Blacktype racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday where it is Durrbridge Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:41) Spring Carnival Handicap (82) 2600m
2 Sly Romance (Bet Now: $3.10) looks a really good bet here for mine. This gelding is on the quick back up after racing over the 2500m at the Valley last Friday night where he sat off the pace and was off the bit a fair way out but stuck on well and kept finding the line behind Kawabata. These are all pluggers. He’s the best of them.
3 The Willybe (Bet Now: $1.90) took a while to get a win on the board but it finally came to him over 2400m on the Parks track three weeks ago under Dom Tourneur, who dominated things from the front for the most part and gave nothing else a look in. Hard to trust him going back-to-back, but he has the form on the board.
7 Spanish Halo (Bet Now: $35.00) ran well over 1950m on the Parks track three back before a couple of efforts at the provincials where nothing really went right for him both times but he wasn’t terrible. Big track, 2600m, weight relief and a bit of tempo will help his claims. Must for exotics IMHO.
Race 2. (14:16) UBET Handicap (64) 1100m
3 Easy Beast (Bet Now: $1.95) looks the one. Has always shown good promise for Richard Laming and he finally got the maiden win out of the way first up at Echuca when gapping them by six in leading all the way under Jamie Mott and ran time. Should lead here I think and take some beating.
5 My Unicorn (Bet Now: $2.35) had been nominated/accepted a few times this week but the Gelagotis team have elected to run her here. She absolutely toyed with them first up at Moe in a maiden under Anthony Darmanin. She won by a couple of lengths and won as if she was in a barrier trial. Clearly harder here, but very likeable and gets the claim for young Stockdale.
2 Tabbing (Bet Now: $14.00) is a noted speedster for the O’Conner team who ran over the 1050m here a fortnight back where he attempted to lead all the way under Jason Holder and gave a kick but tired late to run fourth to Kid Flash. I’d love to see him ridden with cover, and given the amount of speed engaged here, I think that might be the best option.
Race 3. (14:51) MJS Floor Coverings Handicap (70) 1800m
10 Prince Of Pagoda (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Tony McEvoy trained gelding who was well backed at odds when resuming over the mile on Balaklava Cup Day and for the most part, he looked home, but he was nabbed right on the line by Kirona, who has run a couple of ripping races since, so the form looks okay and second up at 1800m is a big tick.
1 Captain Duffy (Bet Now: $4.00) is getting closer and closer to peak fitness and I think he gets a great chance to record a win. Ran over the mile here two weeks ago where he had the box seat sit throughout and looked to travel well but when Spy Decoder sprinted, he lacked the turn of foot but stuck on to run third. 1800m is ideal and he does have a touch of class/quality.
3 Star Wars (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Starcraft gelding for Grant Young who is on the seven day turnaround after racing over the 1950m on the Parks track last Saturday where he just got too far back in the run in a race where you really had to be in the first half of the field to be a winning chance. Back to the course proper and back to 1800m, with tempo, could see him surprise.
Race 4. (15:26) Hill Smith Stakes 1800m
Happy to give 8 Glam Guru (Bet Now: $4.20) another look here. She was deep in the red when racing over the mile here a fortnight back but I think she just copped a bit too much pressure on speed, and perhaps overdid herself when a tiring fourth to Pissaro. Much better horse than that and with cover, I think she can bounce back hard.
9 All Come True (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Robert Smerdon trained filly who ran in the Oaks Trial at Flemington a couple of Wednesdays back and I thought her effort in defeat behind Pinot was tidy given the race wasn’t run to suit her with the tempo not being flash. Trialled up well at Cranbourne on Monday and always respect the stable when they come over.
1 American Sunday (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Darren Weir trained colt who has had three career outings. Debuted with a somewhat surprising win at Mildura before a solid effort from the back at Swan Hill. He then ran over 1400m at Flemington where he again got back in the run but I liked the way he closed off late in the piece behind Octabello. Crying out for further, which he gets here, and strikes a winnable race.
Race 5. (16:01) Schweppes Handicap (70) 1050m
13 Invisible Girl (Bet Now: $5.00) was hard to miss when at this track/distance a fortnight back. I thought her run was a beauty. Got well back from a good draw, back near last on the turn. Held up, held up, held up, then got clear and savaged the line to finish two lengths off Mile High. If she gets clear running early and is within range, she’ll go close.
1 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $4.60) looks the way to go here. She is a mare in really good form at the moment for the Stokes stable who is three weeks between runs since bolting up at this track/distance where she was ridden arrogantly by Finnegan and the mare won accordingly. I think she’s the one to beat here for sure.
5 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $12.00) is a talented mare that resumes for the Darren Magro yard. This mare performed really well in the Autumn, ending the prep in the Proud Miss where she finished down the track behind Fuhryk. She is very good when she is produced on the fresh side and likes the course proper.
Race 6. (16:41) Kitty Kat Pastoral Handicap (75) 1600m
4 Hussybay (Bet Now: $2.90) clearly on top. Mick Hustable trained four year old who has been excellent in two runs back from a break. Stuck on well first up behind France’s Boy before going to the 1200m here a fortnight back where he was confidently backed and aided by a sweet steer from Jamie Kah, it was absolutely painless. The mile looks ideal and he has the upside. Keen.
10 I’m A Princess (Bet Now: $6.00) landed some good bets when winning first up over 1400m on Balaklava Cup Day before racing over the mile here two weeks ago where she was wide no cover for the trip and couldn’t finish it off behind Spy Decoder. Third up bounce for a red hot stable is anticipated.
9 Super Crunch (Bet Now: $23.00) is a ripping mare for the Shane Oxlade team. She defied a betting drift last Monday at Gawler, sitting near the speed most of the way before Potter brought her to the outside and she let down beautifully, then fended them off when challenged. Bolted up in her lone run at the mile and she deserves a crack in town.
Race 7. (17:21) Programmed Durrbridge Stakes 1200m
Taking the chance on the enigma that is 3 Lord Aspen (Bet Now: $3.20). If he brought his A-game, it would be an absolute space job on this lot, but which Lord Aspen turns up…who knows. Freshened up since failing in the Balaklava Cup and I think for sure we now know beyond 1400m, he’s a risk. Back to 1200m, inside gate with Jamie Kah…sets up perfectly.
2 Mio Dio (Bet Now: $4.60) is the big watch here. Will Clarken trained galloper who ran really well here during the early part of the Spring before racing over 1400m at Flemington where he was back/wide and couldn’t really come on in a leader dominated affair, won by Theanswermyfriend. Back to 1200m a big tick and he’ll savage the line late.
1 Casino Wizard (Bet Now: $3.60) is the x factor. Very good sprinter when on song but his run in the Penny Edition was just too bad to be true behind Gailo Chop, but on the flip side, that form has held up quite nicely since. The little break between runs should do him the world of good and on his best form, he’s right up to these.
Race 8. (18:00) The Junction Handicap (70) 1200m
4 Manuel (Bet Now: $4.40) on top, but just. Quality four year old for the Tony McEvoy who is loaded with potential but he does have a few tricks up his sleeve, partly due to his fifth leg. Looked in all sorts last time out on the Geelong Synthetic but his class got him home. Hasn’t been sighted since but I’ll stick with him.
3 Call Me Curtis…(Bet Now: $13.00) gee he’s a nightmare. But, I will say his resumption over the 1050m here a fortnight back was full of merit. There was market support to suggest he’d run well and he did, but given the tempo of the race, he didn’t really get things to suit behind Mile High. Has a lethal second up record and 1200m is his go.
10 Cyclone Thomas (Bet Now: $61.00) is a stayer that is second up for the Francis/Kent team. This boy resumed last Wednesday at Gawler and I didn’t mind the way he stuck to the task late in the piece behind the well backed Red Dazzle. Runs really well second up and does have a liking for racing here, so a definite knockout chance.
