The $1 Million race per Saturday in NSW continues on Saturday at Newcastle with the second running of The Hunter (1300m) the drawcard across nine races. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
The Hunter 🏆: View the Field and Odds for The Hunter
Race 1. (13:05) Max Lees Classic 900m
Don’t think there are any standouts here. Not a race I want to get involved in from a betting perspective but for the sake of a tip, 12 Pippa Charlotte (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is on top. Daughter of Not A Single Doubt that has had three trials to get ready for start one. First two trials were okay, but the stable slapped the Blinkers on in her third trial and she was impressive on speed. Think she can get away with this.
I’m wary of 13 Sliders (Bet Now: $2.60 TOP ODDS). Street Boss filly for James Cummings that has had just one soft 735m trial in readiness for her debut and I thought she moved quite well without really being extended behind Hide Your Heart. The Godolphin juveniles should always be respected and she looks to have her share of talent.
8 Collier Bay (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Capitalist for Anthony Cummings that ran a close up fourth in that trial mentioned above won by Hide Your Heart. This girl was off the speed and chased strongly to finish 0.4L from the winner. Has gate one, which is such a huge advantage at the 900m start here. Knockout chance.
Race 2. (13:40) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1300m
I think the senior jock going on 12 King’s Trust (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a big, big tick here. Terry Robinson trained gelding that ran fourth to his stablemate Art Cadeau in a Rosehill Highway two weeks ago. Noticeable that he wanted to lay in under pressure and Brock Ryan isn’t a strong right hand whip rider, so love the booking of Tommy Berry, and from the soft draw, think he’s the one to bet on.
8 Monica’s Star (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. This mare produced an electric finale to win fresh on Port Macquarie Cup Day before going to a Rosehill Highway where I was keen on her chances but she just didn’t appreciate the wet track at all in a total forgive. Off her first up run, she’ll take some beating here.
7 The Snooperstar (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) is big odds here and I could easily have something small on him. He comes through the Art Cadeau Highway and he is a horse who loves dry ground. Just forget he went around at Rosehill and from gate one here on dry ground, I think he can easily bounce back with luck in running.
Race 3. (14:15) Senpos Point Of Sale (88) 1850m
I’m keen on 6 Fortress Command (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) winning again. Admittedly, wearing down Petronius isn’t something I’d want high on my CV, but he did a good job on the wet track, something he usually doesn’t go a yard on. Back up in trip now, hard fit, in form, Nash booked and this is a very winnable race for him. He’ll do me.
I think this race is all about 7 Vadiyann (Bet Now: $2.50 TOP ODDS). If he’s anywhere near right, he probably wins, but given he resumes here, is he the type of horse that could head to Brisbane and try and win a ballot exemption race for the Stayers race on Magic Millions Day? Nearly a year since he made an impressive Australian debut with a win at Randwick. Recent trial win was good, but obviously the market will tell you if he’s ready.
8 Across Dubai (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) hasn’t really done a great deal since coming to Australia but his best efforts have come on firmer footing and that is what he gets here. He ran over 1900m at Rosehill two weeks back on testing ground and stuck to the task really well in defeat I thought behind stablemate Archanna. Back to 1850m on a dry deck, think he can run a much improved race.
Race 4. (14:50) Guardian Safety Solutions (72) 1200m
Down in the weights, I’ll go the way of 15 Anethole (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS), who last raced in the Kosciuszko. He had the back of the winner It’s Me but just didn’t have the turn of foot to go with her, but closed off well enough and was strong through the line in a good effort. Tick over trial was encouraging and with the claim, he’s really well in. He’ll be strong late.
Fitter and up to 1200m are two big ticks for the Joe Pride trained 1 Superium (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS). He resumed over 1000m at Randwick a few weeks ago and was good late despite being in somewhat restricted room when fourth to Blazing Miss. He’s got a good second up record, loves racing on big tracks…just needs to stay on dry ground.
9 Cafe Royal (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Talented galloper for Nathan Doyle that resumes, having not raced since the Winter where she was at the end of a pretty long prep and just looked a mare that was needing a spell when down the track at Rosehill. Been given a good break and has trialled up well to get ready. Market watch for sure.
Race 5. (15:25) Hungerford Hill (78) 1600m
9 Prospectus (Bet Now: $4.40) has been somewhat of an iron horse this time in for Chris Waller but continues to maintain his form. Ran over the Doomben mile two weeks ago where he was back in the run and just hit a flat spot when Dittman asked him for the effort but loved the way he closed off, just missing out on picking up Seentoomany. If he can sit a pair or two closer in the run, think he’s the one to beat despite more depth engaged.
I reckon Kris Lees has 6 Occupy (Bet Now: $14.00) going super and should prove hard to beat here. Was good two back at Canterbury before racing over 1900m here in the Cessnock Cup where the tempo was farcical and those behind, including this guy, really had no chance of winning. He’s going well and a genuine tempo should see him prove strong late.
4 Ulusaba (Bet Now: $11.00) will make sure this is a truly run mile. He ran over the mile at Randwick three weeks back on a bottomless track where he was on speed and tried hard, but didn’t quicken in the mud behind Icebath. Think firmer footing will really help his cause and if he can find the front and get control, he’ll take some beating.
Race 6. (16:05) Spring Stakes 1600m
I’m keen on 2 Ellsberg (Bet Now: $5.50) running well here. Spill The Beans colt that was an impressive debut winner at Warwick Farm before going to Rosehill two weeks ago where he took on the older horses and I thought was good in defeat when second to Enchanted Heart, an in form mare. Back to his own age and I feel 1600m will be fine.
Clarry Conners is convinced that 1 Real Peace (Bet Now: $7.50) will make a nice horse in the Autumn. I think he’ll be hard to beat here. Admittedly the track pattern was in his corner, but he was still very good in defeat in the Bondi Stakes behind Peltzer, taking solid ground off late in the piece. Got the right form reference to be a leading contender here.
It was certainly interesting tactics of Rachel King when it came to 3 Namazu (Bet Now: $11.00) in the Bondi Stakes. It was similar to Tommy aboard Osborne Bulls in the Everest. Bottomless Randwick track and get to the outside fence. As it turned out, the tactic was clearly the wrong one as the inside was gold, but not sure he was going well enough. Better suited on a firmer track and can bounce back.
Race 7. (16:45) The Hunter 1300m
I think 3 Ranier (Bet Now: $4.80) will take some beating here. James Cummings trained gelding that had a six week freshen up after his interruption when racing three weeks ago at Randwick and with the 62kg, he worked home strongly behind all the way winner Cuba. Gets good weight relief this time around and he’ll take good improvement from that.
On a firm and fair deck here, it brings a mare like 6 Sweet Deal (Bet Now: $10.00) into the mix. That Randwick track three weeks ago was bottomless and she is legless when getting her toe, so actually thought she did a pretty good job in defeat when fourth to Positive Peace. Track is much better this time around and up to 1300m suits.
12 Brave Song (Bet Now: $41.00) is a real sleeper here. Team Snowden trained gelding that resumed in the Testa Rossa at Caulfield and really, just put a line through the run. The track was wet, the race was dominated on speed…just forget he went around. Much better suited here and can run a much improved race at big odds.
Race 8. (17:25) Bass Floor (78) 1400m
1 Enchanted Heart (Bet Now: $4.80) can continue her winning ways and make it three on the bounce. The tempo was an absolute crawl at Rosehill two weeks ago, which played right into her hands given she had the turn of foot and in the end, that was the reason she won. Harder here, but think she’s going well enough to measure up and is on her home track.
3 Miss Einstein (Bet Now: $7.50) isn’t the most reliable mare going around but think Bjorn Baker has her going well. Trialled up well prior to resuming at Rosehill a fortnight back and chased strongly throughout in the straight. Just no match for Segalas, who was well backed and got a lovely steer from Tom Sherry. Think she’s hard to beat against these.
11 Saas Fee (Bet Now: $20.00) is another mare that will love getting onto a dry deck. Forget she went around at Rosehill a fortnight back. Thought she loomed as a winning threat but on the heavy track, the wheels were spinning and she didn’t find much behind Segalas. Convinced she’s come back well and on a dry track, giving her another chance.
Race 9. (18:00) Hunter Valley Prem. Meats (88) 1300m
I’m really keen on 9 Through The Cracks (Bet Now: $3.00) here. Provincial Championship winner for Angela Davies that resumed three weeks ago on a bottomless track at Randwick and I thought he was outstanding from where he was, closing off quite strongly when third to Hilo. Tick over trial behind Trumbull was very good and 1300m, firm deck, fitter…hard to beat.
7 Hilo (Bet Now: $5.50) is an absolute beauty for the James Cummings team. Ridden somewhat upside down three weeks back at Randwick when leading, with Rachel King riding to the track pattern, and the move worked, with the gelding holding on to get the win. He is racing so well this time in and he’ll take some beating once again.
14 Two Big Fari (Bet Now: $4.80) is an absolute beauty for Todd Howlett. Took the unconventional path of resuming in the Kosciuszko and I thought he was fabulous in defeat, doing a power of work in the run yet still found the line and was game behind It’s Me. Think this is a very winnable race for him and has to be rated highly.
