Nine races will be run and won on the Parks track at Morphettville on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:56) Furphy (64) 1000m
2 Chosen Blonde (Bet Now: $2.20) has the A1 form to be given serious respect here. Chris Bieg trained filly that ran on Manikato Night at the Valley and ran well, finishing second to a very good talent in Written Beauty in a race where the track record was broken. That form has to read well for a race like this, and it’s been franked.
3 All Banter (Bet Now: $2.20) is the only other runner worth mentioning. Stablemate of Theresabearinthere that also resumes. She raced in the Dequetteville during the Winter and was far from disgraced in defeat behind Parlophone. Gets the stable rider Jake Toeroek to steer and potentially sits outside the stablemate and controls things on speed.
5 Diamonds (Bet Now: $5.50) is third pick. Ryan Balfour trains this Rich Enuff filly, that last raced in the Oaklands during the Winter and bumped into a Stakes class horse in Instant Celebrity. Trialled well enough a couple of weeks ago here and does have early toe, so will be interesting to see what Tourneur does, whether he holds up or opts for cover.
Race 2. (13:31) Happy 40th B'day Licola (72) 1550m
Back to 1550m I do like for the Mick Huxtable trained gelding 1 Ritratto (Bet Now: $1.40). Strong winner over the mile two back before stepping up to 2000m seven days later. He tried hard to wear down Darlamax, but that horse had it way too good in front and was never getting run down. He’s in form and is the one to beat.
6 Pearl Bandit (Bet Now: $3.60) is racing very consistently this time in for the Macdonald/Gluyas team and is ready to win another. Far from disgraced two back in the Gawler Cup before racing on the course proper here where the tempo was clearly against him but still found the line solidly when third to Coffee Amour. He’s racing super and is deserving of a win.
2 Roselli Sting (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Gordon Richards trained gelding that is fitter and should be suited up to 1550m. Resumed over 1200m on the course proper here two weeks ago and found the line pretty well I thought when second to Kenyan Wonder. That form looks pretty good for a race like this and the extra ground is also a tick.
Race 3. (14:06) Tab Make A Date With Play (82) 2250m
Is 5 Charossa (Bet Now: $8.00) back on track? Gordon Richards trained galloper that is similar to that of stablemate Journica, who broke a long run of outs on Monday. Charossa has the ability but has gone completely off the boil. That was until the Sky Beau Final on Cup Day where he worked home strongly from the back behind Hasta La Fiorente. If he runs up to that, I think he nearly wins.
1 Andrea Mantegna (Bet Now: $3.60) is suited back up in trip for David Jolly. He contested the John Letts two weeks ago on the course proper here when attempting to lead throughout, and he tried very hard. Just didn’t have the speed in the legs to finish it off behind Regali Di Gaetano. Back up in trip, back in grade/depth, hard to beat.
4 Eperdument (Bet Now: $5.50) is a quality mare for Shane Oxlade who should appreciate the rise in trip. She was far from disgraced in the John Letts I thought given she was only second up with enormous improvement to come. Getting out to a more ideal trip now and given her record, she isn’t badly in at the weights.
Race 4. (14:41) Claude Haigh (rs3ly) 1250m
4 Alsvior (Bet Now: $3.50) is an absolute beauty for the Jaensch team that is five weeks between runs since racing over 1100m on the course proper here when coming back from 1300m, rising 2kg in weight and gee he tried hard when second to Kayseri. Is back up in trip now, gets 6.5kg weight relief and finds a winnable race. Keen on his chances.
3 Kenyan Wonder (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Ryan Balfour trained mare who was Stakes class when she was a 3YO, but her form tapered right off. That has all changed in recent times and she’s back to a decent level, winning impressively two weeks ago on the course proper here under a lovely ride from Vorster, who does seem to click with the mare. Hard to beat.
I reckon this is D-Day for 1 Savatoxl (Bet Now: $6.00). If he can’t run well here, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was sent back to the NT. He hasn’t done a great deal since coming to the McEvoy camp. Was on him on Cup Day at Flemington but he found nothing behind Outrageous. His best just about sees him win…just haven’t seen it since he’s arrived.
Race 5. (15:16) Peter Elberg Funerals (68) 1250m
8 Quietly Discreet (Bet Now: $2.20) is worth another chance. Phillip Stokes trained filly that is four weeks between runs since leading and copping serious heat on speed, tiring late behind Extra Time, and post race was found to have had an elevated heart rate and a poor post race recovery. Her wins prior suggest she’s certainly capable of bouncing back.
3 Cotillion (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Michael Hickmott trained mare who should take some beating here. I thought she was excellent on the course proper on Cup Day, coming from last and wide and finishing off nicely when fourth to He Will Boom. If she can improve off that, back to racing against the Mares, she’ll take some beating.
5 Storm Voyager (Bet Now: $10.00) is a daughter of Kaphero for Darryl Carrison that surprised some with her win two weeks ago but the win had plenty of merit to it given she was wide and doing work before eventually finding the front and gee she found plenty under pressure to win. Harder here, but have to respect her off that last start.
Race 6. (15:56) Twilight Races At M'ville (68) 1250m
3 Gougers (Bet Now: $3.50) is racing in career best form at the moment for John Hyam. Market wanted to be with him when he raced on the course proper here two weeks ago and they got it right. He was on speed throughout and despite being strongly challenged late, he found plenty under pressure and was too good. That was 1200m, so think 1250m here will be fine.
6 Tullys Gold (Bet Now: $3.10) should prove hard to beat for Ryan Balfour. Has been kept on fresh legs since bolting up over 1200m on Gawler Cup Day, leading throughout and spanking a moderate Class One line up. He’s looked a Saturday class horse since day one and this looks the right race to test out that theory.
9 Two Odd Sox (Bet Now: $6.00) has to be respected here. Ran in the Riziz Final two weeks ago, which was a strong race, and he closed off strongly late when a close up third to the in form Thompson’s Reward. Has a good record on the Parks track and drops a bit in depth. The problem with him is that he doesn’t win out of turn.
Race 7. (16:36) Dominant (58) 1400m
6 Zagato Star (Bet Now: $9.00) is racing well at the moment for the Ryan Balfour camp without winning and suspect form. She tried hard when racing here three weeks ago but was no match for Renegade, finishing second. That horse was beaten on Monday, but far from disgraced in defeat, so will be interesting to see how she goes.
2 Li’l Hank (Bet Now: $5.50) is putting together a tidy little record. Was backed with confidence when he raced at this track/distance four weeks ago and he duly saluted under Tourneur, who produced a 12/10 ride on the gelding to bolt up. Harder here I feel, but heading in the right direction and I think can win again.
The rise to 1400m I think is the last chance for 8 Motell (Bet Now: $8.50). Just ran out of condition first up behind Beeokay, but on Cup Day, he looked to get every chance from behind the speed, and didn’t fire a shot when asked for the big effort. He’s better than that, and was a few weeks between runs, remaining at 1200m, so it’s a much better set up here.
Race 8. (17:16) Tab Create Your Calendar (58) 1950m
2 Rock Steady (Bet Now: $2.70) is becoming costly from a punters perspective but does look to find a very winnable race. Market wanted to be with him when he raced here two weeks ago on the course proper over 1800m but looked to get every chance. Just wasn’t good enough when second to Biarchi, who went around in the Oaks and failed there. He’s got the talent to knock a race off like this. Just needs to do it because he’s running out of chances.
1 Serious Spender (Bet Now: $2.60) will welcome the severe drop in grade/depth. He contested the John Letts Cup, taking on Stakes company, and while he ran last, he was only beaten five lengths. Drops to a very moderate 58, so can see why he is fancied, especially with Jess Eaton and her claim. Can see him being popular.
4 Frankel Star (Bet Now: $10.00) is a very honest customer that is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize. Looked to get a good time of it in front last start at Gawler. Tried hard, gave a good kick, but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Our Deep Agenda. He’ll improve off that run and I think the rise in trip will suit him.
Race 9. (17:51) Kostas Markou Happy 50th (58) 1000m
9 Four Of A Kind (Bet Now: $4.40) looks to be prepped right up to run well here fresh, and I think she can win. Wasn’t far off them last prep but looks to have come back well if a trial and jumpout are any guide. She’ll sit off what looks a good tempo here and prove strong at the end. First run since July, market will be the guide re fitness levels.
2 Akkacan (Bet Now: $4.80) is bursting to win a race. Arguably should have won with clear air when racing three weeks ago here. Backed up a week later in the Riziz Final and was good in defeat in a strong race when fifth to Thompson’s Reward. This looks a very winnable race for him and the overall depth isn’t strong at all. Hard to trust, but this looks an ideal race.
I think 4 The Raven (Bet Now: $10.00) comes into play as a knockout chance. Maggie Coillett takes the ride with her 3kg claim and she is a rider who can ride an on speed horse very well, and on this track, on speed is certainly the spot to be. Tough win on speed last time out at Naracoorte, so comes to town in winning form and will give a sight.
