WA racing this Saturday returns to Ascot where eight races will be run and won. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:48) Tabtouch Handicap 1000m
3 How To Fly (Bet Now: $2.50) clearly on top. Adam Durrant trains this filly, who is on the seven day back up after racing in the 3YO Magic Millions at Pinjarra last Saturday where she had three wide cover before launching late and just missing out on picking up Epic Grey. Back to 1000m looks ideal and gets the claim for Kirby.
5 Bon Voyage (Bet Now: $3.00) is a well bred Testa Rossa gelding trained by Team Williams who scored a sharp maiden win first up at Bunbury before racing over 1100m here three weeks ago and finishing off with real purpose from the back to run second to Dutch Spy. Blinkers are on first time to sharpen him and outside How To Fly, this isn’t overly strong.
1 Cognac (Bet Now: $5.00) will love the step back to 1000m. He ran in the 3YO Magic Millions at Pinjarra last Saturday where he did a bit of early work to sit on speed and was there to win but a hard 1200m just sees him out and he had to settle for fourth. Will love the step back in trip and if he can overcome the gate, he’ll take some beating.
Race 2. (16:29) Argonaut Corporate Advisors & Stockbrokers Plate 1200m
2 Assetro (Bet Now: $1.55) for me. This filly is rated as one of the best by Adam Durrant in terms of the horses he has trained throughout his career and that is a very big wrap for a two year old who has only had the one start, and that start resulted in an outstanding win over this track/distance on New Years Day. Looks a rising star of WA racing and she should put them away.
4 Cockatiel (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Stephen Miller trained son of Galah who debuted in the Magic Millions last Saturday where I thought he ran a very credible race in what looked a hot contest, running a game third to Valour Road. On that run, he’d rate very highly, but he does bump into smart ones here and draws a nasty gate.
7 Blankenberge (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Hinchinbrook filly on debut for the Simon Miller team. This girl has had three trials to prepare for her first start, the latest coming on Tuesday over 400m here when second, beaten a lip but went about her business nicely. Gets the blinkers on and always respect the stable and their first starters, as we saw last Saturday in the Magic Millions.
Race 3. (17:09) Off The Track Supporting Retired WA Horses Maiden 1200m
1 Comparative (Bet Now: $7.50) is a fifteen start maiden but I think he can get the job done here. This bloke resumed at this track/distance a fortnight back where he was a drifter in betting but you could make a case he should have won. Got badly held up in the straight when appearing to be bolting, having no real momentum when fourth to Vermont Lady. If the breaks go his way, he’ll take some beating.
3 Tycoon Legend (Bet Now: $4.40) ran third in the Vermont Lady race. The five year old gelding was a hard favourite to take out the race but he wasn’t suited by the slow tempo. Got back with cover and presented at the right time but just couldn’t produce the necessary turn of foot to get the job done. Hopefully he gets speed in front of him this time.
4 Savuno (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Savabeel gelding first up. This gelding had a three run prep during the Winter/Spring, with his best effort coming second when third to subsequent city performer Golgotha in a 1500m maiden. I think 1400m+ is his preferred trip, but he didn’t trial up too bad and this isn’t a strong race.
Race 4. (17:49) D'Orsogna Handicap (1MW) 1000m
8 Masquerade (Bet Now: $2.45) looks a lovely time for Team Williams who should take some beating here. Resumed with a dynamic win over 1200m at Bunbury before going to the 1200m here a tick over a fortnight back and working home strongly to just miss out on picking up Orange Strudel. Back to 1000m is of some concern, but I’ll trust the stable.
4 Presentatie (Bet Now: $7.50) is an Adam Durrant trained mare who had been running well in town in previous preps without winning so the stable sent her to Geraldton to get her confidence up and she got that with a dominant resuming victory. Comes to town in a good frame of mind and gets in well with the claim for young Kirby.
1 Forbidden Planet (Bet Now: $13.00) is a speedy gelding that resumes for the Pearce stable. This bloke hasn’t raced since September 23 at Belmont when down the track behind I Am Incredible after leading at a brutal speed. That is his go, so 1000m fresh looks ideal for his return, and he has trialled up pretty well in preparation.
Race 5. (18:25) Amelia Park Handicap (72+) 1400m
3 Oliver’s Travels (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Simon Miller trained galloper on the seven day back up after racing over the mile at Pinjarra last Saturday where I thought he ran an enormous race in defeat behind Eleven Seconds. He sat wide no cover for most of the race and pulled his head off in the process, but he only got beat two lengths. I think back to 1400m is a big tick and obviously he has done well during the week to warrant the run the following Saturday.
I think 7 Cougar Nights (Bet Now: $10.00) is the value once again. Didn’t really rate him much of a chance when resuming a few Wednesdays back at Pinjarra but gee he produced a brilliant finishing burst from the back to win impressively. Should get a lovely run off the pace here, and there can only be upside from that outstanding resumption.
9 Prize Catch (Bet Now: $10.00) is another on the quick back up from the Pinjarra meeting last Saturday. This bloke ran down the straight over 1000m and I thought his effort was quite good when sixth to Gee Boss, beaten three lengths, making up good ground in the inferior part of the track. Up to 1400m is a big tick and he gets the claim for Randy Tan.
Race 6. (19:05) Owners Only Supporting WA Racehorse Owners Handicap 1400m
Giving 9 State Prosecutor (Bet Now: $6.50) another chance here. Ran over this track/distance a tick over two weeks ago and he just got a mile back off them but worked home with purpose late when fourth to Paradise Square. I hope they take advantage of the good draw, because that is when he does tend to race best.
5 Arctic Stream (Bet Now: $2.70) is a very smart looking gelding that resumes for the Ross Price team. This bloke had a two run Spring prep to kick off his career, both coming at Bunbury over 1200m and 1400m respectively, winning both impressively. Trialled sensationally on Monday at Bunbury and looks ready to go for the resumption.
1 Private Dancer (Bet Now: $8.50) is the watch horse. Smart filly that resumes for the Trevor Andrews camp after a solid Spring prep, where she contested the top three year old races and ran okay but didn’t quite measure up. Thought her Belmont trial last week was solid enough and 1400m fresh tells me she’s forward enough to run well.
Race 7. (19:45) Magic Millions Yearling Sale Handicap (1MW) 1400m
8 Jeraft (Bet Now: $2.30) is a progressive gelding for the Neville Parnham team who is on the quick back up after racing at this track/distance last Wednesday in a Class One where he had a lovely sit off the pace before being presented clear air at the top of the straight and finishing best to score. Harder here, but hard to knock a horse in winning form.
2 Belter (Bet Now: $4.20) could be the knockout chance. Resumed with an encouraging second over 1000m here before stepping up to 1200m a fortnight back and just lacking the dash behind Royal Missile, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Third up at 1400m looks ideal and he looks to map rather nicely.
1 Barzinho (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting runner. Hussonet gelding that resumes for the Chris gangemi team. This bloke hasn’t raced since October 21 over the mile here when settling last and staying there behind Pushin’ Shapes. Thought he trialled up well recently at Belmont and 1400m fresh tells me there has been plenty of work gone into him.
Race 8. (20:22) St Pats Raceday March 17 Handicap (66+) 1600m
6 My Grace (Bet Now: $7.00) looks the obvious in the get out. Team Williams trains this mare, who is going really well at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Thought Pike rode her a treat four weeks back here and she looked home but couldn’t hold out the finishing burst of Sabdalwood, who franked the form by winning last Saturday. That does read well for this.
2 Taxadermy (Bet Now: $6.00) has been excellent in three runs back from a spell for the Lindsey Smith yard. He is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he was wide no cover for the trip yet stuck on really well to run second to Mulga, beaten around a neck. If he can get cover from the sticky draw, he’s one of the hardest to beat.
7 Anisau (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Geraldton visitor who rises big time in depth but is racing really well. He had the 1/1 sit when racing over 1400m on his home track last time out and for the most part he looked home but the weight just bogged him down when second to Megamind, beaten a half length. Gets really good weight relief and maps super.
