A bumper program has been assembled for Morphettville this Monday, where it is Adelaide Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres from the 1200m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race One (13:03) : Seven News Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Pomp (Best Odds: $3.80) looks the way to go in the opener. He ran over 1050m here last Saturday and was enormous behind Counter Pulse, just giving away too much start. Gate one, Neilson aboard, cherry ripe fitness and experience wise…looks the one to beat.
Big Danger: 11 Chosen Angel (Best Odds: $13.00) resumes here for Marilyn Smith. This filly had two runs in the Spring, starting off with a debut win at Gawler before running over this trip on the Parks track and running second to Kallara Village. No trials, but has quality and Holder does stick.
Roughie: 5 Space Time (Best Odds: $16.00) is a nippy customer for the Kennewell yard who was on speed last time out over this trip on the Parks track and just couldn’t quite peg back Colonel Custer. Gets in well after the claim and this is a winnable race if he can overcome the tricky draw.
Race Two (13:38) : Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic 1200m:
Back Me: 2 Dam Ready (Best Odds: $2.00) hasn’t raced for over three weeks since bolting up at Moonee Valley, beating home Moshki, who went on to win a Stakes race here last Saturday so the form reads very well and the stable rarely leaves Adelaide Cup Day empty handed.
Big Danger: 1 Bullion Wolf (Best Odds: $6.50) ran in the Blue Diamond Preview and Prelude before coming back home on the Parks track a couple of weeks ago and ran a game second to Benz. Up to 1200m is a query, but senior rider on now, draws well and is hard fit.
Roughie: 8 Northern Lass (Best Odds: $12.00) resumed over 1100m at Bendigo and worked home strongly without looking likely when second to Lycurgus. Fitter and up in trip are big ticks and gets the services of gun Sydney rider Sam Clipperton.
Race Three (14:13) : The Myer Fashion Trophy (80) 1200m:
Back Me: 7 Coachella (Best Odds: $12.00) is a talented mare that resumes for Phillip Stokes. She hasn’t raced for 100 days since winning over 1500m here, aided by a lovely ride from Matty Neilson. No trials, but she can sprint well fresh and is well weighted I feel given her record.
Big Danger: 1 Scratchy Lass (Best Odds: $2.70) comes back home after a two run stint at Flemington, which yielded a second and fourth in a couple of quality races for the mares. This looks her level and most importantly, Jason Holder is back aboard now.
Roughie: 6 Sheez On Top (Best Odds: $13.00) resumed over 1000m on the Parks track a couple of weeks back and worked home alright late in the piece when running fifth to Hidden Value. Draws much better now and Jamie Kah jumps aboard.
Race Four (14:48) : Qatar Airways Handicap (75) 1600m:
Back Me: Very keen on 5 General Custer (Best Odds: $9.00). His run last time out at Pakenham was very good given he was wide most of the way and it was a race with little tempo so for him to only get beat by a potential Group class horse in Monteux was a good effort. If he overcome the wide gate here, he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 4 Grande Rosso (Best Odds: $2.60) won over this trip at Caulfield two back before stepping up to 1800m at Ladbrokes Park and running a solid race when fifth to Assign, who went on to win at Caulfield, so the form reads well and back to the mile should appeal.
Roughie: 6 Zayak (Best Odds: $26.00) was given a let up before running over 1400m on the Parks track and worked home alright late in the piece behind in form type Tycoon Queen, who was well backed in that race. Up in trip and fitter, draws well and gets the claim for the leading apprentice.
Race Five (15:22) : Schweppes CS Hayes Memorial Cup 1600m:
Back Me: 1 Lidari (Best Odds: $3.60) resumed in the Peter Young (1800m) at Caulfield and was wide no cover throughout out behind Bow Creek. This looks a lovely target for him and despite the 61kg, he has many, many lengths on these class wise.
Big Danger: 2 Dylanson (Best Odds: $4.60) steps up to the mile after an impressive win over 1200m here last time out where he nailed quality sprinter Riziz right on the peg. 1200m to 1600m isn’t easy, but he is in the leading local stable, Tourneur remains on, draws well and he is a winner up to 2000m.
Roughie: 7 Karlovasi (Best Odds: $7.00) is a tough three year old for Richard Jolly who ran over 1250m on the Parks track last start and ran a game third to talented three year old Colonel Custer. Up to the mile looks as though it will suit him, he’ll lead and is a tough customer to get past.
Race Six (16:05) : Audi Solitaire Handicap (82) 1050m:
Back Me: 2 Jennyfromtheblock (Best Odds: $12.00) is an absolute ripper for the Kennewell yard. She was backed at odds when resuming at the Valley and was given a lovely ride by regular rider Zac Spain to win narrowly but impressively. Had she drawn inside, I’d probably declare, but nonetheless, I’ll still be in her corner.
Big Danger: 9 Tarco (Best Odds: $4.40) ran over this trip on the Parks track a tick over a month back and was game in defeat when running second to Just Kappy. Freshened up and has trialled well at Murray Bridge recently, and now Holder jumps back aboard.
Roughie: 3 Nearest To Pin (Best Odds: $18.00) resumes for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard after a solid yet frustrating Winter/Spring prep. No trials leading in, but he has a very good record on the track, runs well fresh and stable rider takes over.
Race Seven (16:45) : UBET Adelaide Cup 3200m:
Back Me: 2 Real Love (Best Odds: $2.20) was ridden a treat by Brad Rawiller to win the Roy Higgins (2600m) last time out at Flemington. This is the race she has been aimed for since joining the Weir camp, Rawiller sticks and she is the horse who is well weighted given she is a Perth Cup winner.
Big Danger: 7 Up Cups (Best Odds: $14.00) is an absolute beauty for the Brunton camp. One of the stars of Tassie racing, this stayer won the two big handicaps in the Apple Isle, the Hobart Cup and Launceston Cup. He will stay all day, stable has a good record on the mainland and with Signoff out, the race is wide open.
Roughie: 17 Tidy Prophet (Best Odds: $26.00) looked the good thing of the week when racing in the Port Lincoln Cup (1950m) last time out and was given a lovely steer from Matty Neilson to get the job done impressively. Up to the two miles is a query with every horse here, but she is on the limit, in form, will do no work and has a turn of foot.
Race Eight (17:20) : Quaclean Matrice Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Lord Aspen (Best Odds: $2.40) has the potential to be a Group l winner, perhaps the Goodwood, but he can be a bit of a loose cannon upstairs. He wants to pull his head and do plenty wrong, as we saw when he last raced when fourth in the Christmas Handicap. Two trials leading in have been quite sharp and if he is switched on, he’ll spank these.
Big Danger: 8 Runway Star (Best Odds: $3.00) is the interesting type. Handy mare for Peter Moody that has been out of form for some time, but gee she looked sharp in a recent Caulfield jump out and looks the sole speed in the race with the scratching of Riziz.
Roughie: 4 Iconic (Best Odds: $13.00) trialed brilliantly prior to failing in the Kensington before going to the Sale Quality where he was just fair when fifth to Kirani. On his day, he’d go close here, but his form is suspect. I’ll give him one more chance.
Race Nine (18:00) : MAC Drink Driving? GROW UP Handicap (75) 1200m:
Back Me: 9 Eyrton (Best Odds: $6.00) trialled like Black Caviar before making his Australian debut at Caulfield in the Spring where he ran last after doing a stack of work on speed. He looked great in winning a recent Gawler trial, and on potential, he just about has these covered.
Big Danger: 8 Pepper The Pin (Best Odds: $5.50) is a ripper for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard, but just can’t quite crack it for a win. He ran over this trip on the Parks track a couple of weeks back and tried hard but had to settle for a close second to Royal Rumble. He does deserve a race and he probably gets his chance here.
Roughie: 7 Trueno (Best Odds: $15.00) ran over this track/distance a tick over three weeks back and just couldn’t sprint with them late in the piece when fourth to Dylanson. The freshen up should suit, Caboche jumps on and his 3kg claim is a big help.
