The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:45pm) : Coates Hire Wagga Maiden Plate 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Strong maiden to kick off Cup Day. Despite the wide draw, I’m leaning with Istanbul (Best Odds: $8.50). He resumed at Goulburn and worked home strongly when third to Renesmee, who is well above average. Istanbul then went to Rosehill and wasn’t 100% happy in the heavy conditions when fourth to Puzzling Wonder. Firmer track and a drop in grade should see the gelding prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: The Gerald Ryan gelding Mchawi (Best Odds: $6.00) is racing very well at the moment, but just can’t quite crack it for a win. He sat on speed last time out at Wyong and toughed it out very strongly when running third to Sleepwalker. Second home was Hostwin Pegasus, and that horse won on the weekend at Gosford to frank the form. Horror draw, but is the best horse in the race and is drawn near a speed runner in Give It Away.
Roughie: Angus Rock (Best Odds: $21.00) resumed over 1000m here and was a real eye catcher when storming home from last to run fifth. He ran well second up over 1300m here last time in, and a world class rider in Danny Beasley takes the ride. He’ll have to go back from the wide gate I suspect, but a likely hot speed should give him every chance to run on.

Race Two (1:20pm) : Walsh & Blair Lawyers Handicap (Class 1) 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Leaning towards Old Habits (Best Odds: $9.00), who resumes for Kurt Goldman. The son of Tale Of The Cat won on debut at Goulburn in December before going to Kembla and sticking on strongly when third to Sting, who is well above average. Shinn back aboard first up is a really good lead, and although drawn awkwardly, he should prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: Good Luck Charlie (Best Odds: $18.00) was freshened up from failing in the Albury Guineas (1400m) and ran an encouraging second here over 1300m a couple of weeks ago behind Fiercely Defiant, who is a city class horse on his day. Back to the 1200m looks ideal because last time out he did pull hard outside the speed, so a more genuine tempo looks more to his liking.
Roughie: Tothecoastandback (Best Odds: $14.00) resumed over 1000m here a couple of weeks back and worked home very strongly when third to McLennan, getting back in the run before peeling wide and letting down. He ran over this track/distance second up last time in and was caught wide behind Dantains Spirit, who has won a few races since and started favourite in a heat of the Provincial Championship. Pretty good form for this race.

Race Three (1:55pm) : Wagga Marketplace Handicap (60) 1300m: Form Guide
Back Me: Fiercely Defiant (Best Odds: $3.30) looks the bet of the program here. He ran over this track/distance last time out and bolted up, winning by four lengths. Has gate one here, and only has to rise a kilo. I’ll be surprised if he gets rolled here.
Big Danger: Poncherello (Best Odds: $5.00) is trained by Gerald Ryan who went to Goulburn on debut, and thanks to a lovely ride from Avdulla, the son of Duporth proved far too good for his rivals. Prior to that he trialled well behind Hidden Warrior, who has been excellent in two Stakes runs since. Form reads well and should be competitive, even from the horror draw.
Roughie: Nriangi (Best Odds: $18.00) ran over this track/distance last start and ran well when running third to Zatigeroo, beaten a long neck. Prior to that he ran fifth to Bulletproof Monk at Muswellbrook, and that horse has won since, so the form reads well, and now he draws well with Tommy Berry aboard.

Race Four (2:30pm) : GWS Giants Handicap (Class 3) 1000m: Form Guide
Back Me: Really keen on To A Degree (Best Odds: $3.80) here. He has won his opening three runs this time, though at his last start he had to work hard for it, so I like the fact that trainer Tricia Anderson has freshened him up for the Carnival. Souquet sticks, draws well, and his best win did come first up, beating home a subsequent winner. Extremely hard to beat here.
Big Danger: Meteoros (Best Odds: $7.50) resumes here for Brett Cavanough after just one run in the Summer, which was at Wangaratta when fifth to Bay Of Biscay. He usually does need a couple of runs to find his best, but he draws well and has Shinn aboard.
Roughie: Sky Mission (Best Odds: $18.00) was pretty game in defeat last time out when fourth to McLennan given he was three wide on speed. He loomed to win with about 200m to go, but he just felt the pinch late. He again draws wide, which is the concern, but he is tough and rock hard fit, which is something the top two tips are not.

Race Five (3:05pm) : The Rules Club 2015 Queen Of The South (70) 1400m: Form Guide
Back Me: Adequacy (Best Odds: $13.00) earned her spot in the field by winning first up in the Prelude to this race, coming from off the speed and sprinting hard late to win. She did have support in betting that afternoon, so the signs were there she was going to run well. She won second up last time after a poor first up run, so the fact she won first up this prep tells me she has come back in great order.
Big Danger: Tears In Heaven (Best Odds: $4.60) is trained by Tracey Bartley who scored a strong win first up at Hawkesbury before going to Newcastle and making up a stack of ground to run third to Haut Haut after bungling the start. Her lone 1400m run came on Boxing Day at Randwick when third to Mary Lou, and Tears In Heaven is a far better mare now. Hard to beat.
Roughie: Price War (Best Odds: $10.00) bounced back to form with a strong win last time out at Nowra, sitting just off the speed and finishing best. That was on a soft7 track over the mile, so fitness won’t be an issue here, and a fast run 1400m looks ideal.

Race Six (3:45pm) : Audi Centre Wagga 2015 MTC Guineas (70) 1600m: Form Guide
Back Me: It’s hard to go against Baylie Louise (Best Odds: $6.50). She was very impressive when winning the Prelude over 1400m a couple of weeks back, sitting off the speed and powering home near the inside to win and win with real authority. Up to 1600m looks perfect, she’s in great winning form…no reason to go against her.
Big Danger: Reaper (Best Odds: $10.00) has strung together two wins on the bounce from his last two outings, with the latest being an all the way victory over the mile at Hawkesbury, beating home an above average type in Maurus. He’ll be out of trouble on speed here, and at Wagga Wagga, that can be an advantage, especially on a firm track.
Roughie: High Opinion (Best Odds: $7.00) comes back to his home track after contesting the Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) where he didn’t have the best of luck behind Jim’s Journey. His form prior to Morphettville was excellent, especially here on his home track. With normal luck, he is definitely a winning chance here.

Race Seven (4:25pm) : Jam Media 2015 Wagga Wagga Gold Cup 2000m: Form Guide
Back Me: It was hard not to be impressed by the win of Gypsy Diamond (Best Odds: $3.40) last time out in the JRA Plate (2000m), sprinting home hard from near last to round up Leebaz and win. Leebaz came out and beat a crack field in the Hollindale last Saturday, so she has the right form, and given the owner is a Wagga local, this mare will be tuned right up to win this race.
Big Danger: Our Voodoo Prince (Best Odds: $7.00) ran eighth in the JRA Plate, and I think he can be forgiven for his failure given it was a very slow tempo, and it was a soft, and both of those elements don’t suit this horse. Firmer surface here and a more genuine speed should see him be right in the finish.
Roughie: Trade Commissioner (Best Odds: $7.50) won this race in brilliant fashion and is on target to defend his title after an eye catching seventh a couple of weeks back in the Victoria Handicap (1400m) behind Amorino, making up a stack of ground late. The query with him is the leap from 1400m to 2000m. Last year he had several runs at around 1800m-2000m before coming here, so he is on the fresh side, but it’s hard to doubt the method of Chris Waller.

Race Eight (5:05pm) : 2015 Loam & Stone Handicap (70) 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Going with Karakuchi (Best Odds: $4.80) This Matty Dale mare hasn’t had a great deal of luck in two runs back from a break, though that luck has been through her own doing given she has missed the start at both runs. In her lone run at this track last year, she bolted in, and there really does seem to be a bit of timing about her. Worked home well last start and a fast run 1200m looks ideal here.
Big Danger: Hello Schumann (Best Odds: $6.00) was well backed to win on Albury Cup Day and thanks to a gun steer from Avdulla the son of Oratorio sprinted hard late to get the bikkies. Draws wide for this, but Shinn rides and the horse does run well when kept on the fresh side.
Roughie: Ainzali (Best Odds: $7.50) was safe in betting when resuming on her home track at Canberra and she duly saluted, sitting off speed and finishing best to score. She won second up last time in, and it’s interesting to note Avdulla rides this filly and not the horse he won on last start, Hello Schumann. That could well be a good lead.
