The Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival continues this Saturday at Doomben where it is Lough Neagh Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:27) Makers Mark Plate (Class 3) 1350m
3 Eminent (Bet Now: $3.80) on top. David Vandyke trained three year old that hasn’t raced since November 15 at Ipswich when rounding them up from the back and winning with ease, beating Divine Unicorn, who has come out and won at the Gold Coast and run well in a Highway at Rosehill. Trialled up sharply a couple of weeks back at the Sunny Coast.
1 Doubt Defying (Bet Now: $4.80) had trialled up really well prior to resuming over 1200m here a fortnight back and aided by a lovely patient ride from Brad Stewart, the gelding powered to the line and got up to win in the last couple of strides. His best form is at this trip and slightly further, so he can only improve. Definite threat.
12 Polemic (Bet Now: $35.00) is the big watch here. Former Godolphin horse making his Queensland debut for Ballina trainer Stephen Lee. His best form when trained by Godolphin was at 1600m+, so I’m sure whatever he does here, he will improve on, but I didn’t mind the way he went in a recent Grafton. Yard/market watch.
Race 2. (14:02) Canadian Club Handicap (85) 1615m
14 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $5.50) is finding it hard to win again but gee he should go close here. Enormous effort here a fortnight back at the track/distance when doing a power of work on speed, only to go down narrowly at the hands of Mishani Phoenix. All he needs is just an ounce of better luck from last time and he’ll go close.
4 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $4.80) comes through the Mishani Phoenix race here from two weeks ago. This gelding got well off the pace but worked to the line with real purpose late under Ruby Ride to be beaten just over two lengths. Hasn’t run a bad race in some time this bloke, so no reason to jump off now.
5 Lord Coconuts (Bet Now: $13.00) is the best horse in the race but he has a horrible racing pattern. He too comes through the Mishani Phoenix race and again, he just got a mile out of his ground, but he picked up and was a real eye catcher once again to run fifth. If he is within striking range on the turn, he’s the one to look out for.
Race 3. (14:37) Cascade Phelan Ready Stakes 1110m
1 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $2.80 ODDS BOOST) just. Spirit Of Boom gelding who debuted over the 1050m here six weeks ago where he was backed as if unbeatable and despite copping serious heat on speed, he dashed clear and clung on for an outstanding first up win. Trialled up like Black Caviar last week at the Gold Coast and Spirit Of Boom, he could well be the next big thing in the sire ranks.
2 Crockett (Bet Now: $3.30 ODDS BOOST) is a Tony McEvoy colt who is heading towards the Magic Millions and should be respected here. He debuted back in early October on the Parks track at Morphettville and he didn’t beat much, but he ran really good relative to the meeting and won with a bit hand, doing some things wrong. Trialled up well last week at the Gold Coast and has be given serious thought.
4 Commisioner (Bet Now: $4.40 ODDS BOOST) is the big watch for mine. Stratum colt on debut for Team Snowden and James Harron Bloodstock who comes to Brisbane off just the one trial, but it was a good one at that when leading all the way at Wyong. Stable last 12 months haven’t really had the flashest of strike rates when coming to Brisbane, but in recent weeks, they have been bang on.
Race 4. (15:12) Canadian Club Calaway Gal Stakes 1110m
I think 9 Witherspoon (Bet Now: $4.40 ODDS BOOST) is the main danger. Brad Widdup trains this filly and she resumes. Debuted in the Gimcrack where I was quite keen on her chances and while she finished down the track, her run was sensational in defeat given she was four/five wide no cover on speed throughout. Trialled brilliantly last week at Wyong and looks ready to go.
18 The Art Of The Bar (Bet Now: $7.50 ODDS BOOST) is a very interesting runner for mine. Debutante for the Waterhouse/Bott team who trialled on Novemver 28 at Randwick and won well in her respective trial, and she smashed the clock relative to other trials that morning, including the older horses, which is always a good sign. Big watch.
5 Veranes (Bet Now: $16.00 ODDS BOOST) is a well bred filly for the Wood/Gesler yard who had strong market support when debuting in the Sizzling Plate. Had three wide cover before launching on the turn and looming large but she wobbled a bit and lost momentum. Think she’ll improve big time with the run under the belt and is a leading chance.
Race 5. (15:52) Cascade Handicap 2020m
You’d think only bad luck beats 2 Long Time Ago (Bet Now: $1.85). Brilliant ride by McEvoy got her home first up in the Summoned, beating home a subsequent winner in Mrs Gardenia. She then ran over 1800m at Sandown where she sat on speed all the way and tried very hard but was grabbed right on the peg by Night’s Watch, who had no luck in the Werribee Cup, so that form reads very well, should lead for fun here and win.
5 Outraged (Bet Now: $7.50) is the pick of the staying locals. He hasn’t raced since November 18 over 2200m where he got back and held up but worked to the line with purpose when second to My Giuliano, who has won again, so the form around him is good, he runs well and his recent trial was quite encouraging.
8 Richard Of Yorke (Bet Now: $16.00) could well be the one for exotics. He trialled up really well prior to resuming over the mile here where he had a suck run on the rail and while he lacked the turn of foot, he stuck on and I thought the run was more than satisfactory. Has run well second up before and up to the 2020m is only a bonus.
Race 6. (16:32) Bribie Handicap 1050m
3 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $20.00) is an absolute beauty for the Symons/Laxon yard. This bloke last raced in early August when working home okay from the back behind Stella Ombra. He has a great fresh record, loves racing at Doomben, he’ll be strong late and gave them a galloping lesson in a recent Sunny Coast trial win.
7 All Over Bossanova (Bet Now: $4.20 ODDS BOOST) is a quality four year old mare that resumes for the Mel Eggleston yard. This mare has a great record with five wins from eight wins, the latest win coming at the end of last prep with a gritty on speed victory in the Daybreak Lover. Sharp trial win at Ballina and looks ready to go.
2 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $26.00 ODDS BOOST) is a ripper for the Kelly Schweida team that also resumes in this event. He was outstanding during the Winter, including a win at Randwick. Think there will be a couple too sharp for him, but if they go warp speed in front, he is one who could ambush these and have last say for sure.
Race 7. (17:12) Gold Edition Plate 1200m
3 Pierata (Bet Now: $3.00 ODDS BOOST) looks the way to go. Greg Hickman trains this three year old who trialled up a storm prior to resuming in the Winning Rupert where he won like a really good horse. Got lost on the bend and lost a bit of momentum but once he balanced up, he savaged the line and spanked them. Has the run under the belt and the experience around Doomben.
2 Bring It Home Pop (Bet Now: $18.00 ODDS BOOST) is a ripping three year old for the Hansen team who comes through the Winning Rupert where he attempted to lead all the way and tried very hard but was just no match for Pierata. I think if he leads again, he won’t turn the tables, but if ridden with cover, he can get close for sure.
11 Colosimo (Bet Now: $34.00 ODDS BOOST) could be the blowout chance if they go silly on speed. She’ll love the drop back to 1200m I feel after a couple of hard efforts over the 1350m, the latest coming three weeks ago when getting a mile back off them and was game in defeat behind Magnufighter. She is the hard fit filly here and will be strong.
Race 8. (17:47) Lough Neagh Stakes 1350m
9 Privlaka (Bet Now: $8.00 ODDS BOOST) on top. Rob Heathcoate trained galloper who is absolutely low flying at the moment and deserves a crack at this level. He ran at this track/distance last Saturday where he was backed as if unbeatable and ran right up to those expectations with a dominant win. On times and speed figures, he is not far off the George Moore form and he does get weight relief.
7 Snoopy (Bet Now: $4.50 ODDS BOOST) had his first run for the Chris Munce team in the George Moore and you could nearly make a case that he should have won. Got badly held up early in the straight when appearing to be bolting and by the time he got clear, he attacked the line and just missed. Extra 150m and the run under the belt should see him go close.
1 Beauty Flame (Bet Now: $21.00 ODDS BOOST) is a former Hong Kong galloper that had his first run for the Mel O’Gorman camp in the George Moore and on face value, it was just a run, but the race shape just didn’t suit him at all but he was good late. He’ll eat up the 1350m here, has the run under the belt and gets Corey Brown steering.
Race 9. (18:25) Congratulations Jim Roberts On 30 Years Plate (Class 6) 1200m
9 Ringo’s A Rockstar (Bet Now: $6.50) for me in the get out. He can be a hard horse to follow and trust, but gee he looks well placed here. Really liked his effort at this track/distance a fortnight back when getting well back off the speed but worked home with real purpose when fourth to Mishani El Lobo. Draws a sweet gate and gets Brad Stewart on.
12 Care To Think (Bet Now: $6.00) is a smart galloper that resumes for the Matty Dunn team. This bloke created quite the impression in the Winter, with a couple of very strong Highway wins in Sydney signalling he might be above average. Best form is over slightly further, but he did trial really well last week in readiness for this.
2 Charlie Cat (Bet Now: $10.00) is a quality horse for Michael Costa that is first up. He only had the one run in the early part of the Spring, which saw him heavily backed at the Gold Coast and saluting in a race where the subsequent form has been quite good. He has been nominated/accepted/scratched many times since so clearly has had issues but no denying his talent.
