A bumper nine race card has been assembled for Randwick on Saturday where it is Up And Coming Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is out eleven metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Up And Coming Stakes 🏆: View the Field for the Up And Coming Stakes
Race 1. (11:55) Everest Carnival On Sale (78) 1400m
3 All Saint’s Eve(Bet Now: $1.90 TOP ODDS) is a huge watch here. Talented mare for All Saint’s Eve that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the Kembla Grange Classic during the Autumn and she was excellent from the back when a close up third to Asiago, with the runner up going on to win a Group l. Two trials have been good and she has a touch of class/quality.
6 Vitesse (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) is the one with the recent Randwick heavy track experience, so if the fav is off her game, this girl looks the one. Bumped into a smart one in Emeralds last time out at Canterbury but was 1400m back to 1250m. Now back up to 1400m, hard fit, a soft lead, she does look the only serious threat to the fav.
4 High Low Bet (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is worth another chance. Thought she was good in defeat behind Vitesse at the Randwick 1400m two back before going to the Kenso track where the pattern was against her, so forget she went around behind impressive winner Madam Legend. Probably not going as well as last prep, but finds a winnable race at her best.
Race 2. (12:30) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1200m
Going to speck one at a price here in the shape of 10 The Pharoah (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS). On the quick back up after racing last Friday at Tamworth when leading and giving a really good kick under Weir, but was pipped near the peg by Arleta, who has solid form around it. Tumbles down to 52kg (Should be 51kg, but Weir can only get down to 52kg), and off the speed map, he leads comfortably.
3 Niccirose (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is a son of Nicconi for Scott Singleton that was knocking on the door to win one and it came in a Highway two weeks ago at this track/distance when given an aggressive ride by Billy Cray and the five year old loved it, spanking them to win well. Think there’s more depth here, but he’s got the winning form.
8 Northern Wilderose (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a Paul Smith trained mare who is knocking on the door to win a Highway and I think she gets a great chance here. Comes through the Niccirose Highway from two weeks ago here where she had the suck run in behind and tried hard, but was no match for the Scott Singleton gelding. Going well and is deserving of a win.
Race 3. (13:05) Schweppes (bm88) 1100m
7 Masked Crusader (Bet Now: $1.60 TOP ODDS) is the biggest watch on the program. He’s got the hype around him after a couple of explosive wins in the early part of the Winter. Visually very good and also on the clock, but have to pour some cold water because he has done nothing yet and yet is high up in markets for the Everest and Golden Eagle. I can’t tip against him because the ceiling isn’t known with him. He could well reach those levels. Think he wins. Can I back him? Not at the odds he is.
5 Varda (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) can continue the picket fence for the prep. Gee it was a lovely ride from Collett aboard this mare when winning over 1100m at Rosehill three weeks ago. Was in a tricky spot but got cover before peeling into clear air and she went through her gears like a good horse to win. Harder here, but she’s hard fit, in form…she’s the threat.
1 Single Bullet (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have returned in good order for Gary Portelli. Resumed over this track/distance a fortnight back when somewhat ridden a bit upside down near the speed but he kicked strongly, only going down late to the hands of a very much in form Inanup. Doubt he beats the first two, but should run third or fourth.
Race 4. (13:40) Ranvet (bm72) 1100m
I think you have to believe what you saw when it came to the debut win of 9 Torun (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) at Hawkesbury. Did he beat much? Probably not, but gee the manner in which he put them away and spanked them in good time was impressive and Joe Pride was glowing in his praise of this guy. Comes straight to Saturday grade and I’m confident he can measure up.
5 Quatum (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) is a handy looking animal for Matty Dunn. Trialled up like a nice horse and produced that on debut at the midweeks at Warwick Farm, leading throughout and showing good sustained speed to get the job done. Clearly harder here, but like that the stable bring him straight to Saturday grade and he’s got the right racing pattern.
6 Destination (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) has always been a horse held in high regard by James Cummings and at one stage was talked up as a Slipper candidate but he didn’t measure up in weaker races during the Autumn. Spelled, resumed at Kembla and produced sizzling late splits to win impressively, albeit the form out of the race is suspect. Proven city performer, so a knockout chance.
Race 5. (14:20) Premier's Cup Prelude 1800m
Class came to the fore in the Winter Challenge and I think it comes to the fore again, this time with 1 Raheen House (Bet Now: $5.00), who resumes for Kris Lees. Raced just the four times during the Autumn, headlined by a win in the Chairmans before a luckless effort in the Sydney Cup. No public trials, but he has these on toast re class.
2 Taikomochi (Bet Now: $2.60) is getting had fit now for the WaterBott team. The two runs back from a spell have been really good. Narrow second to Noble Boy first up in the Winter Stakes before going to the Winter Challenge when leading and fighting on strongly when third to Mugatoo. Suited up in trip, should find the front and prove hard to get past.
3 Grey Lion (Bet Now: $8.00) hasn’t set the world on fire in two runs back from a spell, but a couple of things for that. One, the two races haven’t been races he’s been a winning chance in, and last start, he should have finished a bit closer. Tick over trial was solid enough and big tick for him is Kathy O’Hara jumping back on.
Race 6. (15:00) Sky Racing Active (bm78) 1000m
4 Fanciful Dream (Bet Now: $3.40) is bursting to win a Saturday race for Paul Perry. Looked all over a winner here a fortnight back and I’m sure got past De Grawin, but that horse had a 6.5kg weight pull and the last 50-75m, that told late with that horse kicking back to win. She’s going super this girl and is deserving of a Saturday win.
She’s sucked me in again. 3 Athiri (Bet Now: $2.35) is included. Pretty much been on her every start of her career and for the most part, she has let me down. But I do hope James Cummings has trained her like a 1000m/1100m horse because that is when she is most effective. Loved her Hawkesbury trial and think she’s ready to go.
2 Another Sin (Bet Now: $16.00) is a huge watch here. Another one for Cav that could be a candidate for the Kosciuszko with a forward showing here. Hasn’t raced since the Wagga Town Plate on a bottomless track when far from disgraced in defeat, finishing fifth to Irish Songs. Resumes without a trial but first up in a Saturday race tells me there’s a bit of intent.
Race 7. (15:40) Up & Coming Stakes 1300m
Very keen to see how 2 North Pacific (Bet Now: $1.95) goes here. Team Hawkes trained colt that made a mess of them when resuming at Rosehill and yes, it was the first race so he had first look at the track, but he did clock some of the best late splits of the meeting. Tick over trial was strong and he does have that Farnan form from the Silver Slipper.
3 Smart Image (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Team Snowden trained colt that has his share of talent and is still very raw/new to the caper. Really surged hard late to win on debut at Warwick Farm before going to Rosehill three weeks back. Yes, could speak all day about the Bowman ride, but the horse got the job done. He’s got plenty of improvement mentally and is in the right stable.
Big fan of 8 Bravado (Bet Now: $12.00) and I think he can measure up to these successfully. Impressive debut winner at Kembla and ran sharp time relative to the meeting. Then raced at Rosehill three weeks ago and loved the way he found the line from the back in a messy race won by Smart Image. Eats up 1300m and has plenty of upside to come.
Race 8. (16:20) Spring Preview Hcp 1400m
Gee 8 Man Of Peace (Bet Now: $3.30) is going well for Matty Dale. He’s just that level below proper Stakes company I think but with the right placement, could easily snare blacktype. He’s a beauty. Puts himself on speed and busts his gut every time he steps out, which was the case when winning here two weeks ago, leading throughout and proving too good. He’ll look the winner for a long way.
2 Danzdanzdance (Bet Now: $7.00) is an absolute swimmer so she’ll love these conditions albeit she’s first up with better races in mind down the track. Quality mare for Chris Waller who was far from disgraced in some good races during the Autumn Carnival, including a third in the Coolmore Legacy. Recent trial was good, she loves a heavy track and J Mac steers.
7 Angel Of Truth (Bet Now: $11.00) is a fascinating runner here. Quality stayer that was formerly with Gwenda Markwell but now finds himself with Team Hawkes. Teased somewhat during the Autumn but didn’t deliver, and really hasn’t delivered since his Derby win last year, so I like the switch of camps to a proven staying camp that can get them right, and thought his recent trial was solid enough.
Race 9. (17:00) Heineken (bm78) 1400m
5 Off Shaw (Bet Now: $4.80) has done little wrong in two career outings in Australia for Bjorn Baker. Toughed it out to win first up at Kembla on a bottomless track before backing it up with a strong win near the speed at this track/distance two weeks ago. Was there to be run down, but kicked hard and was too good. Third up, should be at peak fitness and is hard to beat.
9 Charretera (Bet Now: $7.00) is an honest horse that more often than not is around the mark…problem is he doesn’t win often enough. I was keen on him here a fortnight back and I thought 150m out he was going to win, but just found Off Shaw too good, just. He’s going well and a win wouldn’t shock at all…just need deep pockets to keep buttering up.
4 Got Unders (Bet Now: $14.00) is a beauty for Jay Hopkins. Puts in every time he steps out, and the old boy is going well. Think he should have won the Daniel Baker Sprint last time out at Coffs Harbour. Just got badly held up when wanting to build the revs. Got clear late and surged hard to just miss. Randwick wet record isn’t too bad and is a must for multiples.
