Group l racing continues at Doomben this Saturday where it is Doomben Cup Day, with the 2000m feature highlighting a bumper nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:15) Pullman Brisbane Airport Hotel Handicap (85) 1200m
12 Taillevent (Bet Now: $14.00) will do me each way in the opener, a race which looks thin on paper. He ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and worked home well from the back I thought behind Tyzone in what was a real on pace dominated affair. Does run well here and should get a lovely run off the pace.
1 Sony Legend (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Brian Smith trained gelding who should appreciate returning to 1200m at Doomben after racing over this trip at the Gold Coast a fortnight back where he worked home okay I thought when fourth to the heavily backed Tyzone. Good record at the track/distance and it really is the sort of race he could fire in.
8 Beat Street (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Stuart Kendrick trained gelding who is racing in fine form and deserves a crack in town. He ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last time out where he sat back and finished off strongly to nab the in form Gracida. Tends to save his best for the the home track at Caloundra, but he has run well here before.
Race 2. (11:50) LED Superscreens Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
The barrier just makes me lean the way of 7 Savwell (Bet Now: $4.00). Four weeks beteen runs for the Vandyke camp since producing a brilliant finishing burst from the back to get the job done at this track/distance on the bog. He does seem to race best on the fresh side and the Lloyd/Vandyke combo has been very good recently.
11 Divine Unicorn (Bet Now: $3.40) is a very good horse for the Matty Dunn team. Trialled up well prior to resuming over 1400m at the Gold Coast where he dug in really deep when challenged by Oink and got the win. Looks like he’ll measure up for sure.
1 Sergeant Blast (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very interesting runner. Former kiwi that makes his Australian debut for the Brian Smith team. He showed really good promise when racing in New Zealand, mainly at this distance against some handy types back home. Resumes with no trials, but he has a good fresh record and always respect the stable.
Race 3. (12:25) Canadian Club Handicap (75) 1350m
Happy to stick with 10 Zamex (Bet Now: $18.00). Was on him a fortnight ago at the Gold Coast and I reckon he should be forgiven for his failure. He was three and four wide throughout before being pushed wider on the turn. He was there with 150m to go but just ran out of puff late. I think if the breaks go his way here, he’ll run well.
2 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $5.25) looks an each way play for mine in a tricky race. I reckon she’ll be better suited over the 1350m-1600m, but it was hard to ignore her resumption at Ipswich last Monday where she got a mile back over the 1000m but finished off with real purpose to run second to Wudang Blade, clocking near sub 32 for her final 600m. That sort of speed here would see her go awfully close.
3 Chavish (Bet Now: $19.00) looks to have really turned the corner since joining the Tony Gollan camp. Gave them a spanking two back at Ipswich before going to Beaudesert on Anzac Day where he lapped up the soft track under Jim Byrne and bolted in. He is at his best when there is give in the track, but even on top of the ground, he has to be included given the purple patch he is in.
Race 4. (13:00) Bill Carter Stakes 1200m
6 Eawase (Bet Now: $4.85) looks the way to go here. Team Snowden trains this filly, who resumed on Anzac Day at Randwick and got the job done quite impressively and though the margin was narrow, the win was very good, beating Galina, who had little to no luck last week at Warwick Farm. Stable knows which horses to take on the road and they place them superbly.
2 Shamurt (Bet Now: $4.80) is a ripper for Tony Gollan. I reckon 1200m sees her right out but against her own age/sex, I think she’s well placed to go close. Ran in the Dalrello three weeks back and just had to settle for second to Mishani Hustler. Hard fit, in form and does try hard so you’d like to think she runs well.
5 Clockwise (Bet Now: $8.00) comes through the Dalrello behind Mishani Hustler. She had the suck run behind the speed and tried hard but just took a fraction too long to wind up when a close up third. I reckon she’d love returning to a big track like the Sunny Coast, but that aside, I think she should more than hold her own.
Race 5. (13:40) Chief De Beers 1050m
I think 11 Spurcraft (Bet Now: $6.00) deserves a crack at this kind of race. He was off the map in betting a fortnight back over 1100m at Ipswich, with some betting agencies opening him at $4. He started $1.60 and won like Phar Lap, winning with absolute ease and smashing the clock. Hardest test to date, but the big thing for him is sustained speed and the fact he can burn the candle at both ends.
5 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $14.00) will love sitting off this hot speed. He did that when resuming over 1000m at the Sunny Coast and once Steph Lacy got him some clear, the race was over and his class got him home. That was on a heavy track and he is a horse who prefers cut in the ground, despite being okay on top of it. Still, hard to ignore the resumption.
If they go silly, look for 12 Colosimo (Bet Now: $27.00) to be savaging the line. Had a stint with Chris Waller where she was quite good, but is now back with O’Dea. Comes here with one trial under the belt but it looked to be a really good one when third to Ignite The Light on Tuesday at Deagon. She’s the knockout.
Race 6. (14:20) JRA Plate 1200m
He’d be better suited on a bigger track but I think 6 Scallopini (Bet Now: $5.50) is the one to look out for if they go hard. He is a very good three year old for Steve O’Dea who could easily measure up to better company. Resumes with just the one trial under the belt but it was a ripper to eye behind Cooroi Chase, who won last week at the Gold Coast. He’ll get back and launch late.
1 Chauffeur (Bet Now: $3.60) is a talented three year old who is resuming for Brad Widdup. This bloke hasn’t raced since being hard in the market in the Roman Consul and running a shocker behind Viridine. Been given a couple of trials to prepare for his return, the latest behind subsequent Ortensia winner To Excess. Reads well for this.
11 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $9.00) is a very good filly for Toby Edmonds that resumes. This girl got some blacktype last prep with a placing in the Mode Plate behind the abide average Pretty Fast. Looks to have trialled well leading up to her return and overall, this race isn’t strong so she doesn’t have to be fully wound up to run well.
Race 7. (15:00) BRC Sprint 1350m
3 Mr Sneaky (Bet Now: $7.50) looks a great each way bet for mine. First run in QLD in the Ascot Handicap on a bog and for the most part, he looked to be bolting but when the big effort was asked, his wheels started spinning. Firmer footing, 1350m, good tempo, class, well weighted…I’m really warming to him.
1 Ulmann (Bet Now: $11.00) is the big improver. He resumed in the Wangoom during the Warrnambool Carnival and really had no chance in the run given where he was but he worked to the line with real purpose and was a clear eye catcher behind stablemate Handsome Thief. Ran well in this race last year and looks on target.
Spoke to Ben Currie on Tuesday and he was really bullish about the chances of 8 Cantbuybetter (Bet Now: $21.00), who is first up. He told me the horse has been set for the race and has had three jump outs in readiness for this, so it’s clearly been set up for him to win this and gain a start in the Stradbroke. Good fresh horse and 1350m fresh is a good lead he’s wound up. I’ll be backing him along with Mr Sneaky.
Race 8. (15:40) Doomben Cup 2000m
I think this race evolves around what frame of mind 3 Ambitious (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS) is in, because if he’s right, he’s the best horse in the race by a mile. Outstanding effort behind Almandin in the Tancred before a total forget run when outclassed behind Winx in the Queen Elizabeth. Has been stabled in Brisbane for the Carnival and on class, he’s the one.
I don’t think the Hollindale is the right form reference, but on a dry track, the horse from that race looks to be 7 Satono Rosen (Bet Now: $7.00 FAT ODDS). He was only second up there and had no luck at all when appearing to have plenty to offer in the straight, only getting clear the final few strides. He’ll have no trouble with 2000m and brings class.
10 Tradesman (Bet Now: $18.00 FAT ODDS) is the very interesting one. Darren Weir trains this former WA galloper, who absolutely bolted up over 1700m during the Warrnambool Carnival when sitting wide no cover throughout but proving far too good for his rivals. He will eat up the 2000m and he brings fresh legs and upside.
Race 9. (16:20) Bright Shadow Quality 1200m
Hard to get away from 2 Anatola (Bet Now: $2.00). Mark Newnham has this mare absolutely flying at the moment. Smashed the 1200m track record when winning first up before going to the Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast where she did a bit of work on speed but when Fradd asked for the effort, she exploded and won impressively. Just hast to tick the Doomben box to win again I think.
11 River Racer (Bet Now: $7.00) gave them a spanking here two back before contesting the Silk Stocking where she was up near the speed again and battled away pretty well in defeat behind Anatola, though well held. I reckon riding her cold and having last say will be her best chance of winning because riding her close to the tempo won’t see her beat Anatola.
4 Swampland (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting one. Henry Dwyer trains this mare, who has a very good overall record and is probably just a length or two off the best mares races in Australia. Has a pretty good first up record and her Cranbourne trial was sharp to the eye. Stable should always be respected when on the road.
