14/8/2021 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Caulfield, PB Lawrence Stakes day

Spring is in the air this Saturday at Caulfield with several blacktype events, headlined by the Group ll PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

1 Lunar Flare (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) has class on her side and hoping that will be enough to get her home. She comes back to 1700m after racing over 2000m here last time out in what was pretty much a sit/sprint and with the bias for those on speed, her chances were slim. Better set up this time around and she can bounce back into the winners list.

2 Barbie’s Fox (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for Louise Bonella that was bursting to win a race, and it finally came last start at Sandown, finishing off strongly from off the speed and wearing down a gallant Unfair Dismissal. Now she has a win, her confidence should be up and she can win again.

7 Leale (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a Mick Kent trained mare that has been quite solid this time in. Strong on speed win three back at Sandown before running fourth there next time out. Then went to the Valley when attempting to lead throughout and tired late behind So You Assume. Not sure she wins, but a first four threat.

5 No Effort (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is racing really well this prep. Spanked them here two back before having five weeks off. Ran at the Valley when on speed throughout and fought on gamely when second to Hi Stranger. Saves her best for Caulfield and despite a rise in grade/depth, is hard fit, in form and will be out of trouble on speed.

Shane Fliedner is doing a super job with 4 HI Stranger (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS) this time in. He was the winner a long way out when racing at the Valley two weeks back and once Thornton pushed the button, away he went and he was dominant. Bit more depth here but hard fit and in form.

The small field helps the cause of 2 Dark Dream (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS). First run for Team Hayes came here three weeks ago. The forecast for rain didn’t eventuate but despite that, I thought he ran an okay race behind King Magnus. He has the quality to be around the mark. Just wants juice in the track.

13 Zesty Belle (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is flying for the Ellerton/Zahra camp I feel. Both runs back from a break have come here. Narrow second fresh before being given none three weeks ago behind Awapuni Princess. Scratched from last Saturday to be saved for this, so happy to be in her corner.

1 Second Slip (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is a Will Clarken trained gelding that resumes. This guy was hard in the market last Saturday at Flemington but was a late scratching. He hasn’t raced since March 27 when on speed at Bendigo and tiring late behind Groundswell. Trialled well leading and good lead that Kah is booked.

11 Rolls (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) hasn’t done much wrong this time in for Maddie Raymond. Just had to do a bit too much work in the run at the Valley last time and felt the pinch late behind Imperial Lad. Draws to get a much better run this time around and his best is certainly good enough to be competitive.

4 Paul’s Regret (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is a quality mare for Peter Chow that resumes. This mare really came of age in the Autumn, graduating from a benchmark mare to Group l performer, where she was far from disgraced in the Sangster. Looked great in a jumpout last week and is a bomb fresh horse.

1 Plaquette (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is three weeks between runs for James Cummings since winning over this track/distance, largely helped due a slow tempo and Olly saving ground nearer the inside, driving hard and getting the win over La Mexicana. Hasn’t got the upside, but has hard race fitness.

7 Awapuni Princess (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for the Freedman camp that was given a 12/10 by Teo to win here three weeks ago, driving hard late with full momentum nearer the inside and taking narrow gaps to get the job done. Harder here, but she’s a mare who can measure up.

I think 14 Evening Glory (Bet Now: $8.50) only runs well. Team Freedman trained gelding that has had two runs back from a spell. Resumption was pretty much a barrier trial on the Synthetic at Ballarat. Then raced here when dragged back from the wide gate and loved the way he closed off in restricted room. Gate one this time and Jamie Kah back on, hard fit, likes racing here, I think he’s a great each way bet.

9 Wicklow Town (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Julie Scott trained gelding that produced the goods at this track/distance three weeks ago, with the big key being Billy Egan jumping back aboard given he does seem to ride the horse better than most. The query will be can he handle the rise to 84 grade and Egan being replaced, although Froggy is a man in form.

13 Mahashakti (Bet Now: $13.00) is a quality Mitch Freedman trained mare that resumes in what could be a blacktype winning Spring. She really came from nowhere last prep, winning four on the bounce including a couple at the Valley under lights. Like she resumes at 1400m, telling me she’s forward enough to rock and roll.

5 Generation (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Maher/Eustace three year old resuming. This guy created a decent impression towards the end of Autumn, winning 2/2 and each time looking above average. Interesting to see how far he can go, but looked good in a recent jumpout and you don’t know how good they are til they’re beaten.

Class will carry 3 Ingratiating (Bet Now: $3.20) a long way. He had a fab Autumn prep, highlighted by placings in both the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper, which speaks for itself. The stable produced Paulele to win last weekend so keen to see how this guy goes and how forward he is. If he’s around the mark fitness wise, he can win.

1 General Beau (Bet Now: $5.00) is a smart three year old for the Ellerton/Zahra camp that resumes. Not sure about him beyond 1100m, 1000m even, but fresh does appear best for him and he mixed it with some of the better youngsters in the Autumn. Recent jumpout was encouraging and he’s genuine.

Gary Portelli doesn’t get it wrong too often when sending them up from Sydney so I’ll go with 9 Hi Hi Hi (Bet Now: $13.00), who resumes. This filly tried to get into the Slipper via the Sweet Embrace, but got too far back behind Four Moves Ahead in a high rating race. Trials leading in have been sharp and stable gets Willow to steer. She’ll do me in a very competitive race.

7 Gimmie Par (Bet Now: $3.60) looks to have a bit of quality about her. Peter Moody trained filly that had a two run Autumn prep to start her career, debuting with a really good effort down the Flemington straight when second to Ingratiating. She then had a mini break, ran here and got the win out of the way. Market watch for sure because if she remains hard in the market, the last 10-15 minutes, that tells me she’s ready to go.

3 Scorched Earth (Bet Now: $18.00) is a talented filly that resumes. She did a really good job in the Autumn, winning the SA Magic Millions in a romp then winning at the Valley on All Star Mile Day in god style. Liked her recent jumpout and she has a bit of brilliance about her, so the 1100m I like.

2 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $3.60) is a beauty for the Nicholls camp and fitter, up to 1400m, he’ll take a power of beating. Resumed three weeks ago in the Bletchingly and looked the winner when he kicked on speed. Was just bloused on the peg by Sansom. Gets his A1 set up here so he’ll do me.

7 Sansom (Bet Now: $7.50) is hard to beat. Resumed with a win in the Bletchingly and the big tick for him is that he was able to sit off the speed, get cover and relax, not pull his head off, which he was guilty of once upon a time. Fitter and up in trip, he’s got upside as well and has to be respected.

1 Best Of Days (Bet Now: $6.00) is a veteran for James Cummings that resumes. Hasn’t raced since the Doncaster when not quite pulling up 100% in defeat behind stablemate Cascadian, finishing tailed off last. Two time winner at the track, can sprint well fresh and has class on his side.

7 La Mexicana (Bet Now: $2.60) can get back into the winners list. Team Freedman trained mare that resumed three weeks ago here and was very good in defeat from off the speed with the big weight, just missing out on picking up Plaquette. Fitter, got class and I think she’ll take beating.

9 Zou Dancer (Bet Now: $10.00) is a quality mare who looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed here three weeks ago when on speed and was fighting hard. Condition just gave out late behind Awapuni Princess. She’ll take good improvement from that. Just depends whether she wants another run.

6 Brave Song (Bet Now: $35.00) can bounce back in a positive way. I want to be forgiving of the first up flop in the Bletchingly. Sat near the back of the field throughout and on shifty ground, he failed to come on. He is much better on firmer footing and is fitter. Best is good enough.
