A nine race program has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (11:50) : Chef’s Hat Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Easy Beast (Bet Now: $4.00) does look the one to beat with the scratchings and the fact he will get a very soft time of it on speed. Sound here on debut before going to Bendigo where he looked all over a winner but was nabbed right on the peg by Mactier. Third run now, so he should know what the caper is about, he should lead and take some beating.
Big Danger: 9 Blonde Russian (Bet Now: $11.00) has been racing much better than what the form guide will read. I thought there was merit in her last start effort in the Queen Adelaide where she got back and worked home nicely late in the piece behind Indian Thunder. On the quick back up and strikes a very winnable race.
Long Shot: 10 Tourist Attraction (Bet Now: $19.00) is a filly on debut for the John McArdle yard. She has had a couple of jump outs at Mornington and has looked pretty good to the eye, jumping cleanly and doing her thing under no real pressure. Always have to respect the stable when they bring them to town on debut.
Race Two (12:25) : Arvanitis Philanthropy Plate (90) 1100m:
Back Me: Pretty keen here on 3 Atmospherical (Bet Now: $10.00). Talented mare for Robert Smerdon resumed in the Irwin and was a bit disappointing to the eye behind Viddora but that form was well and truly franked in the Robert Sangster. Trial win at Cranbourne on Monday was outstanding and this is a massive drop in grade/depth.
Big Danger: 4 Fast Cash (Bet Now: $12.00) is a talented sprinter for Wendy Kelly when he is right but he can be just so hot and cold at times. Comes through the VOBIS Sprint where he was perhaps ridden upside down and was left gassed in the straight behind Rich Charm. I think with a more conservative ride and cover, he can bounce back hard.
Long Shot: 8 Espiritu (Bet Now: $17.00) was the real eye catcher behind Grey Street over 1100m here two weeks ago. Got a mile back off the pace, held up badly, checked a couple of times, but was warming to the task late and was very good to my eye despite being a near rank outsider here. I think she will go around at silly odds again and I think she can run a bold race.
Race Three (13:00) : Pancare Foundation Plate (78) 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Fragonard (Bet Now: $2.80) is a filly in ripping form at the moment for Godolphin and Darren Beadman. Ran over 1400m at Sandown a tick over two weeks back and absolutely destroyed her rivals, sitting on speed most of the way to win by six lengths. Loved the drop back in depth and I don’t see this race being much stronger.
Big Danger: 7 Pedrena (Bet Now: $6.00) is the biggest danger in a very open race for the fillies. Gave the older mares a nice spanking first up under the lights at Pakenham before racing at Sandown on Easter Monday where she was given a lovely run in transit but was just no match late for Sneakers. Looks ready for the 1400m and third up, she should be ready fitness wise.
Long Shot: 4 Savaju (Bet Now: $12.00) is on the seven day back up after racing down the straight over 1200m at Flemington where she ran an absolute beauty and closed off with purpose when third to a potential star in Divine Quality. Little suspect at a strong 1400m, but I like she is on the quick turnaround, and she does have a touch of class.
Race Four (13:35) : Recycal Handicap (78) 1400m:
Back Me: Gee if you backed 2 Atlantic City (Bet Now: $9.00) last start at Morphettville on the Parks track…sorry for reminding you of the nightmare. He just got a mile back from the inside gate and pretty much ruined his hopes there, but his last 200m under no riding was outstanding. If he comes here in a better frame of mind, he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 7 Dane Thunder (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented four year old gelding who has been excellent in two runs back from a break. You could make a case he should have won first up at Sandown on Easter Monday before racing here two weeks back where he finished off with purpose despite doing a bit wrong behind Mr Sneaky. That looks the right form for this.
Long Shot: 9 Coram (Bet Now: $4.80) is a bit of a non winner for the John Sadler yard but he is absolutely bursting to win a race and gets another chance here. Ran down the straight at Flemington on Anzac Day where he finished off with purpose to just miss out on picking up Lake Como. Not a horse you’d want your last dollar on, but he is always thereabouts.
Race Five (14:15) : Ladbrokes Handicap 1600m:
Back Me: 2 Kenjorwood (Bet Now: $2.50) looks a near good thing here provided he overcomes the draw. He ran over 1400m in a Stakes race on the Parks track at Morphettville last time out where it was just an absolute nightmare for those that backed him. Got badly held up near the back and was never really clear until the race was all over. Bigger track, 1600m, leading rider on…ticks the boxes.
Big Danger: 5 Onpicalo (Bet Now: $7.00) is the knockout chance to beat Kenjorwood. He was second up when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back where he chased a hot speed and stuck to his task quite gamely behind Rhythm To Spare. Looks to map well here and a more senior rider takes over now.
Long Shot: 7 Petrology (Bet Now: $9.00) is an absolute menace but the small field and soft draw may allow him to add some value into multiples. Got a long way back in the Rhythm To Spare and was never a threat, but he worked home okay. Nobody rides this horse better than Cory Parish and he takes over now.
Race Six (14:55) : Chandler Macleod Handicap (84) 2000m:
Back Me: 6 Duke Of Ellington (Bet Now: $6.50) strung together a couple of impressive wins on the board before going to the Stawell Cup where he was a short priced elect but was a beaten horse on the turn. To his credit, he fought on to run second to Mujadale. Been up a while, so that may be an issue, but he has the form on the board and strikes a very winnable race.
Big Danger: 12 Charlevoix (Bet Now: $15.00) was in a pretty unsuitable race when resuming for the new stable in the VOBIS Gold Mile but I really liked the way he closed off late behind the star that is Burning Front. He will love the rise to 2000m, he has enormous upside, and does have a touch of class/quality.
Long Shot: 4 Loving Home (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who had market support at bolters odds first up over the mile here a fortnight back and he somewhat justified the support with a closing fourth to Rhythm To Spare, making up nice ground from the back. He is most effective at 2000m+, and he does have a tidy record when produced second up.
Race Seven (15:35) : Noel Rundle Handicap 2000m:
Back Me: Looked at this race with 1 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $2.35) out, but he is in, so he is a standout. High class three year old for Darren Weir who continues his charge towards the Derby. Made his Australian debut for Weir in the Frank Packer where he did plenty wrong down the Randwick straight but his class got him home and the win was pretty soft in the end. Looks to have room for improvement and he does have the Weir polish.
Big Danger: 11 Penthouse Kitten (Bet Now: $17.00) comes back to the 2000m after racing in the St Leger (2800m) on Anzac Day at Flemington where she was asked to do too much from the back and couldn’t sustain the run. Back in trip with the hard run under the belt looks ideal and I think she can go close.
Big Danger: 10 Magellan (Bet Now: $19.00) looks ready for the 2000m now after racing over 1800m here a fortnight back where he got a mile back in the run but finished off his race with purpose behind He Ekscels. That looks one of the key form references for this, he draws well and should get the trip.
Race Eight (16:15) : Clanbrooke Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 11 Enigman (Bet Now: $4.80) for me here. He absolutely bolted in on debut at Bairnsdale before racing in the Hilton on Stakes Day where he was far from disgraced behind Souchez. That form reads very well for a race like this, and he was one of the better performances from a recent set of Cranbourne trials.
Big Danger: 1 Wise Hero (Bet Now: $4.00) is a classy gelding for the John Price yard who resumed over 1200m here a fortnight back where he had a charmed run behind the speed and was presented at the right time by Dunn to get the win on the board and continue to put together a nice record. Dominant 1200m winner second up last time in, so he does look well placed here.
Long Shot: 5 Bord De Gain (Bet Now: $10.00) strung together two wins on the bounce, including a dominant win at Bendigo (Metro) before going to the 12100m here where he tried very hard and loomed but had to settle for a narrow second to Wise Hero. With the 1200m run under the belt, he should be better off and is a definite threat.
Race Nine (16:50) : Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: I think 9 Majestic Lass (Bet Now: $6.50) can turn the tables here. Good mare for the Hayes/Dabernig team that ran over 1100m here two weeks back and looked to travel well in the run, and loomed to win, but her condition just gave out when fourth to Grey Street. Majestic Lass has the more upside and gets a 1kg weight swing.
Big Danger: 7 Grey Street (Bet Now: $4.00) is the form mare engaged here and has to rate highly. Given a perfect ride by Ben Thompson over 1100m here a fortnight back when getting cover before peeling wide and chasing down the nippy Miss Vista to grab victory in the final few strides. 1200m looks the ideal step up and she is only third up here, so she should room to improve.
Long Shot: 3 Deja Blue (Bet Now: $10.00) has been up a while but she is racing very well. Hasn’t raced since the Gold Distaff where she was wide most of the way but stuck on nicely in defeat behind the Group l performed French Emotion. Been up a long time, so what’s left in the tank is the query, but she is three weeks between runs.
