Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:32) Kitchen At Treasury Member Meal Handicap 1110m
2 She’s Choosie (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Greg Kilner trained filly who si three for three, and each time she has stepped out, gee sh has been impressive, albeit not beating much. Really good test here, but whenever the stable travel, especially to town, they should be respected enormously. This girl will look the winner. Last 100m will be her test.
5 Accomplish (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Michael Nolan trained youngster who was solid in betting when resuming here a fortnight back where he showed super early toe to lead them up and he gave a pretty solid kick but just couldn’t hold out Pinch Memory. Has the run under the belt now, so he should be stronger at the end.
7 Onward To Victory (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Ben Currie trained filly having her first start. Daughter of Dream Ahead on debut who has had one public trial, which came back in September last year on her home track at Toowoomba. Been kept on ice since and I’m sure she’s had a jump out or two to prepare. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 2. (14:07) Fat Noodle Lunar New Year Banquet Handicap (70) 1050m
If he is within range on the turn, 2 Siliqua (Bet Now: $14.00) should be beating this lot. Had no right to get as close as he did last time out at Ipswich, settling a mile off them in the five horse field and only went down by a stride, running just over 32 final 600m. If he is close enough on the turn, his speed will be too good for them.
5 Secret Mo (Bet Now: $3.70) is a talented son of Uncle Mo who is first up for the astute Lindsay Gough team. This bloke hasn’t raced since July when midfield behind Prioritise. Been given a really good break and has been tuned up with a pretty slick trial here last Tuesday, and for mine that should have him forward enough to run well.
Not really a long shot but third pick is 12 Now You See (Bet Now: $4.20), who resumed for Ben Currie. She is a speedy daughter of Magic Albert first up after an outstanding Spring campaign, which saw her win multiple races including one over the 1200m here. Goes well first up, likes a track with give, perfect gate and Fradd steers.
Race 3. (14:42) Fat Noodle Yum Cha Handicap 1050m
5 Alleviator (Bet Now: $3.80) on top but it’s a race I’m not confident about. This gelding trained by Toby Edmonds debuted on his home track over 900m where he gave them a galloping lesson in leading throughout. But that was a 900m maiden on his home track. 1050m at metro level on Saturday against some nice types is different gravy. But, he does look a likely type, he should and generally that is the place to be when there is give in the Doomben surface.
8 Setoga (Bet Now: $6.00) on top. Steve O’Dea trains this three year old, who kicked off his career with a two run prep mid last year at the Sunny Coast over 1000m, winning on debut before a gutsy third behind Jonzali. Looked sharp in a trial win here last Monday and to my eye is definitely forward enough to run well fresh.
10 Don’t Leave Me Out (Bet Now: $6.50) is a lightly raced Rothesay gelding for the Rob Heathcoate team who is just under five weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Ipswich and proving no match for Johnny Whitesox, who went on to run second a couple of weeks back here so that form reads well. Just has to handle the step up in depth.
Race 4. (15:17) Treasury Hotel Wedding Showcase Handicap 1630m
1 Torgersen (Bet Now: $1.95) just picks himself here. This bloke is low flying at the moment for the Chris Waller team. Huge run in defeat two back in the Sunshine Coast Cup behind Most Important before racing at Ipswich last Wednesday where he looked a good thing on paper and despite not being entirely happy around the tight track, he proved far too good for them. Confident he wins.
3 Brazen Moss (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since contesting the Sunny Coast Cup where he got a mile back off the pace but you had to like his finale, finishing off with real purpose behind Most Important. Tends to save his best for Doomben and he can definitely win this.
7 Boedea Negra (Bet Now: $21.00) hadn’t done much for a long time but he showed somewhat of a positive change of form in the race won by Torgersen mentioned above. Attempted to lead all the way and gave a really solid kick but just ran out puff late. That was his first run in near seven weeks, so he should come on from that.
Race 5. (15:52) The Highway Zone Casino Exclusive Car Jackpot Plate (Class 3) 1630m
14 Sweet Adaline (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Team Guy trained mare who is going really well at the moment. Just needs to put a win on the board. She ran over the mile at Ipswich last time out where she got back near last in the run but worked home with purpose late when fourth to the talented Shield Wall. If she can sit that touch closer in the run, she’ll take some beating.
I think 3 Mustarrid (Bet Now: $3.40) is a definite danger. Ran over the 1350m here last Saturday and closed off well late. Just ran out of condition final 100m when fifth to Cornrow. Love that he is backing up in a week, obviously pleasing the stable, he draws well and they get Lloyd steering, so he has a few things going for him.
5 Spiral (Bet Now: $11.00) is a horse who won’t mind some give in the track. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and worked home well from off the pace behind Maybe Even you, beaten just under two lengths. He is one horse who doesn’t mind a track with give in it and if he is close enough on the turn, he’s certainly good enough to win.
Race 6. (16:33) Treasury Brisbane's Fast Finish Slots Tournament Handicap (80) 1200m
17 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $8.50) on top. Toby Edmonds trains this gelding who is racing really well at the moment. He is three weeks between runs since attempting to lead all the way over 1200m at the Sunny Coast and he gave a really good kick under Jeff Lloyd, but just found Bergerac too good on the line. Sunny Coast 1200m and Doomben 1200m are different beasts. The latter suits this hose.
6 Publishing Power (Bet Now: $2.40) is on the quick back up for the Ben Currie team after bolting up on his home track at Toowoomba last Friday where he looked an absolute moral and won accordingly, bolting up to win by five lengths and running great time relative to the meeting. Run prior in town was disappointing but happy to give him another look.
5 Muraqaba (Bet Now: $8.50) is a huge watch for me. Former Team Cummings galloper now with Lindsay Hatch. Off his Sydney form, and the horses he ran around, he’d be winning this. Just a little query at the 1200m first up, but he is a noted fresh performer, and the stable can get them to fire at their resumption.
Race 7. (17:17) Treasury Brisbane's Cokctails & Canapes In The Park Event Handicap (75) 2030m
7 Shield Wall (Bet Now: $5.00) is a mare who for Chris Waller who had been bursting to win a race for some time and it finally came last time out at Ipwsich. Took an age to wind up under Fradd but her last furlong was excellent as she pulled clear late. This looks an ideal race for her, she’s on the up and does have change up speed.
5 Kirini (Bet Now: $3.20) looks a definite threat. This mare looked poorly suited when racing over the 2200m here four weeks back and the market reacted, getting her out to nearly $5 after opening $2.50. She got a mile back and ran on okay but not well enough with the 58.5kg. That is a concern again, but her quality will carry her a long way.
Getting some generous odds about noted mudlark 4 Perilous Love (Bet Now: $11.00). I thought her win here a fortnight back on the bog was very good. Had to make a run from around 1000m out and was under pressure but she kept finding and finished best. The weight rise is the reason for the good odds, but she has carried weight successfully before.
Race 8. (17:53) Lunar New Year @ Treasury Brisbane Handicap 1110m
7 Tyzone (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute beauty. North Queensland star for the Roy Chillemi team who resumed on a bog at Cairns over the 950m but the wet track didn’t bother him as he bolted up and continued his wonderful winning strike rate off eleven from sixteen. Two from three second up and won his lone start here. Ticks plenty of boxes.
1 Supreme Effort (Bet Now: $4.60) makes another trip north and more often than not, every time he does, he goes away with a win. Three runs back have been super. Just lacking that final killer blow to win a blacktype level. Has to carry a decent weight here, but draws to get a lovely run and D Browne gets on so well with him.
4 Tisano Tomso (Bet Now: $7.50) would be better suited on a bog but he can be effective on firmer footing. He got the wet track a fortnight back here when well backed and he absolutely bolted in under Paul Hammersley. Should get a similar run to the one he got in that win, and he isn’t badly treated at the weights.
Race 9. (18:30) Treasury Brisbane's Art Of The palate Presented By Penfolds Plate (Class 6) 1350m
This could well be a case of how far 3 Fortensky (Bet Now: $3.60). Beautifully placed by Chris Waller and you’d only think bad luck beats him. Ran over 1200m at Canterbury last time out where he was hard in the market and the punters got it right as he sat on speed and toughed it out strongly to get the job done. Up to 1350m on the bigger track is perfect, and he drops big time in depth.
15 Let’s Party Marty (Bet Now: $6.50) is a progressive type for the David Vandyke team who resumed over 1200m at Ipswich on January 31 where he looked an absolute moral hence the $1.28 quote and he won accordingly despite not really being entirely happy racing around the tight track. Think he’ll be better suited here and has upside.
12 Prioritise…(Bet Now: $7.50) yep, I’ll need to pray 50 Hail Mary’s, but with a likely hot speed, he could be last man standing with the lightweight. Yes, he’s been a bludger this prep when he has looked the winner but bad luck has gone his way, but I like him up to 1350m and he is a horse who thrives on rain affected ground. He’ll be backed again I’m sure.
