The Spring Stakes (1200m) brings together a quality bunch of SA gallopers on a path towards potential Group l glory and it is the clear feature race on a nine race card at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out four metres from the 1800m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Spring Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Spring Stakes
Race 1. (12:17) Dominant (bm66) 1200m
3 Keep Reading (Bet Now: $1.70) is a Team Jolly trained three year old that is three weeks between runs since recording his maiden here. Market loved him, backing him into hard odds on and away he went. He didn’t beat much but the win was dominant, so he commands respect I feel with upside to come.
4 Bleriot (Bet Now: $4.20) should be suited back to 1200m with fresh legs. Month between runs since racing in the Oaklands over 1400m where she tried hard, but for mine, just didn’t run the 1400m out behind Mac ‘N’ Cheese. Fresh is best for her and back to 1200m is a big tick IMO.
6 Hanabi (Bet Now: $6.50) should prove hard to beat here for the Stokes camp. Ran on the Parks track just over two weeks ago when on speed throughout and tried hard, just no match for Royal Dress, who looks a talented type for the McEvoy team. Think that form reads strong for this.
Race 2. (12:52) Adelaide Galvanising (bm72) 1050m
5 Winning Weather (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. Three weeks between runs since racing at Caulfield where she found the class a bit rich when down the track behind Awapuni Princess. Much better suited here I feel and back home, at 1050m, with Stubby steering, she’ll take beating.
2 Lakhani Rose (Bet Now: $3.50) is a quality mare for David Jolly that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the Christmas Handicap when far from disgraced in defeat against the track pattern behind Savatoxl, who of course went on to win the Goodwood, so how well does that form read. Looked great in a jumpout a couple of weeks back and is very good fresh.
Maiden grade straight to 72 I find interesting with 6 Self Sufficient (Bet Now: $4.00) but do have to respect an in form stable and overall, this isn’t a strong 72. The maiden win came here two weeks back and he was dominant late on the testing track. A win wouldn’t entirely shock.
Race 3. (13:27) The Junction (bm78) 2500m
The forecast for rain later in the week is music to the ears of 4 Bear Arms (Bet Now: $4.50) and her connections. She could have performed well in the pool at Tokyo she swam that well when winning here two weeks ago. Eran Boyd just had to steer her into clear air and the mare did the rest. Harder here, but if she gets juice in the track, she’ll take beating.
1 Mahis Angel (Bet Now: $1.80) is flying for Travis Doudle and he can win again. He lapped up the bog when winning here three weeks ago. He was the only horse you wanted to be on in the run and he was miles too good. I think he only has to hold his form to be around the mark again as a winning threat.
6 Sasun (Bet Now: $41.00) is three weeks between runs for Barry Brook since placing behind Mahis Angel over this track/distance. He whacked away gamely in the testing ground and was solid late when third. Not sure I could back him to win, but he is one I could include in wider multiples.
Race 4. (14:07) G.h. Mumm Mdn Plate 1050m
6 Lastar (Bet Now: $2.70) is the definite market watch. Team McEvoy filly that is on debut. Trialled at Geelong back in January. Spelled and has had one jumpout to get ready this prep for start one. Stable can produce a decent first starter, so despite drawing wide, watch the market.
11 So Say Angel (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Ryan Balfour trained mare that resumes. This girl made her debut on the Parks track where she was back near last in the run but finished off with real purpose late when fourth to Spin The Reward. Trial was good and overall, this is a thin maiden.
4 Disco Tilmorn (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Squamosa mare that debuted a few weeks ago over 1000m at Naracoorte. Never really a winning threat given where she was in the run but liked the way she finished her race off. Whether she wants further, not sure, but include in wider exotics.
Race 5. (14:47) Carnival @ Mop 9/10-6/11-bm74 1800m
5 Motell (Bet Now: $2.35) does command respect. 600m out, he was the only horse you wanted to be on when he raced here a fortnight back and once Stubby got clear air on him, away he went and he was dominant. Now he has got a win on the board, he could well go on with it.
2 Classy Joe (Bet Now: $4.00) has been up a little while but gee he is flying at the moment. He lapped up the bog when winning here two weeks back, swimming in the conditions and proving miles too good. If that run hasn’t busted him and he’s come through it well, he’ll take beating.
1 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $16.00) is a stablemate of Classy Joe that is an honest customer that should be around the mark. He ran third in that race the stablemate bolted up in. He was on speed throughout and tried hard, but the wheels were spinning on the ground and he battled away to run third. One for exotics.
Race 6. (15:27) Spring Stakes 1200m
3 Beau Rossa (Bet Now: $2.30) is a quality animal for Will Clarken that I think can continue his winning ways. There was a bit of class/quality on display when he resumed with a dominant Lightning win two weeks ago here, handling the conditions comfortably and drawing clear. Group l aspirations for this horse and this race has been a good spring board for that level eg Dalasan, Scales Of Justice.
Very interesting to see how 1 Behemoth (Bet Now: $2.15) resumes. He probably has the runs on the board as the best horse in SA as it stands right now, but this prep will be interesting given there is no Everest/Golden Eagle on the agenda for him. Bolted up in this race last year before doing the Memsie/Rupert Clarke double. Market will tell you if he’s ready.
Fitter and on a firmer deck, want to give 6 One More Jack (Bet Now: $26.00) another chance. He resumed here two weeks back on very testing ground and struggled to pick his feet up behind He’s A Balter in a total forgive. Good second up record, much better on top of the ground and loves racing here.
Race 7. (16:07) Grand Syndicates (bm64) 1200m
10 Specialism (Bet Now: $3.20) has done little wrong since joining Will Clarken in another example of how good this guy is at improving a tried horse. She looked cooked when racing in WA, but with Clarken, was good fresh behind Lombardo, then bolted up here two weeks ago. You’d like to think there is room for improvement and she’ll take beating.
3 Noname Lane (Bet Now: $3.60) is a five year old having start eight so has clearly had his issues but you can see why connections have persisted because the talent is there. Ran here two weeks back and tried very hard. Just couldn’t quite get there when second to Extra Mile. That form reads well for this I feel.
7 Wotuwant (Bet Now: $16.00) has done little wrong this time in but is bursting to win one. Just hasn’t been able to break through, his latest run being a second here two weeks ago to Specialism in a game effort. This race looks well within his reach given the overall depth is on the thin side.
Race 8. (16:47) Furphy (rs0mw) 1514m
This is surely D-Day for 3 Tibetan (Bet Now: $10.00) and whether if he’s a contender or pretender as a race horse. Overall, he has been really disappointing since arriving from NZ but this is the weakest race he has contested since coming over, so he gets his chance to get a win and he is hard fit for a leading camp.
5 The Siscos Kid (Bet Now: $3.60) is third up from a break for Henry Dwyer and should just about be at peak fitness. Looked a good thing when racing at Mildura last time but had to dig in late to ensure that, driving hard the final few strides to get the win. He’s got upside to come and respect the stable when they travel over.
10 Keysor (Bet Now: $27.00) is 0/3 at Morphettville but he is flying at the moment. He didn’t beat an awesome field last time out at Gawler but from off the speed on testing ground, he was impressive the way he put them away late. Harder here, but the way he’s racing, he has earned a crack.
Race 9. (17:25) S Elliott Champagne Lover-bm60 1100m
12 Naleigh (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Will Clarken trained mare that should be much better suited at this level. Thrown in the deep end last start in the Lightning and I thought she was far from disgraced in defeat behind stablemate Beau Rossa, who looks Group l class. Back to 60 grade, she’ll take a power of beating.
1 Kong (Bet Now: $6.00) looks to have his share of talent for Ryan Balfour. Despised odds when resuming in the Lightning but I thought he closed off his race with real purpose, albeit a fair way off Beau Rossa. Looked great in a trial on Monday and should be a leading contender back in grade.
14 Honey Go Lightly (Bet Now: $13.00) is racing really well at the moment for Barry Campbell but can’t quite crack it for a win. Looked it would come on the Parks track last time out but had to settle for another placing, this time a second to Star Of Manhattan. Deserves a win and gets another chance here.
