Queensland metro racing this Saturday heads to the Gold Coast for a pretty strong nine race card. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out 1.5 metres from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:02) Lion Food Services Plate (Class 3) 900m
Pretty keen here on 11 Adoradancer (Bet Now: $5.00). This filly is resuming for the Barry Lockwood team who hasn’t raced since November 4 over the 1350m at Doomben where she was heavily backed but just felt the pinch late when fifth to Miss Miao. Been given a good break and thought her trial win at Deagon was excellent. Looks ready to go.
8 The Real Boss (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Tony Sears trained three year old colt who is two for two so far in his career. Debuted with an electric win over 1000m on his home track at Toowoomba before resuming over 800m at Ipswich and winning as if it was a barrier trial. Big tick there was that it was on a heavy track, which will help his cause here.
9 Mediterranean (Bet Now: $4.00) is the big watch here. Former Team Snowden galloper making his Queensland debut for the Matty Dunn team. On his best form, he’d spank these, but as to where he is at, I’m not sure. In saying that, the trials leading up to his resumption have been quite good to the eye. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 2. (13:42) McCain Foods Cup (80) 2200m
Keen on 1 Exoteric (Bet Now: $5.50). Was on his back a fortnight back over the 2040m at Doomben where I thought Michael Cahill gave him every chance in the run but just found Morendi too tough and too good. That horse came out and won last Saturday, so the form does read well for this and is one for one at the track.
2 Xebec (Bet Now: $3.00) is on the seven day back up for the Chris Waller team after racing over 2200m last Saturday at Doomben where he ran along on speed under Jeff Lloyd, leading by 6+ lengths at one stage. Had every right to throw it in last 400m but he toughed it out and it was only the bob of the head that beat him. Back to this level, home track, should take some beating.
13 Quiero (Bet Now: $14.00) is a progressive gelding for the Tony Sears camp who had his first crack beyond a mile last time out over the 2040m at Doomben and I thought he measured up quite nicely after setting a pretty decent tempo in front, only feeling the pinch late. He should only improve off that and prove hard to run down.
Race 3. (14:22) Cracker Barrel Handicap (70) 1300m
I think 6 Lay Down The Law (Bet Now: $19.00) is a great bet here. David Pfieffer trains this ten year old, who is racing really well at the moment despite his age. He ran over 1250m at Canterbury last time out and I thought he stuck on really well in defeat behind Catesby. He is a swimmer so any give in the track is ideal and up to 1300m on the big track is a tick.
9 Il Riccio (Bet Now: $3.70) has always had a bit of a boom on him for the Tony Gollan camp and while he probably won’t live up to that hype, he certainly is talented. Bolted up last start at the Sunny Coast, leading all the way to win by four in an okay time relative to the day. Unknown on wet ground but on breeding he should be okay.
14 Super Tonic (Bet Now: $27.00) is an interesting runner. Brett Bellamy trains this mare, who won the preview of the Northern Rivers Country Championship Qualifier at Coffs Harbour and she was dominant in winning that, tucking in behind the speed and letting down strongly when getting the split. Handles a rain affected track, hard fit and in form.
Race 4. (15:02) Simplot Food Services Handicap 1800m
1 Epic Rant (Bet Now: $4.40) was nearly a month between runs when racing over the 1700m at Ipswich last Wednesday and I reckon that lack of hard race fitness just told late. Attempted to lead all the way, gave a good kick but just petered late when second to Ponytales. Has that hard run under the belt now, so 1800m no issue.
9 Ponytales (Bet Now: $6.00) won that race mentioned above and I thought it was a clever ride from Jim Byrne. He got moving before the turn and got the fav under pressure, knowing he was a little while between runs and he was on the stronger horse, and so it proved late as he drew clear. Not sure he can beat Epic Rant again but should run well.
12 Showy Lady (Bet Now: $15.00) is a progressive filly for the Les Ross yard who came with a well timed run under Taylor Marshall to grab them late for an impressive maiden win at start three. Was 1400 back to 1300 that meeting and she does seem like a horse who will appreciate a trip so 1800m is ideal for her.
Race 5. (15:42) Moco Food Services Gold Coast Stakes 1800m
6 Capetown Hussey (Bet Now: $3.70) looks well suited to win here third up. This mare was hard in the market a fortnight back in the Members Cup at Doomben and she tried very hard from off the pace but just didn’t have the momentum that Glendara had and I think that was the main difference. Ran well up to 2000m last prep, so 1800m no issue and looks ready to peak.
8 Doubt Defying (Bet Now: $3.40) was over a month between runs when racing over the mile at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back and aided by a lovely ride near the pace from Boris Thornton, he proved far too good for his rivals. Bred to swim, so a rain affected track no issue and though untried beyond a mile, I think it’ll be okay.
10 War Baby (Bet Now: $26.00) is the knockout chance. Kelvin Hickmott has this mare flying. Eye catching resumption at Doomben behind My Little Flicka before racing over 1300m here last Saturday on a bog when proving far too good, lapping up the conditions to win impressively over a field that had depth to it. Up to 1800m ideal and has a stack of upside.
Race 6. (16:22) QTIS 2YO Jewel 1200m
Hard to look away from 9 Plumaro (Bet Now: $2.25). Kevin Kemp has a really good two year old on his hands here. Her win a fortnight back over 1200m at Doomben was outstanding because she spotted them an impossible start but once she put her mind to it and got clear air, gee she put them away and won well. Gold Coast 1200m looks perfect.
3 Mishani Hustler (Bet Now: $4.50) is a well bred colt for Ben Currie who was a drifter in betting when debuting at Doomben on Feb 10 but under Jeff Lloyd, the son of Exceedingly Good found plenty in the straight and clung on to beat Plumaro, who franked the form three weeks later. Really good effort to win on debut at six furlongs, and is the lone horse to beat Plumaro, so I’ll be respecting him here.
14 Sassy Style (Bet Now: $26.00) is a three start maiden for the Les Ross team but I think she can run well here. She ran on a heavy track over 1000m at Ipwsich a couple of Wednesdays back and worked home strongly late when second to Aileach. I don’t think 1200m will be an issue, stable flying and so is Taylor Marshall.
Race 7. (17:02) QTIS 3YO Jewel 1200m
1 Umberto (Bet Now: $9.50) on top for me. Was keen on this horse a couple of Sunday’s at the Sunny Coast but I reckon a hard mile at the Sunny Coast, the big track, wasn’t ideal and he just plugged away to run third to Love And Rock It. I think back to the Gold Coast 1200m will really suit and I like him against this lot.
11 Basara (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Tony Sears trained filly who is two weeks between runs since racing over the 1110m at Doomben where she attempted to lead all the way under Michael Cahill and she gave a good kick but just tired late when third to Johnny Whitesox. Run prior behind Snitz was a beauty and that reads well for this.
I think 8 Sista Act (Bet Now: $6.50) could be a knockout at odds. This girl was six weeks between runs when racing at Warwick last week and she just had to chase a hot speed throughout which left her gassed at the end when fourth t Conquering Lass. Handles wet ground, fitter and senior jock back on board.
Race 8. (17:37) Carbine Club Of Queensland Goldmarket 1200m
I think David Pfieffer has placed 7 Pelethronius (Bet Now: $12.00) perfectly here. 1550 back to 1200 isn’t ideal but with a likely wet track, he should take some beating. He ran over the 1550m at Canterbury last time out and he wasn’t given much hope by the ride, sitting wide throughout when fifth to Quick Defence. Hard 1200m on rain affected ground will suit.
4 Snitzkraft (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented son of Snitzel that resumes for the Wood/Gesler team. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Sprint where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick when second to star mare Viddora. Trialled up in early February and was impressive there but hasn’t been sighted since. Betting will be the guide, but on form, rates highly.
14 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Scott Morrisey trained gelding that is first up here. He was a very consistent performer during the Spring/Summer, winning several races, including his last run last prep when bolting up over 1800m here. 1200m is short of his best, but he does sprint well fresh, handles all conditions and is trained on the track.
Race 9. (18:15) Perfect Italiano Plate (Class 6) 1400m
Hard to look away from 7 Plucky Girl (Bet Now: $4.20), who is in career best form for the Toby Edmonds camp. This mare has won impressively at her past two, both coming at this track/distance, the latest seeing her win by nearly four lengths under Glen Colless. Clearly more depth here, but she runs time, has the right racing pattern and loves racing on her home track.
16 Sea The Sparkle (Bet Now: $5.00) is flying and I think a win is nearby. Two runs back at Doomben over the 1200m and 1350m respectively have been excellent, both starts closing off powerfully with purpose from the back. She’ll love the rise to a hard 1400m and loves any cut in the ground, plus is weighted superbly.
8 Cogliere (Bet Now: $19.00) had his first run as a gelding in the Mid North Coast Qualifier for the Country Championships and I thought his effort from the back was okay without jumping up and down behind Victorem, one of the leading chances for the final, so that form reads very well for this, he is a two time second up winner and has won on soft ground.
