The course proper at Morphettville is where Adelaide racing takes place this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out twelve metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out nine metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:36) Trader Plate 1050m
It’s just a matter of deciding which of Tony McEvoys will take this out. Slight leaning towards the O’Reilly colt 5 Raahee (Bet Now: $1.75). This bloke has trialled three times in readiness for his first day at the races, winning his last two, the latest coming last week at Gawler when beating Rebel Romance. Not much between them, but I’ll side with this one.
6 Burn Off (Bet Now: $7.50) is the watch horse here. Daughter of Krupt on debut for the Shane Cahill team who finished fourth to Secret Blaze in a trial on the same morning as what Raahee ran during, and went quicker time. Draws to get a lovely run just off the pace and she does look the clear overs for mine.
3 City Beats (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of Ilovethiscity on debut for the Gordon Richards team. This chestnut has trialled twice, starting off on the Parks track with a placing before going to Gawler where he ran fourth to Raahee in what does look to be a strong trial and one to use as a form reference. I think he can measure up here.
Race 2. (13:11) Wolf Blass Wines Handicap (82) 2500m
2 Duquessa (Bet Now: $3.70) is a mare that is just absolutely low flying at the moment for the Dodson team. Given a peach of a ride by Eran Boyd on Cup Day here and once she got into the clear, it was game over, and she finished best. Faces a similar line up here, not badly treated at the weights, and she’s the most reliable.
4 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $4.40) has the form on the board but he has an awful racing pattern and does come off a very average run on Cup Day over 2800m at Flemington, but his chances were done when Regal Monarch crashed to the turf. He has a booming finish on him and if he gets a reasonable tempo in front, he’ll launch.
5 Robocop (Bet Now: $14.00) is a tough, tough campaigner Shane Oxlade who comes through the Duquessa race here on Cup Day where his effort on speed was very good I thought. Copped sustained pressure on speed, fought hard, kicked strongly but was no match late for the turn of foot produced by Duquessa. Not sure he turns the tables, but should run well all the same.
Race 3. (13:46) Gary Radford Family Handicap (64) 1050m
Keen here on 7 Tan Tat Flame (Bet Now: $4.50), especially with the give in the track. Bob of the head went her way to win the maiden here on Cup Day but I thought she did a pretty good job considering she was six-seven weeks between runs. Mum was an absolute swimmer, so the give in the track is no issue and should only improve fitness wise.
2 White Kaps (Bet Now: $5.50) landed some bets at good odds when resuming in a field of five on the Parks track a fortnight back. Sat back in the small field before Jordsjo eased into clear air and he took a little while to wind up but he finished best and got the win. Horror record on the course proper but each of those races carried far more depth than this race.
3 Iron Lotus (Bet Now: $5.00) is such an interesting runner here. Former NT galloper making her SA debut for the Ryan Balfour team. Progressive filly who has simply been too good in Alice Springs, so connections have sent her to Adelaide to see just how good she is. She does find plenty of these first up, while she is fit with speed, so she has a few things going for her.
Race 4. (14:21) C A Haigh Memorial Trophy (90) 1200m
1 Chamois Road (Bet Now: $2.60) looks the obvious and safe play. Patrick Payne trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance where he sat on speed and as he always does, kicks hard, but was no match late for Lord Aspen, who was completely luckless during Cup Week, so the form reads well and this field isn’t as strong.
4 Desert Lashes (Bet Now: $2.10) is a beauty and she will take some beating here back in grade. She ran down the straight at Flemington on Derby Day and ran well nearer the inside, which is never the place to be in straight races when they are in the middle of the track. Returns home now, maps well and is hard fit.
5 Pretty Punk (Bet Now: $26.00) is the big watch here. Smart staying mare that resumes for the macdonald/Gluyas team. This girl had a pretty solid Winter prep, including runs in the Oaks and Fillies Classic, before taking on the older horses and winning a race before ending the prep like a tired horse. Like the way she trialled at Gawler and is one to look out for.
Race 5. (14:56) Penna Michael Chartered Accountants Handicap (82) 1800m
2 Hussybay (Bet Now: $1.85) is a horse low flying at the moment for the Mick Huxtable team and should go close here. Thought he toughed it out superbly to win over the 1950m on the Parks track last time out when he looked gone 100m out, but he found plenty late when challenged again and surged hard to win. Back to 1800m and onto the course proper, gee he looks hard to beat.
3 Wasabi Bob (Bet Now: $3.40) is on the seven day back up for the Macdonald/Gluyas team after scoring an impressive win over the 1550m on the Parks track last Saturday. Was a fortnight between runs and back in trip but he toughed it out and the verdict went his way. Failed in his lone run at the trip, but he’s a much better horse now.
1 Little Akie (Bet Now: $9.50) is a beauty for the Brian Mueller team who comes through the Hussybay race on the Parks track a fortnight back. Ridden a touch upside down in the field of five, sitting on speed. Was under pressure on the turn and looked gone but he kept finding under Wong and only went down a half length in running fourth. He’ll also appreciate the step back to 1800m.
Race 6. (15:36) Legacy In South Australia & Broken HillHandicap (70) 1200m
8 Hussy’s Glow (Bet Now: $5.00) clearly on top. Patrick Payne trained mare resuming after a somewhat frustrating prep last time in, even though she did score an impressive win on the Parks track. Loved the way she looked in a trial on Tuesday and it’s always a good sign when a horse trials and races in the same week. Soft track won’t be an excuse.
5 Street Embrace (Bet Now: $3.90) attempted to lead all the way over the 1250m on the Parks track a few weeks back under regular rider Dylan Caboche and the horse, as he does, gave a good kick on the bend but he just didn’t quite see it out when third to Miss Identified. Maps well once again and should take some beating for mine.
4 Freedom Road (Bet Now: $11.00) is a mare in ripping form, but is five weeks between runs, which is the niggle in the back of my head. Loved the way she knuckled down to win at on the Parks track last time, even though the time was slower to what Set To Sparkle has run over the same trip. Few queries, but hard to knock winning form.
Race 7. (16:11) Zonte's Z Force Handicap (70) 1200m
7 Sudden Wealth (Bet Now: $6.00) is a really good mare that resumes for the Will Clarken stable. This mare was one of the finds of the Autumn/Winter, continually racing well right throughout before ending the prep like a tired horse behind Miss Jane. Trialled up well recently to tune her up and she can pull out a run fresh.
5 Trogir (Bet Now: $3.40) is an above average conveyance for the Stokes team who spanked them at this track/distance on Cup Day and landed some big bets. Controlled things beautifully in front before dashing at the right time and careering away. Not sure he can beat Embecee Lil but he is a definite threat.
6 Another Bender (Bet Now: $17.00) looks really good overs for mine here. Dwayne Reid trained mare who resumed with a non tab win on Cup Day at Wangaratta, but she spanked her rivals and ran really good time. Has a really good second up record and has run well in Melbourne before, so the talent/ability is definitely there.
Race 8. (16:51) Consolidated Plant & Quarries Handicap (64) 1100m
14 Don’t Cry Wolf (Bet Now: $4.80) is a lightly raced mare for the Gary Kennewell stable who was crunched in betting when resuming at Gawler and despite taking a little while to get there, she did attack the line with purpose and ran through it the same. Has always shown city class potential. Gets a great chance to fulfill it here.
6 Zalmona (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented gelding for the Peter Blanch table who resumed over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight back and I loved the way he closed his race off late in the piece when a close up second to Chapel City. Had a gun run behind the speed that day, and he should get something similar here.
9 De Jorvik (Bet Now: $9.00) has really turned the corner in recent times. Once upon a time he was a fair dinkum bludger but the Hyam camp has clearly done something to change it up and it’s working. Loved his effort here on Cup Day behind Trogir and he should get a more genuine tempo here. Definite threat.
Race 9. (17:31) Happy Birthday Julie G Handicap (70) 1600m
3 Cosmic Lights (Bet Now: $2.50) is well found, but rightfully so, because you would think only bad luck sees him getting beat. Former Peter Morgan galloper now with Will Clarken and I know I keep harping on, but he is one of the best in Australia at improving tried runners, and he has another one here. On his Melbourne form, this horse should just win.
2 Spy Decoder (Bet Now: $13.00) has really turned the corner since joining the Grant Young team. He is much more genuine now and putting in, which was the case here last Saturday when second to impressive winner Federal Court. Interesting that they don’t claim and instead put a senior jock on. Stable confidence perhaps?
1 Tenere (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Phillip Stokes trained gelding who is slowly getting to peak fitness and does have a touch of class/quality on his side. He ran over 1400m on the Parks track two weeks back where he got a mile off them in the run yet worked home okay late behind Miss Identified. Saves his best for the course proper and should be near hard fit now.
