WA racing this Saturday continues at Belmont where it is Beaufine Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:34) The Tabtouch Masters Handicap (78+) 2100m
4 Rosewood Hill (Bet Now: $2.80) for me in what looks a two horse race. I think you have to forgive her for the failure last Saturday. Young Kersley jumped on and not his fault, but the horse just got stuck in a pocket and this mare is one who needs to wind up with momentum, and she does seem to do that best with Pike on, and he is on.
3 Gatting (Bet Now: $1.75) is on the seven day back up. This classy 3YO comes through the Aquanita last Saturday where he did an enormous job in defeat given he was back and wide for a large portion of the race and that effort just told when it mattered, settling for fourth to Variation. Takes on the older horses, but small field will help his cause.
5 Dark Musket (Bet Now: $13.00) will appreciate the drop in grade/depth after contesting the Strickland Stakes last time out where the soft track/WFA was against him but I thought his effort was more than sound behind Scales Of Justice. No horse of that class here. Well weighted too given his rating.
Race 2. (15:14) Get The Tabtouch Plate 1200m
6 Ritualistic (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Rogano gelding on debut here and I think he can run a race here at odds. He has been given three trials to prepare for his debut, with the lone one this prep coming last week at Lark Hill where he looked very good in winning. Awkward draw but I’ll take the chance on him.
2 Cognac (Bet Now: $5.00) is the form runner engaged here and though a risk at six furlongs, I think he has to be respected. He ran over 1000m here a fortnight back where he sat outside the speed and toughed it out very strongly to finish best in scoring a narrow but impressive victory. If he runs 1200m, he’ll go close.
10 Ask Lisa (Bet Now: $13.00) started bolters odds when debuting in that Cognac race mentioned above but despite that quote, I thought she ran a beauty in defeat when closing off with purpose to run third. With natural improvement, I think she can turn the tables and rates highly for me at a price.
Race 3. (15:54) D'Orsogna Handicap (72+) 1300m
1 Profit Street (Bet Now: $3.80) is the hard fit who is in form and looks the logical second pick. He ran over 1400m here two weeks ago and was given every chance by Pike but he just didn’t quite run the 1400m out on the wet track. Back to the 1300m and a dry track, plus the claim for Randy Tan, should see him attack the line better.
8 Helms Gate (Bet Now: $5.50) was horrible when racing here three weeks back behind stablemate Luke’s Gold where he was heavily backed but didn’t pull up 100% post race.He is much better than that, and provided he comes through that race okay, he should take a power of beating here.
9 Uptown Funk (Bet Now: $8.50) is a handy mare who ran fourth to Galaxy Star in that race mentioned above and while beaten a fair way, I thought she wasn’t too bad given she was nearer the inside, and on that day, the inside was pretty much like quicksand. Firmer footing should help and is a must for exotics.
Race 4. (16:33) Old Mates Sports Bar & Eatery Handicap 1200m
7 Show Honey (Bet Now: $14.00) gets the nod for me in a cracking 3YO race. She ran over this track/distance a fortnight back against the older horses and she produced a brilliant finishing burst from the back nab Bold Success, who looks a good thing in the next. Draws awkwardly, but back to her own age now and I think she will better on the firm ground.
2 Enchanted Dream (Bet Now: $3.40) is a high quality filly resumes for the Ben Pearce. She swept all before in the Summer, ending the campaign with a Magic Millions win over the well above average Ellicazoom. Looked very good in a Lark Hill trial last week and she is a bomb when produced fresh.
9 Patapus (Bet Now: $27.00) toughed it out really strongly when resuming over 1000m here two weeks back. She sat on a hot speed and though not looking entirely happy on the wet track, she stuck on really well behind High Conviction. Draws a lovely stalking gate here and did win second up last time in.
Race 5. (17:10) The Gate Bar & Bistro Leading Rider Handicap (1MW) 1200m
9 Bold Success (Bet Now: $2.90) looks a standout here. Team Williams trained galloper who resumed at this track/distance two weeks ago and was given every chance by Pike, and the ride did deserve the win but was nabbed late by the hard fit Show Honey. Should only improve off that and he only has to overcome the draw to win.
1 Belter (Bet Now: $4.50) did a huge job to win fresh here at 1000m after doing work on speed before racing at the same track/distance where he looked to struggle on the wet track. Much better suited on top of the ground and does draw to get a sweet run just off the pace. Good quinella horse.
11 Jupiter Rising (Bet Now: $34.00) isn’t really one of my horses but he does try hard and is always thereabouts. Ran here last Wednesday on a wet track and just struggled to pick his feet. Draws to get a suck run behind Belter and from there, he can whack away and perhaps sneak a place at good odds.
Race 6. (17:45) Inglis Bloodstock Leading Trainer Handicap (1MW) 1650m
7 Nelson’s Flight (Bet Now: $2.70) looks the way to go here. Michael Morton trained gelding who ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and aided by a lovely steer from Pike, the four year old kicked hard on speed to get the win. Looks to map superbly once again and gets Pike steering.
9 Indi Pacific (Bet Now: $12.00) looks close to win off the back of an excellent effort at this track/distance two weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run but finished off with real purpose to run second to Election. Provided she doesn’t get too far back here, she’ll take some beating.
11 Mossman Flyer (Bet Now: $81.00) could be a big improver here at odds. Cliff Green trained gelding who resumed in the Detango race here recently and only whacked away near the inside. The things in his favour are that he is a wet tracker, he’s fitter and second up last time in he was three lengths off Falcon Crest. That reads well for this.
Race 7. (18:20) Beaufine Stakes 1000m
Hoping it will be class to the fore via 1 First Among Equals (Bet Now: $2.70). Simon Miller trained sprinter who was a sharp first up winner of the Northam Stakes before going to the Goodwood where he was in the carpark for the trip and couldn’t come on behind Vega Magic. if he carries the weight, he’ll be winning.
4 Dendee (Bet Now: $9.50) is a quality mare who resumes for the Dan Morton yard. This mare hasn’t raced for 11 weeks since racing over 1400m at Ascot and finishing down the track behind Key To Fame. She is absolutely lethal when produced fresh and the big lead here is that Pike is steering.
If they overdo it in front, a horse like 11 Woolibar (Bet Now: $8.50) could come to the fore. He is a get back/run on type who is three weeks between runs where he raced here and loomed to win but couldn’t quite finish it off. If the breaks go his way, he is certainly up to these and could surprise.
Race 8. (18:57) WA Bookmakers Association Leading Apprentice Handicap (66+) 1400m
Not really a race I want to dove into but I’m siding with 11 Royal Missile (Bet Now: $3.60). Simon Miller trained filly who ran over 1300m here two weeks back and tried hard but was no match for the potential Group l horse that is Galaxy Star. No horse of that class and she only has to overcome the nasty gate to go close.
13 Messiah (Bet Now: $17.00) is a talented type from Albany who ran over 1400m at Pinjarra on June 29 where Pike got him back to near last on the rail yet worked home strongly late to run a close up second to Kingdom And Empire. Should get a sweet trip from the gate here and rates highly.
15 Romelo (Bet Now: $14.00) is a talented stayer that resumes for the Durrant/Miller stable after formerly being with Team Williams. This former kiwi, who has had a couple of preps in WA, is better suited over further, but a Lark Hill trial last week was quite encouraging and she can pull out a run fresh.
