The Queen’s Cup (3200m, one of the great slogs of the Winter, highlights a nine race card at the Sunshine Coast this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:42) Savills Sunshine Coast Handicap (2MW) 1400m

You’d like to think 2 Privlaka (Bet Now: $1.50) puts this field away. He has had an outstanding prep for Rob Heathcoate this Carnival but is yet to greet the judge. Gets his chance here. Comes through the Glasshouse where he worked home well from the back but was clearly no match for the low flying Jamaican Rain. Considerably easier here and with the 3kg claim for Boris, he’ll do me.

Danger

4 Bowie (Bet Now: $5.50) is a former kiwi making his Australian debut for the Stuart Kendrick team. His best form over in NZ was at the mile and his form over there probably isn’t good enough for this level at 1400m, but his trial a few weeks back here was pretty good to the eye. He’s definitely one to watch to see if he runs on at the end.

Long Shot

6 Really Reilly (Bet Now: $7.50) is one with a bit of upside to the prep given he is only second up here. He resumed behind Bluebrook at this track/distance two weeks and battled away on the bog track behind Bluebrook. He can pull out a decent run second up and loves racing here. Doubt he wins, but runs top three.

Race 2. (12:17) Thompson McNichol Lawyers Plate (Class 6) 1200m

If he handles the wet track, I do like 5 Tan Tat Diamond (Bet Now: $3.30). Hasn’t raced for five weeks since racing over 1200m at the Gold Coast where he got back and couldn’t come on in a pretty average performance behind Manaya, who has franked the form in town since. Fresh looks his go. Just needs to be okay on the wet surface.

Danger

6 Super Suave (Bet Now: $3.00) is a key threat. He won the race mentioned above and it was largely down to a great steer from Brad Stewart, who saved the ground nearer the inside and finished best in a driving go to get the win. Meets Jetsonic 2kg worse, which is why I’m leaning Jetsonic, but this bloke should go close all the same.

Long Shot

7 Frequendly (Bet Now: $7.00) is on the seven day back up for the Les Ross team after winning over 1050m last Saturday at Doomben on a bog. I didn’t think she’d handle the wet track but she lapped it up and bolted in. Her best form is at 1000m, so the 1200m here is the query, but off last Saturday, I’m giving her a look.

Race 3. (12:52) Latitude Construction Consulting Handicap (90) 1000m

This looks a lovely race for 4 Tumbler (Bet Now: $1.70). They’ve tried to stretch her out to 1200-1350 in stronger races but I think her best chance of winning races is fast run 1000m races. Looked to have her chance last time out in the Healy but was beaten by a beauty in Spright. No horse of that class here and back to 1000m at the Sunny Coast looks ideal.

Danger

One horse who loves the Sunny Coast is 1 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $8.00). Five of his ten career wins have come here, including four runs back at this trip. Three runs since, in much harder races, have been full of merit, the latest when a close up third to Ringo’s A Rockstar. He’s a hard fit/in form horse on his home track.

Long Shot

6 Well Sighted (Bet Now: $31.00) is a son of Gonski resuming for Tony Sears. This horse hasn’t quite measured up at metro level in recent times but has dominated at the provincials so interesting he resumes here. He has run well at the Sunny Coast before and can sprint well fresh so I think watch and see what the market does.

Race 4. (13:27) Aquarius Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Handicap 1000m

Back Me

5 Zoustyle (Bet Now: $1.50) on top but if he’s silly short, he can go around without my money. He trialled up enormous at Eagle Farm and then produced it on debut at Doomben, leading throughout to win by five lengths. Visually, outstanding. Did the clock back it up? Yes. Time was around 6.5L quicker than the other 1110m on the same day. Good enough for me.

Danger

3 Parko (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Smart Missile for Scott Morrisey who won like Black Caviar two back at the Gold Coast before racing in the feature 2YO on Ipswich Cup Day where he was near the speed and fought on quite well behind Unconditional. I think back to 1000m and rolling along on speed will see him prove hard to beat.

Long Shot

14 Rosendahl Red (Bet Now: $41.00) is a Matt Kropp trained filly having just her second start. She debuted on her home track at Toowoomba where she got well back off the pace but finished off okay to my eye behind impressive winner Heart Of Kings. Up to 1000m on the home track suits and there has been early market support at long odds.

Race 5. (14:02) Cooper Small Construction Group Plate (Class 6) 1600m

Imagine what you could be buying instead.

Back Me

I hope Jim Byrne watched the replay of 12 Realing (Bet Now: $8.25) and his win in the Highway at Rosehill a fortnight back. Tye rode him quite ugly but the horse just responded to it and finished best. The key to this horse, a couple in fact, is to wind him up from around the 600m and get him clear air outside runners. Ticks those boxes and he’ll take some beating.

Danger

13 Bluebrook (Bet Now: $5.20) is a son of Hinchinbrook who teased when racing in Victoria but has turned the corner since joining Kelly Schweida. He was heavily backed when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and despite having a tussle in the straight, he got away late and his class came to the fore. More depth here, but is likeable.

Long Shot

11 Irish Optimism (Bet Now: $17.50) is a handy staying gelding that resumes for the Chris Waller team. He was down to resume last Sunday at this track/distance, but was a scratching due to the wet track. Normally needs a run or two to find his best but interesting he resumes without a trial. On his best form, he’s capable.

Race 6. (14:42) Queen's Cup 3200m

Back Me

6 Plot Twist (Bet Now: $4.20) does look the one. 2/2 at the two miles and that is when he does come into his own, winning the last two Stayers Cups at Randwick, including last start when outgunning Doukhan in a great go to the line. Wasn’t much between them there and there won’t be much this time around. Just going with fresh legs.

Danger

5 Doukhan (Bet Now: $4.00) ran a gutsy second to Plot Twist in the Stayers Cup before going to the Winter Cup where he wasn’t suited by the slow tempo but rallied to run fourth to Harper’s Choice. Two miles will be ideal for him, as will the bigger track. Could I back him to win? Probably not, but he’s the clear danger.

Long Shot

7 Skytrek (Bet Now: $13.50) is on the seven day back up for Barry Lockwood after scoring an impressive win last Saturday at Doomben on the mud.Looked in an awful spot on the turn but Steph Lacy saved ground nearer the inside and the horse burst through to score what I thought was a pretty impressive win. Complete unknown at 3200m, but hard fit and in form.

Race 7. (15:22) SV Partners Plate (Class 3) 1000m

Back Me

I think 5 Raiden (Bet Now: $5.00) is beautifully placed here by the in form Kris Lees team. This bloke hasn’t raced since June 11 at Kensington where he didn’t get the greatest amount of luck in the straight behind subsequent Saturday winner Easy Eddie. Fresh, fast run 1000m, spacious surroundings…plenty to like.

Danger

9 Makes You Think (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of So You Think resuming for Steve O’Dea. This bloke was very promising in his first prep where he won 2/2, the second win coming at Grafton over Iggy The Moocher, who is above average. Two trials leading in have been quite good and he’s a big watch here first up.

Long Shot

12 Totally Charmed (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Steve O’Dea trained gelding who was down to run last Saturday but was pulled out and instead runs here. He ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast last time out where Boris rode a pretty poor race I think, making some bad choices at crucial stages of the race when fourth to The Socialist. Two wins prior were great so he can bounce back.

Race 8. (16:02) FC Lawyers Handicap (70) 1400m

Back Me

11 Pressway (Bet Now: $3.10) clearly on top. Steve O’Dea has this horse going super at the moment. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where Michael Cahill seemed to give the horse every chance but was no match for the class of handy three year old Shogun Sun. No horse of that class here, hard fit now…looks the one.

Danger

1 The Overdraft (Bet Now: $7.50) is on the quick back up for Rob Heathcoate team after winning impressively over the mile on Sunday where he had a lovely sit near the pace before Taylor Marshall edged him into clear and despite needing hard riding, he eventually got away late. Hard fit, so a tough 1400m will suit him and is in winning form.

Long Shot

3 Scrabble could be an improver third up from a break. Stuart Kendrick trains this gelding, who ran over 1200m at the Doomben midweeks last time where he never really looked like a threat but stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought behind El Shaday. Great record on his home track and maps well from the gate, and gets the 3kg claim for Boris.

Race 9. (16:37) RPS Handicap 1400m

Back Me

1 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $4.00) looks the one. Kelly Schweida dropped this horse backed in depth and grade when scoring a dominant win at this track/distance a fortnight back against the older horses when sitting off the pace and sustaining a long run to prove too good for his rivals. Bit harder here, but remains well weighted and is now in a winning frame of mind.

Danger

2 Bargannon (Bet Now: $13.50) is a David Vandyke trained gelding who had been struggling a bit to greet the judge first but it finally came last time out over 1200m at Ipswich when sitting off the speed before getting the split and Byrne lifted him late to get the victory. 1400m is the query, but on his home track and hopefully gets a soft trip.

Long Shot

10 Sacred Rebel (Bet Now: $16.00) is the interesting runner. Now with Chris Waller after formerly being with Tony Pike. Ran over 1200m here a fortnight ago and stuck on quite well in defeat behind dominant winner Winter Bride after doing work in the run. We know Waller has a great record with these kiwi gallopers and if he can get any improvement into the horse, he’ll go close.
