most of the way and stuck on very well when a close up fourth to Santa Ana Lane. Enormous upside with this Group l performer and given his record, he does look so well suited and placed at the weights.
Roughie: 12 Silent Sedition (Best Odds: $3.70) is a talented filly that got her maiden kill out of the way first up under the lights at Cranbourne where she showed tactical speed, which is something she didn’t show at all in the Spring. Suited up in trip and has plenty of upside.
Big Danger: 2 Tivaci (Best Odds: $5.50) comes through the Australian Guineas where Nick Hall took off on him a fair way out and those tactics just didn’t work at all when finishing down the track behind Palentino. This looks more his level and Steve Arnold does ride Mike Moroney runners very well.
Race Nine (17:30) : Italktravel Trophy (84) 1400m:
Back Me: 4 Society Man (Best Odds: $13.00) resumed at Moonee Valley over this trip a tick over a month back and duly saluted after being kept very safe in betting. He was once upon a time known as a 1000m horse who wouldn’t finish, but Daniel Bowman has done a fantastic job with this horse and he looks well placed to continue winning.
Big Danger: 8 Sardaaj (Best Odds: $4.80) creates plenty of interest. This former kiwi had a prep for Team Hawkes in the Spring and performed well without luck. Now with the Hayes/Dabernig yard and though she hasn’t caught my attention at the jump outs, she has class and Zahra is on.
Roughie: 1 Running Bull (Best Odds: $11.00) is another interesting runner. This one resumes for Peter Moody off the back of a down the track effort in the China Bowl on Ararat Cup Day in November. Jump outs have been encouraging, he draws well…a chance perhaps? Watch for market moves.
