Moonee Valley is where Melbourne racing takes place this Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:45) Ladbrokes Info Hub Handicap 1200m
Back Me: Hard to get away from 1 Kings Brook (Bet Now: $4.20).Β Good debut at Sandown before looking the part in the yard prior to the run at Ballarat last time out and she ran right up to her looks, putting them away in a couple of strides and bolted in despite doing a bit wrong. Working progress but looks talented and the one to beat.
3 Tahitian Dancer (Bet Now: $4.20) a definite threat. Shane Nicholls trains this Dawn Approach filly, who debuted three weeks back over the 1200m at Sandown where she got well back on the rails but you had to like the way she finished off her race when third to Scottish Rogue. Looks to have good upside and hopefully she can come on from that.
8 Symphonette (Bet Now: $4.40) is a well bred filly for Phillip Stokes who was hard in the market when debuting on the Parks track back home a fortnight ago where she was on speed and looked to travel well throughout. Hit the front, kicked hard, but was overhauled by the very impressive No Joy. 1200m is the query, but she’s in the right stable.
Race 2. (12:15) Friends Of Epworth Plate (84) 1600m
1 Hectopascal (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Darren Weir trained mare that is going really well at the moment. She ran here a fortnight back where she got well back in the run under Ethan Brown and she tried hard but was no match for the class of Jamaican Rain. Little unknown at the mile but off last start, she’ll have no issue.
8 Snogging (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Bussutin/Young trained filly who scored a good win two back at Caulfield before going to the Roses at Doomben where she was outclassed behind Youngstar. This looks more her go but I’m just not sure about her at a hard mile at this level. Just depends how much petrol is left. Market will be the guide.
9 Good Oh (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Mick Kent trained mare who now has that winning feeling under the belt. Luke Nolen gave her a peach last time out over 1400m at Ballarat and though she took a little while to get going, you had to love the way she finished off, especially her last furlong. She’ll eat up the mile here and stable is going really well.
Race 3. (12:50) Device Technologies Sprint (78) 1200m
5 Artie Dee Two (Bet Now: $1.55) is going quite well at the moment for Darren Weir. Fitness got him the win two back at Ballarat before going to Sandown three weeks ago where he got a mile back but worked home strongly behind Highland Beat. Two time winner here and is in form, so he ticks a few boxes.
If he’s fit, I think 1 Eusebio (Bet Now: $8.00) wins. James Cummings trains this gelding, who promised a fair bit during the Summer but never lived up to the expectation. Been given a good break and his two trials in Sydney have been good enough. His overall form reads superior to this lot. Fitness the only query.
It’ll be interesting if there is a push for 4 So Poysed (Bet Now: $23.00). The stable is renowned for pulling off a first up plunge, though in recent times they have had several hits and misses. This bloke is certainly capable on his previous form, he’s a winner here and has had jump outs/trials to prepare. Definite watch.
Race 4. (13:25) Silver Thomas Hanley Plate (78) 1200m
Happy to be with 9 Moonlites Choice (Bet Now: $6.00) for Darren Weir. This mare was 11 months between runs when resuming over this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought Williams was just too negative on her and she really had no hope where she was behind Moonlover. if she can blend in earlier, with the run under the belt, convinced she’s the best horse in the race.
If 2 King River (Bet Now: $7.00) produces something similar to last start, he’ll go very close. He ran a few weeks back at Caulfield over 1200m where he had cover throughout before Daniel Moor clicked him up and he showed an electric turn of foot to win impressively. Fast run 1200m looks ideal for him, handles all conditions and is in a winning frame of mind.
6 Dane Thunder (Bet Now: $10.00) looks to be going really well at the moment for the Shane Bottomley team. Fitness bet him first up at ballarat before going to Sale where he looked the winner a long way out and though the margin was narrow, he was always in control. Form out of that has been good, draws to get decent three wide cover and have last say.
Race 5. (14:05) Catanach's Jewellers Handicap 1200m
I think this race does evolve around 1 Bon Aurum (Bet Now: $19.00), because if he is anywhere near right, I think he wins. High class galloper for Ciaron Maher who hasn’t raced since the Spring of 2016 where he contested a couple of majors and ran well, getting up to win the Sir Rupert Clarke. Two trials leading in have been good…market will be the guide.
Tipping the speed to be pretty good here, which will suit the Patrick Payne trained 2 Widgee Turf (Bet Now: $4.20). He ran over 1200m at Randwick several weeks ago where he got a mile back off them but I liked the way he closed off late in the piece behind Dreamforce. Think 1400m+ is his go, but a fast run 1200m will see him be very strong late.
7 Falcool (Bet Now: $7.00) is a talented galloper for Will Clarken who was off the map when racing over 1000m two weeks ago on the Parks track and aided by a peach from Jamie Kah, he hugged the rail, got the inside split and dashed hard to win well. Was 1200 back to 1000 that afternoon so he’ll be better suited back up to the six furlongs.
Race 6. (14:45) Epi Cafe Plate (84) 1000m
Great to see 7 Unique Lovely (Bet Now: $7.00) back at the races. Frankie Stockdale trains this quality mare, who hasn’t raced since August last year when finishing just behind the placegetters at Sandown, with the market saying she’d need the run and she ran accordingly. Been given a good break and her recent trial was very good to the eye.
2 Showpero (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Francis/Kent trained mare from Adelaide who was well backed when resuming on the Parks track three weeks ago and with some help from a lovely ride from Jamie Kah, the mare showed her class and she proved far too good for her rivals. Is a second up winner and has run well here before.
A track with give in it will suit 10 World Of Hope (Bet Now: $26.00). Thought there was a bit to like about her effort here behind Moonlover two weeks back, sitting back and working home well to be beaten just under four lengths. She thrives on a track with genuine give in it, which is what she’ll get here. I think she’s a knockout chance at odds.
Race 7. Embassy Print Solutions Sprint 1000m
2 Miss Leonidas (Bet Now: $3.70) for me. Shaun Dwyer trains this filly, who ran down the straight at Flemington last Saturday where I thought Dunn rode her a treat and for the most part, she looked home, but she was bloused near the peg by Double Jeopardy. Back around a bend, she’ll be better off, and I like she is on the quick turnaround.
5 Layel (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Mick Price trained filly on the quick back up after leading all the way to win last Wednesday at Sandown. Admittedly, Grey Shadow probably should have beaten her, but she did the work from the front end and found plenty. I think back to 1000m is a big tick. She’ll be on speed and strong late.
9 Cath’s Village (Bet Now: $8.50) is a filly for Darren Weir who looks to be going really well. Well backed when winning the maiden two back at Geelong before going to the Geelong Synthetic where she was even more impressive. This is her hardest to date, but hard fit, settling off a hot speed and is in the right stable.
Race 8. (16:05) GJK Facility Services Plate 2040m
Happy to be with 6 My Nordic Hero (Bet Now: $4.80). Chris Waller trains this gelding, who ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought Micky Dee gave the gelding every chance but he was very one paced and just couldn’t quite pick up Lite’n In My Veins. He does have that run under the belt and the experience here, so he’ll be better off.
8 Have Another Glass (Bet Now: $4.40) is a beauty for the Sue Jaensch team and should be respected. This mare was a super winner of the Centaurea two back before stepping back in trip and running a game second to Tatoosh. Back up to ten furlongs will be ideal for this girl and you always have to respect SA horses when they come to Melbourne.
I think fourth up from a long break, 2 Pilote D’Essai (Bet Now: $14.00) might be ready to do something. He comes through the Lite’n In My Veins race here two weeks ago where he just did a bit too much work from the draw and that early effort just told late behind the Ciaron Maher galloper. Regan back on and he rides this horse better than anyone. Potential improver.
Race 9. (16:41) Bidford Travis Harrison Cup 1600m
12 Sixties Groove (Bet Now: $6.50), if he does everything, just about wins this. He was off the map when resuming at this track/distance two weeks back where he got back to near last in the run. Williams eased him wide on the turn, built good momentum and surged but wanted to lay in badly behind Jacquinot Bay. If he puts it together, I think he wins.
5 Montauk (Bet Now: $21.00) could be a sleeper at odds. He is four weeks between runs since racing over 2000m at Flemington where he was outclassed by a star in Boom Time. He was one of many outclassed behind the Caulfield Cup winner. Freshened up and I think a hard mile here with the suck run will really suit him.
2 Killarney Kid (Bet Now: $71.00) is a horse who creates interest for me. Darren Weir trains this bloke, who resumed over 1400m at Flemington and visually didn’t do much behind Moss ‘N’ Dale but individually, the splits were okay. Has had jumps trials since to sharpen him up and he’s certainly good enough to figure. One for exotics I suspect.
Race 10. (17:11) Epworth Medical Imaging Sprint 1200m
Siding with 5 Bel Sonic (Bet Now: $3.90) in the get out. Jason Warren has this horse going really well this time in. Resumed with a narrow second at Caulfield before racing at this track/distance a fortnight back where he surged hard late to just miss out on the win, settling for second to Spirit Of Aquada. Race ten, off the rail should be best and swoopers will come into play aka this bloke.
Well if you were on 7 Grey Shadow (Bet Now: $4.40) last Wednesday at Sandown, that was just a nightmare to watch. Ethan Brown has credits in bank, but he lost some with the Lucky For All steer and he butchered Grey Shadow, who was off the map late. Form prior was very good and she can bounce back here for sure.
12 Usain Bowler (Bet Now: $7.50) looks a progressive type for the John Sadler team. Flopped two back on the Pakenham Synthetic before going this track/distance two weeks ago where he got back and worked home well to run a close up third to Spirit Of Aquada. He can carry that form here and run well again.
