Group l racing returns to Rosehill this Saturday where we will see a crack bunch of fillies and mares do battle in the Coolmore Classic (1500m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:15) Catanach's Handicap (82) 1900m
Fourth up, I reckon 4 Sizzling Bullet (Bet Now: $9.00) is just about ready to do something here. He comes through the Emperor’s Way/Almost Court race at Randwick where Parr had him tucked in behind the speed and he looked to travel well throughout but just couldn’t quite go on with it and had to settle for fourth. That form just reads so well for this.
8 Tamarack (Bet Now: $5.00) is racing in career best form at the moment for the Joe Pride team. Produced an electric finish to win two back at Canterbury before racing over the 2000m at Randwick and jut finding one better in Just Shine. Almost Court franked that form with a Canberra Cup win on Sunday so that reads well for this.
11 Marman (Bet Now: $26.00) produced a barnstorming finale to win two back over 1400m at Newcastle before racing over the mile at the same track and the tempo just didn’t suit him at all when a close up fourth to Sacred Edge. Up to 1900m does suit this David Atkins runners and the stable is low flying at the moment.
Race 2. (12:55) Harrolds Sky High Stakes 2000m
2 Libran (Bet Now: $3.10) for me. He had trialled up well behind the great mare Winx prior to resuming behind her in the Chipping Norton and for a 3200m horse, he ran about as well as expected behind the stablemate, finishing fourth, eight lengths away. He scored a barnstorming win second up last prep and looks primed to do something similar.
I reckon this is D-Day for 6 Stampede (Bet Now: $3.20). Two runs back have been just fair. First up in the Apollo he was part of that warp speed in front and tired late before chasing the speed in the Chipping Norton and dropping out. Third up at 2000m, he should get a relatively soft lead. On his best form, he goes close. I’ll just watch him.
What you see is what you get with 1 Who Shot Thebarman (Bet Now: $11.00). He has been a grand campaigner for the Waller camp for a number of years now and he will run well again for sure. Didn’t think his resumption behind Winx was all that bad. Obviously the mile was short of his ideal trip but I thought his last 150m behind the champion was good. 2000m ideal and given his record, he’s beautifully in at the weights.
Race 3. (13:30) Canadian Club Magic Night Stakes 1200m
Sticking with 1 Sunlight (Bet Now: $1.40). Not subscribing to the theory that Estijaab wins the Silver Slipper if she doesn’t cop pressure. The 600m middle section of the race, there was only 0.10 seconds difference, so it wasn’t as if Sunlight was put to sleep. She was made to run and she finished best. She’ll improve off that for sure and is a proven 1200m horse.
10 Cristobal (Bet Now: $15.00) is a James Cummings trained filly who had trialled up well prior to debuting over 1100m here at the midweeks on Feb 28 where I thought Tye Angland gave the filly a sweet steer just off the pace and that proved to be the difference between winning and losing, beating Miss Fabulass, who I think is a Group l winner in waiting for the Spring, so I am confident that form will hold up well.
8 Sweet Ava (Bet Now: $13.00) had won a trial prior to resuming in the Sweet Embrace where nothing really went right for the daughter of Snitzel but her effort was still more than sound behind Seabrook, who I think is number two for the Slipper in regards to fillies behind Estijaab. 1200m on her home track looks ideal.
Race 4. (14:10) Cafe Culture + Insitu Pago Pago Stakes 1200m
I think with normal luck this will be a barrier trial for 1 Written By (Bet Now: $1.85). He was supposed to trial on Tuesday but with that washed out, he’ll trial for prizemoney. His Blue Diamond win was outstanding, sitting on speed and then dashing right away late. Yes, I don’t think on the day he beat much, but you could say the same about several leading Slipper chances. Done most of his trackwork the Sydney way so first race clockwise won’t be an excuse.
5 Spin (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a lovely type for the Snowden camp who should improve off the resumption, which came in the Syline where I thought he was excellent in defeat behind Santos, cutting back to the worst part of the track and just missing. That form…I don’t know, but the trial prior, you won’t see much better.
10 Toulouse (Bet Now: $46.00) is a David Payne trained colt who resumed in the Pierro Plate behind Santos and though he never really looked likely, he stuck on okay and was only beaten 4.7L. I think he’ll develop into a Sires/Champagne horse because I think they are too sharp for him here, but if they overdo it on speed, look out for him.
Race 5. (14:50) chweppes Maurice McCarten Stakes 1100m
7 Latin Boy (Bet Now: $14.00) is an absolute beauty for the Richard Freedman camp and he deserves a crack at blacktype level. Heavily backed when resuming over 900m at Newcastle last Friday and the punters got it spot on as he dashed away with the big weight and won impressively. Gets really good weight relief here and up to 1100m ideal.
12 Sprightly Lass (Bet Now: $5.00) didn’t have a trial/jump out prior to resuming over the 955m at the Valley and that pretty much was a barrier trial for the Hawkes mare. She was in complete control throughout under Dwayne Dunn and won with plenty in reserve. If she can stretch her brilliance to 1100m at this level, she’ll go very close.
Not sure he can win, but for exotics and value, I’d include 11 Akasaki (Bet Now: $17.00). He only comes off a last start win at Quirindi, but keep in mind he had the 60.5kg and was three/four wide no cover for the trip, yet still ran blistering time and near sub 32 for the final 600m. Tumbles in weight, proven city performer, albeit not at this level, and handles all conditions. I’ll definitely have something each way.
Race 6. (15:30) Phar Lap Stakes 1500m
6 Octabello (Bet Now: $27.00) on top for me. Mick Price trains this colt, who had a solid Spring Carnival but really had no luck for the most part. He resumes here with two jumps out and a trial under the belt, whereas last prep he had one jump out and one trial, so that tells me he’s wound up to win first up.
1 Holy Snow (Bet Now: $8.50) a clear threat. Mick Price trains this colt, who resumed with a barnstorming win in the Autumn Stakes prior to racing in the Australian Guineas where he just got too far back and the tempo was hot throughout, which probably didn’t suit him I felt behind Grunt. Third up at 1500m, he has the form on the board, and always respect the stable when they travel.
5 Renewal (Bet Now: $6.50) looks a promising youngster for the Hawkes camp. He ran at the midweeks here a couple of weeks back where he was heavily backed to win the race and under Avdulla, the gelding proved too good. Toughest test to date here for sure but he looks very likeable and has always showed blacktype promise.
Race 7. (16:10) Coolmore Classic 1500m
1 Dixie Blossoms (Bet Now: $7.50) deserves her Group l and I think she gets one of her best chances here. Ron Quinton has put more work into her for early on in the prep, as we saw in the trials, which left her wound up to win her second Guy Walter and she was dominant in doing so. Slaughtered in the Coolmore last year when hard in the market. Hopefully the reverse happens.
I’m very wary of 7 Egg Tart (Bet Now: $5.00). That little bit of moisture in the track from the rain this week will be absolutely perfect for her. Loved her resumption in the Liverpool Cup behind Crack Me Up, clocking the third fastest final 600m of the meeting despite being held up for most of it. Looks to have come back super and she gets a great chance here. I’ll be backing her.
2 Silent Sedition (Bet Now: $9.50) arguably should have won this race last year and I think she is primed to go one better. Flat resumption behind Prussian Vixen in the Bellmaine before she went to the Mannerism, where she was an unbelievable drifter in betting, but the blinkers went on first time and they sharpened her up because she was outstanding, albeit she was gifted a soft lead. Third up at 1500m looks an ideal recipe for success. I think if you divide your stake between Dixie, Egg Tart and this girl, you should be collecting.
Race 8. (16:50) Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes 1500m
I’m on the 2 Tom Melbourne (Bet Now: $4.50) train. Only been on once since he joined Chris Waller and that was in the Railway last prep where he just missed albeit having every chance. Love what I have seen from him at the two trials, and really, his overall speed figures are just far superior to anything engaged, and keep in mind he should have won fresh last prep.
3 Comin’ Through (Bet Now: $3.80) had his first run as a gelding in the Apollo and I thought his effort, outside Global Glamour, was the best of the race. Got back, probably too far back, but loved the way he closed off out wide when a close up third to Endless Drama. He has plenty of room to improve and he will love the rise to the Rosehill 1500m.
He’s rising significantly in grade but all you can do is win and that is what 7 Cellarman (Bet Now: $6.00) has done this time in, winning his past three. The key factor in each of the wins is the fact the tempo has been slow and he has had the cuddle behind the tempo and had had last say. I think if that can happen here, he’ll run a beauty once again.
Race 9. (17:30) Tab.com.au Handicap (89) 1350m
6 Wayanka (Bet Now: $13.00) is an Encosta De Lago gelding that resumes for the Chris Waller yard. He had a pretty solid Winter/Spring prep, winning a couple of races, two of which came over 1400m here. Comes here off the back of just one soft 900m trial behind Music Magnate but he is a good fresh horse and loves Rosehill.
14 Lovani (Bet Now: $6.00) is a former Robert Smerdon mare that had her first run for Brad Widdup a fortnight back at Randwick over 1200m in the race won by Osborne Bulls and I thought her effort was quite good considering that 1200m is well short of her best distance and she is usually a mare that takes a run or two find her best. Up to 1350m ideal and is a live chance
13 Peacock (Bet Now: $13.00) is a bludger but this is the sort of race he could easily fire in. Resumed in the Osborne Bulls race mentioned above and stuck on okay without really looking likely. had trialled well prior to that resumption and his best racing does come second up, so perhaps give him an outside winning chance.
