The Ascot Carnival is nearly at full gear this Saturday with Peters Stakes Day. The $150,000 Group lll feature, over 1500m, will secure the winner a free ticket into the Railway next week. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:24) Evolution AV Plate 1000m
10 Party Night (Bet Now: $8.00) on top in the opener. This filly debuted over 1100m here a fortnight back where she showed great pace from out wide to carve over and lead, but that early burn just told on the filly as she tired late to run fourth to stablemate Carolina Reaper. Draws much better, so she should more easily, and back to 1000m is a big tick.
3 Rebel Knight (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Universal Ruler on debut for the Mcauliffe team. This bloke trialled up okay on October 30 over 850m at Belmont before racing over 400m in a Lark Hill trial where he won that. Hard to get a gauge on him, but he has had the two trials to educate him and he does get Pike steering.
9 Nocelle (Bet Now: $18.00) is a daughter of More Than Ready having her first start for the Dan Moton camp. This girl has had two trials to prepare for her first day at the races, beginning at Lark Hill last Monday. She then went to Belmont on Monday and ran quite well in a narrow second over 1000m in a trial. Has that tough 1000m trial under the belt, which should hold her in good stead.
Race 2. (17:04) Fine Wine Wholesalers Handicap (72+) 1000m
8 The River (Bet Now: $1.95) is quality four year old gelding that is first up here for the Trevor Andrews stable. This guy had two runs in the latter part of the Autumn, placing both times but not quite running up to expectations. Been given a good break and gee he looked sharp in a trial win at Belmont on October 30. Ready to go.
4 Recoiled (Bet Now: $8.50) is a real enigma for Jim Taylor. One day he can bounce out of the gates like a bomb. Another day he can miss it by six, so your heart will be in your mouth at the start, but off his last start second here behind Rhi’s Rocket a fortnight back, he’s in the game and has the fitness edge on The River.
5 Remember Berlin (Bet Now: $12.00) lost his unbeaten second up record in that Rhi’s Rocket race mentioned above. Thought he was given every chance by Aaron Mitchell in the run but he just couldn’t quite ping when running fourth. Brad Parnham takes over and he can certainly lift a horse down on confidence.
Race 3. (17:44) South African Airways Handicap (72+) 1400m
6 La Mouline (Bet Now: $2.10) looks the safe play. This Adam Durrant trained mare is in a real purple patch at the moment, winning her last three outings, and while she isn’t winning by big margins, the huge thing for her that’s great to see is that she finds the line with purpose and wants to win. Maps tricky here, but she can round them up.
5 Senso (Bet Now: $6.00) had late support when racing over 1200m here on Cup Day and the move at odds almost came off but he just ran out of condition late and had to settle for second to Travellin. Not the greatest of third up records, but that last start was a beauty and 1200m up to 1400m looks an ideal set up.
3 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $12.00) is looking for further so the rise to 1400m suits. He ran over 1200m here last Saturday and just got too far back but he worked home pretty well late despite being a fair way off Gunnago. Has run well on the quick turnaround before and he does love Ascot, so give him another chance.
Race 4. (18:25) Cockburn Gateway Shopping City Trophy (1MW) 2200m
2 Master Magician (Bet Now: $2.60) should win this I think. Dominant winner at this track/distance two back before stepping back 100m a fortnight back and bumping into Trap For Fools, who backed that up with another win last week, so that form reads very well, and now Pike gets on from a soft draw. Keen to play.
1 Caralabek (Bet Now: $10.00) placed behind Master Magician in the race mentioned above before racing in the same race won by Trap For Fools. He hit the line with purpose despite being slightly held up and his run was full of merit to run second. Just think the Pike factor will come to the fore, but this bloke should run well all the same.
8 Dudemanbro (Bet Now: $7.50) did an unbelievable job at this track/distance on Cup Day I thought. He was wide no cover for the entire trip, was off the bit 1000m out and looked completely gone right up until the 200m where he picked up, kept finding and hit the line to run third to Musical Art. Big tick for punters is that he was scratched from a thin race at Bunbury on Wednesday for this.
Race 5. (19:00) RJ Peters Stakes 1500m
Confident that 7 Royal Star (Bet Now: $6.50) can make a big statement here and get a spot in the Railway via a win here. Did enough to win fresh at Bunbury before going to the Asian Beau where she sat near a hot speed and that left her gassed behind Pounamu. Much better suited ridden a touch more quiet and third up, she should be ready fitness wise.
4 Ellicazoom (Bet Now: $15.00) is a high quality mare for the Neville Parnham stable that is back home after a Melbourne campaign where nothing really went right for her and I think she probably isn’t quite up to that level. Hard to know how much she has left in the tank, but on class, she’s the one to beat for sure.
9 Touch Of Silver (Bet Now: $5.50) was somewhat outclassed on paper it seemed in the Asian Beau but despite starting long odds, he ran a a beauty I thought behind Pounamu, closing off with purpose to run fourth. That confirmed he is certainly up to this level and stable should always be respected in these features.
Race 6. (19:37) Breast Cancer Care WA Colonel Reeves Stakes 1100m
You’d think only bad luck beats 8 State Solicitor (Bet Now: $1.65) en route to the Winterbottom. Outstanding sprinter for Team Williams who was brilliant here four weeks back at the track/distance, winning quite impressively and showing his customary stunning turn of foot. If he gets normal luck, he wins comfortably.
6 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $6.50) is the horse to beat if the top tip doesn’t get the breaks. This girl is just a ripper for Dan Morton. She gets back and produces a booming finish, which was what happened last time out in the Prince Of Wales when she surged hard late and grabbed the win. Wide gate is ideal, so she can get back, get cover and launch.
10 Volkhoff (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented mare for the Gary Crispin team who comes through the Prince Of Wales won by Dainty Tess. Her effort was very good also. She too got back in the run and wound up with purpose but not to the extent of Dainty Tess. She is lethal when produced second up and remains down in the weights.
Race 7. (20:12) David Grays Aglink WA Champion Fillies Stakes 1600m
10 Special Alert (Bet Now: $15.00) might have only won a maiden here on Cup Day, but she did it in a manner which suggested she is much better than that grade and certainly up to this level. Won with a fair bit of class/authority, and the stable don’t really throw them in the deep end unless they’re confident the horse will perform.
2 Art Series (Bet Now: $5.00) is a tough, tough filly who ran a mighty second in the Burgess Queen last Tuesday. Thought she was given such a sweet ride by Newman and the ride almost deserved the win, but Mikimoto just showed her class and was too good. Think something similar will happen again, but hard to knock the way this girl is racing.
Race 8. (20:47) Feral Brewing Co Handicap (66+) 1800m
1 Very Tempting (Bet Now: $9.50) will appreciate the drop in depth after contesting a race over the mile here a fortnight back where she settled off the pace and tried hard but perhaps just needed the run when fifth to Properantes. I think the rise to 1800m third up will suit her and the claim for young Brown is a big tick.
6 Awesome As (Bet Now: $5.50) is racing as if he’ll eat up the 1800m and he rates as a knockout threat. Loved his effort over 1400m here two weeks ago where he flashed home from the back to run second to La Mouline, who I’m keen on earlier in the day. Looking for further, which he gets here, and McGruddy remains on.
