Nine races will be run and won at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:49) Makers Mark Handicap 1000m
5 Miss Lot Won (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is on top for me in the opener. Tom Button trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since December 18 in the Calaway Gal at Doomben when placing behind Away Game, which at the time, like most, I wasn’t sure how strong that form would be…turns out to be the best form reference re race class given the winner bolted up in the Magic Millions. Like her back to 1000m and gets run of the race from the barrier.
1 Dark Son (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) looks a speed demon for the Sears camp that is suited back to 1000m. Resumed in the Gold Nugget two weeks ago at the Gold Coast when doing plenty of work near the front and was entitled to drop away but kept finding and was really good in defeat when fourth to Wisdom Of Water, with that form standing up in the Magic Millions. He’ll jump and run from the wide gate and give plenty of cheek.
6 Grenado (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a Pierro colt for Chris Waller that is on debut. This youngster has had three trials in readiness for start one, the latest trial coming over 1000m at the Gold Coast on Tuesday when bolting up over 1000m and had plenty in hand. Where he gets to from the gate I don’t know, but clearly has a decent engine under the hood.
Race 2. (14:24) Canadian Club Plate 1000m
I think 2 Pizonie (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. This gelding was a horse I was really keen on several weeks ago at Eagle Farm but on face value, he was very disappointing behind Rock Beat. In saying that, I think he was ridden too close to the speed, but with the inside gate, they had to use it. He can sit back here and launch late.
5 Red Chase (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a Desleigh Forster trained four year old that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since August 31 over 1400m when failing to finish behind Oink, pulling up with a sore fetlock hence why Du Plessis eased him out of the race. Been given a good break, trialled well leading into this…will be interesting to see what the market does.
6 Usmanov (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Team Edmonds trains this gelding, who gave them a spanking to win first up at the Gold Coast before going to the Sunny Coast when a close up third to the above average mare Jami Lady. Was nominated for Sydney a couple of weeks ago but stable have kept him on ice and have found a lovely race.
Race 3. (15:02) Cascade Handicap 2200m
3 Art Attack (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) is a Jenny Graham trained stayer that is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when fighting on gamely in defeat and was close up when third to Sir Barnabus. He is a horse who does tend to race well when his races are spaced and if this track has give in it, that is just perfect for his winning claims.
1 Capital Gain (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) looks one of the leading chances here. Paul Butterworth trains this Group l winner, who was outclassed in the Summer Cup at Randwick before coming here for the Shoot Out when on speed and fighting on strongly to run fourth to The Candy Man. That form reads A1 for this kind of race. The issue being he can really mix his form.
2 Skytrek (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) can be a big improver back in grade. He contested the Shoot Out three weeks ago where he was ridden completely upside down on speed and was the first horse beat when last to The Candy Man. The run prior here when beaten narrowly by Sir Barnabus was a ripper and a repeat of that here will see him go close.
Race 4. (15:42) Grinders Handicap 1500m
Les Kelly has a real knack of getting these benchmark horses to go through their grades at the Gold Coast then measure up in town, which is what 8 The Kingdom (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) did three weeks ago at this track/distance and found the line pretty well in defeat I thought behind impressive winner Great Powers. He should be around the mark and prove hard to beat.
13 Too Hot To Hold (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Sizzling for Steve O’Dea who is racing in good form. Impressive win from behind to win over 1400m at the Sunny Coast two back before being freshened up and stepping up to the mile when beating all bar Canapes in a strong effort. Truly run 1500m at Eagle Farm should suit and is one of the leading chances.
15 First Dawn (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) takes on the older horses in town but I think Stuart Kendrick has her going well. Ran over the mile on her home track at the Sunny Coast a tick under three weeks ago and was game in defeat despite being held when third to Murless. Like her back to 1500m, down in the weights and does no work from the gate.
Race 5. (16:22) Roku Gin Handicap 1600m
This looks beautiful placement from Chris Waller when it comes to 4 New Universe (Bet Now: $3.40). The open handicaps in Sydney are only going to get harder as the Autumn Carnival approaches and now the Brisbane Summer Carnival is finished, these open handicaps up here are very winnable and he fits the criteria after two solid runs in Sydney. Third up at a mile on a big track, I’m keen on him.
Rob Heathcoate has 2 Cool Chap (Bet Now: $3.50) going really well. Forget he went around in the Brisbane Handicap, but bounced back to positive form in the Bernborough with a closing third to Niccanova, closing off with some of the best late splits of the race. Depth here nowhere near as strong and is bursting to win a race. Gets a great chance here.
3 Emphasis (Bet Now: $21.00) is better suited over further, but an improved showing wouldn’t shock at all, especially if he can get his toe into the ground with rain forecast. Ran last in the Buffering behind Deep Image, but that race had really good depth to it and those behind had no chance. Can pull out a run second up, likes racing here and drops a fair way in grade/depth.
Race 6. (17:02) Cascade Handicap 1200m
16 Able Mabel (Bet Now: $12.00) would be a good thing in a maiden, but the fact she resumes here in a 3YO Saturday race does intrigue me because Barry Lockwood isn’t one to throw them in the deep end. This girl was a star trialler at Deagon last week. Loved the way she put them away to win and the was clearly the fastest across the maiden heats. Happy to take a gamble on her at the odds.
1 Take Tea (Bet Now: $4.40) is the big watch here. Was hard in the market when resuming two weeks ago at the Gold Coast but the saddle shifted shortly after the start and Bossy eased her out of the race, so hard to get a real gauge on how well she is going, but on prior, she’s certainly up to beating these. Just want to see what the market does.
3 Gala Miss (Bet Now: $9.50) is a quality filly for Kelly Schweida that resumed with a strong win at the Gold Coast against the older horses before going to the Sunny Coast and sticking on well in defeat behind Kalik after sitting wide in the run. Third up from a break, she should be ready fitness wise, and did show good promise as a two year old.
Race 7. (17:42) TAB Handicap 1200m
Is 11 Better Than Groovy (Bet Now: $6.00) a better horse with the blinkers on? If you’re going off the maiden win last time, the answer is simply yes. Backed as if unbeatable with them going on first time and he bolted in, running sharp time relative to the day. Potentially good speed here, so ideally this bloke can land box seat/three back at worst and off that maiden win, I think he can measure up with upside to come.
2 Raging Pole (Bet Now: $7.50)…can he back up what he did two weeks ago at the Gold Coast? Outside Yamazaki, it was the best performance of the meeting given he was wide no cover for the trip with the first 600m run in sub 34, yet still finished best. If that hasn’t busted him, and he just holds that form, he’ll take a power of beating.
1 Master Jamie (Bet Now: $3.60) is an absolute beauty for Graeme Green that will look the winner for a fair amount of this race. Took on the older horses at Rockhampton three weeks ago and bolted up under Whiteley, carrying the weight with ease, spanking his rivals and running time. Harder here, but Les Tilley is back on, pings to the front and gives a great sight.
Race 8. (18:22) Canadian Club Handicap 1400m
12 Silent Explorer (Bet Now: $4.00) goes on top with this track likely to get worse as the day progresses and he’s the best swimmer in this race by a mile. Has had a couple of runs of the Edmonds camp and has been pretty good, the latest seeing him win at the Sunny Coat on soft ground. Like him up in trip, down in the weights…he’ll take some beating.
Les Ross is doing a really good job with 11 Great Powers (Bet Now: $11.00). She’s similar to that of the well performed stablemate River Racer that she’s a super money spinner for connections and is around the mark more often than not. Deserved win came here three weeks ago and I loved the way she put them away when asked for the big effort by Collett. A win again wouldn’t shock at all.
5 Galtero (Bet Now: $17.00) is a son of Snitzel for Tony Gollan that resumes, having not raced since October 5 over the mile at Eagle Farm when down the track behind Magstock, but was at the end of a long prep and looked a tired horse, as reflected in betting. Can sprint well fresh and didn’t move too bad in a recent Doomben trial.
Race 9. (18:54) Mount Franklin Handicap 1200m
12 Pennino (Bet Now: $3.60) is a really good mare for Darryl Hansen and should take a power of beating against this lot. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where she got a fair way back in the run from the inside gate but really liked the way she found the line behind Jami Lady. If she can sit that little bit closer in the run, she’ll take some beating.
7 Lim’s Lightning (Bet Now: $20.00) third I really like at odds. Ran over 1200m here three weeks ago where he was a bit flat footed when the sprint went but was okay late behind Jami Lady, looking like a horse that wants further, which is what he gets here. When racing in Singapore, 1400m+ is when he raced best, so ideally want him up in trip rather than staying at 1200m, but should be at peak fitness.
13 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $26.00) stunned many when winning two back at Doomben, beating up some handy types. Then raced at this track/distance three weeks ago and was solid enough in defeat without really threatening behind Jami Lady. He does seem to like his races spaced it seems and if he can sit closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.
