Nine races will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday for Belmont Newmarket Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:48) Westspeed Maiden 1200m
This is short of an ideal trip for 3 Jovella (Bet Now: $5.00), but I reckon class will get her home first up. This girl hasn’t raced since contesting the Natasha Stakes when only a few lengths off Jedaffair. Was seemingly a stayer when in work for that first prep, but liked the way she went in a recent Lark Hill trial and looked to have speed in the legs, something she didn’t have last prep.
5 Paty’s Forecast (Bet Now: $3.50) is first up here. This mare made her debut at Northam on May 30 when sitting off the speed and finding the line strongly late to run a close up third to Ascot Gold in an encouraging effort. Tipped out and given a break. Liked the way she trialled at Pinjarra on Monday and always am a fan of horses that trial and race within seven days.
1 Sassational (Bet Now: $10.00) hasn’t been far away of late but is just struggling to put win number one on the board. Attempted to lead all the way over 1000m here two weeks ago and gave a decent enough kick in front. Just felt the pinch late and was bloused near the peg by Schimmel. Have a query on her at a strong 1200m, but she looks to get a soft lead, which will help her cause.
Race 2. (14:27) Singapore Turf Club Trophy 1200m
3 Some Sort (Bet Now: $5.50) for me in what looks a good race for the three year olds. This bloke resumed over 1000m at Northam and led all the way, getting the job done impressive and clocking good splits in a maiden which looked to have a bit of depth to it. Off that, I like him up to 1200m given the sustained speed he showed in winning fresh and think he can measure up here.
1400m back to 1200m is the query with 1 Apache Pass (Bet Now: $10.00) but I reckon Lindsey Smith has a decent horse here. Both career outings have come here, the debut seeing him just miss out over 1300m before stepping up to 1400m where he was left flat footed when the sprint went on bur surged late and got the bob in. If this was a mile, he’d be a good thing. Just back to six furlongs is the niggle.
6 Rocky Path (Bet Now: $11.00) looks to be going well for Vaughn Sigley but can’t quite crack it for a win, so back to 1200m I like. She comes through the Apache Pass race from two weeks back over 1400m where she loomed to win and looked the winner but just didn’t run the seven furlongs out when running third, beaten under a half length. She’d nearly be on top had she drawn better.
Race 3. (15:07) Tabtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (64+) 2100m
3 Zaratite (Bet Now: $2.20) looks a progressive stayer for Team Williams. Lovely ride from Brodie Kirby saw him win two back at Pinjarra before going here where Pike got him in a sweet spot just off the speed before getting clear air in the straight and he finished best to get the win. Like the way he’s going about it and confident he can go close to winning once again.
2 Here Comes Lenni (Bet Now: $2.60) is on the seven day back up after racing over 2000m here last Saturday where he got a mile back in the run but saved ground nearer the inside and was there to win 250m out but couldn’t dash quick to get there when fourth to Spiritual Warrior. Tends to race well with juice in the track so with that being the case here, he’s a definite threat.
Could make a little case for 1 Dark Prospect (Bet Now: $27.00). He comes through the Spiritual Warrior race from last Saturday where he didn’t have much luck in the straight when seemingly having something to offer. I think this level is where he is best at these days and up in trip, based on last week, looks his go too, so better luck here and he can win for sure.
Race 4. (15:47) Nathan Bennett 40th Birthday Handicap (64+) 1400m
Sharon Miller looks to have a good one here in the shape of 6 Uni Time. (Bet Now: $2.90).This guy is 2/2 this prep, both wins coming over 1200m here in impressive fashion from off the pace. Did run second at 1500m last prep so up to 1400m looks fine, he’s in winning form and I don’t see this race being overly strong depth wise so no reason to see why he can’t make it 3/3.
1 New Age (Bet Now: $13.00) is a talented mare resuming. She mixed her form during the Autumn, winning one start then being awful the next, with consistency being her main issue. Like her at 1400m first up and her recent Lark Hill trial was more than encouraging. Likely eases back to near last from the wide gate, but if they go at a good gallop in front, she’ll be strong late.
2 Sense Of Power (Bet Now: $11.00) is a middle distance/staying mare for Adam Durrant that resumes. She really put it together around this time last year, winning a few races, including a couple here, before ending the prep with a down the track effort over 2000m. Hasn’t raced for nearly 12 months but has had three trials to get her ready for the return, so the grounding is certainly there.
Race 5. (16:27) Belmont Newmarket 1200m
7 Tamasa (Bet Now: $4.80) is a fascinating runner. Darren Weir used to train this very talented animal but is now in the hands of Lindsey Smith and really keen to see how he goes at his WA debut. Was putting it together towards the ends of last prep and was building to something decent. Now in WA, loved the way he went in a recent trial and if there is market support, I’d be jumping on.
5 Great Again (Bet Now: $2.35) has had a little freshen up for Lindsey Smith. Is six weeks between runs, having last raced on July 6 over 1300m when beaten narrowly by the then in form Nikitas. Interesting that Pike is booked to ride instead of not riding Profit Street. Comes here without a trial, but has residual fitness and a very good record when produced with fresh legs.
1 Rebel King (Bet Now: $9.00) looks to be somewhat back on track. The jury was somewhat out on him leading into his run over 1000m here two weeks ago and he performed very well, and was a bit unlucky too, getting held up early on in the straight before getting clear and finding the line well. He’s suited up to 1200m and we know the class/quality is there. He can win.
Race 6. (17:05) D'Orsogna Handicap (1MW) 1200m
2 Final Hearing (Bet Now: $2.40) looks to find a really winnable race for his resumption. Talented four year old who makes his return to racing, having not raced since the Raconteur during the Ascot Autumn Carnival when close up behind the above average Cup Night. He does look a Stakes class horse so you’d like to think he can put this field away and the recent trial indicates he’s come back well.
Big win from 6 Lookout (Bet Now: $5.00) last Saturday over 1300m here. He settled in a good spot just off the speed and took a while to wind up when asked but the final 75-100m, he really surged late and got up on the peg. Back to 1200m is a query, but with the soft track, it will feel like a 1300-1400m contest, he’s hard fit and won’t mind a track with give in it.
Back to 1200m will suit 7 On The Turps (Bet Now: $11.00). He ran over 1400m here last Saturday where he just pulled too hard in the run and had no petrol tickets for the straight when down the track behind Blackwood River. He’s going much better than what that reads so back to a fast run 1200m I think is a big tick and if he’s recovered from that last run, he’s certainly one for multiples.
Race 7. (17:40) Brendan Kane 60th Birthday Handicap (70+) 1000m
Hard to get away from 5 Essential Spice (Bet Now: $1.90), who is probably the form horse in WA at the moment. She has been electric at her past two outings, both coming at this track/distance where she has sat off the speed but unleashed a brilliant finale each time to win. There is talk that she could be on the plane to Melbourne if she keeps going. No reason to see why she can’t measure up with the right placement there, so have to be with her here.
Giving serious respect to 2 Floyd (Bet Now: $11.00). Chris Gangemi trains this sprinter, who hasn’t raced since June 22 in the HG Bolton where he looked a winning chance 200m out but class found him out late when third to Valour Road. Fresh at 1000m and looks really well in at the weights. Just think he has to hold the form of last start to go close to beating these.
The best version of 6 Masquerade (Bet Now: $9.00) is certainly good enough to beat these. Just not sure where he is at. He had one run in the early part of the Winter, seeing him finish down the track behind Great Again. He’s certainly got the form and talent to go close to beating these and the trial win indicates he’s on track, but that was a trial. Want to see him do it on race day.
Race 8. (18:20) Crown Perth Handicap (76+) 1400m
Looks pretty straight forward here with 3 Neurological (Bet Now: $3.20), who comes here four weeks between runs since getting the job done at this track/distance as a short priced elect, with Pike riding a very cool and confident race on the gelding, who was too good for his rivals. Like the way he’s gone about it this time in and he has performed well with the break between runs in the past.
Third up from a spell, 10 Miracle Man (Bet Now: $7.50) should just about be ready to peak. He has finished third in both runs this time, the latest coming in the Neurological race from four weeks ago when attempting to lead all the way and he gave a decent enough kick from in front. Just felt the pinch late. Think he’s better with a sit, so if that eventuates, he’ll be dangerous.
A step up in trip looks a good move for the veteran 9 Mad Brad (Bet Now: $23.00). He was a month between runs when racing over 1000m, back in trip, two weeks ago, and just found them too sharp behind Lockroy. His best form is around this distance range and while I doubt he wins, he’s one of those runners who could bob up, so I’d be including him in multiples.
Race 9. (19:00) Vale Beaux Art Handicap (1MW) 1600m
5 Nordic King (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Magnus for the Adam Durrant stable who was a notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1400m here a few weeks ago and the market got it right as he sat worse than midfield with cover and looked to travel well but as soon as pressure was applied, he found nothing and just plugged away to beat only four runners home. Talent has been shown in the past. Just a little while since we have seen it, which is a concern. One more chance off the back of a decent trial win.
1 Deception Game (Bet Now: $7.50) can bounce back. Adam Durrant trains this gelding, who was an impressive winner over the mile two back before racing at that track/distance again three weeks ago where he was back and wide, never really in the contest behind Fred Dag in a bit of a forgive run. He’s better than that and hopefully can sit a touch closer in the run this time around.
Want to give 10 Marabel (Bet Now: $27.00) another look. Cliff Green trains this mare, who was specked at odds when racing at this track/distance three weeks ago but was stuck wide no cover for the trip and that hard run saw her a beaten horse at the top of the straight. Run prior was a beauty so if she gets better luck this time around, convinced she’ll run a positive race.
