A strong ten race card has been assembled for Sandown this Saturday where it is Zipping Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:25) Merson Cooper Stakes 1000m
Interested in 13 Real Feeling (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS), a Jason Warren trained daughter of Real Impact. She’s had just the one jumpout in readiness for her debut, which came at Mornington when on speed before being clicked up and showed good change up speed in the straight in a good piece of work. Stable can produce a handy juvenile. This girl might continue that record.
10 Geist (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained filly that is on debut. She trialled last Wednesday at Warwick Farm and I really liked the way she moved from off the pace when a narrow second to another good looker in Aeecee Power. Stable has had a pretty quiet start to the season when it comes to juveniles but it was around this time last year that they clicked. Could well begin here.
8 Divine Caprice (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) has had a little freshen up for the Hayes/Dabernig team since running down the straight at Flemington in the Maribyrnong trial when pulling up lame behind the talented Mildred, so there were clear excuses there, and at this stage, Mildred is probably one of the leading juveniles so far this season, so that form reads well, and she gets blinkers on to sharpen her up.
Race 2. (13:00) Sandown Cup 3200m
0700…not the greatest form numbers wise, but 1 Sound (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) looks one of several that I’m keen on at this meeting. Despite what the form guide says, I reckon he’s flying for a race like this. Hampered in the Caulfield Cup but was still good to the line and then the tempo in the Melbourne Cup was clearly against him, and checked a couple of times, but again, good to the line and through. Takes on second tier/third tier horses here for the most part, and I think he puts these away.
4 Azuro (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) is hard to beat. He was good two back in the St Leger behind Hush Writer before going to the Hotham where I thought Yendall gave him every chance but was simply no match late for Downdraft. Better suited at this level and his 3200m record is quite good, placing in this race last year when pipped near the peg by Yogi. He’s a leading chance.
6 Saunter Boy (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is an improver up in trip. This gelding was down the track first up in the Newcastle Cup before going to the Tatts Cup at Randwick when wide no cover for the trip and he just couldn’t go on with it when down the track behind Master Of Wine, who looks a really good staying prospect. He should take some beating against this lot up in trip.
Race 3. (13:35) Twilight Glow Stakes 1400m
Looking at this race with Palurien out. Going the way of 11 Diaquin (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) for Nigel Blackiston. This filly was good two back over 1400m when placing prior to racing over 1200m on a bog surface at Ballarat where she was back near last in the run before presenting wider and in a couple of strides, she put them away and spanked them. Earlier in the prep placed behind Broadwayandfourth, who has since won a Stakes race, so the form reads very well.
Now she’s had a run at 1400m, 2 Xilong (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) should be better for it. Impressive in her first two starts/wins for the prep before racing over 1400m on Cup Day when attempting to lead all the way and giving a really good kick but couldn’t quite see it out when bloused late by Akari and Betcha Flying. She’ll lead, give a really good kick and look the winner.
9 Oasis Girl (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) is an Ellerton/Zahra trained filly who steps up to blacktype company but she’s been pretty good in two runs back from a break, the latest coming over 1300m on Bendigo Cup Day where Meech had her in a sweet spot just off the speed and once she presented the filly with clear air, she was just too good for her rivals and strong to the line, suggesting 1400m will be fine.
Race 4. (14:10) Sandown Stakes 1500m
Looking for the horse with the best change up speed and 5 William Thomas (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) has that. Lumped the big weight over 1400m on Cup Day and was given a peach by Olly but couldn’t quite hold out Bravo Tango, who had the better grounding for a strong 1400m and was too good, just. Gets really good weight relief, can box seat and with a soft tempo on the cards, his turn of foot will be vital.
Back on a bigger track and at 1500m are the two big ticks that will certainly help the veteran 1 Widgee Turf (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS). He was a short priced elect in the VOBIS Gold Star at the Valley on Manikato Night and Billy Egan rode the perfect race on the gelding, but just found Iconoclasm too tough. Back a bit in depth, and off a more genuine tempo, ridden cold, he’ll be hard to hold out.
This is one of the easier races that 7 Vassilator (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) has contested in some time, so an improved showing wouldn’t entirely shock. He was back in the run in the Sale Cup and with the tempo being soft, he really had no chance of winning and didn’t do a bad job in defeat I thought. Better suited on the bigger track and the tempo should be more genuine.
Race 5. (14:45) Doveton Stakes 1000m
3 Easy Eddie (Bet Now: $4.40) finds a suitable race I think. He’s a sprinter, a pure sprinter, so back to 1000m from 1300m looks a big tick. He tried hard two weeks ago in the Redzel but that trip at that level just found him out when ninth to Pierata, but was only beaten a couple of lengths. Gets the drag over via Faatinah, follows him, and Zahra on, he’s hard to beat.
If this track was rock hard firm, I’d be all over 1 Faatinah (Bet Now: $7.00). 1000m looks his bread and butter, as seen the past couple of years when he’s ventured to Meydan. Last couple of runs have been okay in much stronger races, the latest in the Manikato when 1200m was a bridge too far. Like him back to 1000m, he’ll roll along…give in the ground is the only query here given there is rain forecast for Friday.
2 Crystal Dreamer (Bet Now: $4.40) is a key threat in a tricky race. This veteran scored a big win first up at Caulfield in the Heath (1100m) before being freshened up and racing in the Caulfield Sprint where Miss Leonidas got a picnic in front and dominated proceedings, but I didn’t mind the way Crystal Dreamer found the line. Draws well and this is a winnable race for mine.
Race 6. (15:25) Kevin Heffernan Stakes 1300m
If 4 D’Bai (Bet Now: $2.90) is right, he just simply beats these. Classy gelding for Charlie Appleby that returns to Australia, where he last raced. He hasn’t raced since the Sydney Autumn when wide no cover in the All Aged and couldn’t finish it off behind Pierata, and was found to be 1/5 lame, so there were clear excuses. He’s very good right, and better than these I think.
7 Order Of Command (Bet Now: $9.50) is working up to a win for sure. Some thought that win would come on Derby Day two weeks ago and tried hard, but was no match for Kemalpasa, who is absolutely flying at the moment. A step up to 1300m should suit this guy for an in form stable and from gate two, Williams should land him just off what looks a genuine tempo.
6 Ringerdingding (Bet Now: $8.50) is the big watch. This bloke has had a few homes throughout time but is now with Anthony Freedman. Contested the Kingsford Smith and Stradbroke during the Brisbane Winter and ran okay but for the most part was outclassed. This looks more his level and we know his best is clearly good enough to beat these. Watch the market and see what it does.
Race 7. (16:00) Sandown Guineas 1600m
Big track and 1600m is a big tick for 4 Heart Of Puissance (Bet Now: $4.60). He looks a very raw horse but loaded with talent. Produced a brilliant finale to win on debut at Warrnambool before going to the Valley where he looked drunk around the turn but balanced up and savaged the line to get the job done. Confident he measures up against a good bunch of three year olds.
10 Pretty Brazen (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for the McEvoy team. This girl was impressive two back when winning at Caulfield before racing at this trip on Cup Day when back, wide with cover, and finishing off strongly to run a close up fifth to Akari in a blanket finish, with a length separating the first five. She isn’t going backwards re form and should prove hard to beat here.
9 Defend (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting one. The Price/Kent stable trains this three year old, who comes here off the back of a ten length romp to break the maiden tag at Cranbourne on Cup Day. Admittedly they went barrier trial speed, but he still spanked them and did it with plenty in hand. Debut run was good and the form out of that has been excellent so don’t dismiss him.
Race 8. (16:40) Zipping Classic 2400m
Surely…surely 1 Humidor (Bet Now: $4.40) beats these. If he can’t take care of this lot, then he’s in trouble in terms of winning again. Ran in the Mackinnon last Saturday and I think just put a line through that run given he was wide no cover for the trip and the tempo was an absolute crawl, so forget he went around. The two runs prior suggested he might be back on track, and if he’s anywhere near right, he beats these.
5 Southern France (Bet Now: $3.40) was a late nomination for this race so I find him a very interesting. He was fancied by some leading into the Melbourne Cup but had no luck, sitting wide throughout and was a beaten horse early on in the straight. Like him back to this sort of level…back to 2400m and whether or not he has the speed in the legs remains to be seen.
10 Miss Siska (Bet Now: $9.50) is on the seven day back up for the Grahame Begg team after racing in the Matriarch last Saturday when on speed and she gave a really good kick when asked for the big effort but couldn’t quite finish it off in a thrilling finish, just getting pipped by Oceanex. Unknown at 2400m, but has the right racing pattern and overall, this race isn’t strong.
Race 9. (17:20) Summoned Stakes 1500m
11 Vanuatu (Bet Now: $3.90) has returned in very good order. Resumed with a good win from off the pace on Cranbourne Cup Day before racing in the Tesio at the Valley when trying to make a sustained run from the back and was close up behind Amangiri. Form out of that was okay last Saturday in the Matriarch but with this mare, I reckon back to 1500m and third up, she’s likeable.
Giving respect to 2 Jamaican Rain (Bet Now: $7.50), who is second up for the Richard Laming stable. He resumed in the Tristarc when wide no cover for the trip and fought on well but the last 50-100m just told and he ran out of condition. Draws better this time around and I think she can take him straight to the front and control proceedings, proving hard to beat.
1 Noire (Bet Now: $7.00) has been a touch disappointing this time in but her best is clearly good enough to beat these. She comes through the Empire Rose two weeks ago when back in the run on a day where those near the speed were advantaged and she really had no chance but battled away pretty well in defeat. This looks a more suitable assignment and isn’t badly treated at the weights.
Race 10. (17:55) Eclipse Stakes 1800m
4 Setting Sail (Bet Now: $2.10) just beats these if he brings over his UK form. Very handy animal for Charlie Appleby who makes his Australian debut off the back of some very good on speed efforts at his past few, winning a couple, and the overall form around him is strong, with subsequent Group l form around him with a host of winners as well. Think he either leads/box seats and is very hard to beat in the last.
1 Pacodali (Bet Now: $5.00) has to be respected here. Lindsey Smith trains this gelding, who comes through the Kyneton Cup from last Wednesday where he had to lump 62kg and hit the front, looking home for a few strides, but couldn’t quite finish it off with the big weight when third to Midterm. Gets weight relief and I reckon back to 1800m will really suit him.
3 Plein Ciel (Bet Now: $6.50) is flying and is just bursting to win a race. I think he’s a leading chance here. Tempo was against him in the Cranbourne Cup two back before racing over 1800m on Cup Day and found the line strongly from the back behind Yulong Prince. All runs this prep have been good without much luck so if the breaks go his way here, I think he can win.
