Blacktype racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday where it is Spring Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out seven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out five metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:01) Cornerstone Stud Passion Brings Success Handicap (75) 1600m
2 Egyptian Gold (Bet Now: $2.70) has to translate her recent Synthetic form to the turf but you can’t put a line through anything Lindsey Smith is saddling up at the moment. This mare made up decent ground late first up before stepping up to 1400m where she got a lovely sit just off the speed and finished best to win impressively. Up to the mile looks ideal and in a tricky race, I’ll go her way.
7 Cavalry Gold (Bet Now: $15.00) is racing quite consistently this time in for the Sue Jaensch stable. Solid effort here two back behind Marina before going to Mount Gambier when wide no cover for the trip and fighting on strongly to run a game second. Down to 51kg after the claim, looks to get a soft lead and we saw a few runs ago that he can be effective when leading.
3 Kirona (Bet Now: $20.00) is a daughter of Krupt for Ryan Balfour who has had two runs back from a decent layoff and is gradually getting to peak fitness. Ran over the mile last time out at Morphettville and really had no chance the way the race was run so for mine, a total forgive behind Polar Vortex. If this was 2000m, I’d give her a knockout chance of winning. One for exotics.
Race 2. (13:36) BalfourRacing.com.au Handicap (82) 2028m
He’s working up to a win is 2 Up ‘N’ Rolling (Bet Now: $7.50) and I think he can get it here. Grant Young trains this former Chris Waller runner, who has had a few runs in SA now and has placed at his past two, the latest at this track/distance two weeks ago when a game second to Flow Meter. He’s crying out for a dry track and if that eventuates here, he’ll take some beating.
5 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $4.80) is a 10 year old veteran for John Hickmott who is an absolute beauty and he showed that with a strong win at this track/distance two weeks ago, sitting off the speed before Fawke pushed the button and the horse found plenty when challenged to win impressively. He’s always thereabouts at this level and will go close once again.
7 Korodon (Bet Now: $7.00) comes through the Flow Meter race from two weeks ago where I thought Toeroek gave the gelding an absolute peach of a ride in front and for mine, he had his chance when third to the Hickmott veteran, but was far from disgraced. Interesting he was well backed to win there despite some patchy/suspect form. Looks the leader again and will give a sight, but needs to improve a few lengths to win.
Race 3. (14:11) Harry Perks Handicap (75) 1200,
Just want to see a market push for 1 Social Spin (Bet Now: $2.50) because if he’s right, he’s better than these. Talented gelding that’s now with the Price/Kent stable after formerly racing with Darren Weir. First up last prep was at the Valley and he ran second to subsequent Group l placegetter Behemoth, which reads far superior to anything engaged here. Form guide will say he’s just had one trial, but a couple of weeks prior he had a jumpout at Ballarat and moved very well. He’s better than these. Just want a market push.
7 Northern River (Bet Now: $9.50) isn’t far off a win I don’t think. She was a month between runs when racing over 1100m at Bendigo last time, sitting off a good speed and finding the line well late to run a game third to the well performed local Carlingford. Fitter and up to 1200m look two big ticks for this mare and if the speed is solid in front, she’ll be one of the strongest late.
6 Diapason (Bet Now: $11.00) is an interesting runner. Will Clarken trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since contesting the Queen Of The South when down the track behind Music Bay in a race which has turned out to be a decent enough form reference. Can sprint well fresh and her recent jumpout was more than encouraging to the eye. Just want to wait and see what the market does with her late.
Race 4. (14:51) Mill Park Stud Maiden Plate 1100m
5 Aten (Bet Now: $3.40) is a daughter of Fighting Sun for Tony McEvoy that resumes. This filly had two runs in the Summer to start her career, which included a solid debut effort at the Valley behind subsequent Group l placegetter Lady Lupino. Liked the way she has been going at the Flemington jumpouts, seemingly looking a more mature filly compared to the 2YO version.
2 Defiant Dancer (Bet Now: $2.70) is a definite watch here. Looks an above average gelding who is first up, having not raced since debuting in late March when running second to Li’l Kontra, who has since gone on to be a Stakes winner, so that form reads very well and his recent trial/jumpout suggested he’s come back in good order, so he looks a clear danger.
I can’t see the winner coming from outside the top two. For multiples, I reckon 4 Mavette (Bet Now: $23.00) is the value. His debut behind Pretty Brazen at Murray Bridge was pretty good prior to racing in the Autumn Splendour race from two weeks ago where he was ridden aggressively and was a beaten horse early on in the straight. Blinkers are off and the Nose Roll goes on, so in
Race 5. (15:31) SA Thoroughbred Breeders Members Handicap (70) 1050m
Just want to see a market push for the talented mare that is 2 Schilldora (Bet Now: $1.75). She’s a low level Stakes class mare that if right, she can put field away and likely finds a race in Melbourne to test the water again. Had a very good Autumn prep, but was derailed in the end by injury, which saw her miss the Adelaide Carnival. Market will tell you if she’s ready or not but recent jumpout says she’s ready.
3 Experimentation (Bet Now: $3.20) is a son of Nicconi for the Will Clarken stable that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since early November when close up behind stablemate and above average galloper Columbia. Stable has recently been firing with their runners first up and loved the way he went about his business in a trial at Murray Bridge behind the well performed Mile High.
Schilldora should win, Experimentation should run second…waddle your finger and hope for the best as to who runs third. I think 6 Punt Club (Bet Now: $11.00) and his best days are behind with him. These days he saves his best for the Synthetic tracks, which he ran at last start at Ballarat when leading and giving a good kick but just feeling the pinch late to run second. He’ll likely lead and give a sight.
Race 6. (16:11) Sleepy's 70th Birthday Handicap (64) 1800m
Confident that 7 Hasta La War (Bet Now: $6.50) can measure up. Sue Murphy trains this gelding, who has had three career outings. Should have been in the finish two back at Murray Bridge behind Vahash but had no luck. Then went for an easy kill at Mount Gambier and bolted in, running good time relative to the day. Like the look of him and finds a very winnable city race.
5 Exalted Ruth (Bet Now: $8.50) is heading in the right direction for Grant Young. This mare has won her past two, both coming at Gawler, with the latest being last Wednesday over 1700m at Gawler when chasing a genuine speed and she was there to be beaten late, but found plenty when challenged and clung on to win. Harder here, but hard to knock a mare who is winning.
6 Busker’s Ballad (Bet Now: $8.00) certainly has the ability to win a race like this, and perhaps a bit better, but he’s just struggling to put it together at the moment. Thought he was good here two back behind Exalted Craftsman before racing at Murray Bridge last Saturday where the race shape was totally against him behind Silent Command. Back to this level, giving him another chance.
Race 7. (16:51) Spring Stakes 1200m
I’m going to take the punt on 10 Dalasan (Bet Now: $8.00) to resume a winner for the Macdonald/Gluyas team. He did some good things for me in the Autumn, winning his first two before going to the Sires at Flemington where he wins if he runs straight, instead running a narrow second to La Tene. Looked a big dope in that prep but a jumpout last week indicated he’s come back a much better horse and with only 51.5kg on his back, gee he’ll take some beating.
1 Scales Of Justice (Bet Now: $1.70) is probably better than these but do I want to back him second up off a decent break and an outstanding first up win? No. He does look the key threat and the one to beat because the Bletchingly win was simply brilliant and he made a mess of them, with his Group l class really coming to the fore late in drawing clear. Has to be respected but I couldn’t back him.
4 Hard Empire (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Team Jolly trains galloper that is five weeks between runs since contesting the Monash when back in the run and finding the line okay late in the piece behind surprise winner Oak Door. 1100m is short of his best, so like him up to 1200m and his recent jumpout here was pretty good, suggesting he has come on from the resumption.
Race 8. (17:30) Sir Prancealot @ Cornerstone Stud Handicap (64) 1200m
7 Alsvior (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Sue Jaensch trained gelding who had a month freshen up prior to racing at Murray Bridge where Paul Gatt got him into a good spot just off the speed and the Statue Of Liberty gelding tried hard but couldn’t get there and had to settle for Diplomatic Measure. Stable have had a lean run at metro level recently, but this bloke is capable of changing that and his Casterton jumpout win on Monday was sharp.
Concede 12 Outlandos (Bet Now: $1.60) is a nice horse and could progress to better things than this, but gee he’s short enough at near even money. He graduated through the grades nicely when last in work, ending the prep with a solid effort behind La Tene in the Sires at Flemington. Liked the way he went in a recent Cranbourne trial, hard to beat…just too short for mine.
Not sure what to make of the last start win from 10 Ambertone (Bet Now: $19.00) at this track/distance. She brought Port Augusta form to town, started as one of the near rank outsiders, worked to find the lead, but she was too good. Either she’s flying, or she didn’t beat much. Thinking perhaps it’s the latter, but despite the SP, the win had a lot of merit and can’t totally ignore her.
