A really good program has been assembled for Rosehill on Saturday where it is Civic Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:25) Pro Rata ATC Membership On Sale Handicap 1400m

Back Me

2 Hualalai (Bet Now: $2.40) had been a bit of an enigma to kick off his career, but he does appear to have turned the corner this time in. Won narrowly/impressively fresh at Kembla before bolting up in a Randwick trial. He then went to the 1350m here a fortnight back and ran a super race against the tempo when second to Gaulois. Gets Bowman steering now and looks one of the hardest to beat.

3 Heliosphere (Bet Now: $2.60) had really good market support when racing over the Warwick Farm mile on the Queens Birthday and aided by a lovely on speed steer from McEvoy, the China Horse Club colt clung on to win. Back to 1400m is no issue for me here and he rates highly off that last start effort.

Long Shot

6 Uncle Rodriguez (Bet Now: $21.00) each way value. Paul Perry trained youngster who was too sharp for them fresh at Tamworth before going to Port Macquarie where he was left a bit flat footed behind the speed but I liked the way he fought on when a narrow second. Up to 1400m on the bigger track is ideal and he should be cherry ripe fitness wise.

Race 2. (12:00) Handicap (76) 1500m

Back Me

3 High Mist (Bet Now: $3.80) was an alarming drifter in the market when racing here a fortnight back but despite that, he loomed to win the race and looked home but just didn’t quite finish it off. Going to butter up again because I am hoping that effort should toughen him right up for this assignment.

4 Faraway Town (Bet Now: $5.50) is a gutsy filly for the Matty Smith yard who has been very good in two runs back from a break. Ran in the Just Dreaming race two weeks ago where she got a mile back in the run but I really liked the way she closed off late to run fourth. If she can sit a bit closer in the run, she’ll be a threat for sure.

Long Shot

5 Royal Ace (Bet Now: $9.50) is a smart three year old for the Darren Weir camp. He ran over 1500m at Ballarat last time out and I thought his effort was outstanding. Sat back in a crawl before Rawiller eased wide 800m out and he had to do all the work, and that just told late. If he can get better luck here, he’ll go close.

Race 3. (12:35) McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (78) 1900m

Back Me

10 Domed (Bet Now: $5.50) is a pretty exciting filly for the John Thompson yard. Sprouted wings to win quite comfortably to break the maiden two back at Goulburn before going to Canterbury and the 1900m there where she looked in a hopeless spot but she got the breaks and savaged the line to win right on the peg. I’m confident she can go on with it.

9 Walk The Streets (Bet Now: $4.40) ran over 1550m at Canterbury a tick over two weeks back and on face value, she was disappointing. But in hindsight, I think she was ridden a bit upside down. She’s much better suited when ridden with cover and having the last say, not on speed. If ridden with more patience, she’ll get the 1900m comfortably.

Long Shot

4 Rustic Melody (Bet Now: $12.00) comes through the mile race at Warwick Farm on the Queens Birthday where she looked a little unlucky when second to Fantasize. Not sure she would have won, but I think she should have finished closer. She is proven at 2000m+, so the 1900m here is no issue and she has upside.

Race 4. (13:10) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1800m

Back Me

14 Chadana (Bet Now: $9.00) represents some value to me here. Dryden/Collings trained filly who did a really good job in defeat last time out at Canterbury, sticking on well behind Fournette, beaten 1.4L. That’s decent city form, and you always have to respect city form when it coems to the Highway.

2 Barbass (Bet Now: $7.00) is a quality three year old for the Cameron Crockett yard. Took a while to get another win on the board, but he did do it last time out in a Class One/Maiden at Dubbo when really making hard work of it, but he was good to the line, so 1800m here suits and the big tick is Bowman steering.

Long Shot

13 It’s A Lottery (Bet Now: $17.00) is a handy three year old gelding for the John Bateman who ran over 2000m last time out against the older horses at Bathurst where he was given a lovely ride near the speed by Bensley and drew clear to get the job done. Back to 1800m is the slight query, but I think he’ll be okay.

Race 5. (13:45) ATC Winter Cup 2400m

Back Me

3 Gallic Chieftain (Bet Now: $2.25) was disappointing two back at Flemington behind surprise winner Northern Journey before going to the 2040m at the Valley where he was confidently backed and justified the support of the punters with a commanding/dominant performance. The rise to 2400m is perfect and he has enormous upside.

6 Montauk (Bet Now: $5.00) was a pest once upon a time but he is now a ripper for Chris Waller. He is rarely running a bad race. Ran over 2000m here two weeks back where he got off the speed and chased hard all the way down the straight to run third to the hard fit/in form Supply And Demand. 2400m is the unknown but I think he’ll get it.

Long Shot

2 Black Tomahawk (Bet Now: $8.50) is a stablemate of Gallic Chieftain who surprised many a fortnight back over 2040m at the Valley, charging home from off the pace to nab Megablast right on the peg. He is a horse most effective with sting out of the track and while I am confident Gallic Chieftain has his measure, he can still run well.

Race 6. (14:25) TAB Handicap (85) 1200m

Back Me

5 Nudierudie (Bet Now: $9.50) comes through the In Times Of War race at Randwick on May 27 where she ran okay without going overboard. Attempted to lead all the way and kicked for a brief period but weakened to finish over two lengths from the winner. Does map well here and can pull out a decent run on her home track.

2 Upscale (Bet Now: $5.00) is a good mare for Upscale who ran at this track/distance a fortnight back where Bowman gave her every chance in the run and for the most part she looked the winner but she just couldn’t quite get past Test The World. That filly went on to run well last week, so the form has stood up, and now she’s had the hard 1200m run under the belt, she’ll be better off here.

Long Shot

7 Magic Alibi (Bet Now: $11.00) is a quality mare for Gerald Ryan who comes back to her own sex after resuming against the boys here a fortnight, with no trials, where she sat wide no cover for the trip and that was the end of her but she stuck on well behind Sir Plush. Is a second up winner, draws better now and I think she is a sharp improver.

Race 7. (15:05) Civic Stakes 1350m

Back Me

9 Telopea (Bet Now: $9.00) looks one of the better bets on the program here. Darren Weir trained mare who worked home with purpose two back in the Proud Miss at Morphettville behind Fuhryk. She then went to the Valley four weeks back where she got back and finished off nicely when second to Whistle Baby. Stable clearly looking for some blacktype and they get their chance here.

8 Sir Bacchus (Bet Now: $3.80) looks a key threat here. This bloke is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Rosehill where he looked a little unlucky not to win when a close up second to Royal Tudor. Back to 1350m is the query with him, but I can’t ignore what he did last time out.

Long Shot

12 Girl Sunday (Bet Now: $8.50) is a good mare for the Gerald Ryan yard who is four weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where she did a mountain of work on speed and did kick strongly but was beaten off the final 150m. Better suited over slightly further, which she gets here, she maps well, and has been given time to recover from the last start gutbuster.

Race 8. (15:45) Schweppes Handicap (93) 1100m

Back Me

11 Calanda (Bet Now: $6.00) goes on top for me here. This Team Snowden trained galloper has had little luck this time in, with the obvious being in the Hawkesbury Guineas. He comes through the Daybreak Lover three weeks back where he worked home really strongly against the tempo behind All Over Bosanova. Provided we get an even playing field here, he’ll take some beating.

4 Princefamous (Bet Now: $6.50) looks a great each way play here. Team Snowden trained sprinter who is lethal when produced fresh and is a good play for mine. His Summer prep was pretty good, scoring a dominant first up win and while he didn’t go on with afterwards, he ran well. Couldn’t have trialled any better both times and he is at his best first up.

Long Shot

12 King Darci (Bet Now: $13.00) is a tough and talented gelding that resumes for the Tim Martin yard. He was outstanding during the Spring/Summer, ending the campaign with a dominant display at Warwick Farm. Resumes with no trials, which isn’t a surprise with the stable, he goes well fresh and has a tidy record on his home track.

Race 9. (16:25) #theraces Handicap (77) 1500m

Back Me

7 Carzoff (Bet Now: $2.90) should take care of this lot. Former French galloper who has had a couple of runs for Chris Waller down under, and both times he has been great. Ran over 1800m here a fortnight back where he was backed as if unbeatable. Bowman gave him a peach and the horse did all bar win the race, running second to the hard fit Collateral, who franked the form by bolting up last week. Just wins.

4 Reneged (Bet Now: $4.40) was luckless when sixth at Warwick Farm two back, a race where Carzoff ran second in. Reneged then went to Canterbury where he was heavily backed and justified the support with a superb win despite sitting wide no cover for the trip. Confident he can measure up here.

Long Shot

2 Obsidian (Bet Now: $14.00) specking at longer odds when resuming at this track/distance two weeks ago and that support was somewhat justified as he worked home with real purpose from the back to run fifth to stablemate Liapari, who ran well last week to frank the form. Would prefer him over further, but nonetheless, a definite chance.
