Sandown Lakeside is where Melbourne racing takes place this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:45) Ladbrokes Park Handicap 1200m
Big fan of the Anthony Freedman trained 3 King Of Hastings (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS). Was a surprising drifter in betting when debuting over 1000m at Cranbourne but after getting the box seat run, he always looked in control and when Dee got out, the horse lengthened like an above average one. Has since had a jumpout at Flemington last Friday and went outstanding. Keen on him.
2 Evening Glory (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Smart Missile for the Anthony Freedman stable that debuted on a bog track at Hamilton and for a little while, he looked to be struggling, but he picked up around 300m out and let down strongly to score a sharp debut win, with the time stacking up well relative to the day. Has the hard 1200m run under the belt, which should hold him in good stead.
7 Hi Stranger (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) is a Shane Fliedner trained juvenile who was totally unwanted in betting when debuting down the Flemington straight three weeks back where he was well off the speed and considering the way the race was run, he had no hope, but was good late when fourth, and that form was franked last Saturday. On a bending track with the run under the belt, he appeals.
Race 2. (12:20) Ladbrokes Cash In Handicap (84) 1600m
Really like 7 Global Sanction (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) as a horse and up in trip, happy to be in her corner. Hasn’t raced in over a month since scoring an impressive win from the back over 1500m at Sandown, charging home and winning with purpose. Form has been good since with a couple of subsequent winners, including the runner up Sonaree. Hard to beat here I feel against this lot.
2 Silent Roar (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) looks one of the key chances. Team Hawkes trains this mare, who bolted up over the mile at Caulfield two weeks ago, leading all the way under a brilliant front running steer from Dunn. The worry there is that she walked them up in front and didn’t exactly dash home, so I reckon in order to win, she’ll want to be rolling on speed because I think there are a few here with a better turn of foot.
Back to the mile and back to mares grade should suit the Chris Waller trained 1 Araaja (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS). This mare ran over 1800m at Flemington three weeks ago where she was back in the run and was never really in the hunt behind Admiral’s Joker, with that form being franked last Saturday via Dr Drill. She’s teased to do something positive for a while. Think she gets a great chance.
Race 3. (12:55) Ladbrokes Handicap 1200m
5 William Thomas (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) looks a great bet here. Total forgive his last run at Caulfield two weeks ago given he was back near last in the run and they crawled in front, meaning he had no chance, but loved the way he found the line and did produce the best late splits of the day. Bigger track, up to 1200m, hard fit now…just doesn’t want the track too wet. Looks hard to beat.
Michael Poy is a very good rider of front runners so with that in mind, 1 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) has to be a leading chance. IMO, Chelsea Hall rode the horse too cute last start in the race mentioned above. Went too slow in front, which advantaged those near him. He’s at his best when rolling in front and getting horses out of their comfort zone. If that happens, hard to beat.
9 Peko (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for the Colin Little stable that resumes. This mare had a fab Summer prep, winning a couple of races and racing very consistently right throughout the campaign. Been spelled and trialled well enough at Pakenham. I think she’ll get over from the wide gate via Jungle Edge and on the minimum, fresh, she could take some holding out.
Race 4. (13:30) Ladbrokes Cash Out Handicap 1200m
7 Voila (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) isn’t far off a win for Chris Waller. She comes through the Bam’s On Fire race from two weeks ago where she had no luck in the straight when full of running and I think she clearly runs second if she got a chance to let down, instead having to settle for fourth, but her late splits were very good despite being in restricted room. Definite contender.
I reckon back in trip, 2 Akkadian (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) appeals for Matt Cumani. This bloke has produced some pretty good efforts this time in, but have to forgive the last run over 1400m because for mine, he just didn’t see it out. He was there to be a winning threat 200m out but couldn’t quite finish it off. Like him back in trip from the inside gate, he’s a great winning chance.
The double figures on offer looks more than acceptable for the Cindy Alderson trained 12 Turn The Tide (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS). This gelding is a few weeks between runs since being badly held up at Ballarat before Dwayne Dunn got the split and the gelding dashed hard to nail Trilli on the line. Form around him from the Spring ie Petrelle and Beauty does read very well for this.
Race 5. (14:05) Ladbrokes Info Hub Handicap 2100m
There is the query of potential second up syndrome, but it was hard not to be impressed by the Australian debut of 5 Beau Balmain (Bet Now: $4.60). This former German galloper had start one down under in the Pacodali race from two weeks ago where he got well back off the speed and was never really likely, but loved the way he found the line to run third. Got a stack of upside left and if he does improve off that, he’ll be terribly hard to beat.
1 Pacodali (Bet Now: $2.10) has found some form now and hopefully he can go on with it. Was disappointed with his finale two back at Flemington before racing at Caulfield a fortnight ago where he was given a beaut steer from Teo Nugent and despite being strongly challenged by Live And Free, he held that horse safely late and the last few strides, he was getting away. If he improves off that, clearly hard to beat.
Up to 2100m will suit the Patrick Payne trained 2 Lamborghini (Bet Now: $10.00). He was having his first run since the Adelaide Cup when racing over the mile at Flemington three weeks ago and though short of his ideal trip, his last few strides was very encouraging behind Spunlago. He’ll eat up the 2100m here and does have a bit of class on his side. Has to be respected.
Race 6. (14:45) Ladbrokes $101 Odds Handicap 2100m
1 Dogmatic (Bet Now: $2.70) looks to be heading in the right direction for Richard Laming. Loved the way he attacked the line to win two back over the mile at Ballarat before stepping up to 2000m at Caulfield when given a peach of a steer from Dwayne Dunn and the son of Domesday repaid the steer with a strong finale to put them away impressively. Can see him only improving off that and he’ll take some beating once again.
12 Dark Confidant (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained filly who is four weeks between runs since contesting the SA Fillies Classic at Morphettville where you could easily make a case that she should have won, but just had no luck when she needed it, having to settle for fourth. Has residual fitness on her side, 2100m will be fine and won’t mind some give in the track.
6 American In Paris (Bet Now: $16.00) has been up a while for Symon Wilde but is racing well and I think the stable might have had a blessing in disguise last time at Caulfield behind Dogmatic. He got back to near last in the run, ridden cold, and was very good late when fourth to the Richard Laming three year old. I think that’s the way to ride him and back up in trip, he’ll be hard to beat with a repeat effort.
Race 7. (15:25) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (78) 1600m
He’s a bludger is 12 Street Sheik (Bet Now: $4.20) but his run of outs finally came to an end last time out on the Parks track at Morphettville, aided by a 12/10 steer from Billy Egan, who got the breaks by saving ground and the horse dashed through to win impressively. Is he a case of a horse that will now go on with it now he’s got a win on the board? Time will tell. But I’ll be with him.
6 Mr Reckless (Bet Now: $9.50) can definitely improve. Chris Waller trains this import, who was having his second start in Australia when sitting worse than midfield in the run off a very slow tempo, which was against him given he is a stayer, and just had no turn of foot to make up any significant ground behind all the way winner Silent Roar. Better set up here, he can definitely improve.
1 Hypnos (Bet Now: $8.00) is a definite threat for me. The Roger James/Robert Wellwood stable doesn’t bring them to Australia for nothing and this bloke does have talent. He ran behind AQsgard Masif at Caulfield two weeks ago and I want to be very forgiving. Mick Dee had the horse in the 1/1 and played the percentages, getting into the three wide line on the back of Mr Genoa, but unfortunately as soon as he did that, the horse went backwards and he had to go four wide, and that’s when Nugent on the leader/winner put the foot down. Bigger track, fitter, he can run well for sure.
Race 8. (16:05) Ladbrokes Back Yourself 1600m
Bit of a guess here but with only 51kg on his back, I’ll side the way of 14 The Statesman (Bet Now: $17.00), who is resuming here. Best form is over further and can’t find a jumpout for him but first up last prep was over 1400m and he produced some of the better late splits of the race behind Barthelona. Best form will be at 2000m+, but just hoping the light weight and first up at 1600m is enough for him to run a positive race fresh.
2 Odeon (Bet Now: $6.00) is three weeks between runs for the Ellerton/Zahra stable since racing over the mile at Flemington where I thought Willow gave him every chance in front, controlling things beautifully on speed and gave a good kick, but just found Spunlago too good on the day. Would like to think there is a bit of improvement left and certainly has the class/quality.
If we remain to have a track with genuine give, I think 1×3, 6 Liapari (Bet Now: $19.00) is a bet. Been hot on him winning a race this time in for Lisa Enright but has been plagued by bad luck whether it be dry tracks, lack of tempo or just finding one better. His effort at Spunlago was much better than what the form guide says given how slow they went early. Just hope the track remains rain affected.
Race 9. (16:36) Ladbrokes Multiverse Handicap 1400m
3 Buffalo River (Bet Now: $2.40) is a Michael Moroney trained three year old who made his Australian debut against the older horses at Ballarat and he produced one of the wins of the day. He led at a good tempo against the seasoned campaigners and was there to be beaten, but found plenty late and was much too good. Back to his own age, hoping Olly can take a sit off a likely good speed.
1 Asgard Massif (Bet Now: $4.00) has come back in super order for John Sadler, winning 2/2 this time in. Led all the way to win first up here before going to Caulfield where I thought Teo Nugent gave it a peach steer in front, getting a couple of cheap sectionals mid race and with only 51kg on his back, he was always going to take some beating after that and did win impressively. Harder here, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
6 Sizzleme (Bet Now: $7.00) has been kept on ice for Cindy Alderson since contesting the SA Oaks where she was outclassed behind Princess Jenni after sitting on speed in the run. Think this level and this kind of distance range will be to her liking and she’ll do no from the inside gate. Just all depends if she’s still got any zip in the legs to go with a few handy types here.
