The RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) highlights a fab card at Ascot this Saturday, with the Group race being a last ditch effort for horses to squeeze into the Railway final field. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:24) Mumm Champagne Plate 1000m
1 Specialism (Bet Now: $2.25) is a Safeguard filly for Paul Jordan who debuted over 1100m here three weeks ago and she did a great job in winning, leading all the way despite only having one 400m trial under the belt. Think she’ll come right on from that, should be on speed and prove hard to run down against this lot.
7 Jevelation (Bet Now: $3.60) is a daughter of Safeguard on debut for the Jim Taylor stable. This girl trialled just under three weeks back over 400m at Belmont and looked okay though it’s hard to get a real guide on those trials. In the right stable though and should get a reasonable run near the speed. Can win without surprising.
4 Mia Dolce (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Frank Pangallo trained filly who debuted in the Specialism race mentioned above and she had market support at longer odds, backed in late and the market move almost came off. She had to settle for a narrow second. Not sure where she gets to from the tricky gate but has talent.
Race 2. (17:04) Handicap (72+) 1400m
4 Arcadia Prince (Bet Now: $1.60) on top. Adam Durrant trains this four year old, who is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he just got too far back but worked home strongly to run second to Jeraft, who has since gone on to win the York Cup, so the form reads well and third up, he should be hard fit.
5 Broker (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Trade Fair resuming for Jason Miller. This bloke has shown good promise since day one and produced a really good Summer/Autumn campaign when last in work. Hasn’t raced for over five months but a couple of Lark Hill trials leading in have been strong enough to suggest he can sprint well fresh.
2 Mad Brad (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Team Pearce trained gelding who hasn’t been far away of late and could easily win here without surprising. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and was game in defeat when third to impressive winner Freo, who goes around in the Peters. Claim helps and draws a soft gate.
Race 3. (17:43) Hosemasters On Site Service Handicap (1MW) 1100m
Hoping we can get an each price about 4 Kaapander (Bet Now: $17.00). This Peter Farrell trained sprinter resumed over 1000m here on Cup Day and you could make a case he should have won despite starting near $20. Just had no luck in the straight and clearly had something to give. Better luck here and I’m sure he’ll run well behind a good speed.
8 M’Lady (Bet Now: $3.60) will likely set that speed. This former South Australian mare has really taken to life in WA, winning two of her three outings, the latest coming in the race mentioned above where she was out of trouble on speed and proved too good. Should lead from gate one and look the winner for the most part.
10 Truly Belong (Bet Now: $8.50) is a staying mare resuming for the Adam Durrant stable. This mare is better suited at 2000m+, but is 2/3 first up and will get a suck run along the inside from the draw. Finished down the track in a Lark Hill trial but the winner of that, The Velvet King, franked that form last Saturday.
Race 4. (18:25) WA Champion Fillies Stakes 1600m
5 Arcadia Queen (Bet Now: $1.95) should be winning this. Team Williams trains this filly, who was unbeaten prior to the Burgess Queen on Cup Day where she just got too far back but rattled home to run third to Lady Cosmology. Smaller field and up to the mile, she should win barring bad luck. Good thing on the program.
2 Flirtini (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Simon Miller trained filly who has been really good through the Princess Series but hasn’t quite got the job done. She sat on speed in the Burgess Queen and looked home but stablemate Lady Cosmology nabbed her on the peg. I think with cover and a more patient steer, she can get the job done.
3 Leading Girl (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Team Williams trained filly who won her first two career outings prior to racing in the Burgess Queen on Cup Day where she faced her toughest test to date and while she didn’t win, she was far from disgraced behind Lady Cosmology. Not sure she has the brilliance or upside to win, but she’s certainly got her fair share of talent.
Race 5. (19:00) Colonel Reeves Stakes 1100m
Hard to get away from the bonny mare that is 3 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $2.40). She’s 2/2 this time in for Dan Morton, the latest win coming in the Prince Of Wales when producing her customary brilliant finale to get the win. She’s the pick of the locals alongside Enticing Star for the Winterbottom IMO. Think she can continue her winning ways.
4 Profit Street (Bet Now: $9.00) is a ripping sprinter for the Giadesco team who resumed in the Prince Of Wales a fortnight back and his run was one of the best runs from the race, rattling home from near last. I think 1200m would be perfect for him, so 1100m might be a tad sharp still but he will be strong late.
This time last year, 2 State Solicitor (Bet Now: $16.00) was the ruling favourite for the Winterbottom and gee haven’t times changed. He’s been such a disappointment this time in despite looking sharp at the trials prior to the resumption. This run is last chance for mine to see if he’s a contender or pretender.
Race 6. (19:37) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1MW) 1400m
He’s getting to last chance territory is 2 Royal Command (Bet Now: $2.20) but this looks his race. Thought that was the case here a fortnight back but he just had no answers for the brilliance of Freo. Draws to get three wide cover and I don’t think there are any horses in the class of Freo going around in this event.
5 Thisaway (Bet Now: $23.00) looks a key threat for Trevor Andrews. He comes through the Freo race mentioned above where he never really looked likely but he stuck to the task alright out wide after getting back in the run. He’ll likely follow Royal Command, follow every move that Parnham makes and have last look.
1 Mulga (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Gary Hitchcock trained gelding that resumes. This horse, ability wise, is probably the pick of this lot, but he’s had his fair share of issues and connections have had to be patient. At his best, he’s certainly good enough to beat this lot, and his Bunbury a couple of weeks back was very good to the eye.
Race 7. (20:12) RJ Peters Stakes 1500m
2 Action (Bet Now: $2.25) should be winning this for mine. Team Williams have got Galaxy Star in the Railway and I think they can get another runner in the race with this bloke, who was very good in the Asian Beau when second to Galaxy Star. Third up at 1500m, he should be ready to show his best. Keen on him.
5 Great Again (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Lindsey Smith trained gelding who faces his toughest test to date but he’s a beauty who rarely runs a bad race. Ran over 1400m here three weeks back where he attempted to lead all the way and just felt the pinch late when fourth to Jeraft, who won the York Cup to frank the form. He’ll be in it for a long way.
3 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $12.00) will give a stack of cheek in front for mine for the Neville Parnham team. He resumed in the Asian Beau where he had good market support at longer odds and he attempted to lead all the way but he just the pinch late when fifth to Galaxy Star. Fitter, he should lead and prove very hard to run down.
Race 8. (20:47) Crown Towers Handicap (66+) 1800m
9 Press The Petal (Bet Now: $11.00) will do me in the last. Adam Durrant looks to have this mare going really well. He was three weeks between runs when racing over the mile here at the midweeks where she got well back in the run but closed off with real purpose late to run third to My Fair Beauty. Third up at 1800m from a soft draw, she appeals.
15 American Joy (Bet Now: $5.50) is a stablemate of Press The Petal who has been a little tease for a while but she’s certainly got the talent and ability to beat this lot. Ran over this track/distance three weeks back where she settled last in the run and never really got into the hunt but was good late behind Mr Alby. She’ll spot them a start but be strong at the end.
3 Senso (Bet Now: $23.00) could be a knockout at odds. Paul Jordan trains this gelding, who was three weeks between runs when contesting the My Fair Beauty race mentioned above where he was wide no cover for the trip but stuck on really well in defeat to run third. Draws much better and the claim for Kate Witten is a big tick.
