Blacktype racing returns to Rosehill this Saturday where it is Winter Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out 6.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:30) #theraces Handicap 1400m
4 Siege Of Quebec (Bet Now: $2.30) is a beautifully bred colt for Coolmore and the Waterhouse/Bott yard who debuted at Newcastle where he was crunched in betting and the punters got it spot on as he led all the way under Avdulla and fought on strongly, which is what he showed in the trials. Maps well here and I think he will lap up the 1400m.
2 Calculated (Bet Now: $3.20) is another lovely colt, this one for Chris Waller. He resumed last Wednesday at Canterbury where he was crunched late in the market and despite a few nervous moments, he got the win. What pricked my ears was what Waller said post race. He said this horse could be good enough to reach a Cox Plate in due course. Waller rarely makes big statements like that.
1 Colesberg (Bet Now: $12.00) is the watch for me here. Congrats gelding that resumes for David Payne. He ran three times during the Autumn, starting off with a debut win at Warwick Farm over subsequent Stakes winner Single Bullet before a couple of really good efforts in Slipper lead ups. 1400m fresh looks ideal, and you always have to respect the stable.
Race 2. (12:05) Book Spring Hospitality @ atc.com.au Handicap (85) 1350m
Back Me: Siding with 2 Hetty Heights (Bet Now: $8.50). Talented mare for Kim Waugh who did a really good job here a fortnight back when resuming, closing off with real purpose behind a slow tempo to run third to Magic Alibi. Should come right on from that and there does appear to be good speed engaged. She gets her chance.
3 Girl Sunday (Bet Now: $4.60) will welcome the drop back to her own sex after contesting the Civic Stakes here a fortnight back where she was a bit outclassed and just copped a bit too much pressure on speed behind Gold Symphony. Senior jock goes on now and she does appear to map well despite the sticky draw.
8 Lani Girl (Bet Now: $20.00) has been given a little freshen up since racing over 1400m at Randwick on June 10 where she got back off the pace and never really looked likely but her final 150m behind Heavenly Anna was very good., Run prior behind Pelethronius was a ripper and that form has held up. Must for exotics.
Race 3. (12:40) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1100m
11 Star Aspiration (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Canberra filly for the Dryden/Collings yard who has been very good in recent times on the Acton track back home. Ran over 1000m on that track last time out and worked home hard when a close up third to Major Sharpe. 1100m looks ideal and stable should always be respected when they come to town.
5 Surprise Party (Bet Now: $4.40) is a smart looking Commands filly that resumes for the Matty Dale yard. This filly has won two of three, with a failure at Moruya splitting the wins. Resumes with no trials, but I’m sure she has had a jump out or two back home, and first up in town tells me she’s forward enough to win.
4 Settlers (Bet Now: $101.00) is a nice type for the Jeremy Sylvester yard who could take some beating here at a price. Stuck on well two back over the 900m at Cessnock before going to Tamworth on June 24 where he got back and worked home well late behind Epic Decision. His prior form does read very well for this and gets the claim for Van Der Werf.
Race 4. (13:15) Pro Rata ATC Membership On Sale Handicap (78) 1800m
2 High Mist (Bet Now: $8.50) is a bit costly to follow but he finds a very winnable race here. Chris Waller trained galloper who has been knocking on the door to win a race and this does look his race. Really good effort last time out over 1500m here where he looked a bit bogged down with the wet track. Firmer footing here and up to 1800m is a big tick.
8 Walk The Streets (Bet Now: $6.50) is another that is costly to follow but she does look one of the hardest to beat here. Chris Waller filly who took on the mares last time out over 1900m here where she looked the winner but was nabbed near the line by Rustic Melody. Back to 1800m and back to her own age is perfect. D-Day.
6 Barbass (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Cameron Crockett trained three year old who was well backed to win a Highway at this track/distance two weeks back where he was ridden a treat by Bowman and loomed to win the race but just couldn’t quite finish it off. Comes back to his own age now and with the 1800m run under the belt, he should be better off here.
Race 5. (13:50) The Everest Is Coming Handicap (75) 1200m
Giving 3 Clear The Beach (Bet Now: $8.00) another chance here. Really sharp first up win before a game third at Randwick before being dreadful behind Pelethronius. Ordered back to the trials and won very nicely at Wyong. Keen to see him back on top of the ground because I’m convinced he’s good.
6 Sonic Swish (Bet Now: $7.00) is a talented gelding that resumes for Chris Waller. His best form is over a bit further, but he does have a very good record when produced fresh and his most recent trial behind Baltic Whisper was sharp to the eye and he does appear forward enough to run well first up.
8 Dam Ready (Bet Now: $10.00) is a very interesting runner here. Hayes/Dabernig runner from Melbourne who was highly talked up prior to the start of this prep off the back of some lovely efforts at the trials/jump outs, but his two runs have just been fair. His form from the Summer reads very well for this. Gate is the worry.
Race 6. (14:30) Winning Post Restaurant Handicap (93) 1200m
8 Washington Heights (Bet Now: $5.50) is the most interesting runner on the program for mine. Back with Gerald Ryan after beginning his career here before being jetted off to Hong Kong where he won a couple of races. Back with Gerald and gee he trialled brilliantly on Monday to the eye, and I always like horses trialling/racing within seven days.
7 Princefamous (Bet Now: $12.00) should be forgiven for his first up flop here a fortnight back I feel. His trials leading in were very good and he was well in the market here first up but he just didn’t let down at all, and I think he just isn’t a wet tracker, so the firmer footing will help and I am happy to give him another chance.
3 Forget (Bet Now: $71.00) is a handy galloper that resumes for the Kim Waugh yard. He normally takes a run or two to find his feet, but his form from last prep reads better than anything engaged here, with last prep seeing him resume and close off nicely behind Grande Punto before runs behind Redzel and Burning Passion. Wyong trial last week was solid and I’d watch the market with him.
Race 7. (15:10) ATC Winter Stakes 1400m
The knockout chance for me is clearly 13 Extensible (Bet Now: $6.00). Quality mare for Team Snowden who didn’t get much luck from the wide gate in the Civic a fortnight back and rightfully faded out of the finish after the work she did. Draws the paint now and McEvoy steers. Look for a sharp bounce back.
3 Burning Passion (Bet Now: $5.00) was, I thought, just a wet tracker, but he showed last start in the Healy he is more than that. Got right up near the inside on a firm surface under Michael Cahill and drew clear late. He has a good record at Rosehill and though the stable switch, I don’t think that will be a negative, plus he loves being produced fresh.
I think the value clearly lies here with 11 Man Of His Word (Bet Now: $14.00). This horse does have a few tricks up his sleeve but when he is on, he is a very good horse and certainly up to this level. His effort last time out in the Glasshouse was outstanding I thought given he was back/wide on a track which suited those near the speed. Stable doesn’t mind sending them to Sydney and they should be watched closely.
Race 8. (15:50) Schweppes Handicap (78) 2000m
3 Collateral (Bet Now: $5.50) just picks himself here doesn’t he. Won four straight before going to Warwick Farm last Saturday and to be frank, it was a slaughter from Heywood, and he admitted post race it wasn’t a good ride. Should have won, but tactics cost him. Clark back on, good draw, hard fit, little depth…wins.
13 King Kiv (Bet Now: $19.00) comes through the Kingsguard race here two weeks ago and I thought his effort to get as close as he did was very good because the tempo was clearly against him, he was a couple of months between runs and 1500m fresh. 2000m is the query, but he gives the impression he will handle it.
2 Signposted (Bet Now: $7.00) was a horse I was keen on last Wednesday over 1900m at Canterbury and he nearly got the chocolates but was outgunned late and had to settle for third. Rises back up to Saturday grade where he looks to map very nicely. Would love the track to have more give in it for him.
Race 9. (16:30) Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1500m
2 Reneged (Bet Now: $4.20) proved too good for them two back at Canterbury before racing at this track/distance two weeks back where he seemingly had every chance near the speed and looked the winner but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Kingsguard. This looks a shade easier and I am with him here.
4 Flow (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented three year old for Godolphin and James Cummings who should measure up here. This gelding was a strong winner two back at Kembla Grange before going to the Sunny Coast Guineas where he sat on speed and fought on strongly when second to Crack Me Up. Takes on the older horses here, but looks well placed and rates highly to my eye.
1 Four Carat (Bet Now: $26.00) is a handy stayer that resumes for Chris Waller. His best form is clearly at 2000m+, but he can spring out a decent run fresh and his trials leading up to his return to racing have been quite encouraging. Not sure he can win, but I think he is a must for exotics in an open affair.
