A strong eight race program has been set down for Sandown Lakeside on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbroke It! Plate 1200m
Bit of guessing here with a few first starters but I did like a recent jumpout from 4 Dickensian (Bet Now: $3.90) and Peter Moody, IMO, sits behind Maher/Eustace as the best stable in Victoria, by some margin. This gelding won a recent Pakenham jumpout and the big tick for him was that when he was asked for an effort, he responded with purpose. 1200m is short of ideal based on breeding, but can’t ignore the stable.
7 Award Me (Bet Now: $4.80) is a daughter of Shamus Award on debut for Danny O’Brien. She’s had three jumpouts to get ready for start one, so she’s had a decent enough grounding. Most recent was at Werribee last Monday and she looked to move quite well. Jamie Kah on doesn’t hurt either.
5 Forged (Bet Now: $7.50) looks the pick of the raced brigade, which looks a bit on the thin side I feel hence why I am leaning towards the unraced. This guy ran over 1300m here last time where he loomed to win but couldn’t quite sustain the run and had to settle for third. Back to 1200m I like and should be strong at the end.
Race 2. (16:15) Ladbrokes Switch Handicap (64) 1300m
Waddle your finger and hope for the best. Very even race. I do think though that the one with the most upside/progression is 6 Miss Middle Park (Bet Now: $2.90). She looks a very dumb filly who doesn’t know what she’s doing but has good natural talent. Has hit a flat spot on the turn in both career outings but has picked up strongly late, most notably last start when winning her maiden at Cranbourne. Think she can measure up here.
Fitter and back up to 1300m I do like for 4 Cherrypick (Bet Now: $4.00). Impressive winner over this trip two back before having a few weeks off and coming back to 1200m at The Valley when good late from off the speed. Should park in a lovely spot from the gate and is hard to beat.
5 Dueastar (Bet Now: $12.00) can improve back a bit in depth IMO. Resumed at Caulfield where she was a tad on the plain side I thought but not beaten far behind Jezoulenko. Has good form from earlier in her career and if she was able to produce anything like it here, she would just about win.
Race 3. (16:50) Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Handicap (64) 2400m
I was a bit surprised when double figures was first put up for 3 Look Sharpish (Bet Now: $9.00). She is on the seven day back up after racing last Wednesday at Caulfield and she was stiff not to finish much closer. Lost momentum at a key stage before eventually getting clear and finding the line quite well behind My Delight. I think 2400m will be fine, she’s got more upside than most and you’re getting a decent price to have a look at her.
9 Tatalina (Bet Now: $11.00) is a very one paced mare who I think would be an ideal jumper in the future given she will stay all day. That was the case last time out over 2400m on the Hillside course when back and making up good ground. I think this is a very thin race so she’s in the mix despite saying two back she got life.
Good test here for 2 Fiji (Bet Now: $14.00) but he is a horse will have no issue with 2400m and comes here in winning form after bolting up over 2150m at Terang last time. Admittedly the track pattern was in his corner, but even allowing for that, he was still dominant, with big gaps spreading the field on the line. 2400m is fine, he’s in form…something that can’t be said about most of these.
Race 4. (17:25) Ladbrokes Blended Bets Handicap (64) 1600m
1 Green Belt (Bet Now: $1.80) looks the good thing on the program. The form behind him does look suspect, but sometimes you just have to trust what you saw and what I saw at Cranbourne was a horse destined for blacktype. He moves like a good horse, he was trucking in the run like a good horse and when Kah asked him to go, he went. Anything above $2 is overs.
6 Matron Bullwinkel (Bet Now: $14.00) won at the same Cranbourne meeting mentioned above, his maiden win coming over 1400m rather than the mile that Green Belt ran. Her win had merit. She took a while to get into her work but knuckled down strongly late to win in the last hope, though he was somewhat flattered by the leader stopping. She’s in the right camp and bred to eat up the mile and beyond.
3 Rock Wave (Bet Now: $14.00) looks a progressive animal for Peter Moody. He didn’t beat a great deal at Mornington last time to break the maiden tag but he led throughout and was strong to the line and through it in winning. Not sure he’s god enough to beat Green Belt, but one for exotics.
Race 5. (18:00) Tile Importer Handicap (64) 1200m
6 Inner Spirit (Bet Now: $3.50) for me. Maher/Eustace trained gelding that produced a big effort to win the maiden at Mornington last time. Sat three/four wide for the trip and despite that hard run, he was trucking and once Allen asked for the effort, he found another gear and was impressive in winning. Progressive, heading in the right direction and maps well from the draw.
Beware the unbeaten horse so beware 3 Jucconi (Bet Now: $4.80). Resumes for Team McEvoy after winning 2/2 to start his career back in the Winter, both wins on Synthetic tracks. Good jumpout win at Terang to get ready but he did look to want to lay in a bit under pressure and no disrespect to Madison Lloyd, but I just query whether she has the strength to straighten him up whilst trying to get the best out of him.
5 Jungle Jim (Bet Now: $7.50) will put himself on speed and try hard. Did that first up at Moe and was there to be run down but showed good ticker late to fend them off and win. Clearly a harder assignment, but has the right racing pattern and this track can suit on speed on occasion.
Race 6. (18:30) Stud & Stable Staff Awards Handicap (64) 2100m
I like the look of 2 Gate Crash (Bet Now: $2.20) for Patrick Payne. Both runs this time in have come at Sandown Hillside, a narrow second first up before an impressive win over 1800m where he got better as the race went on. Off that effort, he should eat up 2100m and has upside, unlike most engaged.
3 Miss Tenthousand (Bet Now: $12.00) is a beauty for the Maher/Eustace camp. Very honest that is around the mark more often than not. There to be run down at Yarra Valley last time out but she found under pressure and safely held her rivals at bay. Good test here, but think she measures up.
4 Abreed (Bet Now: $9.50) has found winning form…can he go on with it now? He was smashed in betting at Werribee last time out and even though the race was set up for him, he still had to take advantage and that he did. That should toughen him up for this 2100m assignment and how often do we see these bludgers finally win and then win again straight after.
Race 7. (19:00) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Handicap (64) 1400m
3 Vasmee (Bet Now: $5.50) is my each way value for the meeting. Not sure he has the ability of a couple of others here, but he’s a horse racing so well, can sit on speed and keep going. That was the case at Werribee last time. You were waiting for something to run him down but he kept going and spanked them. He’ll run you a bold race.
Staying at 1400m is the only knock with 6 Logan Street Lion (Bet Now: $2.60). Resumed at this trip and I think it’s not difficult to say that with clear air, he wins instead of a close up fourth behind So Risque. If this was 1600m, he’d be a good thing. Just staying at 1400m is the only concern.
4 Unfair Dismissal (Bet Now: $27.00) is a very genuine horse for David Noonan. Has placed in both runs this time in, the latest coming over 1300m on the Hillside track where he didn’t stop chasing in a good effort behind Our Modena. Up to 1400m, hard fit, he’s certainly in the mix.
Race 8. (19:30) Ladbrokes Fast Withdrawals Handicap (70) 1600m
5 Vardani (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing like he will eat up the mile here and with that in mind, he is on top here. He savaged the line when bolting up two back at Warrnambool where he was smashed in the market. Then went to Flemington on New Years Day and was very good late from near last in the run. Hopefully can sit a pair or two closer in the run.
Market will be fascinating with 3 Aesop (Bet Now: $14.00), who makes his Australian debut for Phillip Stokes. This horse raced in Ireland and didn’t do a bad job there, but it was at 2000m+. In saying that, I like them resuming at the mile, telling me that this first up run isn’t just a prep run, and two jumpouts, plus a trial, tell me he’s here to run well.
8 Jesta Dreama (Bet Now: $17.00) is a knockout hope. Ran over the mile at Flemington last time out where he was dragged back to near last from the wide gate and while he was never a threat, he did make up good ground when fourth to Brasada. If he can use the inside gate to advantage, he’s in with a shout.
