Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville this Saturday where it is Birthday Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:15) James Boags Premium Handicap (70) 1200m
3 Bris Vegas (Bet Now: $2.05) does look the obvious way to go. Ryan Balfour trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since attempting to lead all the way over 1300m on the Parks track where he gave a tremendous kick and did look home but the class and brilliance of Scarecrow kicked in and he proved too good. Looks to get a lovely run in transit and Jamie Kah steers.
1 Modulate (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented son of Ambidexter for Richard Jolly who is five weeks between runs since toughing it out with purpose to record a very strong win over the 1500m at Gawler (Metro) on a soft track, something which he didn’t seem to thrive on. Break between runs is the query, but who am I to doubt the stable.
6 Unscopeable (Bet Now: $13.00) is a handy daughter of Duporth that resumes for the Chris Bieg team. This girl hasn’t raced since late late October when finishing down the track behind the above average Tony McEvoy galloper Paseeto. Trialled up okay a couple of weeks back, she is a first up winner and saves her best for the course proper.
Race 2. (13:51) Holdfast Insurance Plate 1100m
9 Double Denman (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Tony McEvoy trained youngster that comes through the More Than Exceed race. He showed good early speed under Paul Gatt to be up on speed and he gave a good kick but just died on the run when running third. Another with natural upside and in the right stable when it comes to juveniles.
10 Strategic Agenda (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Strategic filly who is six weeks between runs since debuting at Gawler (Metro) where she sat 1/1 in the run and tried hard but just no match for the first two when third to Tawdeen. Early market support to suggest she has come on from that outing, she draws a sweet gate and Holder remains on.
8 King Artie (Bet Now: $11.00) is an Artie Schiller colt on debut for the Peter Hardacre team. This bloke hasn’t been seen at the trials, but on breeding, he should come to hand early and the fact he debuts in town suggests to me that the stable might have an opinion of this horse, and Declan Bates comes over for the ride.
Race 3. (14:26) Quayclean Maiden Plate 1100m
7 Caribbean Wonder (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Nick Smart trained colt who has some pretty good form next to his name. He comes off a last start sixth in a Ballarat maiden where he sat on speed and tried hard but just petered out of it late. This looks a significant drop in depth for the son of Barbados and with luck running, he should take some holding out.
3 Moon Spinner (Bet Now: $2.10) is a Sepoy gelding on debut for the Tony McEvoy yard. This bloke has only had the one public trial, which was on January 29 at Geelong when fifth to Jumper Girl. Bred to be a really good one but being four years of age, he has obviously had issues to be having his first start now. Still, have to respect the stable and I’ll be monitoring the market and seeing what it does.
13 Loves Edge (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Peter Hardacre filly who looks hard to beat. Daughter of Foxwedge that resumed last week at Ararat and as we know that track does suit those on speed. She settled off the speed and took a while to get going but her last 150m was excellent when a close up second to Time For Tea. Think she might want 1200m, but if they go hard here, she’ll be very strong late.
Race 4. (15:01) UBET Adelaide Cup March 12 Handicap 1200m
6 Benz (Bet Now: $3.10) looks the way to go. Gordon Richards trains this four year old, who ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought, despite getting held up a touch, he had his chance to get the job done but Counter Pulse proved too tough on the day. Third up now, so this is D-Day for mine.
3 Go The Journey (Bet Now: $6.00) is an absolute beauty for the Richard Jolly team. He hasn’t raced for five weeks since leading throughout to score a narrow but impressive win at Gawler (Metro). Proven weight carrier who looks to map super here on speed, he is a noted first up performer and he has a tidy record on the course proper.
5 Counter Pulse (Bet Now: $12.00) is real gutsy performer for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard who toughed it out strongly to win at this track/distance two weeks ago, edging out Benz in a really close go to the line. He has been around the mark for a while now but it was really pleasing to see him put a win on the board.
Race 5. (15:38) Medallion Homes Handicap (70) 2035m
9 Euroman (Bet Now: $3.70) for me. Darren Weir trained this stayer, who is getting better and better with each run. Thought Yendall gave him a peach last time out at Ballarat, trucking up nicely in the run before peeling out and despite taking an eternity to let down, he got there in the end, albeit last stride. Back to 2000m some concern, but I’ll trust the stable.
7 Grumpy Guru (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Dion Koch trained galloper who is racing really well but just needed to put the win on the board, and it came last time out over 1700m at Gawler with some help from a ripping steer by Jason Holder. Has failed previously at the 2000m but he seems a much better horse now to tackle it.
4 Sagaab (Bet Now: $7.00) is absolutely flying at the moment for Travis Doudle. He ran over the 1800m here a fortnight back and worked home strongly with purpose from near last to run third to Ace Attack, beaten 2.5L. 2000m is a stretch for him on previous form, but the way he is racing now, it should be no drama.
Race 6. (16:11) Holdfast Insurance Birthday Cup 2035m
4 Exalted Lightning (Bet Now: $5.00) for me in what looks a really solid edition of the Birthday Cup. This bloke is low flying for Grant Young, who ran in the Strathalbyn Cup a tick under a fortnight back where I thought Pannell gave the horse every chance but the 5kg weight swing against the eventual winner Fantastic Magic was the difference. Confident he can go one better.
6 Addison (Bet Now: $5.00) was a good thing I thought when racing at the Flemington 2000m four weeks back but gee she was a major flop behind One For Later, with the mare coming off the bit a fair way out and never looking likely. Her best would see her go close. I think I’ll just watch her at this stage unless there is market support.
3 Dance Of Heroes (Bet Now: $15.00) is a very interesting runner here. Former David Vandyke runner making his SA debut for Grant Young, and we know this guy can improve these tried horses a few lengths. Hasn’t raced since January 24 over 1800m at the Gold Coast when running fifth to Exoteric. Good record at 2000m, and the fact he does have his first start at this trip tells me he’s had plenty of work put in.
Race 7. (16:56) Hughes Limousines Handicap (70) 1600m
9 Triple Spec (Bet Now: $10.00) is a mare that is low flying at the moment for the Stuart Padman team. She has won two for two this time in, both coming at Strathalbyn over 1200m and 1300m respectively, both times sitting off pace and coming with a well timed run under Shane Cahill. Don’t think the rise in trip/grade will be an issue, she has upside and happy to be with her.
7 Daktari (Bet Now: $6.00) is a lightly raced seven year old trained by Dennis O’Leary who ran over the mile at Strathalbyn last start where he sat on speed under Sairyn Fawke and he gave a good kick but judged on the run late when third to Hasta La Red. I think he will be more dynamic when ridden with cover. If that happens, he’s a threat.
3 Miss Joolia (Bet Now: $17.00) should always be respected, mainly because of the booming finish she can produce on occasion. Got a mike back last start at Bordertown but was very good late behind Rhythmatic. Just a little query at running the mile, but she does have that excellent change up speed late, something most of these don’t have.
Race 8. (17:36) The Junction Handicap (64) 1100m
3 Won Ball (Bet Now: $2.00) looks a great bet. Talented three year old for Darren Weir who is two for two. Electric turn of foot to win on debut at Geelong before going to Sandown where he did a bit of work on speed and was there to be beaten but he found plenty and won like the good horse I think he is. Stable always places them well when coming to Adelaide and they find a very winnable race.
2 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Darren Magro trained mare who is racing just so consistently at the moment. Just can’t crack it for a win. Thought it would come last time out at Gawler but she had to settle for another second, this time at the hands of Commanding Diva. Has run well on the course proper before and with a patient steer, she’ll be strong late.
They could go silly on speed here so keep an eye on 12 Vikings Reward (Bet Now: $9.00) for John Hyam and Jamie Kah. He resumed three weeks back on the Parks track over 1000m where he sat back off a fast speed before getting the split nearer the inside and dashing before running out of condition late when third to Iconic. Draws to get a lovely run and should improve off that.
