The course proper at Morphettville will return to host Saturday racing this weekend, the first time since the Carnival. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:26) Fleurieu Milk Company Handicap 1050m
2 Thorondor (Bet Now: $2.10) has to go on top for mine. I’m not sure what he beat on debut a few weeks ago on the Parks track in Adelaide but the way in which he did it was very impressive and he won doing plenty wrong late, with the margin flattering his rivals. In saying that, the depth here doesn’t look strong so happy to be with him.
1 Crockett (Bet Now: $2.90) is a talented gelding that resumes for Tony McEvoy. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Brisbane Summer Carnival where he was on a Magic Millions path and just didn’t quite measure up with them, finishing down the track behind Sunlight. Been given a good break and his trial win last week at Gawler was very good.
5 Counter Drive (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Bernadini gelding for the Macdonald/Gluyas team who debuted behind Thorondor a fortnight ago where he was tucked in behind the speed and looked to be going well but just lacked the killer ping to go with them late. He’ll be better suited over further but bigger track and run under the belt should help.
Race 2. (13:01) Hughes Limousines Handicap (70) 1600m
1 Danger Deal (Bet Now: $1.95) on top for me. The MacDonald/Guyas stable train this three year old, who is a few weeks between runs since racing at Sandown where he had a suck run behind the speed but class probably was the issue in the end behind Fifty Stars. Back to this level, back home, he should take some beating up to the mile.
4 Canford (Bet Now: $3.60) is a son of Canford Cliffs trained by Ryan Balfour who was good two back in the Adelaide Guineas before dropping back to benchmark grade a fortnight back on the Parks track and proving far too good for his rivals. Has his confidence up now and should prove hard to hold out.
3 Helcrimson (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Darren Weir trained gelding who just missed out on the win two back at Cranbourne before going to Sandown last Wednesday where not much went right for him behind Florida Keys in what I thought was a forgive run. I think up to the mile against his own age, he should take some beating.
Race 3. (13:36) Darley Handicap (70) 2032m
4 Annaman (Bet Now: $5.50) on top. Darren Weir trains this bludger, who hasn’t won for a very long time, but I reckon his two runs back from a break have been very good. Worked home well first up at Bendigo behind All Out Of Love before going to Ballarat over 2000m where he got a mile back in an on pace dominated affair and was good late behind Midas Man. Third up, thin race, no excuses I think.
6 More Than Fabulous (Bet Now: $6.00) is a former Sydney sider who has had a few runs in SA for Gary Searle and I think he has been pretty good since coming over. Really liked the way he last time out over 2100m at Gawler, winning quite comfortably. Been freshened up and a tick over trial win was sharp. If we get a wet track, he comes right into play.
5 Beau’s My Boy (Bet Now: $9.50) is a bit of an unknown at the trip but he’s racing well enough to earn a crack. He ran over 1700m at Gawler last Wednesday where he settled off the pace in the run and worked home quite well late behind Table Of Wisdom, who is a proven city performer. He’s racing as if 2000m will suit, and he’s in the right stable.
Race 4. (14:16) Quayclean Handicap (82) 2500m
6 Big Hammer (Bet Now: $2.10) clearly on top for me. This bloke was a dominant winner during the Warrnambool Carnival before being well specked last time out in the Andrew Ramsden and he just didn’t quite run the two miles out behind Sin To Win. Been freshened up and has been tuned up with a jumps trial win last week at Warrnambool.
5 Super Haze (Bet Now: $5.00) goes in the numbers but I’m not sure I could back him. He was well backed when racing on the Parks track two weeks ago and I thought Jamie Kah gave the gelding every chance in the run I thought when tiring to run sixth to Mongolian Wolf. Hard to trust, but back on the bigger track…one more chance.
11 Exalted Craftsman (Bet Now: $51.00) is eligible for much easier but I thought his run behind Mongolian Wolf was full of merit. He sat off the speed and he didn’t go backwards at all. He actually stuck on and beat a couple home to be only 3.5L from the winner. I think he can definitely add some value to exotics.
Race 5. (14:56) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1100m
6 Albert’s Lad (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a very promising horse for Peter Gelagotis and I think he can measure up. Has had two career outings, both times on his home track at Moe and each time he has been ridden by Olly, who has made the effort to travel to Moe each time, which is a lead of the ability the horse has. Won first up and it was vintage Olly that got him home. Should come on from that and I think he can run well.
3 Thompson’s Reward (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Reward For Effort for David Jolly who was specked in betting when resuming over 1000m on the Parks track two weeks ago and for the most part, he wasn’t really going anywhere, but the last 150m, he absolutely savaged the line and won impressively. If he can repeat that, he’s in the game for sure.
4 Wallace Street (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Richard Jolly trained son of Written Tycoon who resumed in the Thompson’s Reward race a fortnight ago and I thought his effort was really good. Sat wide no cover for the trip and really had every right to drop out but he stuck on really well late to run third. Better suited on the course proper and is fitter.
Race 6. (15:36) UBET Handicap (64) 1050m
7 Air Guitar (Bet Now: $3.50) for me. Darren Weir trains this three year old, who was backed off the map when debuting over the 1000m at Warracknabeal and despite sitting three and four wide no cover for the trip, he savaged the line late to get the win. Bit to like about him and I think he can go close to beating these.
8 He Is Golden (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Golden Lake gelding that resumes here. This bloke hasn’t raced since early November when running fourth on the Parks track behind the above average Chapel City. Trial last week at Gawler was solid enough and though he can do plenty wrong, there’s certainly a decent engine under the hood.
2 Mysticano (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Darren Magro trained gelding who resumed three weeks back on the Parks track in a much harder race and I thought his run wasn’t too bad in the end behind a talented horse in Showpero. Trialled well enough last week at Gawler and he does have a really good second up record. Definite chance.
Race 7. (16:16) See The Magic Of Matt Tarrant At Morphettville Handicap (70) 1600m
12 Star Patriot (Bet Now: $4.20) is a pretty good mare for the Travis Doudle team who was very good two back in the Queen of The South before dropping back in grade three weeks back on the Parks track and though the margin was narrow, the win was dominant. She sort of half turned it up but proved too good, and that form has been franked. Hopefully she can go on with it.
5 Minoan Spirit (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Darren Weir trained galloper who bounced back to his best with a tough win last time out at Bendigo over the mile on a shifty track. He looked in a bit of trouble halfway down the straight but he eventually knuckled down under Yendall and found plenty to surge and win. Not much harder here. Just needs cover from the draw.
8 Igitur (Bet Now: $26.00) is a staying gelding who resumed over 1400m on the Parks track two weeks ago and I thought his effort was really good, especially his last 150m when working home strongly between runners. Might need one more run before he steps out to 1800-2000, but hard to ignore that resumption.
Race 8. (16:55) Irish Raceday September 1 Handicap (70) 1200m
I think Victorian visitor 9 Artie Fred (Bet Now: $15.00) can run well here. Paul Rocke trains this gelding, who has run well here in Adelaide before and I think he finds a very winnable race. Unwanted in betting last Wednesday at Sandown in an on pace dominated affair yet worked home pretty well I thought behind Nordic Empire. Third up, so he has upside and he should just about be at peak fitness.
14 Good Luck Chuck (Bet Now: $12.00) looks to be going quite well at the moment for the Kristi Evans team. He ran over the 1250m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he sat just off the speed and tried hard when third to He’s A Moral, a handy galloper for Darren Weir. Handles a wet track and draws to get a lovely run.
4 Counter Spin (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained gelding who ran over 1400m on the Parks track a fortnight back where he settled off the pace and worked to the line strongly to run third to Going Gaga. Tends to save his best for the course proper and I think te step back to 1200m is a big, big tick.
