Saturday racing in Queensland this weekend heads back to the Sunny Coast where it is Queensland Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:12) Poolpro.com.au Handicap (2MW) 1000m
Really good to see 2 Tumbler (Bet Now: $1.90) back at the races. She’s a high quality mare for Barry Lockwood who dipped her toe into the blacktype company in the Victory Stakes and she really struggled on the Eagle Farm surface, so she was tipped out. Resumes off an outstanding trial and she’s lethal when produced fresh.
1 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $4.00) is lining up for his third race in as many weeks but he seems to be loving it, as we saw last Saturday at Doomben where he scored an effortless win, aided by a peach of a ride from Lloyd, who had the horse parked behind the speed and pounced at the right time when clear. Great record on his home track and rates highly.
Taking the chance on 5 Royal Occasion (Bet Now: $10.00). Natalie McCall trained sprinter who resumes here and it does look as though it could well be a target race fresh. He is hot and cold at times but his form in Brisbane does read very well for this, and a recent trial behind the classy mare Tumbler was outstanding. Brilliant record first up and he’ll be charging late.
Race 2. (12:47) Pool Pro Celebrating 25 Years Handicap (70) 1200m
10 Muddy Rope (Bet Now: $4.60) is a talented gelding for Chris Anderson who resumed on a soft track over 1000m at Ipswich where he was heavily backed to win fresh but I don’t think he got around the tight track all that well. Back onto his home track and with the run under the belt, I’m expecting a sharp bounce back.
16 Unchartered (Bet Now: $16.00) is a three year old filly for Darby Racing that resumes for Stuart Kendrick. She produced some really good efforts at the 1400m-1600m distance range, with her prep ending with a narrow second over the mile here. Looked sharp in a recent trial here and looks forward enough to sprint well fresh.
11 Limestone Cowboy (Bet Now: $9.50) is a nice type for the Kendrick yard who looks a threat here for sure. He ran over 1100m here last time out where he got a mile back off the speed and had to make his ground near the inside, which wasn’t the best spot to be. Does like racing on his home track here and is down in the weights.
Race 3. (13:22) Neptune Pumps For Swimming Pools Handicap (90) 1400m
9 Bushy (Bet Now: $4.20) has been outstanding in two runs back from a break for the Gary Duncan yard. On the quick back up after racing over 1350m at Doomben last Saturday where he was given a 12/10 by Jimmy Orman and it was the ride that got him home. Can only improve off that fitness wise and is on his home track here.
7 Banda Spice (Bet Now: $4.00) drops miles in grade here for Stuart Kendrick. This mare comes through the Glasshouse where she sat midfield in the run and just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Monsieur Gustave. Last time she was at this level, she won impressively, so she’s a definite threat.
12 Comacina (Bet Now: $17.00) is a handy gelding that resumes for the John Meagher yard. This bloke is best suited at 2000m+, but he has looked quite forward in a couple of trials, the latest coming on Tuesday at Doomben in a trial that included Yankee Rose and he looked to go nicely. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 4. (14:02) Pool Pro Quality Chemicals Handicap 1200m
3 Saxton Rock (Bet Now: $8.00) looks one of the hardest to beat here. Matty Dunn trained juvenile who did a great job here two weeks back in the feature 2YO race. Got a mile back off the speed and had to make his move nearer the inside, which clearly wasn’t the spot to be, but he finished off his race as well as anything. Keen on him here.
10 Lady Lark (Bet Now: $6.00) was really good against the bias/tempo first up in the Bill Carter behind Cellargirl before going to the Winning Edge where she may have had the second up syndrome behind Curdled. Convinced she is better than that and she has enough credits in the bank at this level to forgive her for that.
18 Pinch Passion (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Robert Heathcoate trained youngster who resumes here. He had two runs back in the Autumn, both at Doomben, and both times he was far from disgraced. I think he will be ideally suited here on the big track and I didn’t mind the way he moved in a recent Doomben trial.
Race 5. (14:42) Become A Pool Pro Stockist Handicap (Class 6) 1600m
9 Biantic (Bet Now: $4.40) for me here in a lottery. Mayfield Smith trained galloper who deserves a crack at metro grade after a dominant win last time out over 1400m at the Gold Coast where he sat back off them and came with a nice finishing burst under Harrison to win, clocking some of the better sectionals for the meeting. Looks a good each way play for mine.
12 Lascar (Bet Now: $9.50) was a drifter in betting when resuming over 1400m here on June 11 but the market got it somewhat wrong as he finished off hard late to run second to Rothabye. Been given over a month since that run and looked to trial well a couple of weeks back at Doomben behind Frespanol.
10 Blooming Tycoon (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Deagon based mare who will be hoping that the track firms up because that has been her downfall in recent starts, the latest over the mile at Doomben when finishing down the track behind Court’s Star. Draws the inside gate and gets the claim, so there are a couple of things going her way. Just needs good weather.
Race 6. (15:22) Pool Pro- Simply A Better Choice Plate (Class 6) 1200m
6 Barnsley (Bet Now: $7.00) is on the quick back up for the Duncan camp after racing here on Sunday where it was quite frankly a poor ride from Jeff Lloyd. Got a mile back off a fast speed and instead of coming wide, he elected to stay near the inside and was held up for a few strides, which cost him the win. Harder here, but he is proven in town.
2 Agapantha (Bet Now: $11.00) is back with Tony Gollan after a stint with Lindsay Hatch where he strung together a couple of wins at Toowoomba and was impressive in doing so. Different kettle of fish here, but he is a horse who is in ripping form, and Gollan is very good at getting an extra gear out of tried horses.
5 Tansy (Bet Now: $11.00) could be an improver here at odds. Mayfield-Smith trained sprinter who was just fair fresh behind Rare Occurrence before being freshened, trialling well and then going to the Gold Coast where he worked home with purpose behind Drumbeat’s Choice. Stewart goes on now from a nice gate and he handles all conditions.
Race 7. (16:02) Pool Pro Queensland Cup 3200m
8 Paragon (Bet Now: $13.00) for me in a lottery. Did a great job in defeat two back in the Ipswich Cup behind Self Sense before going to the Caloundra Cup here where the tempo was clearly against him but he fought on well in defeat behind Supply And Demand. The brutal two miles will really suit this one batter and I think he could be last man standing.
4 My Diamantine (Bet Now: $3.60) is a mare who has been outstanding at her past couple. You could make a case that she should have won the Tatts Cup when an unlucky fourth to Rudy before going to the Caloundra Cup where she got checked/held up on the turn and in the end, that may have cost her the win when second to Supply And Demand. Gives the impression she’ll eat up the two miles here and rates highly.
13 Qabla (Bet Now: $81.00) is a stayer who rises sharply in grade but he gives the impression the 3200m will be no issue. He ran over 2200m at Grafton last Sunday where he got well back in the run and though never a winning threat, I thought he worked home well late behind First Crush. Not sure he can win, but certainly one for exotics.
Race 8. (16:37) Pool Pro Is Proudly Australian Owned Handicap 1000m
6 Jadedfox (Bet Now: $13.00) looks a nice type for Barry Lockwood who resumed at Doomben a couple of Wednesdays back and worked home well on a leaders track that day behind Beat Street. Doesn’t read great, but the third horse from that race, Khalama, came out and won last Saturday at Doomben so the form has been franked in town. Big tick.
2 Oink (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented gelding for Kelly Schweida who will love the drop in grade, and even the freshen up. He took on the best 3YO’s during the Carnival and though outclassed, he ran really well most times. Back to 1000m is perfect, he is the class factor and he does seem to be a horse who thrives on bigger tracks.
6 Jadedfox (Bet Now: $12.00) looks a nice type for Barry Lockwood who resumed at Doomben a couple of Wednesdays back and worked home well on a leaders track that day behind Beat Street. Doesn’t read great, but the third horse from that race, Khalama, came out and won last Saturday at Doomben so the form has been franked in town. Big tick.
Race 9. (17$18) Pool Pro- Products Professionals Use Plate (Class 3) 1400m
7 Lord Marmaduke (Bet Now: $6.50) can be a bit hit and miss at times but I think I can trust him now his confidence is up. That will be because Vandyke sent him to Ballina for a kill and he got that, winning by a space, leading all the way and running decent time for the meeting. Back on his home track now and looks hard to beat.
11 Natural Black (Bet Now: $9.00) is a talented three year old for the Liam Birchley camp and we know how much the stable love to come to this Carnival and rarely leave without a win. This horse has been a bit costly to follow in recent times but certain things in running just haven’t gone his way. On his best, he goes very close to beating these.
12 Tap This (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy mare for John Meagher who is on the seven day back up after racing at Doomben last Saturday where I thought she was very good late, closing off with purpose late to run fourth to Abohar. Looks much better suited on a bigger track and I like she is on the quick turnaround.
