Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:22) Lifestyle Holdings Australia Handicap 1050m
1 Hopes Eternal (Bet Now: $2.10) landed some big bets when debuting in teh PatO’Shea at Toowoomba. He sat off a fast pace before Dittman clicked him up and the gelding showed a lovely turn of foot, and really put them away with ease. Not sure how strong the race was, but he has race fitness/experience and stable knows what they are doing with their youngsters.
2 Mishani Phantom (Bet Now: $3.10) is a Jet Spur colt on debut for Kelly Schweida. He is another who hasn’t been seen at the trials, but based on breeding, he should be ready to go early on in his career and the two big ticks for him are that he finds Brad Stewart and draws the inside gate.
10 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $6.00) is a More Than Ready filly on debut for the O’Dea camp and Proven Thoroughbreds. That combo always knows how to pick out a nice youngster, so despite this girl not trialling publicly, I’ll respect the stable and the fact that this doesn’t look a strong race.
Race 2. (13:57) Cleanstate Commercial Cleaning Handicap 1600m
4 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $4.20) gets the nod. He isn’t the flashiest horse going around, but he’s two from two and the way he has gone about it has been tradesman like and he is showing good potential. Really liked the way he put them away last time out over 1400m at the Sunny Coast. He’s the one with upside so I’ll lean his way.
1 Mishani Bullitt (Bet Now: $2.35) is a consistent type for the Chris Anderson yard who ran over this trip at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where he sat near the speed all the way and fought really hard but he couldn’t out the finishing burst of Pinch Passion. Meets a field of less depth here and has to go close.
5 Maharni (Bet Now: $7.50) is the x factor here. Michael Nolan trained three year old who is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Ipwsich where he sat off a fast pace and tried hard, working home with purpose late to run second to Snitzkraft. Up to the mile is interesting, but if he does see it out, he’s a threat.
Race 3. (14:32) Millkraft Boat Yard Plate (Class 3) 1600m
4 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $2.60) is a talented gelding for the Rob Heathcoate yard who produced a brilliant turn of foot nearer the inside part of the track to win a fortnight back at the Sunny Coast under a lovely ride from Trevor Patel. I think up to the mile here is ideal, he has upside and he will be strong late once again.
10 Don’t Doubt Da Wife (Bet Now: $3.80) closed off well first up in an unsuitable race behind Lord Marmaduke before starting favourite in that race mentioned above where she was ridden a bit upside down and she was gassed at the furlong behind No Annamossity. I think with a more economical ride here, she can be more effective.
It’s rare that Darleen Duryea doesn’t have a nice horse in the stable and 5 Punkenstein (Bet Now: $14.00) is definitely that. Lot to like about his win last Wednesday at this track/distance. Got back in the run and was under pressure before the turn, but kept finding and really attacked the line late to grab Real Elusive near the peg. Harder here, but deserves a shot at Saturday level.
Race 4. (15:07) EDB Training Services Handicap (0MW) 1050m
11 Risen (Bet Now: $4.40) is a smart son of Snitzel that resumes here for Gary Moore and the Yu Long team. This bloke has won two of his five career starts, and while they weren’t against much, he did it well and ran time both wins. I like the stable has sent him north first up, and his trial leading in was very good.
10 Girl In A Million (Bet Now: $3.10) does look hard to beat here for the low flying Ben Currie stable. She landed some big bets when leading all the way to win over 1000m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back under Brad Stewart, against a field that did have some depth to it. Should lead these comfortably and she bolted up in her lone wet track run, which was on debut.
Giving 14 Ice Frost (Bet Now: $4.80) another chance here. Both her runs this time in have come over 1000m at Ipswich. Bolted up fresh before racing there three weeks back and for mine, she should have won. Just got caught wide for the trip and that gassed her near the line when nutted by Star Justice. If she gets a more economical run here, she’s the one.
Race 5. (15:42) Five: Harcourts Green Living Handicap (70) 1200m
10 Nilette (Bet Now: $2.15) is a Rob Heathcoate trained mare who is in really good form at the moment. Attempted to lead all the way over 1200m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and gave a really good kick but she couldn’t quite hold out My Girl Hayley. Maps super here and does tend to save her best for Doomben.
14 Now You See (Bet Now: $3.70) is a mare who is absolutely low flying at the moment for the low flying stable that is Ben Currie and she deserves a crack at a Saturday race. Gave them a galloping lesson last time out at Ipswich, sitting on speed before being clicked up on the turn and careering away. She’ll press forward and take some beating.
2 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $6.00) is low flying this prep for the Gollan camp. Problem is that he hasn’t greeted the judge first. Ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and you could make a case that he should have won given be bombed the start, was sitting last, then got held up when bolting before eventually getting clear and rocketing home. He is a quirky animal, but there is a decent engine under the hood.
Race 6. (16:22) Bank Of Queensland Wynnum Handicap (75) 2000m
11 Speed Gonzales (Bet Now: $19.00) looks a solid each way play at odds. Brian Smith trained galloper who ran over the mile at Beaudesert last Monday, and yes, I know that isn’t the strongest form leading into a Saturday metro race, but his effort was very good. Got left flat footed when they sprinted but his last 200m was excellent. Think the rise to 2000m is ideal and he’ll be strong late.
10 Snapper…(Bet Now: $8.50) he’s going to win one of these races and I will be cussing for eternity. He just has that awful racing pattern that clearly is against him. Flopped out the back again last week at the Gold Coast but he was an eye catcher once again behind Capetown Hussey. Perhaps the 2000m is what he is looking for.
1 Bracteate (Bet Now: $20.00) won that race mentioned above at Beaudesert and it was largely down to a lovely ride from Guthman-Chester, who had the horse parked behind the speed before peeling out, putting the pressure on, and putting them away on the turn. 2000m is a different pain barrier, but if he gets cover, he can threaten.
Race 7. (17:02) Iona Old Boys Handicap 1600m
He’s an enigma but 1 Man Of His Word (Bet Now: $5.00) does get the nod for me. Resumed over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back and once again, he did plenty wrong in the run but I loved the way he closed off despite that when second to dominant winner Supreme Effort. Has won second up, likes Doomben and does have a good record at the mile. Heart in your mouth stuff, but can’t ignore what he did fresh.
6 Mystic Opal (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality mare for Chris Anderson who has been solid in three runs back from a break. Her latest effort came over 1400m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago where she just got too far back in the run and couldn’t really come on behind Urban Knight. Looking for the mile, which she gets here, and this is a winnable race.
8 One Inch Punch (Bet Now: $15.00) is certainly one horse who won’t mind some give in the track. His three runs this time in have been okay without jumping up and down. He ran over this track/distance last time out and stuck on well in defeat behind Lordag. I think his best chance of winning is if they press forward, like they did last prep where he was always thereabouts.
Race 8. (17:37) Bartons Handicap 1200m
4 Supreme Effort (Bet Now: $4.20) does look the way to go here. Kim Waugh trained sprinter loved the drop in grade when racing over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back and the punters crunched him in. They were spot on as D Browne produced a peach and the galloper dashed away for a dominant win. See no reason to jump off.
1 Hopfgarten (Bet Now: $4.00) is the class runner here by some distance and he does get the claim so he has to be respected here. He hasn’t raced since the Mumm during the Winter Carnival here where he finished down the track behind Religify. Resumes with no trials, but he goes well fresh and loves to get his toe in.
6 Beckham (Bet Now: $17.00) is a beautifully bred son of Pins for the Liam Birchley team who did a pretty good job I thought when resuming over 1200m at Caloundra. Did some work early in the run with the big weight and really had every right to chuck it in but he kept on and was game when third to Supreme Effort. Provided that hasn’t busted him, he’s right in this.
Race 9. (18:17) Manly Marina Cove Motel Handicap (80) 1350m
14 Carzoff (Bet Now: $2.90) clearly on top. Chris Waller trained import back for his second Australian after a solid debut campaign in Sydney where he ran three times, resulting in two seconds and a fourth in races where the depth looked far greater than this. Looks to race well fresh and his trial here on September 19 was strong enough to my eye to suggest he’ll be ready to go first up.
13 Bourbon Road (Bet Now: $6.50) is a horse who is low flying at the moment for the Tony Gollan stable. Given a lovely ride by Jim Byrne to win at this trip at Ipswich three weeks back where he had the lovely run just off the pace before Byrne eased him and he pounced on the leaders, drawing clear late. He’s really in the zone at the moment and can’t ignore him here.
10 Arena Salon (Bet Now: $16.00) was given a lovely front running ride by Hellyer to win over 1400m at the Gold Coast two back before racing over the 1350m at Ipswich where he sat off the speed and chased hard all the way but couldn’t quite reel in Bourbon Road. Has a good record at Doomben and is a clear threat
