The best of the best will be on show this Saturday at Randwick, namely the return of superstar mare Winx in the race named in her honour, the Winx Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:05) TAB Highway Plate (Plate 3) 1600m
Hasn’t Jim Jarvis done a remarkable job with 2 Evopex (Bet Now: $7.50 FAT ODDS) since the horse has come to his stable. Brilliant win two back over 1400m at Coffs Harbour before racing over the mile there on Cup Day and aided by a 12/10 from McGuren, the five year old dashed and won well. Got plenty of room for improvement for mine. The one to beat.
14 Panzerfaust (Bet Now: $4.00 FAT ODDS) is a well bred filly for Arrowfield and Paul Messara who has showed good promise during her short career. Resumed with a slick maiden win at Scone before going Muswellbrook where she took an eternity to get out and running but once she did, she savaged the line. Up to the mile looks perfect and appears to have decent ability.
3 Fui San (Bet Now: $15.00 FAT ODDS) isn’t far of winning a Highway I think but he bumps into a couple of above average types here. Ran over 1400m in a Highway here a fortnight ago where he had the suck run behind the speed and stuck on well in defeat behind Magic Choir. The mile looks ideal for this bloke and he is a proven Highway performer.
Race 2. (12:40) Bob Ingham Handicap (88) 2400m
Bit of a nothing race but I’ll go the way of 9 Screamarr (Bet Now: $13.00 FAT ODDS). These horses generally take their turn at winning these races and I think he gets his chance. Ran over 2000m at Rosehill three weeks back where he finished off quite well in restricted room to run third to impressive winner Raqeeq. Remains down in the weights and he’s racing as if 2400m will be ideal.
3 Just Shine (Bet Now: $4.50 FAT ODDS) is a Clare Cunningham trained stayer who has come back in super order. Good win two back over 1800m here on the bog before racing over 2000m where he was slightly held up but chased hard when second to Raqeeq. Tick over trial last week at Warwick Farm to keep him fit and I think 2400m will be no issue.
2 Red Alto (Bet Now: $11.00 FAT ODDS) did beat most of these a fortnight back at this track/distance and he was the toughest on the line in a real struggle with Vaucluse Bay. I don’t think the weight rise is any issue, Tye remains on and clearly will have no issue running out the 2400m yet he is near double figures. Definitely in the mix.
Race 3. (13:15) Forum Handicap (78) 1000m
Gee this looks a lovely race for the James Cummings trained 8 Almanzora (Bet Now: $2.55 FAT ODDS). Punters were quite keen on her when she resumed at the Canterbury midweeks and if you were on it, dear me it was just an utter nightmare to watch. Back to last, badly held up and never really clear until it was all over. Should have won. She can bounce back here, hopefully with better luck in running.
I think back to 1000m will really suit 3 Brook Magic (Bet Now: $4.40 FAT ODDS). Ran over 1200m at Rosehill three weeks ago where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a decent enough kick but just didn’t run the trip out when a close up fourth to Oria. She should lead these for fun from the draw and firm track/rail out, on speed will certainly be no disadvantage.
1 Burradoo (Bet Now: $26.00 FAT ODDS) could be one to include in wider exotics. This bloke resumed at this track/distance two weeks ago and I liked the way he closed his race off despite never being a winning threat behind dynamic winner Soothing. Has an outstanding second up record and the depth here, overall, is nowhere near as strong.
Race 4. (13:50) Silver Shadow Stakes 1200m
Really good race for the fillies. Going the way of 6 Futooh (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) for the Hayes/Dabernig team. The latter part of the Autumn for her, on paper, doesn’t read great, but she didn’t have much luck for the most part and by the end, she probably had enough. Two trials leading in, most notably the latter, tells me she’s ready to go first up.
3 Oohood (Bet Now: $2.70 FAT ODDS) can have strong claims to being the best maiden currently in Australia. Third in the Blue Diamond, second in the Slipper and just pipped in the Sires. I think whatever she does here, she’ll improve on, but she’s clearly got the class/quality to take care of these and go on to better things, and her Flemington jump out got a tick.
7 Laburnum (Bet Now: $34.00 FAT ODDS) is the very interesting runner. I am a fan of this filly but in her last couple of runs she has just wanted to do a bit wrong in the run and use her energy midrace instead of at the end. I think back to a fast run 1200m, she can relax and perhaps then we can see just how good she can be.
Race 5. (14:25) Up And Coming Stakes 1300m
Very keen to see how/if 7 Smart Elissim (Bet Now: $4.75 FAT ODDS) measures up. He has had a bit of a boom on him since day one. Debuted with a spank job success in a Sale maiden before going to Sandown where he took on three rivals in what was a sit/sprint and he proved too good for a good horse in Fighting Harada. I think he can measure up.
6 Military Zone (Bet Now: $4.80 FAT ODDS) is a son of Epaulette for Team Snowden who has risen up the ranks quite quickly. Resumed with an impressive maiden win at Newcastle before racing over 1200m here a fortnight ago where he produced a lethal finishing burst late to nab Danawi right on the line. Should have no trouble with the extra 100m, hard fit and in form.
10 Altair (Bet Now: $18.00 FAT ODDS) is the runner I find interesting. Chris Waller trains this colt, who was down to run in a weak maiden at Canterbury on Wednesday but instead tackles this race. He resumed at Warwick Farm where he had little to no luck in the straight behind stablemate Charge, who ran a narrow second in the Rosebud, so that form reads well. Tricky gate the negative.
Race 6. (15:00) Winx Stakes 1400m
10 Winx…(Bet Now: $2.00 ODDS BOOST) does she really need explaining? Going for a record breaking 26 wins on the bounce, kicking off a campaign honing in on a fourth Cox Plate and off her trials, she certainly doesn’t look to be going backwards. If anything, she looks to be going nearly better, which is quite a scary thought. She wins and enjoy the show.
Great to see 7 Kementari (Bet Now: $7.50 FAT ODDS) in the field and I think for the first time during her winning sequence, Winx will have a serious challenge first up. This bloke is a star. Resumed in the Missile a fortnight back and yep, should have won, but the lack of early speed really went against him in the end when a narrow second to Pierata. He’ll give the great mare a race.
2 Religify (Bet Now: $151.00 FAT ODDS) is an absolute beauty for the Chris Waller team. Indifferent resumption at Ipswich in the Eye Liner. Freshened up, trialled well and was much better last start in the Tatts Mile when fourth to Fit For Purpose, just running out of puff late. Randwick 1400m suits him and he’ll be the horse on speed…perhaps a first four spot.
Race 7. (15:40) : Show County Quality 1200m
If 1 Le Romain (Bet Now: $2.50 FAT ODDS) is anywhere near right, he’ll be winning this. Best horse in the race by an absolute mile and has fab stats at Randwick, 1200m and the Randwick 1200m. Hasn’t raced since the Kingsford Smith Cup when running a narrow second to Impending in a thrilling finish. Two trials leading in have been great…and he just has class on these.
Interesting to see what 7 Siege Of Quebec (Bet Now: $3.20 FAT ODDS) does here. The WaterBott team train this quality three year old, who hasn’t raced since the Autumn Carnival where he ran a gutsy fifth in the Randwick Guineas. Trials leading in have been quite good. Just has to overcome a particularly tricky gate.
3 Boss Lane (Bet Now: $26.00 FAT ODDS) does save his best for Randwick and being third up now, he should just about be match fit. He comes through the Missile where he did a bit of work in the run and really was outclassed but was far from disgraced behind Pierata. Doubt he wins, but he could add some value to exotics.
Race 8. (16:20) Toy Show Quality 1300m
I’m happy to have something each way on 8 Insensata (Bet Now: $9.50 FAT ODDS) for Jason Coyle. She has had two runs back from a break and has been quite good each time, the latest coming three weeks back at Rosehill when two lengths off Eusebio. Has a really good third up record and up to 1300m on the big track should be ideal.
What do we do with 1 Egyptian Symbol (Bet Now: $5.50 FAT ODDS). Bjorn Baker trains this mare, who is certainly good enough to win this but just not sure what to make of her resumption in the Missile. She looked wound up to run well but did pull up 1/5 lame. I couldn’t back her to win because there are question marks, but on her best, a definite winning threat.
I’m very wary of 6 Nettoyer (Bet Now: $10.00 FAT ODDS). I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t pick up a blacktype win this prep and it could well be here. Had a fabulous Autumn prep but just couldn’t get the win despite trying her guts out. Been given a good break and she did look sharp in a Rosehill trial win last Monday. Whatever she does here, she’ll improve on, but she’s got class/quality about her.
Race 9. (17:00) Nicholas Moraitis Handicap (89) 1400m
The Queenslanders have done very well recently in Sydney and I think that trend can continue via 9 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $6.00 FAT ODDS) who is racing quite well this prep for the Kelly Schweida team. His win a fortnight back at Doomben was outstanding given those on speed were seriously advantaged and the low flying Natch was in front but he wore that horse down for a fab win. Run of the race from the gate, think he only runs well.
5 Kaonic (Bet Now: $3.50 FAT ODDS) has always promised so much throughout his career. Could this be the prep he finally puts it together? Barnstorming win at this track/distance four weeks but bear in mind he was helped by the bias and a lovely ride from Sam Weatherley. Can he put two together and work for it? This will be a good test.
1 Best Of Days (Bet Now: $10.00 FAT ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Former British galloper making his Australian debut for the James Cummings yard. The form around him from the UK does read quite well for this and I thought his trial win over 1200m here just under three weeks was solid enough. interesting to see what the market does.
