Racing in Adelaide this Saturday returns to the course proper at Morphettville for an eight race card. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out nine metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:31) Aceit Couriers Handicap 1100m
3 Kayseri (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. The Jolly camp trains this son of Showcasing, who is on debut after trialling a tick over two weeks back when running a narrow second to La Richesse, but went about his business nicely. That horse didn’t do much last week, but in isolation, Kayseri looked decent enough and stable should always be respected when debuting a younger galloper.
1 God’s Penny (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Phillip Stokes trained juvenile and isn’t the stable just flying at the moment. Debuted over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight ago off the back of a sharp jumpout win and despite being challenged strongly in the straight, he found plenty under Gary Lo and got the win. Harder here, but he’s got the race fitness and win under the belt.
7 Magic Phantom (Bet Now: $9.00) was a drifter in betting when resuming in the God’s Penny race from two weeks ago but unfortunately for those that were on, he was caught wide no cover for the trip and that early work just told on him late when a tiring fourth. If he can get a more economical run this time around, he’ll be dangerous and stable is in good form at the moment.
Race 2. (13:06) Heineken 3 Handicap (82) 2500m
6 Zabalan (Bet Now: $3.50) is an import for the Maher/Eustace stable that’s working up to a win. Ran on the Ballarat Synthetic last time out over 2100m when off the speed and trying hard to reel in Greycliffe, but that horse just edged him out in a tight finish. Did fail in his lone run at 2400m but was wide throughout, so no real guide there, but last start suggested it would be ideal, and this is a winnable race.
3 Meli Melo (Bet Now: $4.80) has had a career best prep for Barry Brook and she can continue that here. Contested the Queens Cup a few weeks ago on the course proper here where she had the suck run nearer the inside and chased hard all the way to run third to Valac. This is a massive drop in depth for the mare and she does appear quite hard to beat against this lot.
Bit of a tail to the race but 2 Royal Rumble (Bet Now: $9.00) could be a sneaky chance at odds. Comes through the Lostarc race from two weeks ago when back in the run and trying hard but was no match for the hard fit Ryan Balfour iron horse. Does have a really good record on the course proper and his last couple of runs have been encouraging, suggesting a win isn’t far away.
Race 3. (13:41) Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 2035m
5 La La Luchie (Bet Now: $8.00) on top in a very tricky race. The Macdonald/Gluyas trained mare produced one of the wins of the day at Balaklava a couple of Wednesdays back, sitting back in the run before coming very wide, making a long sustained run and still finished best to get up on the peg. Back in trip no issue and has showed city class ability in the past. Tricky race, but each way, if the price is right, is the bet.
2 Super Swoop (Bet Now: $4.00) is in a real purple patch at the moment for the Macdonald/Gluyas stable. Got a much needed confidence boosting win two back at Murray Bridge before slightly coming back in trip at Gawler and really lifted late under Jerry Chau to get the win. Good record on the track and now he’s in form, he deserves another crack at Saturday grade.
4 Karaoke Express (Bet Now: $13.00) has only won the one race from 16 starts but is usually thereabouts. Comes through the Super Swoop race at Gawler and for mine, he just got a mile out of his ground and was never really likely, but he did pick up late and was quite good behind the Macdonald/Gluyas stayer. Bigger track and ridden more positively, he can run an improved race.
Race 4. (14:16) Commercial Finance Australia Handicap (70) 1050m
1 Bold Star (Bet Now: $4.00) for me. Gordon Richards trains this gelding, who was solid enough two back over 1300m before backing up a week later over 1000m when sitting off a slow speed before presenting wider and finishing off strongly to nail his rivals on the line. Think he’ll be even better suited on the bigger track and slightly up in trip, and he’ll be more suited also if the speed is more genuine.
3 Burning The Clock (Bet Now: $3.50) is a very consistent three year old for Will Clarken who is generally around the mark. Paul Gatt gave the gelding a sweet run just off the speed and loomed large to win, but he couldn’t quite dash quick enough and Bold Star was able to nab him on the line. Has only won the one race, by a lip, but his ability is better than what it reads and is a definite chance.
8 Jaamint (Bet Now: $23.00) is a daughter of Mint Lane resuming for the Gordon Richards stable. This girl hasn’t raced since March 1 at Port Lincoln when back and making ground late behind What A Shock. Been given a good spell and has trialled up well a couple of times in readiness for her return. Market will be the guide, but wouldn’t be shocked if she ran a beauty fresh.
Race 5. (14:56) Table & Chair Co Handicap (70) 1600m
Want to give 5 Rapid Bay (Bet Now: $4.40) another chance. Was really keen on this Jake Stephens trained three year old when racing on the Parks track two weeks ago but just not sure he was 100% happy on the tighter track, but was good late when fourth to Yulong Patrol. I think 1600m on the bigger track will be to his liking and the efforts prior were that of a decent horse.
1 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $4.00) has been in work a fair while for the Gordon Richards stable but he’s racing well enough to be very competitive here. He was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight back when closing off hard late to run a close up second to Yulong Patrol. Up to the mile on the bigger track, he’ll take some beating.
What to make of the win of 6 Serious Spender (Bet Now: $8.00) last time out at Gawler. Was wide no cover over 1500m before Jerry Chau pushed the button on the turn, put them away and the filly dashed clear late for an outstanding win. If she runs up to anything like that, she’ll go very close here. Just all depends if she can repeat the dose because that came out of nowhere.
Race 6. (15:36) Red Rock Ribs Book Now Handicap (70) 1600m
Have always had a bit of time for 8 Bronski (Bet Now: $9.00) and he finds a winnable metro race for the Sue Jaensch stable. He was really well backed when racing over the mile at Ballarat last time where I thought Jamie Kah gave the gelding a 12/10 steer and he looked home, only to be nabbed late by Dogmatic, who franked that form by bolting up at Caulfield. Hard to beat with a repeat effort.
You don’t know how good a horse is until they are beaten so with that in mind, have to respect 11 Rainmoth (Bet Now: $8.50) for the Jolly camp. She’s won her first three career outings, the latest coming over 1400m at Balaklava where she was there to be beaten but under Kenny Lau, she found plenty late and was impressive once again. Mile looks no issue and hard to knock a winner.
15 Diamond Tycoon (Bet Now: $13.00) was a bludger when racing with Tony McEvoy and she’s heading down that path again with the Macdonald/Gluyas stable, but just want to give her one more look. Ran over 1400m on the Parks track two weeks ago and had no luck at all when seemingly full of running and clearly should have finished much closer behind Going Gaga. Have to give her another chance.
Race 7. (16:16) TAB Handicap (64) 1050m
I think he’s a good bet here 4 Thompson’s Reward (Bet Now: $4.50). Handy sprinter for David Jolly that resumes after a two run Spring prep on the Parks track where he was pretty disappointing, being hard in the market each run. Been given a good break and though he finished last in the trial, he could have finished much closer if Cowan had sneezed on him. Hope he’s ridden cold and launches at them late.
12 Suplex City (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of Sebring for Will Clarken that resumes. This bloke has had a few homes during his career but is now with Clarken and we know how good he is at improving a tried horse. The two trials leading in have been quiet but he’s looked pretty good and stable did produce an impressive first up winner at Balaklava on Monday via Mr Hamilton, owned in the same interests.
Great to see 2 He Is Golden (Bet Now: $10.00) back at the races for the Georgie Henderson stable. This son of Golden Lake hasn’t raced since November 10 on the Parks track when looking disinterested for the most part but he got going late and charged home behind Golden Lustre. Solid enough trial behind Captain Duffy a couple of weeks ago and normally does sprint well fresh.
Race 8. (16:55) AAMI Handicap (70) 1200m
He has a few convictions, but gee the double figures for 9 Master Chum (Bet Now: $11.00) does look enticing. He ran in an 82 race on the Parks track two weeks ago and closed off well behind Bel Sonic, beaten a couple of lengths into fourth. Bel Sonic would be $1.50 against this lot. Good speed engaged, hoping Stubby can get three wide cover, perhaps four wide, and launch at them late.
3 Charossa (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Gordon Richards trained gelding who was well supported when resuming over 1250m on the Parks track three weeks ago and it was a horrendous watch if you were on. Just had no luck in the straight when seemingly having plenty to offer and should have finished much closer behind surprise winner Rothmoore. Trialled up brilliantly prior to that, so have to give him another chance.
The best version of 8 Masipag (Bet Now: $16.00) is certainly good enough to figure in the finish. This Ryan Balfour trained mare did win well three back at Gawler before being good on the course proper behind Extreme Thrill. Then raced on the Parks track a couple of weeks ago when wide no cover and feeling the pinch later behind Going Gaga. Have to give her another chance here.
