South Australian metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler for an eight race meeting. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:06) Akeed Mofeed @ Goldin Farms Handicap (82) 2100m
It’s a bludger of a race with little to no depth so I’m going for a bit of value in the Port Lincoln visitor 7 Neva Doubt Us (Bet Now: $17.00), who has been racing really well on his home track recently, the latest run seeing him finish fourth after being ridden a touch too close to the speed for mine. Yet to place in five runs on soft ground, but being by Not A Single Doubt, he should be okay on it.
8 Aagas (Bet Now: $2.80) has been up forever it seems for Ryan Balfour but gee he’s racing well. Had the 1/1 sit over 2250m on the Parks track last time and usually that would be the ideal spot but Crafty Devil took off down the side and made it a staying contest for the last 600m, something Aagas probably didn’t like. Likes racing at Gawler and could bounce back if he gets things to suit.
5 Perfect Rhyme (Bet Now: $3.70) looks to be a working progress for Darren Weir and I think maybe he’s figured the mare out. First three runs for the stable were dreadful so he gave her a freshen up and she ran over 1800m at Sandown where she attempted to lead all the way and gave a kick but just tired late when fourth to Mr Monaco. Better with a sit I think, fitter and up to 2100m is ideal.
Race 2. (13:41) Coopers Dry Handicap (70) 1200m
2 Chucky (Bet Now: $2.80) for me. Will Clarken trains this progressive three year old, who just missed on debut on the Parks track before racing over 1100m here where he was afforded a lovely ride from Todd Pannell and he proved far too good for a maiden which had depth to it. Race here isn’t strong after scratchings and he does seem to be a horse on the up.
4 First Diamond (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Diamond Deluxe filly resuming for the Tony McEvoy stable. She ran well during the Winter, including a couple of wins on the bounce before being outclassed at blacktype level. Finds a very winnable race for her resumption and I thought her trial a couple of weeks back looked very encouraging to the eye. One to beat.
9 City Beats (Bet Now: $23.00) is still a maiden for Gordon Richards but looks handy. He ran in a 1250m maiden on the Parks track a fortnight ago and though well beaten, the winner was Kenyan Wonder, who looks well above average. Not sure he can beat these, but he’s getting better with each run under the belt and could fill a minor spot.
Race 3. (14:16) Terrace Function Centre Handicap (64) 1200m
1 Pretty Glass (Bet Now: $3.00) looks one of a few horses I’m quite keen on at Gawler. Was really keen on her when she resumed at Warrnambool on Jericho Day but she just hit a flat spot in the run and that cost her. Warmed to the task late and would have won in another couple of strides. Stable has a great record at these Provincial SA tracks, she’s got upside and the right form.
Very interested to see 3 Ruby Sea, (Bet Now: $4.00), formerly with the Maher/Eustace team but is now with Will Clarken and as I keep saying, he’s one of the best in Australia at improving a tried horse. Ordinary resumption at Terang but the race has produced a couple of winners and she looked sharp in a recent Morphettville Parks track. Huge watch.
4 Sand Cat (Bet Now: $11.00) is an Emma Hubbard trained mare who has been racing in good form recently and was rewarded for her consistency with a narrow but strong on speed win last time out at Strathalbyn. Should do little to no work from gate one and the ‘Fawke Lift’ has been riding in super form at the moment. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 4. (14:51) Trimboli Services Handicap (75) 1200m
Looks just the right race for the Will Clarken trained 3 Columbia (Bet Now: $2.20). Strung together a couple of sharp wins at Morphettville prior to going to the Magic Millions at Ballarat and if you were on that afternoon, it was grim viewing. Should have finished much closer but just had no luck when trying to get through. Back to this level, he looks extremely hard to beat.
5 Just A Bigger Dash (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Chris Bieg trained mare who loves racing at Gawler and if she gets on speed without doing too much work, she’ll take beating. Attempted to lead all the way on the Parks track last time but the market said she was no good, out to $7 from $4, and ran accordingly when well beaten behind Mr Gustavo. She can win this if she brought her best.
8 Marina (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to be flying for John Hickmott. Liked his resumption behind Flying Krupt before bumping into that horse again last time where he was wide no cover throughout yet still stuck on to run third. I reckon he wants 1400m+ so back to 1200m the little concern with him but no doubt he’s come back from Darwin in super order.
Race 5. (15:31) Festival Hire Handicap (64) 1200m
11 Two Odd Sox (Bet Now: $4.80) gets the nod for me. Shayne Cahill trains this gelding, who ran over 1300m on the Parks track a fortnight ago where he got well off the pace and was never really in the hunt but worked home well late to run second to dominant winner Flying Krupt. Back to 1200m is the niggle with him but if they overdo it in front, he’ll be one of the strongest late.
I think this is D-Day for 3 Over And Above (Bet Now: $1.75). He’s been a beaten favourite in both runs back for the new stable and you’d have to mark him overall as disappointing, especially last start. He was given every chance in front to get the win but he didn’t finish it off good enough to run a narrow third to Musical Query. That leaves me with doubts at 1200m but he did win at the trip when Team Hawkes had him.
8 Outinthestreet (Bet Now: $5.50) isn’t the most reliable galloper going around for David Jolly but on his day he can produce a decent finale. Resumed at the Strathalbyn midweeks last time and for mine just looked in need of the run when fourth to Sand Cat. He is a second up winner, two time winner at Gawler and Jamie Kah is in good form. Think he has to be respected.
Race 6. (16:11) Barossa Wines At The Races Handicap (64) 1700m
4 Handsome Return (Bet Now: $2.50) looks the one to beat. Will Clarken trains this former kiwi, who made his Australian debut over 1200m here at the midweeks where he was hard in the market and despite being challenged halfway down the straight, Jamie Kah kept her cool and the class of this horse kicked in. Quickly up to 1700m a little query, but has a stack of upside.
10 Set To Cruise (Bet Now: $4.80) does look the key threat. Mick Huxtable has this daughter of Al Maher going really well at the moment and she comes to metro level in winning form after winning really impressively at this track/distance last Wednesday, sitting on speed before being clicked up and drawing clear. Wet track no issue for her and she seems to be in a really good frame of mind.
12 Unscopeable (Bet Now: $12.00) is a daughter of Duporth for Chris Bieg who ran over this track/distance last start where Toeroek had her up on speed and she seemed to travel well in the run but couldn’t quite get the job done when second to Set To Cruise. Tends to save her best for Gawler and I think with an economical sit, she can be dangerous.
Race 7. (16:51) Prince Albert Hotel Gawler Handicap (70) 1100m
5 Street Life (Bet Now: $12.00) has been excellent in two runs back from a break for the Karen Byrnes stable. Closed off strongly first up over 900m at Murray Bridge before racing over 1100m at Morphettville six weeks ago and finishing off his race with purpose behind Columbia. He’s got an awful racing pattern, but if they overdo it in front, he’s certainly the one to beat.
6 Kabini (Bet Now: $3.10) is four weeks between runs since racing over the 1100m on the course proper at Morphettville where she was heavily supported and after receiving the perfect three wide with cover trip, she was always in control and put them away rather comfortably for a dominant win. Seems to be a mare who performs better on the fresh side.
4 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $6.50) is on the seven day back up after winning impressively last Saturday over 1200m at Morphettville, finishing off strongly from off the pace to score. The tempo was strong there which really suited him and I think once again he’ll get his chance to run on, plus is only fourth up so you’d like to think he has a bit more left in the tank.
Race 8. (17:31) Ausbia Electrical Handicap (75) 1500m
She’s getting to last chance territory but I’m really keen on 11 Diamond Tycoon (Bet Now: $12.00). Was all over her last start over 1400m where she was a surprising drifter in betting. The market was right though. She got back to near last, was disinterested for the most part but really warmed to the task in a clear eye catching effort. If she can sit closer in the run, I think she’s the one to beat.
I think back to 1500m will suit the Will Clarken trained 1 Savatag (Bet Now: $4.40), who was a month between runs when racing over the 1950m on the Parks track and he seemed to get a good run near the speed but once Raquel Clark poured the pressure with Von Costa Glass, Savatag didn’t respond well and faded to beat one home in the five horse field. Better than that, so give him another chance.
7 Enki (Bet Now: $7.50) might be a bit of value here for Gordon Richards. He looked home when racing on the Parks track last time but couldn’t quite finish it off and was nutted near the peg by Mr Gustavo. I think Diamond Tycoon will turn the tables given she’s down in the weights with more upside, but this bloke is a hard fit galloper who will be on speed.
