A nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:37) Tropical Fresh Handicap 2200m
Usually fresh blood in these staying races in Queensland go close so with that being the case, I’ll go the way of 5 Vaucluse Bay (Bet Now: $6.00). He ran over 2000m at Randwick three weeks ago and like most behind Mercurial Lad, he just couldn’t get into the race and never looked likely, with Rachel King pulling their pants down on the leader/winner. This is a rather weak staying race, and his best Sydney form would see him win this.
3 Follow Suit (Bet Now: $3.80) made his Queensland debut for Chris Waller three weeks ago at the Sunny Coast where he appeared to be well placed on paper but was very one paced to the line and had his chance for mine when third to Capital Gain, who was given a 12/10 steer from Larry. He’s a tricky one to follow and hard to get a read on, but he’s in the right stable.
1 Estikhraaj (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Chris Waller trained galloper who has done a really good job since moving to Queensland. Ran well behind Tally two back before being freshened up and racing at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago where he was alright but for mine he had his chance behind Ingeegoodbee. Perhaps back to Doomben and sitting off a slow speed to show his turn of foot will see him bounce back.
Race 2. (14:12) QLD Chinese Jockey Club Plate 1110m
5 Vincere Volare (Bet Now: $1.40) looks the one to beat. Tony Gollan trains this filly for Aquis, who debuted here over 1200m on November 24 where she was well backed late and she absolutely bolted in, leading most of the way. Tipped out immediately and the trial win here on January 29 was very good to the eye and the clock backed him up. Think she’s the way to go.
4 Xanthus (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Better Than Ready on debut for the Matty Dunn team. This bloke has had two trials in readiness for his first day at the races, the latest over 1000m at Deagon last week where he ran second but looked to go about his quite nicely I thought. Stable is going well with their juveniles and/or first starters and he has gate one.
8 Iamican (Bet Now: $6.00) is a David Vandyke trained filly who I was keen to see when she debuted at Eagvle Farm two weeks ago but unfortunately she got stuck wide from a tricky gate and was never really in the hunt behind Garibaldi. She trialled up enormous prior to that, beating stablemate and the above average Alligator Blood, so have to give her another look.
Race 3. (14:47) Asian Plus Handicap 1600m
2 Emphasis (Bet Now: $2.50) comes back to the mile after racing over 1800m at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago and the run in defeat was absolutely enormous. He was no closer than three deep for the trip, doing work all the way yet was still there near the line when a close up third to Ingeegoodbe. Back to the mile should suit after that gutbuster…just depends what’s left in the tank.
4 Astoria (Bet Now: $3.20) is a former Godolphin runner who has had a couple of runs now for Diane Murphy and hasn’t been too bad. Sat on speed at Eagle Farm a fortnight back and tried hard but just felt the pinch late behind the in form Bluebrook. Think Doomben will suit him much better, likely leads this field for fun and Fradd jumping on looks a good lead for mine.
3 Bratislava (Bet Now: $5.50) deserves a crack at Saturday grade again. Brad Witt has done a really good job with this horse in recent times, the latest start seeing him win at this track/distance in a Class 5 where it was simply class coming to the fore late. Much more depth here, but that was his first look at the mile and he was strong late, so no reason to see why he can’t run well again.
Race 4. (15:22) Keiba Asiatic Handicap (70) 1600m
Interested to see how 2 Reiby The Red (Bet Now: $8.50) goes, a former Sydney sider who made his debut for Les Kelly at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago and I thought he did a good job in defeat, sitting just off the speed before presenting on the turn and though a tad flat footed early on, he picked and was good late when a length second to Honour’n’Strength. At his best, he’s in this for sure and maps to get the A1 run.
4 Get Stuck In (Bet Now: $1.95) is a son of Lucas Cranah who is getting better with racing and was rewarded with a good win at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago, overhauling the in form Drumadoir in the shadows of the post. 0/3 at Doomben on face value doesn’t read great but the last two runs, he’s been beaten under a length, so that stat is misleading. He can win again for sure.
9 Arazona (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Liam Birchley trained mare who is just struggling a touch to greet the judge first but if the breaks go her way here, she can threaten. Hasn’t raced since January 19 when at Eagle Farm and running a close up second to Takings, who bolted up last week at Ipswich to frank the form. Her best chance of winning will be if she finds the front and gets a cheap furlong.
Race 5. (16:02) Tropical Fresh Plate (Class 3) 1110m
11 Shalwa (Bet Now: $1.70) showed decent promise when racing in Victoria before being transferred to Tony Gollan and he made his Queensland debut at Ipswich over 1000m where she absolutely bolted in, justifying the $1.22 SP. Second up syndrome off a brilliant first up win is a little query, but she looks to be a mare of some promise and on her form in Melbourne, clearly one of the hardest to beat.
Fascinating runner is 4 Beacon (Bet Now: $4.80), formerly with James Cummings but has found himself under the care of Toby Edmonds. He had been racing well in Sydney/Melbourne but wasn’t quite measuring up well enough to warrant staying there, so he’s now in Queensland his trial here was very good to the eye. Would be on top, but the gate makes the job hard.
If they go silly in front, look for 10 Intrinsic (Bet Now: $17.00) to be warming to the task at the end. Kris Lees trains this mare, who is resuming off the back of a mixed Winter/Spring, where she teased to be a metro class horse but for the most just struggled a touch. Interesting she resumes without a trial, but can sprint well fresh and does have a good finale on her when let down.
Race 6. (16:42) H&T Handicap 1200m
I’ll side the way of 6 Fuji Flyer (Bet Now: $4.80) for the Heinrich/Rodgers stable. This bloke had a two run prep in the early part of the Spring to kick off his career, bolting up on debut at the Gold Coast before going here and running second to Defence Missile. Looks a horse of some promise and looked to move well to the eye in a recent Doomben trial. Keen to see how he goes.
1 Macewen (Bet Now: $2.80) has done a fab job this time in for Tony Gollan. Won a couple on the bounce before racing at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago where he took on a stronger field and despite sitting back off a slow tempo, he produced a brilliant finale to nab Magic Fox on the line. No horse here in the class of Magic Fox I don’t think so he has to be rated highly.
12 Trail Of Glory (Bet Now: $11.00) is a daughter of Rothesay for Tony Gollan that is first up. This girl hasn’t raced since August 18 at the Gold Coast when fourth to Sugar Sizzle in what has turned out to be a really good form reference. I think she’ll be better over further, but looks to have enough quality…not sure I could back her to win, but I think she’s a must for exotics.
Race 7. (17:22) QLD Chinese Jockey Club Handicap (0MW) 1200m
I reckon 8 Foxy Housewife (Bet Now: $11.00) could be an improver. I was keen on last time out over 1200m at the midweeks at Ipswich and she looked to be bolting down the side but on the turn she was getting the wobbles and didn’t really let down in a funny sort of run. Form has been franked via Curdled and with this mare, perhaps onto the bigger track will help her.
Can 1 Meet Mr Taylor (Bet Now: $1.35) stretch his brilliance to 1200m. If he can, he’s the likely winner. Been very well placed by Kelly Schweida to date and when the bar has been raised, the horse has risen to the occasion and passed with flying colours. This is his hardest test to date and likely cops pressure in front, but you don’t know how good a horse is til they are beaten.
This race has a pretty long tail to it, including 3 Mr Markou (Bet Now: $9.00). You could argue why on earth he is running given the circumstances but he’s here and could easily bounce back after being outclassed in the Sunshine Coast Cup behind surprise winner Balboa Rocks. The win prior in the Magic Millions Country Cup was a beauty and that effort would see him run well here.
Race 8. (18:00) Asian Plus Plate (Class 6 ) 1350m
4 Impasse (Bet Now: $4.00) is a son of Sepoy for Chris Waller resuming. He really found his best form when sent to Queensland after somewhat going through the motions in NSW. He won a couple of races last prep and was generally around the mark. Good fresh horse and though given a quiet trial here behind Wooshka, he’s got the quality to be in the finish IMO.
11 Mishani Electra (Bet Now: $3.20) looks the one to beat for mine. Ben Currie has this mare going really well at the moment, winning impressively two back over 1200m at Eagle Farm before stepping up 100m in trip, copping pressure in front and just tiring late when fourth to King Lear. Doomben 1350m looks more idea for her, should be on speed and proving hard to beat.
I think the market will be the real guide here with 2 Eminent (Bet Now: $4.20), a talented galloper for the David Vandyke camp that is first up. He hasn’t raced since May 30 at Ipswich when winning over 1700m against some handy opposition. Has clearly had his issues, but I must say his two trials leading up to his return have been very good to the eye, so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes.
Race 9. (18:35) TAB Handicap 1110m
4 Tumbler (Bet Now: $3.60) just needs to be within range on the turn and she’ll be winning this. She produced an unbelievable effort first up at the Sunny Coast three weeks back when beaten narrowly by Spurcraft. Her last 600m was sub 32, last 400 just over and her last 200m was 10.96. The problem is early speed…she’s got none. But just needs to be a length or two closer in the run this time around and she’ll be winning.
5 Spurcraft (Bet Now: $2.70) has outstanding early toe and will be in it for a long way. Charlotte White has done a fab job with this bloke, and he bounced back to winning form with a dominant on speed win at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago, and his last 600m of just over 33 wasn’t too bad either. He’ll be near the lead again, rolling and proving hard to run down once again.
8 Tawfiq Boy (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Kris Lees trained galloper that resumes. This bloke had a really good Winter/Spring, winning a couple of races with some decent placement from Kris Lees. Been given a break and his Gold Coast trial behind the in form Curdled does read quite well for this, and he can sprint well fresh. Also draws to get a lovely run just off the pace.
