An eight race program has been assembled for Morphettville this Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:06) Dowie Doole Hurdle 3100m
3 Sir Lopez (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented hurdler for Patrick Payne who didn’t jump the best last time out in the Grand National at Sandown where he failed to complete the course, the race won by Cougar Express. Trialled behind Cougar Express earlier in the week and with the scratchings, he certainly gets his chance to bounce back.
Was very keen on 7 Killarney Kid (Bet Now: $1.24) when he raced in a hurdle at Warrnambool last week and for the most part, he looked to be bolting but when John Allen asked for the big effort, the wheels started spinning and you can put a line through him on heavy ground. Back on a firmer track, he can bounce back.
5 Searaven (Bet Now: $11.00) can certainly win this. Comes through a pretty thin Gawler Hurdle last time out but gee I thought the ride from Martin Kelly was a beauty, getting the perfect trail behind the old warrior Tunes and outsprinting him late. A similar scenario could unfold here and would not be surprised if he won.
Race 2. (13:41) UBET Handicap (70) 1050m
4 Thine Is The Power (Bet Now: $1.40) looks the one with the scratchings. The Hayes/Dabernig team train this filly, who was good on debut behind Humma Mumma before leading all the way in pretty dominant fashion last time over 1000m. Extra 50m no issue, should lead this field up and prove a touch too classy.
1 Dancer’s Kin (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Phillip Stokes trained gelding resuming. Showed good promise in his first prep with a win and four placings from five outings. Form around him from the Autumn does read quite well and he looked sharp in a recent trial. Looks ready to go first up despite breeding suggesting he’ll be better suited over further.
2 Chevite (Bet Now: $12.00) has always had a bit of a boom on him since his debut where he was the subject of a significant plunge, which didn’t come off. Resumed a fortnight back over 1000m on the Parks track in a maiden and finally put everything together to get the job done and break the maiden status. Doubt he wins here, but should be on speed and giving a sight.
Race 3. (14:16) Happy 70th Birthday Harry Perks Handicap (82) 2000m
1 Kellstorm (Bet Now: $2.60) looks a near good thing to my eye and one of the best bets across Australia for the weekend. Darren Weir trains this bloke, who has been gradually building up his fitness and is getting close to peak match fit now. Ran over the 2040m at the Valley two weeks ago and worked home quite well late in the piece behind Morton’s Fork. 3/3 here and this field is weak. Keen.
3 Cinnamon Carter (Bet Now: $6.00) has been a ripping mare for the Robbie Laing team for a few seasons now and with her, once she finds form, she generally holds it. Landed some good bets when bolting up over 1950m on the Parks track a fortnight back under a lovely steer from Jason Holder. Bigger track and extra trip certainly no issue.
5 Igitur (Bet Now: $14.00) comes through the Cinnamon Carter race on the Parks track two weeks back and I thought his effort was pretty solid in defeat despite being well held by the Robbie Laing mare. He tried hard and did make ground late without threatening. Think he’ll be better suited on the bigger track and is a place chance for sure.
Race 4. (14:51) Irish Raceday Handicap (70) 1050m
7 Thompson’s Reward (Bet Now: $3.60) is a quality four year old for the David Jolly camp who drops miles in depth here after contesting the Lightning last time where he bumped into some nag called Nature Strip and ran an honest race behind the boom horse. Back to this level, he can sit back off a likely hot speed and launch late.
8 Debt Collector (Bet Now: $3.70) is a son of Time Thief resuming for the Stuart Padman team. This horse has shown really good city ability in the past but in terms of consistency, I’d say no. Was solid in a couple of Stakes races during the Adelaide Carnival before being tipped out. Gawler trial last week was excellent and he’s a dynamite fresh horse.
In terms of wet trackers, 10 With Hope (Bet Now: $18.00) is certainly one to look out for given her decent record on tracks with give in it. Ran over this track/distance a tick under three weeks back and kept finding under pressure to get the job done narrowly but impressively. Continues to remain down in the weights and can certainly run a race at odds.
Race 5. (15:31) Thirsty Camel Lawn Party Handicap (70) 1600m
8 Minoan Spirit (Bet Now: $7.50) for me. Darren Weir trains this son of Bullbars who comes through a 1600m race at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago where I thought he did a pretty good job considering he was a mile back in the run and had to make his move out wide. In the end, his run behind Streets Of Avalon was solid. Looks well placed here.
6 Aagas (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Ryan Balfour trained gelding who is racing in near career best form at the moment. He ran over the 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight ago and tried very hard but was just pipped late by Extreme Witness, who had the suck run behind and bloused him late. Ripping run here start prior and he can definitely win.
12 Hell On Earth (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing really well for Shawn Mathrick but at the moment just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over the Sandown mile last time where where he closed off well from off the pace when second to the above average Mitrust. Has run well in Adelaide before and this is a very winnable race.
Race 6. (16:11) AAMI Spring Carnival Handicap (75) 1200m
Tricky race but going with 7 Aurelius Hero (Bet Now: $14.00). On the quick back up after racing over 1250m last Saturday on the Parks track where he got a fair way off the pace but finished off quite well when third to impressive winner Balwarra Gold. Gets really good weight relief and Lucinda Doodt rides the horse very well.
8 It’s Time For Magic (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Will Clarken trained mare who is four weeks between runs since racing over 1400m on the Parks track where she was desperately unlucky not to be in the finish behind Trogir. You could make a case she should have nearly won but just had no luck in the straight when having plenty to offer. Tick over trial last week at Gawler was very good.
6 Diapason (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very interesting runner. Quality mare, formerly with Chris Waller, but is making her SA debut for the Will Clarken team and rinse/repeat, Clarken is one of the best in Australia at improving tried horses. This mare did mix her form when racing in Sydney/Melbourne, but she ended her stint with Waller with a spank job at Canterbury. Trial at Gawler was encouraging. Look for her to warm up late.
Race 7. (16:51) Spring Stakes 1200m
4 Exalted Adam (Bet Now: $6.50) is four weeks between runs for the in form Grant Young team. He raced over 1400m on the Parks track and produced an unbelievable finale when let down by Jamie Kah for a rather dominant win. Ran well in the Goodwood so he’s certainly up to this level and back to 1200m no issue.
2 Steel Frost (Bet Now: $3.50) is a beauty for Will Clarken who is around two months between runs since contesting the Golden Topaz on the bottomless track at Swan Hill when running a courageous fourth to Inn Keeper despite clearly not being happy at all on the surface. Fresh on firmer footing off a fast speed, he’ll take some beating, and did look sharp in a recent trial.
He lacks the class/brilliance of some of these, but it’s hard to knock the way 7 Hard Empire (Bet Now: $15.00) is going about his business at the moment. Strong winner here two back at the track/distance before racing over the 1250m on the Parks track a fortnight ago and proved too good. Hard fit, he’ll be on speed and I’m sure he’ll give a sight.
Race 8. (17:30) Heineken 3 Handicap (64) 1200m
If 2 Moghul Empire (Bet Now: $3.30) is anywhere near right, he’ll be too good for this lot. Will Clarken trains this gelding, who showed really good promise in his first prep, winning a couple of races in really impressive fashion before not pulling up 100% when down the track behind Vom Costa Glass and was tipped out. Recent trial was quite good and ability wise, clearly the best horse.
8 Miss Coolangatta (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Paul Preusker trained mare who has been going about her business really nicely this time and finally got the win on the board last Monday at Warracknabeal where she looked a good thing on paper and won under a lovely steer from Dean Holland. Stable have been going great guns when bringing horses to SA and they look to have another likely prospect.
17 Wise And Happy (Bet Now: $19.00) is a now ten year old gelding but gee Jess Giles has got this bloke running well. Ran over this track/distance on August 1 where he got a mile back in the run but closed off quite well late when third to the well backed Bajan. Gets a 4kg weight swing on that horse and draws a better gate so turning the tables wouldn’t shock at all and that horse is $5 whereas this bloke is around $20+.
