A bumper nine race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday where it is Karrakatta Plate Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:29) Tabtouch Maiden 1400m
1 Clever Dick (Bet Now: $3.85) comes through the race mentioned above won by Thisaway. He had the suck run behind the speed and once he got the gap, he looked as if he’d explode but he just went too hard in the middle stages and had nothing left for the finale when third, beaten just over a length. If he improves his manners, he’ll go close.
8 Tips And Scandals (Bet Now: $2.20) comes through the 1400m maiden here on Good Friday where I thought Kennedy gave the mare a peach of a ride, getting her into the 1/1 from the draw before given her chance to let down and she responded but just no mate late for Thisaway. Tricky gate again, but she showed last start she can overcome that.
5 I’m Slats (Bet Now: $5.75) is a three year old gelding on the quick back up after racing last Wednesday in a Bunbury maiden where he drifted back despite drawing gate one and that probably cost him the win in the end as he gave away too much head start behind Four White fox to run a close up third. Takes advantage of the draw this time and he’ll go close.
Race 2. (15:09) Old Comrade Stakes 1600m
5 Pinzu (Bet Now: $3.70) is the knockout chance. Fianlly gets out an ideal trip and Pike jumps on which is a good lead for mine. Hasn’t been suited in both runs back from a break but has been okay without setting the world on fire. Should sit closer than normal due to the field size and on his day he is very capable.
1 Falcon Crest (Bet Now: $1.95) on top but with not much confidence. Got the bob in to win the Grandstand Cup here a fortnight back, where Parnham gave the gelding a lovely ride just off the pace and pounced at the right time to score. Extra 100m looks ideal. The negative, if any, is that there is no tempo, and that could well play against him.
4 North Ridge (Bet Now: $4.50) comes through the Grandstand Cup where he ran fourth to Falcon Crest. Thought his run was very good in defeat given he was back last in the run and i was a race where making ground wold be difficult yet he to to within two lengths of Falcon Crest If he can sit closer in the run, he can turn the tables for sure.
Race 3. (15:49) Amelia Park Beef Handicap 1200m
7 Pearls And Prawns (Bet Now: $3.25) will have to be every bit as god as what she has shown and I think she can produce a career best to win because she’ll need to. She has been outstanding in her three career outings to date, winning all three, running time and doing it with something left in reserve. Draws wide now so she’ll have to work for the win. Hopefully she lives up to the promise.
2 Rockon Tommy (Bet Now: $4.30) resumed here a fortnight back and you could make a case he would have gone close to beating Necklet, who I think is a good thing in the last. This horse loomed to win, showing a lovely turn of foot, but he wanted to lay in bad and Peter Knuckey couldn’t properly get stuck in. If he brings his best, he goes close.
9 Route Eighty Eight (Bet Now: $31.00) is an above average daughter of Written Tycoon that resumes for the Justin Warwick team. She has race four times in her career, placing each time, all races being maidens, but she has always shown glimpses that she can reach this level and the fact she resumes here is interesting. Two trials have been sharp and I’ll respect the judgement of the stable.
Race 4. (16:29) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (78+) 1200m
I think 2 Roger The Roman (Bet Now: $7.50) is a great each way bet here. He is over three weeks between runs since contesting the Bunbury Stakes where he just got too far back from the draw and couldn’t dash quick enough behind Red Ora. Back in depth, back to 1200m and he draws to get the lovely sit off a hot speed. Can only run well.
4 The Celt (Bet Now: $4.90) is another who should lap up the likely hot tempo. He ran over 1100m here a fortnight back where he was run off his legs but closed off strongly the last 150m when fourth to More Aces, beaten three lengths. He has a fab record at this track/distance and the jock is the form rider in WA at the moment.
8 Recoiled (Bet Now: $6.00) will more than likely hold the lead from that inside gate but just how much pressure he cops from Floyd will be the difference between winning and losing. I’m sure Brown will look to hold the inside advantage given this horse is head strong, but that is the case with Floyd. Gutsy win last time after pulling hard. He’s a definite threat…just needs better manners.
Race 5. (17:08) Amelia Park Wines Handicap (72+) 1400m
Despite the weight rise, I think the safe option here is 1 Taxagano (Bet Now: $5.50). Staeck gave the gelding a peach a fortnight back at this track/distance when getting the 1/1 before peeling on the turn and showing a nice finishing burst to score. Has to do it with 59kg this time but I’m confident he can get the job done.
3 Prize Catch (Bet Now: $4.60) is indeed a hard horse to catch but when he is right and firing, he’s a very good horse at this level. Four weeks between runs since scoring an impressive win at this track/distance when wearing down Nelson’s Flight to win narrowly. God fresh horse and gets in well at the weights after the claim.
10 Dr Sykes (Bet Now: $41.00) interests me here. He ran over the 1690m at Bunbury last Wednesday where he got a fair way back off them in the run but worked home with real purpose late behind Let’s Twist and Racy Ava, two horses I like later on in the program. Back to 1400m an obvious concern, but we do know he’ll be strong late.
Race 6. (17:45) WA Oaks 2400m
Each way, I’ll have something on 8 Racy Ava (Bet Now: $14.00). Team Pearce trains this filly, who ran over the 1690m at Bunbury last Wednesday where she had the dream sit off stablemate Let’s Twist and presented to be the winner on the turn but she just couldn’t reel in. Was several weeks between runs and coming back in trip. Up to 2400m looks perfect and she’ll get a lovely run from the gate.
2 Friar Fox (Bet Now: $1.80) is the obvious but I wouldn’t want to take anything silly sort. Dominant win in the Natasha last time where she she had the dream run off the pace and once popped the question, she blew them away and won impressively. 2400m looks no issue for her and is the horse to beat for sure.
13 Sugar Cain (Bet Now: $17.00) could well be the knockout at odds. She is just under three weeks between runs since racing over the 2000m at Bunbury where she was building really good momentum and looking a winning chance but got squeezed out of room late in the piece. Should do no work from the draw and if she gets clear air, I’ll be shocked if she isn’t around the mark.
Race 7. (18:25) Karrakatta Plate 1200m
I don’t think you can go wrong backing 12 Princess Pierro (Bet Now: $15.00) each way. Still a maiden after four starts but she’s much better than what that record suggests. Thought she was outstanding in the Gimcrack, working home with real purpose from the back behind Agent Pippa. Should sit much closer in the run this time around and will be strong.
9 Assetro (Bet Now: $8.00) is the best horse in the race for mine but it all depends how far back she gets in the run from the sticky draw. Gave Agent Pippa too much head start in the Gimcrack but her last 150m was excellent as she rattled home for second. If she is able to sit closer in the run, her finale will come to the fore.
3 Platoon (Bet Now: $15.00) is similar to Princess Pierro. Maiden but better than that and is a live chance here. Perth Stakes run was full of merit as he got back and finished off strongly to run second to Chix Pic, beaten 2.5L. Think he has more upside than most from that race and a hard 1200m will suit him ideally.
Race 8. (19:00) Amelia Park Lamb Handicap (66+) 1800m
7 Let’s Twist (Bet Now: $12.00) got a well deserved win on the board last Wednesday over the 1690m at Bunbury when leading all the way to win narrowly but impressively over stablemate Racy Ava, who I like in the Oaks so by the time this race is run, you’ll know the strength of the form. Should do no work and up to 1800m is only beneficial.
6 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $6.00) is three weeks between runs for the Justin Warwick team since racing at this track/distance where she just gave away too much head start but her last 200m was strong as she hit the line with purpose behind Western Temple. Blinkers back on to sharpen her up. Just has to overcome the nasty gate.
4 Cougar Nights (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Michael Lane trained stayer who comes back a furlong in trip after racing in the Albany Cup last start where Turner got the runs nearer the inside and he looked as if he’d win but just ran out of puff the last 150m when second to Push To Pass. Back to this trip suits and with good cover, he can launch.
Race 9. (19:30) Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (1MW) 1200m
10 Necklet (Bet Now: $2.20) looks a near good thing. Fred Kersley trains this filly who looks well above average and should handle the rise in grade and depth. Took on her own age when resuming over 1000m here a fortnight back and really, it looked as if it was a barrier trial for her. Ran out of condition late but class got her home, and the form has been franked with Mizlecki winning the Raconteur last Saturday. Looks the one.
8 Klondike Kenny (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing well at the moment for the Brett Pope team but he’s just struggling to put a win on the board. He ran at this track/distance a fortnight ago and worked home okay without really threatening when third to On The Turps. Looks to be a horse that wants a hard tun 1200m so if he gets it, he’ll threaten.
2 Scottish Trader (Bet Now: $16.00) is a ripping mare for the Paige Kenney team. Three weeks between runs since sitting on speed over 1400m here where she gave a good kick and looked home but was nabbed late by Bushfire Blonde. Fresh back to 1200m looks perfect and she is lethal at this track/distance.
