A strong eight race meeting has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday where it is Thousand Guineas Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:18) Purslowe & Chipper Funerals Handicap 1000m
Back Me: Tricky race but I think the safe option is 1 How To Fly (Bet Now: $2.45). This Adam Durrant trained filly is pretty bomb proof and has built up a pretty impressive record. She is four weeks between runs since winning at this track/distance when given a peach by Pike just off the pace before getting the split and dashing clear. Pike remains on and should park off a likely good speed.
3 Saturia (Bet Now: $8.50) finished third in that race mentioned above that How To Fly saluted in and his effort on speed was tidy. He ran over the 1100m here a fortnight back and took cover, which isn’t his go at all when fifth to Get The Vibe. Much better when he is on speed and rolling so if that eventuates, he’ll run well.
7 Melros Beach (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Brett Pope trained filly who has had two runs back from a spell, both down the straight at Pinjarra. Finished off okay for third when resuming before finishing best in a driving go to break the maiden status next time out. Clearly more depth here, but draws an ideal gate, hard fit and in form.
Race 2. (16:58) Crown Towers Handicap (78+) 1000m
3 Gee Boss (Bet Now: $2.40) is five weeks between runs for the Michael Lane team since getting the bob in to win down the straight at Pinjarra on Feb 10 in a driving go to the peg. He does tend to race best on the fresh side and his recent trial at Bunbury was outstanding when winning that by a space in fast time. Just has to overcome the sticky draw.
2 Pinzu (Bet Now: $16.00) is a talented miler that resumes for the Adam Durrant yard. His Winter/Spring prep was very good, with a couple of wins and several placings next to his name in some pretty tidy races. 1000m clearly short of his best, but he does go well first up and if they go hard in front, he’ll be strongest late.
8 More Aces (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Jim Taylor trained sprinter who is three weeks between runs since sitting on speed over 1200m here where he took the lead and kicked hard but was outgunned late by the in form Star Glitter. I think back to 1000m fresh is ideal, senior jock back on, should be on speed, rolling and giving a great sight.
Race 3. (17:33) Corpex Consulting Supremacy Stakes 1000m
5 Agent Pippa (Bet Now: $2.05), if she overcomes the gate, should be winning. Very nice looking filly for the Pearce camp that is first up after debuting at this track/distance back in October when showing dazzling sustained speed to lead throughout, win and smash the clock in the process. Trialled up brilliantly last week at Belmont and appears ready to go.
7 Princess Pierro (Bet Now: $7.50) finished second to Agent Pippa in that race mentioned above before being tipped out. She then resumed on Jan 27 when running a game second to the above average filly Kiss The Breeze before again being tipped out. Trialled up well enough at Belmont last week to suggest she’s ready to go.
4 Party Night (Bet Now: $23.00) sat on speed over 1100m here two weeks ago and she looked to travel well throughout, giving a pretty solid kick under Ryan Hill but the last 100m just saw her out when third to Assetro. Back to 1000m looks ideal and she should get the lovely cart over via Agent Pippa. Knockout chance.
Race 4. (18:10) Tabtouch Handicap (1MW) 1200m
Happy to be with 5 Klondike Kenny (Bet Now: $7.00). Brett Pope trains this gelding, who is six weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he closed off hard from the back to run third to Royal Missile, who has franked the form since with a win and a Stakes placing. This horse normally needs a run when fresh, but he has residual fitness.
11 Bon Voyage (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Testa Rossa for Team Williams who is four weeks between runs since racing against his own age over the 1000m here when settling off the pace and chasing hard all the way when fourth to How To Fly. The run prior behind Dutch Spy was a beauty and on that effort, he can certainly beat these.
4 Enchanted Dream (Bet Now: $4.80) is the big query for mine. Four year old mare trained by the Pearce camp who is back racing after a two run Winter prep where she was disappointing in both runs. Has had two trials to prepare for her return, and really, if she showed any glimpse of her three year old form here, she’d be winning.
Race 5. (18:50) Good Friday Raceday Handicap (1MW) 1600m
9 Rogan Scent (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. Fred Kersley trains this lightly raced mare, who won well two back at this track/distance before stepping back to 1500m where she chased hard and tried to pick up the leader/winner but it was too tough and too good on the line. I think back up to the mile suits and should get a cold ride from the gate.
13 Spin On Command (Bet Now: $2.70) is a lightly raced daughter of Hard Spun who is on the quick back up after leading all the way over 1800m here last Wednesday where Pike controlled things beautifully on speed and the four year old mare fought hard in the straight when challenged for a narrow but gritty win. I think they should adopt similar tactics because she’s hard fit, in form and Pike does remain on.
3 Wonorg (Bet Now: $81.00) brings provincial form to town but I think he could represent some value here. He bungled the start badly last time out over the Esperance mile and that probably took the stuffing out of him when fourth to Jimmy Rapid, beaten three lengths. Should do no work from the gate and Autier, who won that race, jumps on.
Race 6. (19:30) Guinness Handicap (66+) 2100m
It’s quite remarkable the transformation of 4 Scooner (Bet Now: $5.00) for Simon Miller. This horse was a cat who didn’t want to win. Fast forward to now and he’s a winner over 2000m at Pinjarra before scoring a dominant win in the Esperance Cup a couple of Sundays back. Now his confidence is high, he deserves another crack in town.
2 At The Ready (Bet Now: $5.00) is two weeks between runs for the Adam Durrant stable since racing over the 2200m where he got back and held up, plus wanted to lay in, but despite all that, his finale was really good behind Couleur Bizarre, beaten a couple of lengths. Pike remains on and the depth this time around is nowhere near as strong.
11 Hakuna Matata (Bet Now: $31.00) is on the quick back up after sitting on speed over 2200m at Bunbury on Sunday where Lucy Warwick had the gelding appearing to travel well near the front and he gave his usual kick but just couldn’t finish it off when a narrow third to Plays The Game. Autier jumps on and he is one of the best in WA at lifting a bludger home, which this horse is.
Race 7. (20:05) Schweppes Ascot 1000 Guineas 1800m
Ripping Thousand Guineas. Going with the best horse in the race, which for mine is 2 Showcase (Bet Now: $2.90). She, like most here, comes through the Challenge Stakes a fortnight back and she was clearly the unlucky runner of the lot, getting badly held up when appearing to have plenty to offer. Think she can turn the tables on Private Dancer and win.
1 Private Dancer (Bet Now: $3.00) was a deserving winner of the race mentioned above. She had the dream run and got the split at the right time to build up momentum and get the win. Problem for her and maintaining a margin over Showcase is that she draws outside Showcase, so will most likely be behind her.
10 Western Magic (Bet Now: $18.00) shouldn’t be underestimated. She might have only broke the maiden tag last Wednesday over 1500m here, but the win was dominant and the time she ran stacked up really well relative to the meeting. On that run, she’ll have no issue with 1800m and draws a lovely gate.
Race 8. (20:40) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (72+) 1400m
8 Mulga (Bet Now: $6.50) looks the clear knockout chance. He is four weeks between runs since racing over the mile here where he really should have won but just had no luck in the straight when appearing to be bolting when fourth to Western Temple. Does race well on the fresh side and should get a lovely run off the pace.
I’m a sucker for pain which is why I’m including 6 My Grace (Bet Now: $4.60) again. Thought she looked a good thing when racing here a fortnight back at this track/distance and she seemingly had her chance when second to Sweet Ora but I think conditions here will suit her better. Should get the perfect drag up via Nelson’s Flight and have last look.
11 Nelson’s Flight (Bet Now: $7.00) absolutely bolted up over 1500m here two weeks ago. Lucy had the horse nearly five lengths in front at one stage but the horse appeared to travel very sweetly in the run and he never looked like getting beat despite getting tired late. Back to 1400m ideal, should lead and take some beating.
